It’s a pleasure for the growers and winemakers of Washington state to welcome you to the fourth annual Private Barrel Auction. This auction is a part of the annual Auction of Washington Wines (AWW) weekend, which has grown to be in the top five charity wine auctions in the US. Now in its 31st year, AWW has raised over $41 million dollars for Seattle Children’s Hospital Uncompensated Care and for important winemaking research at Washington State University and its state-of-the-art Wine Science Center.
This remarkable philanthropy is made possible by your vigorous bidding on today’s winery-donated lots as well as similar contributions from wine lovers throughout the weekend. It is also a response to Washington wine character and quality. No longer do we speak about the winemaking “potential” of Washington; we explain its reality. Eclipsing all other US wine regions in volume except California, Washington wines are now woven into the nation’s wine culture, with a staggering number of 95-100 point ratings from all major critics. Washington wines are also included on the wine lists of the country’s greatest restaurants, on dedicated sections and end-caps in grocery stores, and, most importantly, in the glasses of consumers enjoying their superb expression, balance and varietal purity. Wine quality has driven this growth. The growing conditions of the Columbia Valley and 13 sub appellations are the hero of our story. These natural, diverse settings are matched by hundreds of growers and winemakers with a dogged determination that have made Washington one of the world’s great winegrowing regions. Our state’s top winemakers offer today’s auction lots. Through the decades they’ve crafted wines of thrilling dimension and complexity, wines of character, reflecting their origins and varieties. The lots offered today are unique blends, each built on a foundation of excellence, some exploring single vineyards, new techniques or blends, single barrels or winemaker imagination, and each a reflection of the very best that winery makes. As we taste through the vintage, there always manages to be a few gems like this 100% Cabernet Franc, that deserve elevation to their own bottling. Originally fermented as a component for another wine, this Cabernet Franc lot captured our hearts. We set a little aside and have been waiting for an opportunity to give it its own podium to speak from. Beautiful aromatics leap from the glass, with notable florals, ripe red fruits, and proper Cabernet Franc graphite. On the palate, kirsch and raspberries dominate, with a background potpourri of dried petals, citrus rind, and Earl Grey tea. Texturally, the wine exhibits a high degree of shape and polish, with a rounded suppleness and feminine elegance. Bright acidity from entry to finish gives it lift and grace.

Fermented and aged in a concrete egg, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is unique and represents the best of the appellation without interference from external sources.

Our wine is a pure mineral and focused expression of Cabernet Sauvignon with floral notes and a refined yet rustic tannin structure.
Beautiful aromatics of cassis, violet, blackberry, and graphite. The palate is rich and intense with notes of blackberry, violets, dark chocolate, and smoldering incense. Beautifully balanced with a long finish echoing notes of cassis and graphite. This Reserve wine is 64% Cabernet Sauvignon and 36% Cabernet Franc.

DESCRIPTION Named for the Roman god of the South wind, our wine represents an extremely limited production, vineyard designate wine hand-crafted by the Dusted Valley family. This Merlot-based blend aptly hails from Southwind Vineyard, one of our three estate vineyards in the Walla Walla Valley. The wine is 79% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot.
DESCRIPTION For two years, we searched for the right parcel in the Walla Walla Valley — The Rocks District of MiltonFreewater. We found it in 2010 nestled on the edge of the city limits. The 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Holy Roller is every bit the awesome terroir-driven addition to our hillside estate vineyards and we chose to highlight it for this year’s Private Barrel Auction.
Crafted exclusively for the Auction of Washington Wines Private Barrel Auction, this elegant wine showcases a beautiful spectrum of savory red – black brambly fruit, anise and intense minerality. It has a big and generous entry that builds with a rich progression and long finish framed by refreshing acidity and fine and firm mouth-coating tannins.
This wine exhibits all the classic attributes in which “The Rocks” are becoming known for. The nose has a delicious core of ripe black fruit, but has a unique streak of saline and mineral you don’t generally find upon our hillside loess soil sites. The texture is decidedly plush and supple with moderate acidity, making this wine immediately enjoyable.

