Energy Efficiency Canterbury Windows is a member of the Australian Window Association (AWA) and all of its products are tested and rated under the Window Energy Rating Scheme (WERS). WERS is managed by the AWA and enables windows to be rated and labelled for their annual energy impact on a whole house, in any climate of Australia. To participate in WERS, window makers must obtain energy ratings for their products from a rating organisation that is accredited by the AFRC (Australian Fenestration Rating Council). WERS is independent of any one manufacturer and acts as a fair, rigorous and credible system for testing performance claims. WERS-rated windows must meet all relevant Australian standards. The scheme forms part of the quality assurance that smart manufacturers offer their customers. It is all about certified performance.
The Window Energy Ratings Scheme (WERS) rates the energy impact of windows in housing anywhere in Australia. With up to 40% of a home’s energy for cooling or heating being lost or gained through windows, improving their thermal performance reduces energy costs and Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.

WERS is a proprietary scheme whose members agree to a formal code of conduct and participate in an annual audit.
WERS results can only be claimed and used by WERS members. Canterbury Windows products are all WERS rated and the ratings of all of our products can be found in the Technical Centre on our website at www.canterburywindows.com.au Providing further confidence for our customers, Canterbury Windows membership of the AWA and the Master Builders Association allows us to keep abreast of industry issues and trends, and ensures that we can tailor our products and service to best suit the needs of our customers.

Care & Maintenance Routine Maintenance
Aluminium Windows & Doors

External aluminium surfaces of windows and doors should be washed with clean water and a mild detergent at least every three months. A soft sponge or similar should be used to avoid scratching the glass or aluminium. In coastal or industrial areas where the environmental conditions are more demanding, the cleaning program should be carried out on a monthly basis. Abrasive, chemical cleaners or steel wool should not be used as such methods may result in damage to the glass or aluminium surfaces. Drainage slots should be checked on a regular basis to ensure they have not become blocked with residual dirt or grime.

Awning/Casement Windows & French Doors

With sashes open, the sash and opening perimeter should be cleaned regularly and kept clear of dust and foreign matter. All door and window operating hardware should be cleaned and operated regularly to ensure smooth operation. Lubricants should not be used on casement stays, as this will affect their operation.

Sliding Windows & Sliding Doors Sill recesses should be regularly cleaned and kept clear of dust and foreign matter. A brush and vacuum within the track area may be used to do this. Door locks should be checked from time to time for satisfactory operation and may require adjustment to compensate for building settlement. Door rollers are factory set and should not require any adjustment. However, if, due to building settlement, an adjustment needs to be made, the door panel must first be lifted to relieve weight from the roller assembly. Adjustment should be made using a Phillips head screwdriver.

Double Hung Windows
Window jamb tracks should be cleaned regularly and kept clear of dust and foreign matter. Window operating hardware should be cleaned and operated regularly to ensure smooth operation.

Hardware Regular maintenance is required for all hardware, even stainless steel, as they are moving parts. In most environments, maintenance is recommended every six (6) months and every three (3) months in marine and industrial environments.

Hangers, pivots and brackets should be given a light spray of corrosion preventative (such as CRC Marine 66, Innox or WD40) followed by a light wipe with a dry cloth to remove excess. Exposed surfaces should be wiped down with warm soapy water and a soft rag and then rinsed clean before applying preventative. Visible surfaces of hinges should be wiped down with warm soapy water on a soft rag and then rinsed off by wiping with a clean damp rag. Application of a thin film of light machine oil or one of the corrosion preventative sprays mentioned above will help to maintain the original lustre of the metal finish. Be careful not to get these compounds on the timber work itself as they may cause staining. Drop bolts should be sprayed with a lubricant such as those mentioned above a the sliding pin inside the bolt and to the lock cylinder.

Glass It is recommended that all glass surfaces be kept clean by prompt removal of all dirt or other contaminants. Clean water and, in some instances, a small amount of mild detergent should be used. After washing, any detergent residue must be thoroughly rinsed away with clean water. Under no circumstances is any form of blade, scraper or abrasive cleaner to be used. Stubborn dirt or residue should be lightly sponged off to avoid scratching of the glass. The frequency of cleaning required will depend on environmental conditions such as proximity to the ocean or industrial areas. As a general guide, glass should be cleaned at least quarterly.
Insect and Safety Screens • Flyscreens can be cleaned by vacuuming or washing thoroughly using a soft brush • Clean screens 3 to 4 times per year • Add a small amount of mild detergent to a bucket of warm water • Carefully remove the screen • Hose the screen down thoroughly. • Dip a soft nylon brush into the bucket of water and gently brush the screen. • Hose down well. • Allow the screen to dry before replacing in the window or door.

Screens We offer a wide range of screen options to protect your family from intruders and insects while still providing you with the comfort, aesthetics and lifestyle you want from your home. In a range of styles, with the choice of mesh and grills, there is a screen option to suit every home.

