INTERIOR DESIGN PROFILE
ho is Ambiance?
We are the longest-established interior design business in the Aberdeen area. I am Karen McKimmie, the principal designer, and my colleague is David Mackie.
surroundings so that I can be open to inspiration whether it comes from nature, fashion or the books I read. I think it’s essential to go to trade shows and art exhibitions and keep up with current trends so as to never become static. It helps to keep flow and creativity in my work.
What is your design ethos? I think of design as an ever-evolving concept. My designs are inspired by all sorts of things, including current trends. I’m constantly amalgamating (and eliminating) these to develop and adapt ideas for my clients. I have a passion for design, whether it’s interiors, fashion, art or nature, and I like to draw on this complex source of inspiration to create something simple, strong, clean and elegant – streamlining those eclectic sources into a design that connects the client with the space I’m creating for them.
Are you working on any design innovations? I don’t believe that there are any design innovations (perhaps with the exception of technology and material composition). As designers we can only interpret and draw on design over the centuries and create something authentic and individual. The principles of design are colour, tone, composition and pattern/ texture, and I would hope that the way I translate these elements in each individual project is, if not innovative, certainly original.
Tell us about your biggest design challenges My biggest challenge at the moment is designing my own apartment! I find it inspiring to work with clients in their homes and the design usually evolves organically and easily. But I find I can’t be objective enough in my own home because I am constantly seeing wonderful new fabrics, wall coverings and ideas. It’s a real challenge to narrow down my selection. I need more rooms! Other than that, I prefer to see challenges as opportunities – to show we can meet a tight deadline or budget, find that elusive paint colour or to make the smallest home look spacious.
What should people know about your business? David and I form a very strong and successful design team at Ambiance. We work on projects of every size and on every aspect of interior design, from initial architectural conception to the last finishing details of a completed project. Our style is predominantly “classic contemporary” but we like to think of ourselves as versatile but always producing work of innate style.
What inspires your designs? I can find inspiration anywhere. I’d like to think that I am constantly aware of everything in my 6
Five words that sum up your business? Creative, evolving, reputable, exciting, professional.

INTERIOR DESIGN PROFILE
ho is Ampersand?
Design director Jacqueline Fisken and her team have been established in Edinburgh since 1991, specialising in interior design and interior architecture.
What is your design ethos? We believe that great interior design is all about capturing that elusive quality that makes a home somewhere wonderful in which to spend time. We design for our clients, not ourselves, so we start each project with a blank piece of paper and create a personal, natural, evolved style rather than a pre-determined “look”. We want our clients to be inspired but at the same time to be in their element.
Tell us about your biggest design challenges The biggest challenge is also the most rewarding: getting to know our clients so we can understand what inspires them. Knowing this helps us to find out what our clients truly desire even when they often don’t yet know it themselves. Anything less is just “interiors-by-numbers”.
What should people know about your business? They should know what our existing clients have said about us over the last 20 years – they have spilled the beans on our website.
Five words that sum up your business? Are you working on any design innovations? Our sister company, Fisk & Co, showcases our own unique furniture, rugs and accessory ranges alongside collaborations with outstanding Scottish interior craftsmen and women. Our New Town rug epitomises our goal: designed by us, inspired by Edinburgh, made in Scotland.
What inspires your designs? People – how they live and how they want to live. We want to help with the most important space in their lives – their home – to create a sanctuary, a backdrop for their family memories, and the launch-pad from which they can rise to meet the challenges that each new day brings. 8