DESCRIPTION Our 2017 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Red Mountain is a true showstopper. Planted in the late 1980s, and now under the stewardship of Michael Corliss and his vineyard team, this block barely ekes out 2 tons per acre, resulting in impressive concentration and structure. It was fermented with indigenous yeast, went through a 35 day extended maceration, and is currently aging in a new Taransaud French oak barrel.
DESCRIPTION We cherry picked our favorite barrels from our favorite lots of Walla Walla Valley Merlot to create this exclusive wine. Long, sunny days, cool nights and minimal precipitation throughout the growing season provide optimum conditions to ripen balanced and structured Merlot.
This young wine is already showing an immense potential and will surely develop beautifully in barrel for another 10 months before bottling. This is a full throttle, opulent, yet truly balanced wine that will age well.
This wine opens with strawberry rhubarb pie, melding into black cherry and raspberry with hints of leather and smoky earth. Deftly balanced flavors of blueberry preserves atop buttered toast, Rainier cherry, licorice and hints of lavender give way to a lingering finish. DESCRIPTION Our Cabernet Sauvignon is made from one barrel out of a selection of 233. Using a small amount of Cabernet Franc (10%) and Merlot (5%) to round out this prodigious wine, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve captured the unique essence of the Royal Slope AVA with saturated color, ripe but fresh fruit with fine tannin and more moderate alcohol levels. Truly a classic representation of Cabernet Sauvignon.
DESCRIPTION We have long conjured such a blend: Malbec, with its seductive textural richness and Petit Verdot with its intense florality and inky structure. Our inspiration is the laboratory that is the Columbia Valley. We continue to be in awe of its raw potential. The wine is 50% Malbec, 50% Petit Verdot.

Tiny berries struggled on a very steep slope to deliver this very rare wine. On the nose, dark and brooding, with violets, blackberries, vanilla bean, smoke and pencil shavings, followed by layers of tar, black plum, black raspberry, dark chocolate, and Asian spices. DESCRIPTION This 100% Syrah from the Red Heaven Vineyard on Red Mountain was fermented in a 400L French Oak barrel to enhance its complexity, texture and richness then will be aged in a new French Oak barrel for 18 months.
DESCRIPTION Octave Estate towers over the valley at 1350 feet, with the wind blowing swiftly through the vines. Coupled with the dry silty loam soils, these factors lead to a wine with unusual concentration and structure for the Walla Walla Valley.
Deep in color and showing intense flavors of dark fruit and spice. Bold and intense, this wine is structured with refined tannins and an overall balance that make the tasting from the beginning to the end seamless and vibrant.
The young tannins are intense and slightly astringent, softening to a velvety, but strong grip after two years in barrel. The earthiness of hard rocks and graphite prepares the taster for the boldness to come. Ripe juicy blackberry and cassis complement a bouquet of resinous herbs and dark red flowers. A slight tartness balances the intensity and the long finish is of pleasantly ripe fruit sprinkled with vanilla and nutmeg. Enjoy from 2020-2031+. This wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

DESCRIPTION Betz Family Winery looks to the Red Mountain AVA for the purest expression of Cabernet Sauvignon in our cellar. These two vineyards, Ciel du Cheval and Heart of the Hill, contribute multiple blocks and clones to this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wine. Fermentation in concrete vessels further elevates the texture of this wine.
DESCRIPTION Our Cabernet Sauvignon was grown on our estate vineyard where the blocks are located at the top of the vineyard and able to withstand most of the frost damage in the parts of the valley. We believe this is a great presentation of Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot.
Aromas of cocoa, black currant, and mint. On the palate, intense fruit flavors of black cherry and pomegranate are supported by fresh acidity.
Showcasing a purity of fruit, the wine opens with aromatics of ripe raspberry bramble, chocolate and baking spice. On the palate notes of anise, vanilla and fresh black pepper come together with a bright acidity and structured tannins.

