30-year averages were used to calculate annual flow through each HUC 02 which was unsatisfactory because some contain very heterogeneous climate trends. HUC 08 subbasins were used instead. This map shows HUC 02 Regions (black lines) and HUC 08 Subbasins (gray lines). Areas represented as wet are colored blue (>310 cfs), and dry regions are colored red (<310 cfs).

Step 2: Dissecting the data Cumulative upstream drainage area was analyzed for each flowline. This raw data was skewed, so the natural log of the data was applied to produce a normal curve and produce meaningful classing.

Step 1: Classify wet and dry regions

Dry region breaks are 12 times greater than wet region breaks. Thus, flowlines in dryer regions that have larger drainage areas but lower flows have thinner lines. The 1:150,000 map samples use the legend below and enlarge a variety of wet, dry, and transitional regions. The basemap in the background has been pruned and uses the legend above.

The objective of the project is to create data breaks for assigning line weights to produce stream tapering effects for hydrologic layers for the USGS The National Map. Subgoals for the project include having the breaks reflect a meaningful measure for flowlines and producing a cartographically appealing set of symbols. A problem encountered was that using a common set of line weights for the whole country left dry places looking inappropriately humid and humid places looking inappropriately dry. This problem was addressed using subbasins (HUC 08) to classify the nation into wet and dry areas using annual flow and precipitation data. The project was completed with NHDPlus medium-resolution flowlines using cumulative upstream drainage area to derive a base set of seven symbols for wet and dry regions.

Natural log of wet regions using an equal interval to create class breaks.

Step 3: Creating the class breaks Below the high outlier for the natural-log data, five equal interval class breaks were calculated for wet regions. Dry regions were calculated by multiplying the wet region breaks by 12.

12.2% Calculating a normalized flow based on area and average 30-year flows through a region revealed that dry regions could be considered 12.2 times drier than wet regions.