Bryce McKenzie Design was founded in 2008 in Edinburgh. Bryce and his team have two decades’ worth of experience in interior design.
lines that make them easy to live with. I like to introduce something unexpected or to juxtapose different period styles as the result is more sophisticated and stimulating than following convention.
What is your design ethos?
Tell us about your biggest challenge
We listen carefully to our clients to ensure we create a design scheme that is uniquely suited to them. We want them to be involved in the process and feel their home is truly theirs. We don’t have a ‘signature look’ but we do use signature techniques – the layering of textures, pattern and a balanced use of colour, along with very close attention to detail and quality.
I once designed a home without being able to visit it! It was a client’s second home, on the Isle of Arran, but the timescale was so tight I couldn’t assess it in person prior to the designs being decided. We worked instead from photographs then carefully organised measuring, fitting and installation. Happily, the results were perfect and the client was delighted.
Are you working with any design innovations?
What should people know about your business?
Our recent move to a larger showroom means we can offer a full bespoke service. The entire Bryce McKenzie furniture collection is available to view and can be made to your exact dimensions. We also collaborate with Michael Hart cabinetry to present new designs. We’re the first interior design showroom in Scotland to fully house our own collection. Clients often had to travel to London to try out the right sofa – until now.
Not only do we complete projects on time, within budget and in an uncommonly well organised way, we also frequently exceed our clients’ expectations. We produce high-quality interiors and absorb all the stress of the project, allowing the client to enjoy the process.
Five words that sum up your business Innovative, unique, elegant, understated, quality
What inspires your designs? Whenever I design a room or a piece of furniture, I try to think in terms of balance and simplicity. Warmth comes from organically inspired shapes and textures. My upholstered pieces have clean 10

ho is Designworks?
Designworks is a team of designers and architects set up by Henrietta Simpson in 1982 in Glasgow’s west end.
What is your design ethos? We aim to create classic, timeless, sophisticated design solutions, whatever the budget. We work closely with our clients at every stage of the project to achieve a successful outcome, and rigorous attention to detail is maintained throughout the process.
Are you working on any design innovations? It varies from project to project. As each job’s requirements are specific, we endeavour to form individual solutions based on our extensive knowledge and experience in the residential and commercial sectors. We specialise in commissions for private clients and in creating inspirational architectural and interior design solutions.
What inspires your designs? We are lucky to work with clients who own the most wonderful properties – a true mix of Scottish architectural styles. The detailing, scale and proportion of these rooms offer great inspiration to how we approach the design concept.
Tell us about your biggest design challenges There have been many over the years. Most recently, we have been running a project where 12
we had to complete a substantial extension and remodel the interior of a home (including a hall, kitchen and bathroom) while the clients were on holiday – six weeks from start to finish. Currently we are designing and building a beachfront house on an exceptionally narrow plot in a conservation village where the clients are keen to have their new home in a very modern aesthetic.
What should people know about your business? We can offer a full professional interior design service uniquely in conjunction with Designworks architectural consultancy to create imaginative residential and commercial projects throughout Britain and abroad. We have an extensive design showroom offering a diverse range of furniture, lighting, fabrics and accessories.
Five words that sum up your business? Professional, approachable, passionate, diligent, creative.

INTERIOR DESIGN PROFILE
ho is Emma Clanfield?
Emma is an experienced, creative interior designer with a great eye for colour.
What is your design ethos? I aim to design a warm, welcoming home that invites you to relax at the end of the day surrounded by the things you love. I strongly believe a room should feel as if it has evolved over time – and I enjoy adding a bit of humour to a scheme.
What inspires your designs? Having originally trained as a textile designer, I am drawn to patterned fabrics and wallpapers. I like to use hand-printed fabrics from British companies, mixing up the prints with textured weaves, subtle tweeds and unusual plaids. After taking into consideration the client’s existing furniture and artwork, I’ll often base a scheme around a fabric that has caught my eye – and after that everything just seems to fall into place.
Tell us about your biggest design challenges Three years ago I started developing former lockkeeper’s cottages on Scotland’s canals into holiday lets; this led to the refurbishment of a narrow boat for the same client. It was a challenge to give a fresh look to a canal boat and to fit in everything required in a holiday home into a space less than two metres wide! I kept it light and bright, commissioning multifunctional furniture and adding in luxury with the upholstered walls of the 14
sleeping cabin. I am now working on ‘Bothy Pods’ with the same client, and am looking forward to the challenge of maximising the available space.
What should people know about your business? We always work with a building to make the most of its space and identity, whether it’s a country house, city apartment or holiday cottage. With the canal holiday cottages, we reinstated lost original features and added storage and character. Old lock gates were stripped back and refashioned as fireplace mantels and used alongside tweeds, tartans and hand-printed linens. This gives warmth to a holiday let where clutter needs to be kept to a minimum but where first impressions really count. In addition to individual homes the decoration of holiday cottages is an area we offer as a complete service. Once the design has been approved and a schedule put in place, the client can turn up at the end, knowing everything will be ready for them.
Five words that sum up your business? Contemporary, creative, comfortable, colourful, versatile.