ALUMINIUM WINDOWS

All of our aluminium window products can be screened with our aluminium flyscreen options. Our flyscreens come with fibreglass mesh which is made of woven fiberglass yarn coated with PVC to make it waterproof, rust proof, non-combustible, stain resistant and easy to clean. This type of mesh works to exclude flies, bees, wasps, mosquitoes and other insects. Safety screens and Screenguard options are available in Queensland.

ALUMINIUM DOORS

A variety of screens are available to suit you aluminium sliding and bifold doors.

Pleated Screen

The pleated screen for aluminium bifold and stacking sliding doors has been designed specifically for very large openings. Offering smooth and effortless operation, the pleated screen means optimal enjoyment of the outdoors and, here in Australia, where the dreaded mossie and other annoying pests can make indoor/outdoor living and entertaining unpleasant, it is especially good news. These new, innovative screens are very lightweight, easy to operate and allow you to open up a large area and have it screened where, previously, screens were not available. Bifold and Sliding Stacker Doors are most commonly used in the alfresco area at the rear of the home and can expand your indoor space into an outdoor room. Now, with a screen solution for these doors, they become even more effective, functional and practical. The pleated lightweight screen can be up to 4.5 metres wide, operates from one side and can be pulled out horizontally. Two meeting screens can span up to 9metres wide and they can also be used on corner units with no need for a corner post. Our pleated screen allows you to open up a whole room with a bifold or sliding stacker door and screen it, providing a natural barrier from annoying insects whilst leaving views unobstructed. The retractable pleated screen is easy to install and can be used equally well in renovation projects as well as new homes.

Standard Flyscreen Door

Our standard flyscreen doors come with fibreglass mesh which is made of woven fiberglass yarn coated with PVC to make it waterproof, rust proof, non-combustible, stain resistant and easy to clean. This type of mesh works to r exclude flies, bees, wasps, mosquitoes and other insects. Aluminium mesh is available also as an option as is Pet mesh. Aluminium mesh is suited to coastal and bushfire prone areas while Pet mesh is stronger than fibreglass mesh and is ideal for high traffic areas. Your choice of mesh will be reliant on the application, ease of installation, potential for abuse or accidental damage, as well as environmental considerations, desired life expectancy and aesthetics.

Heavy Duty Screen Door

Our Heavy Duty sliding screen doors come with a more robust and sturdy frame which provides more security and is ideal for high traffic areas where your screen door is subject to more wear and tear. The Heavy Duty sliding screen door comes with fibreglass, aluminium and pet mesh, as well as Alu-Gard. Alu-gard mesh is manufactured using strong, non corrosive, black powder coated aluminium and is designed to repel even the most determined intruder.

Safety Screen Door

Our Safety sliding screen doors come with a more robust and sturdy frame which provides more security and is ideal for high traffic areas where your screen door is subject to more wear and tear. The Safety sliding screen door comes with an aluminium grill to provide extra security, and can be made with fibreglass, aluminium and pet mesh, as well as Alu-Gard (Screenguard in Qld). Alu-gard mesh is manufactured using strong, non corrosive, black powder coated aluminium and is designed to repel even the most determined intruder.

Glazing Options Choosing the right glass for your windows and doors

Windows and glass are fundamentally powerful design elements in our homes. Choosing the right glass can make the

difference between an underperforming window and one which works to realize the full potential of your home. The combination of thoughtfully chosen windows, doors and glazing will define a room; encouraging abundant natural light, views and ventilation, while giving you the control to protect your family from the extremes of Australia’s climate. Ordinary glass is a comfort and energy efficiency weak spot in your home, freely allowing the passage of heat, cold and unwanted noise, and minimal resistance to breakage. Today’s choice of performance glass from Viridian can insulate us from the cold, reflect the heat, keep our homes quieter and connect us with the outside, while protecting us from weather and intruders. At Canterbury Windows, we will make it easy by working with you to make sure you select the right performance glass for your windows and doors.
Where

you live – location, orientation, site
By following these three steps, we will be able to better determine your window, door and glazing needs:

Step 1: Location
Understanding where you live is the first step to choosing glass that is right for your home. If you live in states that have colder and longer winters, you will need windows with glass that offer greater insulation from the cold than ordinary glass does, such as Viridian’s Low E range of glass, double glazing or a combination of both. In hotter parts of Australia, you will be more concerned with reducing the heat of the sun and will need to choose glass products that absorb and reflect heat such as toned and Low E glass with solar control. Step 2: Orientation

The orientation of your windows will encourage natural light to create and define the mood of the rooms in your home as the time of day and seasons change. By understanding the orientation of your windows and doors, and how much they see the sun throughout the seasons, you will by able to determine whether you need to use glass that reduces heat entering your home. Viridian’s range of performance glass is designed to allow the passage of natural light while providing options to control the amount of solar heat that enters the home.

Step 3: Site

Assessing the site of your home is important in considering how your glass selection will help take advantage of the natural surroundings or overcome potential design challenges. For example, you may live close to a busy road and need to use a glass that can help to reduce unwanted noise. To find out more about selecting the right glazing options for things like energy efficiency, security, acoustic control, and privacy, go to the Performance section of our website at www.canterburywindows.com.au , contact your sales representative on 1800 104 000 or email info@canterburywindows.com.au
