Around Lakeway Beat the heat, donate blood, catch a movie later! Stay cool this summer by donating blood at the Lakeway Community Blood Drive and later seeing a free movie, all indoors and all in air-conditioning. The next Lakeway Community Blood Drive will be from 8 a.m. to noon July 21 at the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek. Blood collected at this drive is dedicated for use in the 10-county area surrounding Travis County. Donors will know that they are helping others – maybe saving a life – and getting a movie reward for their efforts. The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has provided tickets for all donors attending the next Lakeway Community Blood Drive. There will be one ticket per donor. Prospective donors with appointments are given priority during the donation process. Walk-ins are always welcome, too. Donors who are unable to schedule an appointment for a time that works for them may email the coordinators, at the address below, to have their names put on a standby list. To be eligible, donors need to be in good health, at least 17 years old and weigh 115 pounds or more for whole blood donations. Photo identification is required, and a good meal beforehand is highly recommended.

Lakeway Municipal Court offers ‘Safe Harbor’ amnesty program this summer Lakeway Municipal Court is offering a summer amnesty program through Aug. 30 to dismiss Failure to Appear and Violate Promise to Appear charges under certain conditions. “Any defendants who want to waive their right to trial and who plead ‘No Contest’ to their underlying charge or charges may seek this relief,” Lakeway Presiding Judge Kevin Madison said. Since April 2016, Lakeway Municipal Court officials have observed formal standing orders not to arrest individuals with active Lakeway arrest warrants who voluntarily turn themselves in to court staff during normal business hours of 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Individuals who do not want to invoke their legal right to trial, who want to pay their fines and court costs will also be afforded a time payment plan to pay off all court costs and fines over a period of time, which is normally three months. Defendants who have failed to appear in court and have arrest warrants and defendants who have been convicted of charges but have failed to pay their fines and have a capias (writ ordering an arrest) will both be given amnesty and will not be arrested if they voluntarily come to the Lakeway Municipal Court, 104 Cross Creek. Those who appear voluntarily will be given an opportunity to set their cases for court and see a judge or prosecutor, or if they just want to pay their fine and costs they can do so on a time payment plan. Time payment plans normally allow defendants three months to pay their fines and costs. In special situations, the judge may allow a longer period of time, depending on the amount owed and the defendant’s financial situation. Defendants who are indigent and unable to pay their fines or court costs, will be set for a court date to speak to a judge about their financial situation. If the judge makes a judicial finding that a defendant is indigent and unable to pay the fine and court costs, the judge may offer alternatives to the payment of a fine, such as allowing indigent defendants to perform community service, which is credited at the rate of $13 for every hour worked. All community service plans must be for nonprofit organizations and must be approved by the court. Examples of court-approved nonprofit agencies are: Goodwill, Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, Central Texas Food Bank, Austin Animal Shelter, and Austin Humane Society. In cases of severe financial hardship, the judge has the authority to decrease the fine or number of community service hours required depending on the severity of the defendant’s financial situation. In severe hardship situations the judge may discharge all or part of the fine and court costs, pursuant to Article 45.0491, Texas Code of Criminal Procedure. Defendants who do not come in to the court voluntarily to take care of their warrants, are subject to arrest in any public place and at their place of employment. Defendants who are arrested will be transported and booked into the Travis County Jail. Their cars may Copyright © 2018 Peel, Inc.

be impounded if the arrest takes place during a traffic stop. Once booked into jail, defendants will be required to post bail before being released. It is always best to appear in court and take care of court cases rather than refusing to appear. Those who voluntarily appear at Lakeway Municipal Court to work out a payment plan or to request a court hearing will not be arrested. For information about a warrant, contact Warrant Clerk Martina Brazell at 512-314-7566.