DESCRIPTION At Stillwater Creek, Merlot clone three is grown on the part of the vineyard with the highest elevation and best exposure. This is unique because many of the best potential Merlot vineyard sites in California and Washington are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon. Our winemaker tends to pick Merlot early, as soon as the flavors are delicious, and the chemistry is where she wants it. This wine is 100% Stillwater Creek Merlot.
DESCRIPTION With the success of the 2016 Francophile, we have decided to repeat the performance from the 2017 vintage. Our take on the Cabernet Franc is that it is improved in complexity and balance when blended with other classic Bordeaux varietals, as is done in the right bank of Bordeaux.
We think Merlot can be somewhat under appreciated, an underdog. Our winemaker chose to feature what Washington state Merlot can really be â&#x20AC;&#x201D; something quite special.
The 2017 Francophile is a beautiful dark garnet in color, full of seductive floral notes with hints of dried herbs and black currants. On the palate the wine has that Bordeaux like balance of fruit, acid and tannin making the wine drinkable now but promising even greater rewards in a decade. *Additional cases will be available for purchase.

DESCRIPTION This is a father/son collaboration between Mike and Andrew Januik, each of whom produces wines under separate labels. This will represent Mike’s 35th vintage of making wine in Washington state. Andrew’s young age is belied by the fact that he has been tagging along in vineyards and the cellar since he was a youngster.
DESCRIPTION Handpicked grapes were meticulously sorted followed by a 5 to 6 day cold soak. Separated into strategic lots, the wine fermented for 18-25 days in a combination of upright barrique and roller puncheons, and then aged for 28 days after pressing and racking into new French barriques.
Like one would expect from Red Mountain 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has lots of structure that exquisitely finishes with lovely suppleness. Its intense blackberry and raspberry notes are complemented with a touch of cedar in the nose. *Additional cases will be available for purchase.
This particular lot has an incredibly layered nose and pallet of dark and brooding fruit. Blackberry, mulberry and graphite notes give way to more smoky/meaty flavors; alongside forest floor, mushroom and bay leaf. Grainy tannins provide structure and a long finish that continues to develop throughout. This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

DESCRIPTION Every year our goal at Mark Ryan is to create a wine unlike any other offered in the Mark Ryan portfolio, whether it is a traditional Bordeaux style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, or simply an outstanding lot from one of our premiere vineyards. This year we chose to go big with a 100% Petit Verdot. Ciel du Cheval provides deep, dark and rich black and blue fruits. Olsen lends balance and freshness, with complex, savory nonfruit aromas and flavors. The addition of Quintessence offers rich blueberry flavors.
DESCRIPTION The wines were fermented separately in small stainless tanks and punched down twice per day. After pressing and settling, the wines went directly to 100% new French chateau barrels for 20 months of aging. The blend of the two wines will be bottled un-fined and unfiltered.
This blend expresses the purity and typicity of fully mature 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that can only be achieved from old vine fruit. Flavors of black fruits blend beautifully with the spice of new oak. The texture is silky yet firm with integrated tannins, offering a rich and lingering finish. www.woodwardcanyon.com

