Introduction

We know that nowadays the world has now gone digital. Consumers look at digital media every day because the smart phone and tables, the network connect them. Many printed media has became not as important as before. A lot of traditional magazines have stopped publication. Some book stores have liquidated. Printed books have taken a big hit from the rise of ebooks. INTRODUCTION 09

Introduction

Most People are Losing Their Reading Habits The expansion of electronic and social media in every nook and corner. Nowadays, a lot of people don’t have book reading habits. Reading ebooks and print are on the decline and everyone involved in retail and the publishing industry are trying to figure out why. Are people simply not reading for pleasure anymore and consuming original Netflix content or listening to Spotify? What we do know is that between 2003 and 2016, the amount of time that the average American devoted to reading for personal interest on a daily basis dropped from 0.36 hours to 0.29 hours. American Time Use Survey shows:” 33% of high school grad- uates never read another book the rest of their lives and 42% of college grads never read another book after college. 70% of US adults have not been in a bookstore in the last five years and 80% of US families did not buy or read a book last year.” A handful of reports all issued this year that lament that the typical American is simply not reading for pleasure anymore. The smartphone is always in our pocket and many people tend to read on it, but it’s really easy to break immersion when you get Facebook notifications or Twitter DMS. Netflix constantly gives us pop ups about a new original movie or television show they just added and instant messaging dings are omnipresent.

Gap & Opportunites Gap

14

In nowadays, digital media, digital books sometimes are a convenience. It is also cheap than printed books. Customers may don’t want to buy a lot of books in the home—a lot of e-book apps in the online shop. Every people have a mobile phone, so they will use these apps to reading instead of taking books in the bag. The data shows e-books on tablets cost, on average, 50–60% less than print books. Many people may want to use the easiest way to read books. E-books also make the font flexibility and make reading more accessible than print books.

VOLUMES MFA THESIS PROCESS

Opportunites Although digital e-books are convenient and easy to read, people like engaging with print materials. E-books have many benefits, its fast, comfortable, cheap, comfortable, but the print media is still very ingrained in people’s memory. You can feel and touch the different material quality paper, and you can INTRODUCTION

see different wonderful ink presswork. Print media also can stimulate customers more senses. If the reader’s full attention on the specific print material, it can make an excellent engage- ment with the book’s content. I think if show books unique and specific benefits to the audience, that can cause more people to care about printed media.