Around Lakeway Steel Magnolia Boutique Invents Shopping With a Purpose Steel Magnolia, a beautiful boutique shop in the Lakeway area, is celebrating their six month anniversary in Lakeway. Locate at 2127 Lohmans Crossing Rd Ste 306, Lakeway, TX 78734 in the shopping center just off Loman’s Crossing; this small shop is making a difference in the lives of children and adults who need assistance. With so many needs, it is hard for owners of stores to turn away people asking for donations. They may get 50 or more requests for donations a week. Many have to say no. But Steel Magnolia does it differently! When they began planning the store the owners knew they wanted to find a way they could make a profit while helping others. They developed a theme: Shopping With a Purpose. Each month they select a local non-profit. Members of the organization are encouraged to come in and shop, knowing that they are shopping with a purpose. They know that ten percent of the profit goes to their organization. The experience the owners have had working in Zambia has inspired them to develop a new approach to giving. So they developed a charming little boutique filled with beautiful items from vendors who also give back. By selecting vendors who donate a portion of their profits to charities around the world they are able to help thousands of people! The merchandise in the shop is selected because of the story of the vendors about making a difference and impacting lives. The Steel Magnolia Store provides the shopper with a unique shopping experience, the first store to offer such unique support for others. Many of their vendors are selected due to their great entrepreneurial success stories about giving back. As much as possible the store is stocked with items from vendors who provide a portion of their profit to a charity of their choice. A portion of their proceeds goes toward that charity. For example, the adorable children’s clothing comes from products they found through Shark Tank. During the month of June the Steel Magnolia Boutique chose Africa’s Promise Village, a non-profit working in Tanzania, East Africa to provide clean water, education and health care of Maasai families in the area. Another charity that will; be supported in the coming months is the Lakeway/Lake Travis 3 D artificial limb project. The Rotary Club works with Baylor College of Medicine to provide training to doctors in Moshi, Tanzania and assist them as they fit children with a 3 D printed artificial limb.

Lake Travis Computer Solutions

The Lakeway Community and the surrounding area welcomes a store with a heart and residents are encouraged to drop by and see good things happening. The shop is more than a gift shop... Their intent is to find opportunities to 'give back'.

Lake Travis Library Photography Exhibit

The Lake Travis Community Library will exhibit the photography of husband and wife artists Bill and Rosemary Galloway during the month of July. Bill’s interest in photography began as a teenager when he was gifted his first camera, his father’s Argus C-3. Rosemary took to photography as her family’s designated portrait artist. An introduction to the emerging power of digital photography on a winter photo safari to Yellowstone reinvigorated their enthusiasm for their favorite subjects - landscape, wildlife, wildflowers, and travel. The Galloways have since taken many photography safaris to places such as Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, the Rocky Mountains, the national parks of the Southwest, and New England. “Our approach combines collecting eye-catching images in the field and using the creative power of the digital darkroom to produce evocative photographs,” said Bill. Closer to home, the Galloways have for many years walked the trails of Inks Lake State Park and traveled the byways of the Texas Hill Country, documenting the profusion and diversity of wildflowers, birds, and butterflies. Their photographs have appeared

locally in Texas Co-Op Power and Lakeway Voice magazines, and in Hill Country Alliance calendars. Bill and Rosemary’s exhibit includes subjects ranging from bears to butterflies, national parks to bluebonnets, and their favorite “accidental” still life. All are invited to their reception at the Lake Travis Community Library on Sunday, July 22nd from 1:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Scholarship Winners

A future Red Raider and a future Longhorn will head to college later this summer with scholarships from the Friends of the Lake Travis Community Library. Whitney Tran, a Vandergrift High School graduate, and Michelle Chang, a graduate from Lake Travis High School, have volunteered at the library for a combined total of more than 900 hours. The two seniors are sharing $10,000 in college scholarship money from the Friends of the Lake Travis Community Library. Scholarships are granted annually to graduating senior volunteers who have dedicated at least 100 hours of service to the library and plan to continue their education. The scholarships are service awards presented annually to outstanding seniors by the library. Tran, who started volunteering at the library in 2013, will attend Texas Tech, where she plans to study to become an OB/GYN. Chang is headed to the University of Texas and plans to study biology and continue her passion in art, hoping to combine the two in a future career. “The Friends of the Library are always happy to award money to deserving student volunteers,” said Friends President Jana Dodd. Scholarship Chair Jeannie Buderer echoed the support. “We are especially happy to help these two outstanding young women. It is a pleasure getting to know these teen volunteers through the interview process and we are honored to be able to help launch their college careers.” Both Tran and Chang received their awards at their schools’ honors ceremonies in late May. The Friends of the Lake Travis Community Library have awarded over $60,000 in scholarships to teen volunteers since 2007.