DESCRIPTION Aging this wine in concrete as opposed to new or used oak has added an extra element of complexity. Concrete, although porous, does not breathe the same as oak, and Syrah reacts well to this slightly reductive environment. One of our favorite vineyards, Lewis takes on some meaty, savory qualities to complement the fresh raspberry fruit notes. This wine is 100% Syrah.
Intense aromatics of dark fruits are lifted with hints of crushed violet, huckleberry compote and rose petals. Underlying meaty notes with juniper and blueberry enhance the round and opulent palate, creating lasting opulence and well-balanced acidity. DESCRIPTION This is the first year that Rotie Cellars has ever made Tannat. Nearly three hundred feet above the Columbia River on a steep basalt slope, our Tannat grapes spend their days baking in the sun and cooling down with wind from the river which makes for incredible concentration.
Highly aromatic, with intense black plum, cassis and pencil shavings, with barrels notes of cocoa and espresso. Densely packed with a solid fruit core, black currant and blueberry flavors are supported by an enticing minerality and a hint of tarragon. TERMS & CONDITIONS OF SALE
1. ADMISSION. Admission to the Auction of Washington Wines’ (“Seller”) Private Barrel Auction is available to licensed members of the wine trade who have provided proof of a retail or wholesale/distributor license, their guests, collectors and media representatives. All attendees of the Private Barrel Auction (each, an “Attendee”) must register with Seller. Any Attendee bidding (“Bidder” or “Bidders”) on wine lots (the “Lot” or “Lots”) must receive a numbered paddle. ALL PERSONS ADMITTED AND/OR BIDDING MUST BE 21 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER. 2. AUCTION. All Lots will be auctioned by a professional auctioneer (“Auctioneer”). Auctioneer is the agent of Seller. All Lot purchases will be made between the Bidder or Absentee Bidder (as defined below) submitting the highest acknowledged bid (“Buyer”) and Seller, and not the producing domestic winery licensee (“Producer”). 3. BIDS. Seller shall establish a minimum bid on all Lots. Seller reserves the right to withdraw any Lot prior to the call for bids, and to bid on any Lot on its own behalf. Bidders and Absentee Bidders shall submit bids on a per case basis, though shall bid upon the entire Lot. For clarity and by way of example alone, if there are five (5) cases in a given Lot, Bidder may submit a bid on a per case basis of $1,000, for a total cost of $5,000. Seller and Auctioneer shall have the right to reject a bid at any time prior to the fall of the hammer, and to reject any advance deemed insufficient in the sole discretion of Seller or Auctioneer. Bids shall only be accepted from registered Bidders, including Absentee Bidders. A signature or verbal bid during the Private Barrel Auction constitutes a legal offer to buy. No bid shall be valid unless acknowledged by Auctioneer. In the event multiple bidders place bids on a particular Lot for identical amounts, Auctioneer shall award the Lot to the bidder first placing the bid. Should a dispute arise between Bidders and/or Absentee Bidders, or should Auctioneer, in his or her sole discretion, doubt the validity of any bid, Auctioneer shall have the absolute right to resolve the dispute, re-offer, re-sell or withdraw the Lot in question. 4.
ABSENTEE BIDDING. Absentee bidding is available for registered bidders who are unable to attend the Private Barrel Auction in person (“Absentee Bidder” or “Absentee Bidders”). Absentee Bidders must register with Jamie Peha at 206.661.8243 or email@example.com prior to the day of the Private Barrel Auction. Absentee bids, which shall be submitted to Seller prior to the Private Barrel Auction for execution at or below a specified price, may be entertained and executed by Auctioneer for the convenience of Absentee Bidder. Seller and Auctioneer shall not be responsible for failing to execute such absentee bids or for errors relating to the execution of such absentee bids.
5. SALE. At the fall of the hammer, Bidder or Absentee Bidder submitting the highest acknowledged bid shall be deemed to have purchased the Lot. All sales are final. 6.
SALES TO OUT-OF-STATE BUYERS. For each Lot sold to a Buyer located outside the State of Washington, Producer shall retain title, possession and control of said Lot until shipment or delivery to Buyer. Buyer acknowledges that applicable laws may (a) prohibit or otherwise limit Producer’s shipment of wine to licensees or consumers in Buyer’s state, including, but not limited to, those laws pertaining to licensing, distribution and direct-to-consumer shipments; and (b) require Producer to ship the Lot through a distributor/wholesaler in Buyer’s state. In its sole discretion, Seller may rescind any sale to a Buyer licensed in a state in which Producer is not authorized to ship wine. Upon any such rescission, Buyer’s sole remedy is the refund of the Lot’s purchase price.
