NEIGHBORS ENJOY HOLIDAY LIGHTS BY CARRIAGE RIDE

Betty Trent The Annual Holiday Carriage Rides went off without a hitch last December 15th on a brisk Sunday evening. Neighbors were driven around Pemberton in eight carriages drawn by Percherons and Clydesdales, as illuminated as the holiday lights they passed. Fortified by hot chocolate, Maine Root sodas, cookies and brownies, Pembertonians enjoyed a wide display of amazing lights and elaborate decorations put up by the neighbors along Harris and adjacent streets. Thanks to Nikki Faulkner and Laura Bennett for pulling this event off in high hat style. Thanks to all the neighbors who decorated so beautifully this year, their efforts were enjoyed by all. Thanks also go to Frost Bank for donating bottled water and mini-flashlights for the children. If interested in organizing next year’s Carriage Rides, please contact Kimberly Comstock at kimberlydcomstock@gmail.com.

The Pemberton Journal Correction to the Board Announcement

Craig Duewall and Sasha Edwards were mistakenly included in the announcement last month as stepping down from the Board for 2013. Craig will continue on the Board as the Traffic and Safety Committee chair, which includes management of the Security Program. Sasha Edwards served her complete term and did not run for re-election, however she has graciously agreed to continue to keep the books for PHNA, working with our new Treasurer, Jane Hayman.

The Pemberton Journal Security Support Needed! As most of you know, Pemberton Heights has a private security firm patrolling the neighborhood most evenings. We currently have approximately $7,000 in our Security Account. This amount will be exhausted by the end of March. We need to raise an additional $22,000 to completely fund the Pemberton Heights Security Program for 2014. This amount is consistent with previous years and is paid by generous neighbors making donations. The following are facts about the program: 1. We employ the same security company that provides afterhours service in the Old Enfield neighborhood. 2. The security patrol operates 4-5 nights a week. The Security Program allows Pemberton Heights to have the added protection of a security officer making rounds most nights of the week. 3. Patrols are performed in a marked security car/truck. 4. During each patrol, each street in Pemberton Heights is patrolled multiple times. 5. Each day we receive a written report or summary of the previous night’s patrol. 6. If the security officer observes any suspicious activity, he immediately calls Austin Police. 7. Each patrol car has GPS, so we can ensure that each street in

Pemberton Heights is getting coverage. 8. The security patrol keeps a special eye on homes that participate in the “Home Away” program. Only homes that donate to the security patrol are allowed to participate in the Home Away program. 9. You do not have to be a member of the PHNA to make a donation. The donation amount is discretionary. The typical donation is $150, which is the cost of one-night’s patrol. We have been fortunate during the past year to avoid much of the crime that has been reported in the Bryker Woods and Tarrytown areas. We believe that this is a direct result of the Pemberton Heights security patrol. If you would like to make a donation to support this crime reduction program, you can visit www.pembertonheights.org or http://pembertonheights.org/security. You can also mail your donation to “PHNA Security Donation,” P.O. Box 50388, Austin, TX 78763-0388. Please take a minute and make a donation. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at (512) 6102716 or (512) 771-0016. You may also email me at CDuewall@ shannongracey.com. Thank you, Craig A. Now is a Great Time to Protect your Valuables!

Tina Weinberger, Coordinator, Pemberton Heights Neighborhood Watch Now that the holidays are over and you may have received many valuables as gifts, now is a good time to consider identifying and cataloging your valuables in case of theft. Keep a detailed inventory of your valuable possessions, including a description of the items, date of purchase, original value, and any serial numbers. Consider adding a photographic or video record of any valuable objects, heirlooms and antiques. Keep a copy in a safe place away from home — this is a good precaution in case of fires or other disasters. For further protection, mark your valuables with your driver’s license number with an engraver you can borrow from your local police representative. Identified items are harder for a burglar to dispose of and easier for police to recover. Pemberton Heights Neighborhood Watch is a weapon-free neighborhood program that encourages neighbors to look out for each other.  Cohesive communities are safe communities!  Join PHNW to meet your neighbors and reduce property crime in Pemberton Heights!