Summer Reading Program Parents seeking to help their children avoid the “Summer Slide” can participate in the summer reading program at the Lake Travis Community Library. The summer reading program will run from June 2 through July 27 and will help children maintain and even improve their reading and comprehension skills built during the school year. The program can also help prepare children and teens for the upcoming school year and a successful academic future. This year’s theme is “Libraries Rock!” and the summer reading program kickoff party will be held on Saturday, June 2 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon. Special activities include a baby animal petting zoo, children’s musician Joe McDermott, washable face tattoos, crafts, and a photo wall. Refreshments will be provided by HEB. “The summer is one of our busiest, most fun times at the library,” said Library Director Morgan McMillian. “We have multiple programs every single day such as Science Camp, Family Flicks, Lego Robotics, Tween Time, and many special performers. I hope people take advantage of these fun offerings!” In addition to the regular schedule of story times, the summer reading program will feature library camps for those entering kindergarten and up on Monday afternoons. Science camp will be held on Tuesday afternoons as well as Come & Go Crafts. Tweens ages eight to twelve will enjoy Tween Time crafts and activities on Wednesday afternoons. Summer Thursdays are lots of fun with children’s entertainers including Dinosaur George, Critterman, and Magician Cody Fisher. Summer Fridays will feature special musical performers like Trilogy Quartet, Pint Size Polkas, and students from The Musician’s Woodshed. Finally, the library will present a grant funded Lego Robotics class for ages five and up each Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Adults and teens can also take part in the summer reading program. Frequent reader punch cards are available and for every five books read, participants will receive a free book and be entered into a drawing for fun prizes. Registration for all summer reading programs begins on June 2nd and is free and open to the public. For more information call (512) 263-2885 or go to www.laketravislibrary.org.

Lake Travis Sister Wives So who the heck are we? In a nutshell, we are a "sisterhood" organization full of dynamic women committed to supporting one another and our community. Over the past 6 years, our small group has exponentially grown into a full fledged organization. Our social activities are a fun and fabulous way for the women in our community to build lasting friendships, as well as impacting our community through charitable contributions. Although LTSW is first and foremost a “social group" that offers a variety of social gatherings, philanthropy is always near and dear to our hearts. Our members have come together to support many local events including the Lake Travis Education Foundation, 5K Fun Runs and the Lakeway Officer's Toy Drive. LTSW welcomes new members who are interested in philanthropy, socializing and celebrating friendships with women of the Lake Travis community. We would love to hear your fun ideas for upcoming events and recommendations for future charity projects we support. Perhaps it’s one that you’re already involved with, or have been meaning to look into more. We would love to hear from you and invite you to get involved, meet some incredible women and make a difference! Membership is open to all ladies in our Lake Travis community, please email us at: LakeTravisSisterWives@gmail.com. LTSW Facebook Group page - https://www.facebook.com/ groups/LTSW1.

PARTNERSHIPS FOR CHILDREN Sometimes, the seemingly smallest items can make the biggest difference in a child’s life. That’s where the Rainbow Room comes in. It’s our 24/7 resource center located in the CPS offices where caseworkers can come to gather essential items for children who are in crisis. We stock everything from toiletries to clothing to car seats. Thanks to the donations we receive, we’re able to serve more than 650 children every month. But our need continues to grow. By donating to the Rainbow Room, you’ll make an immediate and powerful difference in these children’s safety, health, and comfort. Whether it’s a teddy bear or a toothbrush, every item that you donate matters. To schedule a time to drop off donations, contact Marcus at marcus@ partnershipsforchildren.org or 512-834-4756. Around Lakeway Update Regarding The Installation Of A Public Sewer System In The First 17 Sections (Old Lakeway Neighborhood) As many of you know, in late February and early March, we conducted a survey to see how many homeowners in the first 17 sections of Lakeway were interested in the installation of a sewer system, allowing them the option to hook up to a public sewer line rather than continue with their existing septic tank. To spread the word of this proposal, we sent out an e-mail to each of the affected homeowners for which we had email addresses on file, followed by a letter mailed to each address in the affected area, totaling roughly 1,000 homes. Coverage of the proposal and event dates were published on the City’s website and e-distribution list as well as being printed by Community Impact and the Austin American Statesman. We had a total of about 165 people at the first informational meeting held in the evening of Feb. 26 and about 62 people at the morning meeting on March 1 at the Lakeway Activity Center. The surveys were due on Friday, March 9. We received 631 responses with 73% choosing Option 1 (connect now), 7% choosing Option 2 (pay reservation fee now, connect later), and 20% choosing Option 3 (not interested to connect). For more information on each choice, please visit the LMUD website. As a reminder, this survey does not obligate the homeowner to abide by their selection; it was initiated to help us better understand the extent of the desire for our proposed sewer system. For this proposal to pass, we needed to present these findings to the Lakeway MUD (LMUD) Board of Directors who had final say on whether or not the project would move forward. The proposal was presented to the Board at the regularly scheduled May Board Meeting, which was held on May 9. Like all of our board meetings, this one was open to the public and held at our office, 1097 Lohmans Crossing Rd. A few affected home owners were in attendance with no opposing comments presented. The Board passed a motion moving forward with Phase 1 of the project, which means that funding has been secured for developing the infrastructure required to support Phase 1 and Phase 2, as well as connecting all houses that fall in the Phase 1 area. Phase 1 consists of about 324 houses around Live Oak Golf Course (see LMUD website for details). Phase I Details Phase 1 involves the installation of the main wastewater collection lines at the rear of the residential properties along 12