NO REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES. ALL WINE IS SOLD “AS IS.” Seller neither warrants nor represents, and shall in no event be responsible for, the quality of the wine or the correctness of the catalog, including, but not limited to, description, rarity, age, genuineness, provenance, quality, quantity or condition of the Lots. All statements by Seller or Producer are merely statements of opinion and shall not be relied upon by Bidder, Absentee Bidder, Buyer or Attendees as warranties or representations of fact. Buyer, by bidding, acknowledges that Buyer has inspected the wines to Buyer’s satisfaction, and purchased the Lot only as a result of Buyer’s own inspection and opinion. No statement contained in the catalog or made orally at the Private Barrel Auction or elsewhere shall be deemed a warranty, representation or assumption of liability. Buyer’s exclusive remedy for any damages arising out of or related to Buyer’s purchase or use of the Lot is a refund of the purchase price. Buyer hereby waives all rights to any indirect, incidental or consequential damages arising out of or related to Buyer’s purchase or use of the Lot, including, but not limited to, any such damage caused by non-delivery, product liability, inaccurate description, inadequacy, or failure of the Lot, whether or not such damage occurs or is discovered before or after delivery.
8. BOTTLING. Buyer understands and acknowledges that the Lots do not include the barrel and may be bottled in specially labeled bottles. Each Lot will be bottled by Producer in 750 ml bottles, unless otherwise agreed in writing by Seller and Buyer. Producer retains sole discretion as to when the wine will be bottled and delivered to Buyer. Buyer has no right to take possession of the Lot until receipt of the Notification (defined below), and has no right of inspection pending receipt of the Notification. The right to take possession shall not be assigned or otherwise transferred without Seller’s prior written consent, which may be withheld or delayed in Seller’s sole discretion. 9. COMMUNICATION. Seller shall serve as the point of contact between Producer and Buyer, unless otherwise arranged. 10. PAYMENT. Bidders and Absentee Bidders must provide valid credit card information at the time of registration. Seller shall invoice Buyer for all Lots, and Buyer shall submit payment in full for each Lot within thirty (30) days of receipt of the invoice. Notwithstanding the foregoing, for any Lot purchased by a Buyer located outside the State of Washington, Buyer shall submit payment in full for each Lot upon delivery FOB Producer’s licensed premises. Payment for all purchases must be made in United States dollars in cash or by check, MasterCard, Visa or American Express. As Seller is a non-profit, payment by check is preferred so as not to incur additional fees by use of credit card. 11. SHIPMENT. Seller will notify Buyer when the Lot is ready for delivery (the “Notification”). Buyer agrees to take delivery of the Lot at Producer’s licensed premises within sixty (60) days of issuance of the Notification. Title and risk of loss shall pass upon delivery FOB Producer’s licensed premises. Shipping expenses and insurance are the sole responsibility of Buyer. Subject to Section 6 above, any shipment of the wines out of the State of Washington is the responsibility of Buyer, who is solely responsible for the cost and for compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Buyer agrees that the sale and delivery of any wine offered at this or any future Private Barrel Auction shall not affect the rights of Producer to sell its own wines direct-to-consumer or to the distributor of its choosing in Buyer’s state. 12.
MEDIA COVERAGE. The Private Barrel Auction is a publicized event through many forms of media. As a condition of and in consideration for participation in the Private Barrel Auction, all persons attending and/or participating in the Private Barrel Auction, including, without limitation, Attendee, Bidder, Absentee Bidder and Buyer (each, “Participant”), hereby grant permission to and release Seller and Producer of any liability connected withthe reproduction, adaptation, display, publication and distribution in any and all media, whether now known or yet to be developed, of any videos, photographs or other images taken of Participant at the Private Barrel Auction, Participant’s name, voice, likeness, city of residence and any other information regarding his, her or its participation in the Private Barrel Auction. 27

STATE AND FEDERAL LAWS GOVERNING WINES. All sales of wine are subject to applicable state and federal laws, including, without limitation, the regulations of the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board and the United States Department of the Treasury, Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau.
GOVERNING LAW AND VENUE. These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by and interpreted under the laws of the State of Washington, excluding its conflicts of law provisions. Participant submits to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Washington state courts, with venue located in King County, Washington. The substantially prevailing party shall be entitled to his, her or its attorneys’ fees and costs.
15. AMENDMENT. These Terms and Conditions constitute the entire terms and conditions with respect to the sale and purchase of wines made available during the Private Barrel Auction. Seller reserves the right to amend these Terms and Conditions at any time, whether via written amendment or by oral announcement by a Seller-authorized representative during the Private Barrel Auction or otherwise.
