SD 50 YEARS OF EMPOWERMENT
Office for Students with Disabilities marks golden anniversary For half a century, PennWest Edinboro’s Office for Students with Disabilities has stood as a beacon of inclusivity, championing access and providing vital support that has empowered countless students to achieve their academic dreams and navigate college life with confidence. Established in 1974, OSD offers an array of individualized academic accommodations, support services and housing and meal plan accommodations to help students registered with the office achieve academic and independent success.
“For 50 years, the Office for Students with Disabilities at PennWest Edinboro has been a cornerstone of our commitment to inclusivity and accessibility,” said Sharon Conklin, associate director of OSD. “We celebrate the unwavering dedication of our staff and the transformative impact this office has had on countless students’ lives.”

As part of the festivities, OSD hosted an Open House, informative Autism 101 sessions and an immersive disability awareness fair. The fair featured 13 interactive stations, each designed to provide participants with a hands-on understanding of various disabilities. OSD assists students with disabilities ranging from autism, sensory impairments, mobility impairments, learning disabilities, ADHD and mental health conditions to chronic health conditions such as digestive illness, diabetes and severe allergies. “The fair was a unique opportunity for our community to step into the shoes of individuals with disabilities and gain a deeper understanding of their experiences,” Conklin said. “We’re proud to showcase the collaborative efforts of PennWest Edinboro and our community partners in fostering an inclusive and accessible environment for all.” Beyond individual accommodations, the OSD has pioneered specialized programs that further enhance student success. The Boro Autism Initiative for Success (BASIS) program provides invaluable support for students with autism as they transition to college life, fostering a sense of community and understanding. Boro Opportunities for Organization and Study Techniques (BOOST) pairs students with peer advisors, focusing on developing essential academic skills. The Bridge program offers targeted support for first-term students, ensuring a smoother integration into the university environment. The impact of these programs is deeply felt by the students they serve. Bruce Conrad, a computer science alumnus, attests to the power of the BASIS program: “The BASIS program helped me get on track with my studies, gave me a chance to be social with people who understand the daily struggles I have, and gave me the opportunity to grow and learn in many ways,” Conrad said. “The peer advisors were always wonderful, providing social and academic insights and support that was greatly needed and appreciated.” As OSD looks to the future, it remains dedicated to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.