Lakeway Voice - July 2018

the golf course, where few existing utilities and developed improvements exist. This initial phase also involves relocation and upsizing a lift station, (L-3), which is currently located in an area with access issues for utility staff. Relocation is to a more accessible location off Flamingo Boulevard, on the west side of the airport runway. The new lift station will supply a 10-inch force main directed south and parallel the airport runway, beneath Lakeway Boulevard, and towards the West plant (S-5 Water Recycling Plant). An 8-inch gravity line will be installed to reroute flows from the old lift station (L-3) to the new lift station. The Phase 1 project also includes plans to expand the reclaimed water system by installation of reclaimed water piping parallel to the proposed sewer piping throughout the Live Oak Golf Course, allowing conversion of the 324 homes from potable irrigation to beneficial reuse irrigation (there will be an additional cost to homeowners who choose to hookup to this reuse water system). Based on a savings of approximately 93,000 gallons per day of potable water per year, a grant from LCRA in the amount of $100,000 to help pay for the reclaimed water system extension has been approved and is pending signatures of acceptance from LMUD. The total project cost is projected to be $7.2 million (M), with $5.8 M allocated to Phase 1 and a remaining $1.4 M to the final Phase 2 (to be approved at a later date). Currently, we are continuing to develop a time line as to when we can begin to break ground. We will continue to keep you updated on the progress of this project; however you are welcome to call or e-mail us with any questions or concerns you may have. Information meetings will be scheduled in the near future once we have more details. We ask that you please comply with the watering schedules to conserve our precious resource…WATER! Odd numbered addresses: Wednesday and Saturday, Even Numbered addresses: Thursday and Sundays, Commercial: Tuesday and Fridays. No watering is allowed between the hours of 10AAM and 7PM. We thank all of our customer base for the great cooperation we have had to date in adhering to the schedule, and we also thank those citizens who have reported violations to us, so we could respond and stop the violation and get compliance. For additional information on water saving tips and more please visit our website at www.lakewaymud.org. Sincerely, Earl Foster, General Manager, LMUD Copyright © 2018 Peel, Inc.

Wildland Fire Precautions With warmer temperatures and drying vegetation, residents need to be reminded of the need for wildfire/brush fire safety awareness and preparedness. Do not park vehicles on the dry grass. The heat from the vehicle’s exhaust system can cause the grass to catch fire. Remove combustible materials from around your home. Keep grass mowed short. Pack critical medicines, important documents, and family heirlooms to be ready to leave at a moment’s notice. Agree on an evacuation plan that includes what to do if you get separated and where you’ll go in case of evacuation. TEN SIMPLE STEPS TO PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WILDLAND FIRE

Wildfire can strike home if you have not taken some steps to protect your house and property. The actions and precautions listed below are designed to help you prepare your home and lessen the threat of wildland fire damage to you and your property. 1. LPG/propane tanks should be far enough away from buildings for valves to be shut off in case of fire. Keep area around the tank clear of flammable vegetation. 2. Store gasoline in an approved safety can away from occupied buildings. 3. All combustibles such as firewood, wooden picnic tables, boats and stacked lumber should be kept away from structures. 4. Clear roof surfaces and gutters regularly to avoid build-up of flammable materials such as leaves and other debris. 5. Remove branches from trees to a height of 15 feet or more. 6. In rural areas, clear a fuel break of at least three times the fuel length around all structures. 7. Have fire tools handy such as: ladder long enough to reach your roof, shovel, rake and a bucket or two for water. 8. Place connected garden hoses at all sides of your home for emergency use. 9. Assure that you and your family know all emergency exits from your home. 10. Assure that you and your family know all emergency exits from your neighborhood. Each family should be proactive to prepare for emergencies: Prepare a Basic Emergency Supply Kit; Make a Plan for Safety and Communicating with Family; Be Informed; and Get Involved in Preparing the Community.