INTERIOR DESIGN PROFILE
ho is Farmore Interiors?
Established in 1996 by Juliet RathboneTulleth, the St Andrews-based company offers a full interior design service.
What is your design ethos? My team and I are dedicated to delivering style, quality and a package tailored to each client’s individual requirements. We love to take customers through the whole project, from those tentative first steps all the way to completion, offering assistance with every aspect of the job. Attention to detail is our forte, as is understanding clients’ ideas and striving to fulfil their wishes.
Are you working on any design innovations? Having recently undertaken the complete conversion of a former bakehouse into four luxury flats, designing everything from the layout to the soft furnishings, we have a keen understanding on the requirements that make a house a home. From designing bathrooms in very small spaces to creating warm and comfortable living areas, this was a great project to manage and create.
What inspires your designs? Having parents from Europe and the US has broadened my appreciation of a wide variety of lifestyles. I was lucky enough to have a grandmother who lived in Beverley Hills and this allowed me to do my formative training with some of the best. Inspiration is drawn from art, textures and nature, with a sense of tradition and comfort. 16
Tell us about your biggest design challenges Creating space in small areas can be a challenge, but with the use of good lighting and colours, we can make a room feel large and open. No house is a home without decorative accessories, and our years of expertise and knowledge allow us to create the desired ambience in any living space.
What should people know about your business? Clients can be assured that the job, whether it’s a whole house renovation or simply a pair of curtains, will be completed on time and on budget, with attention to all the client’s details and specifications. For complete peace of mind, we can also take on total project management, including property inspections and planning permission.

ho is Fiona S Finlay?
I set up my company in 1994 to create elegant, timeless interiors for residential and commercial clients, both here and abroad.
What is your design ethos? Our guiding belief is that the power of design can enrich people’s lives. We create places for living and working that enhance our clients’ lifestyles with beautiful and original solutions. With an uncompromising attention to detail, we aim to look beyond the brief and exceed expectations.
Are you working on any design innovations? We are looking at creative solutions to home offices, making technology-friendly environments – keeping people plugged in when and where they want to be.
What inspires your designs? I find creative influences everywhere – on my travels, at home in the Scottish Highlands, in nature, art, light, architecture, contemporary sculpture, antique decorative textiles, literature and collaborating with my specialist craftsmen.
Tell us about your biggest design challenges Every project presents its own challenges, from a complex brief to the practical considerations of the building. Our role is to solve problems and we adopt a fresh approach to handle the constraints 18
of each new project. The constant overriding challenge, however, is always to bring the project in on time and on budget.
What should people know about your business? ho is Fiona Wilson Interiors?
I am a qualified interior designer with over 18 years’ design experience and a lot of enthusiasm for what I do.
what I’m looking to create, I will find inspiration everywhere. From that initial meeting through the design process to the completed project is a fun journey for me and the client to go on together – and I love that!
What is your design ethos? My design ethos is to provide a friendly, professional interior design service that potential clients will feel comfortable using. Creating personal and affordable spaces that people love to live in is always my aim in all my projects. Building relationships and developing trust and understanding is very important too.
Are you working on any design innovations? I design individual schemes for my clients, so no two are ever the same – the rooms or homes I create reflect my clients’ lifestyles. I love seeing all the new fabrics and wallpapers and clever designs in lighting and furniture that are coming on to the market. I also love using beautiful antique pieces or rediscovering items from a bygone era that can be made part of a timeless scheme.
Tell us about your biggest challenges Sometimes it’s simply about giving clients confidence and understanding at the start and making what could be a difficult refurbishment into a fun process that I can take them through from beginning to end. At other times, it’s just about the logistics – like getting a bespoke 42m-long roll of carpet up a flight of stairs!
What should people know about your business? Whether it’s a small piece of advice or a large project I am always happy to help – customer service is something I take great pride in.
Five words that sum up your business? Friendly, professional, reliable, experienced, creative.
What inspires your designs? Inspiration for my designs comes from my clients and their surroundings. Through meeting them and discussing the brief, I can very quickly visualise design schemes which will reflect their personalities and lifestyles. And once I know 20

