For the fans of golf, there is The Argentario Golf Club 1 just 15 minutes by car from Il Pellicano. The Argentario Golf Club hosts some of the most important golf tournaments in Tuscany and Italy, features 18 panoramic holes for a total of 6,218 metres and par 71. The Orbetello Lagoon, the sea and the hillside offer a beautiful panorama and create a microclimate that allows golf to be played at any time of the year. The Argentario Polo Club 2 is just 20 minutes by car from Il Pellicano. The polo field and the stables are in classic “Maremma Toscana� countryside with a wonderful view of the sea located in the middle of a golf court of 18 holes.

For most people, Monte Argentario means sea, beaches, fun and relaxation. Peaceful and solitary it is not, especially in the height of the summer season. The “other side” of Monte Argentario is not as well known but it is just as beautiful. Here, in the midst of the hills covered with flowers and herbs, you will find silence and tranquillity. A hike or gentle walk through a world waiting to be discovered – the promontory of Monte Argentario – will give you the space and freedom to quickly forget the stresses and strains of everyday life. TREKKING The descent to Torre Ciana Length of journey: 1 hour, round trip Difficulty: medium, some parts of the path are steep and hidden by vegetation. After the main gate of Il Pellicano turn right, go up and then turn left. The unpaved road that goes to the sea is on the left. Follow it. After about a 15-minute walk, you come to a small path on your left with a mark painted in red. In front of you, you can see the island of Giannutri and a little further to the left is the island of Giglio. Continue following the path

until you reach the Sienese watch tower, Torre Ciana, restructured by the Spanish but now sadly a ruin. From Il Pellicano to Porto Ercole Length of journey: 45 minutes, 5 Km. You can reach the closest village of Porto Ercole, walking directly from Il Pellicano. It’s a nice and easy walk with a wonderful landscape CYCLING 39 km Panoramic road In Argentario, for those who enjoy mountain biking, are very fit and not faint hearted, there is the stunning 39
km panoramic road around the peninsula, 4 km of which are on a rough track with a number of potholes! It is well worth the effort, though, as the views are quite spectacular. Feniglia For those who prefer gentler bicycling, lovely rides can be had on the flat sun baked earth roads in the shade of the Mediterranean pines on the Feniglia outside Porto Ercole. No cars are allowed on the Feniglia and you can bicycle all the way to Ansedonia, a distance of 8 km. Bicycles can be hired at the start of the Feniglia.

You are in Maremma, a region where ancient traditions have survived and Tuscan culture is preserved. If you are a wine lover you have to put your stay in Tuscany to use and spend a day in the most charming wineries of the area. We have selected four wineries for you: Fattoria Le Mortelle, Tenuta di Monteverro, Rocca di Frassinello and Fattoria Le Pupille. Our driver can take you there with one of our Mercedes cars for a full immersion in the taste of Maremma. Fattoria Le Mortelle 1 The latest born from the Antinori’s family, Le Mortelle opens to the public for tours and tastings. From the vineyard to the wine: the farm has been designed with the utmost respect for environment. The wine cellar, a symbol of organic architecture, promotes harmony between humans and environment. A structure designed to accompany the grapes from its genesis to the individual steps: fermentation, aging, and bottling, in a “vertical” way 2 . It is possible to have a wine tasting either in the romantic VIP dining room in the lowest floor of the cave or upstairs, with a wonderful view of the vineyard.
Tenuta di Monteverro 3 (Capalbio – 30 minutes by car) In the southern part of Maremma, at the foot of the village of Capalbio, lies Monteverro, a small region renowned for its authenticity, tradition and its proximity to the sea. The idea of running the estate of Monteverro with the goal of building a winery, stems from an unbridled enthusiasm for outstanding wine. The result is nowadays some of the best and most exceptional wines in the world. It is thanks to the great exposure to the sun, to the sea breeze and the red clay soil with its large rocks that you can taste a great Chardonnay or Vermentino.

Rocca di Frassinello 1 . Rocca of Frassinello is a great international project conceived with the partnership of Les Domaines Baron de Rothschild-Lafite: 500 hectares, 80 already cultivated with vines, 50% Sangiovese and 50% Cabernet, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Shiraz, to produce three wines in what can be considered as a meeting of the best of Italy and France. To state the international level of the company Rocca di Frassinello, the project of the wine cellar was signed by the famous architect Renzo Piano 2 : designer, among others, of the Baubourg in Paris, the head-office of the New York Times, the Morgan Library, and the Auditorium of music in Rome. On the highest hill of the amphitheatre of Rocca of Frassinello, in front of the village of Giuncarico, in the municipal district of Gavorrano, the architect Piano, who has been a producer of Dolcetto and loves wine as much as the pure lines of architecture, has conceived a wine cellar 3 of an astonishing simplicity with a revolutionary division of the spaces and a spasmodic care to the process of vinification which is done starting from the fall of the grape.

If you want to spend a couple of hours in the hilly Maremma, you have to visit and taste the wine of Fattoria Le Pupille in Istia d’Ombrone, 50 Km from Il Pellicano 1 2 . Fattoria Le Pupille is where Elisabetta Geppetti has beeen making her wines since 1985. To make wines at Fattoria Le Pupille is to cultivate with respect, love and patience the seventy hectares of vineyards 3 . The team cares for every day. There are expert hands ready at exactly the right moment to pick the grapes and to bring them into the cellar 4 to be transformed into five wines with distinct characters, but the same life-line: the classic Morellino di Scansano and the Morellino di Scansano Riserva Poggio Valente, the CRU Saffredi and the whites Poggio Argentato and the sweet SolAlto.

