2014 Hurricane Season – Be Prepared

The 2014 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins June 1st and ends on November 30th. Meteorologists at Colorado State University are forecasting a lower-than-average hurricane season due to unfavorable upper wind patterns and cooler-than-normal water over the area where most Atlantic hurricanes form. Although the prediction notes only a 19% chance of landfall along the Gulf Coast, it takes only one landfall event near close to home to make this an active season. Therefore, residents along the Gulf Coast should prepare for the upcoming hurricane season regardless of the forecast. The Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management reminds residents to 1) get a kit, 2) make a plan and 3) stay informed. Following is a list, compiled by The Weather Channel, of the most critical supplies to have on hand, well before a hurricane threatens: At least a 3-day and preferably a 7-day supply of water (one gallon per person per day) • Non-perishable food • Formula, diapers, and other baby supplies • Manual can opener • First aid kit • Prescription and non-prescription medicines • Toiletries • Cell phones and battery-powered cell phone chargers • Battery-powered radios and flashlights • Plenty of batteries • Extra cash • Blankets, sleeping bags, books, and games (especially if evacuating) For more information on hurricanes and emergency preparedness, please check out the following websites: EMERGENCY/PREPAREDNESS INFORMATION www.nhc.noaa.gov/prepare/ www.redcross.org/prepare/disaster/hurricane www.bt.cdc.gov/disasters/hurricanes/ www.ready.gov/hurricanes www.hcoem.org/Documents/HurricanePreparednessChecklist.pdf Copyright © 2014 Peel, Inc.

Yard

of the

NEW DIRT

Month

May May Yard of the Month honors go to Barbara and Bob Adair of 5250 Bryanhurst Lane. This is lovely, wellmaintained home and yard. They have neatly trimmed shrubs and healthy grass. The flowerbeds contain a wide variety of in-ground, potted and hanging, plants and flowers. They have bridal veil, plumbago, hibiscus, petunias, snapdragons, pansies, mums and more. Our thanks to the Adairs, long-time Terra Nova residents, for keeping up such a beautiful yard. Many of you may know the Adairs from the swim team days of old. Bob served for over thirty years on the Louetta Road Utility District and twice on the Civic Association, and he still helps out at the subdivision parties where he is an expert snow cone maker.

The Recipe Box Susan Tsujimoto, Editor OK, I have a sweet tooth! …and we usually make at least one weekend morning run to HEB for their cinnamon twists! But lately, we’ve been trying to cut back on sugar, so I’ve been trying out different muffin recipes, and this one I particularly like. It’s sweet enough to satisfy and healthy to boot! Make a batch of these muffins on the weekend, and you’ll have a healthy substitute for those donuts as well as a quick grab-and-go breakfast for the rest of the week.

Ellie Krieger’s Healthy Apple Muffins www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ellie-krieger/apple-muffins-recipe.html

• Cooking spray • 1/4 cup chopped pecans • 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 cup all-purpose flour • 1 cup whole wheat pastry flour • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon fine salt

• 1/4 cup canola oil • 2 large eggs • 1 cup natural applesauce • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 3/4 cup low fat buttermilk • 1 Golden Delicious apple, peeled, cored and cut into 1/4inch pieces

Instructions: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Coat a 12-capacity standard muffin pan with cooking spray. In a small bowl, mix together the pecans, 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar and the cinnamon. Set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose and whole wheat flour, baking soda and salt. In a large bowl, whisk the remaining 3/4 cup sugar and the oil until combined. Add the eggs, one at a time, whisking well after each addition. Whisk in the applesauce and vanilla. Whisk in the flour mixture in two batches, alternating with the buttermilk. Whisk just until combined. Gently fold in the apple chunks. Pour the batter into the prepared muffin pan and sprinkle with the pecan mixture. Tap the pan on the counter a few times to remove any air bubbles. Bake until a wooden pick inserted in center of one of the muffins comes out clean, 20 to 25 minutes. Let cool on a wire rack for 15 minutes. Run a knife around the muffins to loosen them and unmold. Cool completely on the rack.

LRUD WATER TIP

Please check your sprinkler system for leaks, zone running times, and direction of sprinkler heads. Many gallons of water are wasted each time your sprinkler system is run by water going into the street. A few minutes of your time can save your plants and save you money. Grass and flowerbeds do not need the same amount of water. Set the zones for your yard and flower beds to different lengths of time. Overwatering can lead to runoff-down the street, root rot, or grass fungus like brown patch. Under watering can make you think something is wrong with your irrigation system because your plants and flowers are not doing well. The time of day your system runs is also important. Systems that run during the “heat of the day” lose most of the water to evaporation. If the sun is shining and it is very hot while your system is running, it can actually burn your plants. If you haven’t checked your irrigation system’s clock, please do so. If you would like brochures or information on how to water your lawn and flower beds please contact LRUD director Debby Cariss at mutts.cariss@gmail.com.

The “Take Care of Texas” Guide to Yard Care PLANT SELECTION AND CARE Using native and well-adapted plants is one of the easiest ways to create a low-maintenance and environmentally sound yard. The many advantages of using native plants include using less water, reducing the need for soil modification, and using little or no fertilizer. They are less susceptible to pest problems, and are tolerant of stressful environments such as drought. Incorporate a variety of plants to provide food and cover for a variety of living things. Diversity also minimizes damage from pests because many of them attack only one plant species. Dense plantings can provide shade that keeps out invading weeds. Avoid frequent or deep cultivation, which can damage plant roots, dry out the soil, disturb healthy soil organisms, and bring weed seeds to the surface where they can germinate. Cover all bare soil between plants with a solid mulch layer. Visit www.KeepCyFairBeautiful.org to access free “Take Care of Texas” publications and a Guide to Native Plants