ho is Murray & Murray?
Led by director Gillian McCollum and her team, Murray & Murray specialises in designing hand-made bespoke kitchens and interiors.
What is your design ethos? We don’t believe in having a signature house style; every property and every client is different, so every design should reflect that. Fortunately, as a bespoke company, we are in the perfect position to respond without compromise.
Are you working on any design innovations? In the summer we launched our new venture, Off The Peg Cabinetry, a totally new way of getting a beautiful, hand-built kitchen at an affordable price. There is no bespoke design, project management, delivery, fitting or painting service – you do that yourself. All we do is the cabinetry, offering the same high standard of materials and skilled craftsmanship that we’ve delivered for Murray & Murray from our Fife workshop since 1989. This standardised cabinetry collection can be painted and furnished to suit your own personal style.
What inspires your designs? We’re very lucky to be involved with clients who own the most wonderful properties: a true mix of Scottish architectural styles. The details, scale and proportion of their rooms offer great inspiration to how we approach the design concept. 22
Tell us about your biggest challenges One of our recent projects was in a room that was entirely barrel-vaulted from one end to the other. It also had rugged exposed stone walls. Creating a design that addressed both features was very challenging! Despite this, the project ran smoothly, and the finished look was quite exquisite.
What should people know about your business? We are one of the few truly bespoke companies out there. We take a huge amount of pride in our work and we love what we do.

ho is SLJ Interiors?
Sylvia Lawson Johnston has been in the interior design business since the 1980s, and she and her team are now based in Oban.
What is your design ethos? Essentially, to achieve what the client wants. Our aim is to interpret the brief and take all the schemes and ideas through to the finished design. What we really want to do is to take all the agony out of decision-making and the day-today management of projects, so that the whole process is as enjoyable as possible for the client.
suppliers, all of which requires great attention to detail to ensure the desired results are achieved on time and on budget.
What should people know about your business? We work with our clients on an individual basis. We can either take all the pressure off and manage to whole process, from initial discussions with the architects and builders to soft furnishings and picture hanging, or we can simply provide schemes for people to work from themselves.
Five words that sum up your business Are you working on any design innovations? We have incorporated a comprehensive lighting design in many of our projects, and are now including all the new technology that LED involves to create effective interiors. There are also some fantastic new carpets being introduced which offer wonderful selections of new tones and textures. We are increasingly being asked to develop bathrooms too, with the detail and precision our clients expect.
Tell us about your biggest challenges Very often we are involved in custom designing many elements of a project. That means we work with an incredibly diverse range of suppliers and craftsmen to achieve this, from stonemasons to carpet manufacturers, cabinetmakers to trimming 24

ho is JAMstudio?
Established by John Wingate and MarieLouise Dunk, JAMstudio is an award-winning RIAS chartered architectural practice based in the north-east of Scotland.
What is your design ethos? The practice has a strong design-led ethos: we create simple, beautiful, practical and stylish designs that delight our clients. We are passionate about great design and its power to create amazing spaces, whether for a one-off family home or for an inspirational workplace.
Are you working with any design innovations? We are fascinated by creative lighting design and it plays a major role in our projects. We’ve designed and manufactured a special new pendant lamp for a client and we are constantly experimenting with new LED technologies. We’ve created a super low-energy house for a client on a tight budget and are always researching materials and green energy systems. This allows us to design sustainable buildings that don’t cost the earth to run.
Tell us about your biggest challenges The day-to-day tussle with balancing the three cornerstones of any project – time, cost and quality. Equally challenging is finding the right approach to give our clients confidence to do something a little bit different from the norm. Working within the constraints of the local planning and building byelaws and seeing how far they can be pushed is exciting and sometimes stressful, but we’ve had a fair amount of success in getting projects approved.
What should people know about your business? That we are very determined to get the best for our clients, that we are open, honest and have a no-nonsense approach that seems to work well with clients and contractors alike. That you don’t need piles of cash to build a new house (but it does help!). We have a young and energetic staff with boundless enthusiasm, a huge amount of creativity and a great eye for detail. We love what we do for a living, and we are proud to have celebrated the practice’s tenth birthday recently.
Five words that sum up your business? What inspires your designs? The natural world, the use of colour, form and texture, the way people use and interact with each other in buildings and the way a building can manipulate people’s behaviour. We like simple geometries and making clever use of building materials to create beautiful interiors full of contrast, light and space. We really enjoy working within the building constraints to create the most elegant designs that we can. 26
