Director’s Message

Summertime in Penfield is always extra special. The summer months are always full of activity and busy days! The summer season seems to get shorter and shorter every year and the number of choices that are being offered seem to increase every year as well. I know how valuable your time is and it is my hope you will spend some of that time with us at Penfield Recreation. We have a great summer season scheduled with a number of activities and events for the whole family. Be sure to check out the summer concert series at Penfield Amphitheater and Kiwanis stage (pg. 38). These FREE concerts are a great Chris Bilow, way to spend an evening enjoying the weather and great music. Director of Recreation Bring a chair or blanket and your family and friends to any of our concerts, and you will be amazed at what a fantastic venue our amphitheater is. Penfield’s annual Independence Day Celebration is scheduled for July 2. The parade will begin at 10:00 AM and the events at Harris Whalen Park will begin at 5:00 PM; FIREWORKS at 10:00 PM. Stay tuned to www.penfieldrec.org for updates and important event information. I have been asked why we don’t offer the event on July 4 every year. Coordinating an event this size takes a lot of coordination between the Recreation department and a number of other individuals. From parade and musical participants to safety and sheriff personnel, there are a number of advantages to holding the event on July 2 this year. The Recreation department will be celebrating its 60th Birthday this summer. We will be having some special birthday themes in our programs so I hope you’re able to help say happy birthday to Penfield Recreation! It’s amazing that the department has been providing services to the residents of Penfield since 1956! The department has been lucky to have staff over the years who have put the needs of its residents first and foremost. Today’s Recreation staff continues to maintain the highest level of commitment to offering quality programs. I am thankful to the current staff as they work hard to meet the residents’ needs and provide a quality program to all of our Penfield residents. I hope you stop in and say happy birthday this summer! Have a great season and all the best to you and your families.

- Tony LaFountain, Penfield Town Supervisor I would like to recognize the members of our Recreation department, under the leadership of Director Chris Bilow, for a banner year of programming and participation. We broke all previous records and our numbers continue to grow as we expand to offer our residents the broadest variety of programs possible. Whether you are a parent of a preschooler, are a senior, or anything in between, we have a program for you. If you do not see something you think we should offer, please drop us a note at recreation@penfield.org.

Please note the following construction projects that will impact most members of our community. Much of the work will be done along Route 441. In all cases, expect delays, lane restrictions, and alternate routes.

The 2016 concert series at the Penfield Amphitheater & Kiwanis Stage will kick off on May 27 and run through September 17. Another great season is planned by our Recreation department. Come and enjoy great music, food, a glass of wine, and fellowship with family and friends. Mark your calendar and come enjoy the fun! Over the next year a moratorium will be in place for the Shadow Lake/Shadow Pines golf courses as an advisory committee studies current and future uses based on the proposed sale of the properties by Dolomite/Oldcastle. We have developed a section on our website dedicated to providing the most current and accurate information regarding the moratorium and work the committee will be performing as they develop recommendations for the Penfield Town Board to consider regarding the properties. The information can be found at www.penfield.org, click on ‘The Shadows Golf Courses’ under Quick Links. I hope to see you out and about our great community this summer. Please stop and introduce yourself and let me know what you like about Penfield and what we may be able to do to make our community even better. Be well and be safe!

Daytime Education at Recreation - Wisdom at its finest hour! -

We are excited to offer another full summer season of classes and lectures to our consortium of lifetime learners. Engaging in intellectual, socially viable cognitive activities help to keep our minds sharp and alert while reducing the risk or delaying the onset of age-related concerns. Daytime Education at Recreation at Penfield Community Center has become an important staple to adults who understand the significance of this idea and would like to reshape the way they spend leisure time, meeting new and interesting people along the way. Join the national movement to learn and share life experience with others, exploring the multitude of free programs available in the following pages.

Be a DEAR Volunteer!

Facilitate or teach a class on a topic of interest to you! Our volunteers receive invites to special volunteer events and special classes, as well as accolades from their fellow DEAR participants. This is a rewarding opportunity that will give back ten fold! “The DEAR program has provided an opportunity to learn about things I always wanted to know about but never had the time (or motivation). Each course is led by a volunteer, most of whom know (or prepared) an amazing amount about a subject and add immensely to the learning experience already incorporated into a Great Course or other format. The class participants are fun, friendly, curious, and often also have a wealth of knowledge about the subject. The DEAR programs have been a wonderful, instructive, and enjoyable experience that I am so lucky to have access to. As Hercule Poirot says, it is important to exercise the little gray cells - use ‘em or lose ‘em!” - Diane Meyer, DEAR participant 2011-2016 “I already work on keeping my body healthy and the DEAR program is keeping my brain healthy. It is so exciting to learn new things.” - Pat Schmeelk, DEAR participant 2012-2016 “The DEAR programs provide intellectual stimulation without the hassle of going downtown. Its diversified topics should appeal to many interests.” - Christina Gutt, DEAR participant 2012-2016

An Author Visit: More More Time

Lecture starts at 12:30 PM.

Reclaiming Conversation When we replace human caregivers with robots, or talking with texting, we begin by arguing that the replacements are “better than nothing,” but end up considering them “better than anything” — cleaner, less risky, less demanding. Paralleling this shift is a growing preference for the virtual over the real. Human beings are flawed and forgetful, needy and unpredictable, in ways that machines are wired not to be. What are we losing in our ever hurried race to adapt technology to our lives, and more importantly, how do we get it back? Using Sherry Turkle’s ‘Reclaiming Conversation’ as a starting point, this lecture will look at ways to rediscover our messy, wonderful, non-automated selves. 5/5 #164010-Q #164010-R Rosemary Irwin

issues that every individual faces during a lifetime. Through his characters—lively, funny, a bit lost or wounded, yet resilient and hopeful—Seaburn tackles subjects like: how do we make relationships work? Who can we trust and love? What is the impact of loss on our lives? How do we use the time allotted to us, even though we have no idea how much time we actually have? “I think that we are always wrestling with these questions; we are always looking for answers,” Seaburn says. “It’s through this process that we make sense of our lives and give them meaning. Mr. Seaburn is a former minister and longtime marriage and family therapist, so this a fascinating addition to a book discussion. The novel was one of the finalists in CITY Newspaper’s Best of 2015. 5/26 #364010-C #364010-D David B. Seaburn

With texts selected by noted restaurant critic Mimi Sheraton, this series will explore an aspect of our culture that often gets taken for granted: food. Food provides both nourishment and pleasure, of course, but under the surface of each meal lies a series of complex interactions and entanglements. In six sessions covering history, science, politics, and ground breaking and humorous fiction, we will explore one of the most important issues in our lives. Reading material will be available at the Recreation office prior to the 5/2 registration. #363510-A 5/13 - 6/17 F - 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM Penfield Community Center Rosemary Irwin Free (registration required)
