Volunteer Role Description Volunteer Ranger What is a Volunteer Ranger? Be our 'eyes and ears.' If you'd like to play a vital role in implementing our access policy by welcoming visitors, monitoring the condition of paths and other facilities, and/or deterring anti-social behaviour, the Volunteer Ranger role is perfect for you.

What’s involved? Volunteer Rangers walk the woods individually or in groups on a regular basis at times convenient to them in order to ensure a positive and safe experience for all. Volunteer Rangers will be required to: • • • • • •

Help meet the needs of visitors by providing appropriate information Learn about and implement our access policy Monitor and report on the condition of paths, tracks, steps, bridges and other visitor facilities Litter pick Learn more about The Penllergare Trust and Penllergare Valley Woods and spread the word about its past, present and future Follow security procedures to prevent theft, damage or other anti-social behaviour

Please note: At the time of registration, you will be invited to express a preference as to what activities you would prefer. Volunteer Rangers will be managed by the Estate Operations Manager and will be requested to follow the Penllergare Trust's Health and Safety Policy at all times.

What do I need to wear/bring? Volunteer Rangers are asked to: • wear strong sturdy footwear, • wear waterproofs (if it's wet), • bring strong garden gloves

This role is purely voluntary and this arrangement is not meant to be a legally binding one or an employment contract

About Penllergare Valley Woods Penllergare Valley Woods was once a famous gentry estate and home to John Dillwyn Llewelyn, the notable 19-century horticulturalist, philanthropist and pioneering photographer. It was Llewelyn’s vision and landscape design in the picturesque tradition that made Penllergare one of the most renowned parks and gardens in Wales. After decades of dereliction and vandalism, the Penllergare Trust was formed as an independent charity in 2000 - completely independent of the local authority and of Government. It has relied in donations and legacies and money raised from activities and commercial operations for income and thankfully it has been supported by a Friends group and many volunteers without whom it simply could not manage. Together with supporters, The Penllergare Trust aims to protect and open to the public Penllergare Valley Woods, a valuable community amenity and asset for the whole of Swansea and beyond.