You can discover the little beaches along the coast and the wonderful bays of Monte Argentario spending a couple of hours or a half day on our dinghy driven by our staff, departing directly from our beach. On the wild and unspoilt west coast of Monte Argentario, the beaches are much smaller and harder to get to, making them relatively uncrowded even in the high season of July and August. In fact some of these beaches can only be accessed by boat! They are also quite diverse ranging from the beautiful sandy crescent of L’Acqua Dolce 1 which is next to the hotel, to the very pretty part sand and part stone beach at Le Cannelle 2 , with its romantic lookout tower and nearby Isola Rossa. You will stop in front of Grotta Azzurra 3 , don’t forget to take a picture of this fantastic place!

Giglio There are three main villages (which cover only 10% of the island): Giglio Porto, Giglio Castello and Giglio Campese. 1 Giglio Porto is little and picturesque, a very lively part of the island with its narrow streets, nice little shops, bars and restaurants with terraces over the sea famous for the typical fresh fish.

2 Giglio Castello is situated at the top of the island, 405 meters above the sea level. It’s formed by a fortified village, with an access gate and completely surrounded by large-built walls from which you can admire a very beautiful seascape. In the village nothing seems to have changed throughout the centuries: narrow streets, little places and the ancient church give the feeling to go back in time in an unreal atmosphere. 3 Giglio Campese is the most modern part of the island and it is currently a tourist village, located at the back of the large red ground beach. This beach is “defended” by the big rock at the southern end and by the “Medicea” Tower up north.

3.4 Capalbio and the Tarot Garden

Capalbio 1 is a Medieval village, 30 minutes from Il Pellicano by car. It is located on a hill surrounded by lush Mediterranean vegetation on the farthest point of the Tuscan Maremma, immersed in an important natural environment. The historic center with its crenulated profile attracts attention from many kilometers away and is still surrounded by a double wall with walksways on different levels which today may still be walked upon. The village is dominated by the massive Aldobrandesca Fortress at its highest point.

After lunch you can visit the Tarot Garden 2 . Open every afternoon from 2:30 to 7:30 PM, it is 5 Km from Capalbio. Between 1979 and 1996, the French artist Niki De Saint Phalle created a work that can be considered as the supreme achievement of her artistic career, in the heart of the Maremma region of Tuscany. It consists of a series of huge sculptures, between twelve and fifteen metres in height, depicting the twentytwo Greater Arcana featured in the original pack of tarot cards.
The inspiration for this esoteric garden was undoubtedly the beautiful Güell Park designed by Antoni Gaudì in Barcelona, since there are various clear analogies between Niki De Saint Phalle’s work and that of the Spanish artist, not only in the choice of materials used but also because of the extremely symbolic nature of both.

A very interesting excursion is the visit of the famous tufa cities, Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano, just 50 minutes from Il Pellicano by car. The first stage will be Pitigliano 1 , characteristic Etruscan and Medieval village, which rises along the crest of a tuffaceous promontory of a wild beauty; its houses seem to grow directly from the tufa. Pitigliano seems to have stepped out of a fairytale. The village is also known as “the little Jerusalem” because of its settlement of a thriving Jewish Community: testimony of this glorious past is the Synagogue and the museum of the Little Jerusalem.

The Etruscan presence can be traced on the “Vie Cave system” 2 a system of deep trenches adorned with carved inscriptions, which linked religious sites and a necropolis. Not far is Sovana, authentic jewel of the Fiora hills, where time seems to be unreal. Sovana is the main entrance of the “archeological park of the tufa city” where we can find the famous Ildebranda Tomb 3 which, together with different typologies of tombs, make Sovana a unique place with a high concentration of Etruscan relieves. This area is also famous for the production of wine. The tufa rock gives a particular flavour to the wine.

Near Sovana there is a very nice winery called Sassotondo where we can organize wine tastings. Sassotondo has an old cellar completely dug into the ground in a “tufo” cliff on the farmland. The barrels are placed in the last room, separated from the rest of the cellar by a long corridor, 14 meters below the ground and 30 from the entrance door ,enjoying the ideal conditions of humidity and temperature provided by the natural underground environment. The vineyards today total 10 hectares about 8 of which are red varieties (at the present mostly ciliegiolo, sangiovese and merlot), and two are white ones (trebbiano, greco, sauvignon).

Only a few minutes away, you can reach Sorano 1 with its alleys, its archaeological areas (very suggestive agglomerate of Vitozza, rocks and grottoes dwelt since medieval time until the begin of the 20th Century) and the monumental complex of the Orsini Fortress.

In fact, near the Medieval town, the copious sulphuric water (800 litres a second) gushes out at 37째 and gives spontaneous life to a suggestive waterfall which forms a series of natural pools, carved in the rock in which every year thousands of people bathe; Saturnia today is a town which, while maintaining its historical aspect, has given life to a very active tourism, thanks to the thermal complex and the many structures which have developed around it.

Portofino 1 is a small fishing village in the north of Italy, along the “Riviera Ligure”. Il Pellicano is three hours and a half from Portofino. Along the way to Portofino you can decide to stop in Pisa 2 , 2 hours and 15 minutes by car from Il Pellicano. You may want to see the famous leaning tower and Piazza dei Miracoli. As an alternative, if you are a wine lover, you can stop in the town of Bolgheri 3 , two hours by car from Il Pellicano. This area is famous all over the world for the Sassicaia wine. You can visit either Tenuta San Guido or Tenuta dell’Ornellaia or one of the many other local wineries. Please let us know in advance if you would like to visit the Bolgheri region and organize a wine tasting, as it is quite difficult to get an appointment due to the huge demand.

As an alternative another possibility along the way to Positano is Rome 4 . Two hours from Il Pellicano by car, you will need more than a couple of hours to visit Rome but you can have a quick sightseeing of the most interesting places: the Colosseo, Fori Imperiali, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish steps until Via Condotti, the most famous street for shopping.
