MEET THE NEIGHBOUR S

ME E T T H E N E I G H BO U RS We hung out at Three Little Pods café to meet some of the locals.

BRODIE

Chaperone of the driverless electric vehicle (Pod) What’s involved in your role as caretakers of the electric pod? I supervise its use and make sure people interact properly with the pod, that they’re safe and have a good understanding of the technology. Our customers are usually uni students and families with kids. This week we were also involved with a retirement village in Port Elliot for elderly people to use to get around. The pod fits four people and if there isn’t space for one of us, we walk alongside. Although the vehicle goes up to 25 kilometres an

hour, we usually stick to 7-10 because of the foot traffic. Since being a chaperone, I’ve learned a lot about everything going on here at Tonsley because I travel so much throughout the Innovation Precinct. How does the driverless car system work here? The pod has four senses and operates on what’s called a LIDAR system of high-frequency light which scans the immediate environment to compare it with a customised map in its memory. It’s sometimes called 3D laser scanning. We do multiple routes and have set stops under the covered area here. The most common route is the Flinders Uni to TAFE Campus.

HOLLY, JACOB AND JAMES Mother and Head of Technology

THOMAS, KACEE AND LUKE

Year 11 students from Urrbrae High School Why are you here at Tonsley today? We’re doing the Doorways 2 Construction vocational education and training course at Springbank Secondary College and we’re here on a tour of the Tonsley Village development. We’ve been looking at the different stages of a housing build. We’re here with our trainer David, who arranged with Renewal SA and Melisi Homes for our group of 15 Doorways students to visit a real-life building site. This is the first time we’ve been to one. We looked at scaffolding, framing, the stages of a build, materials and safety. What are the highlights of your visit to Tonsley today? It’s been good to see how the houses are being built especially how futuristic it is here in the Innovation Precinct. The driverless electric car is cool and so is the water mister in the garden. It’s a really interesting place.

6 | I.Q.

What brings you here to Tonsley today? My two-year-old, James and I are here to meet my husband, Jacob, who’s the co-founder of Laneway Analytics in the New Venture Institute. About once a week we come from Reynella East for lunch in this amazing kid-friendly space. Our five-year-old often brings his scooter, and the kids love the water mister in the garden, the basketball courts and of course the driverless electric car. Jacob, what do you most enjoy about working in the Innovation Precinct? We’re a small fin-tech start-up (financial technology) and we’re building an analytics platform for the superannuation industry. I love working here, we hot-desk in the co-working space and it gives me access to an innovative centre where I can focus on the business, which I can’t do at home. The New Venture Institute is a hub for entrepreneurs, innovators and start-ups – they run programs, arrange mentors and have linkages to business, industry and government. It’s close to where we live, with good parking and it’s easy for the family to visit. I did a TAFE course here too and I like the whole futuristic vibe.

MEET THE NEIGHBOUR S

TOM

General Manager What do you do here at Tonsley? I’m general manager of commercial research company, Innovyz. We help individuals, universities, research centres, existing businesses and corporate spinouts build and grow companies to bring their innovations, research and ideas to market. The Tonsley Innovation District is our head office. We also run a co-working space here called Co-Hab, which is a not-forprofit company for people from diverse backgrounds and disciplines who can operate their businesses, connect and collaborate with other tenants. Some of the ideas Innovyz has worked on include 3D printing, titanium recycling, and turning agricultural waste into activated carbon. At the moment we’re working on a circular economy project, which is about using resources over and over again, aiming for zero waste. We look for innovation with global relevance, whether it be in new materials, manufacturing methods and technologies, engineering software or robotics.

What’s the best thing about being located here? We’ve been here since it opened in 2016 and initially, we were attracted as an advanced manufacturing site that related to our company goals. It’s an innovation district, and that’s what we do. Tonsley has enabled like-minded people to connect. I used to be the Labor Minister for Innovation, Manufacturing and Trade from 2011 to 2014, so I knew all about this precinct. It feels good to be part of a growing district – doing something positive and renewing the energy into something that lost its spark. Tonsley is convenient, the train is right here along with Flinders University and TAFE SA. It’s quiet and easy to park and I enjoy the diversity here. It’s the cluster effect in action – all the incidental interaction in this invigorating space. We deal with people all over the country, but I love being based here. I’m inspired every day I come to work and to me this precinct symbolises everything Innovyz is trying to achieve for the future.

LUCAS

Flinders University electronic engineering student Why are you here at Tonsley today? As part of my electronic engineering degree, I’m interested in wireless telecommunications, specifically FPGAs (field programmable gate arrays), which use digital signal processing and reconfigurable integrated circuits. FPGAs are designed to be configured by a customer or a designer after manufacturing. They’ve been around since the late eighties and now the market size is estimated at almost $10 billion. FPGAs are found in industries like aerospace and defence, audio, automotive, consumer electronics, manufacturing, medical, financial, scientific and wired as well as wireless communications.

It’s my fourth year here in the Innovation Precinct and I like that the old Mitsubishi premises have been repurposed. I’ll be happy when this area comes to life fully – there’s a lot of potential here and it’s well suited to cohabiting businesses like the Central Market in Adelaide. What do you love about Tonsley? I enjoy being based here, parking is easy and the Tonsley Campus has modern gear and custom-made technology like the robotics lab. We’re able to simulate industrial challenges, and Tonsley is more in tune with the requirements of industry than the university’s main campus. I think here they try to teach students what we need to know for our futures in the industries we’ve chosen.

MADDIE

Student at Flinders University What brings you here to Tonsley today? I’m doing a course called ‘Recognising Opportunities – Innovative and Creative Thinking’, which is run here at the Tonsley Campus. I’m doing a collaborative assessment task, which is about innovation and creating something genuinely new. Tonsley feeds into the topic – the people in here do all sorts and it’s great being part of this environment. It’s a fascinating hub with a science focus.   What do you like most about the Tonsley Innovation District? The up-to-date facilities at this campus of Flinders University are excellent. The quality of the learning spaces really makes a difference, it’s easy to navigate and well designed. This community area is very aesthetically pleasing and welcoming, but also true to its heritage as a manufacturing plant. It recognises what was here before us. I’m really interested in buying one of the townhouses because of the central location close to uni and the low maintenance lifestyle.

The 61-hectare open space is filled with natural light and features broad expanses of concrete floors, striking architectural features that maintain the historical integrity, green spaces, cafes, a squash court and a driverless electric vehicle. Bookings essential.
