BUSINESS PROFILE

Tell us about Ashley Ann Gavin and Scott Bremner, managing directors: We specialise in high-quality kitchens, although our offer for bedrooms, bathrooms and home offices is also strong. Even though our products are very high quality, our pricing is extremely competitive – and largely because we also manufacture what we sell. This sets us apart from most of our competitors, who simply act as retailers for someone else’s product, which, at our level in the market, is typically made in Germany. What should potential clients know about you? We’re family-owned and run, with the company being founded some 35 years ago by our mum and dad. From humble beginnings with a showroom and small manufacturing facility in Thurso, we now employ around 200 people. And along with our own showrooms in Scotland, we also supply around 100 independent dealerships which are mainly in England. Any key questions a customer should be asking? It’s perhaps less about questions and more about sparking a conversation that’s going to establish a potential working relationship. We encourage our showroom teams to play their part in this, because once they understand what a potential customer is after and what sort of budget they have in mind, they’re in a position to help and guide them through the design and selection process. What is Ashley Ann’s signature style? We don’t really have one. Our Caledonia In-frame range of kitchens is relatively traditional in design, while our Fusion range is much more contemporary. What we offer reflects a desire to meet the requirements and tastes of our customers, rather than forcing them towards a particular style. What’s exclusive to the company? That not only are we also the manufacturer, but that we carry this out at a state-of-the-art facility in the north of the country, which we’ve continually

invested in over the decades. Manufacturing what we sell also allows us the flexibility to offer bespoke products to our customers – for example, a one-off cabinet to fit a tricky corner of a kitchen is no problem at all for us. What has been your biggest challenge? Certainly since the start of the pandemic and with all the disruption this has brought, it’s been to successfully operate and ensure we still offer high levels of service to our customers. But we’ve got through this with a host of new measures such as virtual showroom tours and delivering samples to the customer’s door. Going forward, we know we’ll have to remain agile in an ever-changing world. What motivates and inspires you? Lots of things, but especially colours and our dramatic Highland landscape – which continually inspires a sense of ambition and success. What are the key considerations on a project? From a customer’s perspective, that you should always feel valued in any dealings with a potential supplier. If you don’t, you’re probably talking to the wrong people. Give us your top tips for a successful project 1. Have a sense of ambition and don’t feel constrained by your own limitations on design and implementation – there are plenty of experts out there to help you. 2. Do in-depth research online to find inspiration – Pinterest is particularly useful. 3. Set yourself a maximum budget, otherwise you can go too far down the design journey only to find that it’s never going to be achievable for what you have to spend. 4. Find the right suppliers and tradespeople to ensure your vision can become a reality. Good design is… Achieving both aesthetic pleasure and required functionality in one solution.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Tell us about BANN James McAuley, managing director: We specialise in creating exceptional spaces, whether that’s a sympathetically restored period property or a cutting-edge new-build. We go above and beyond to ensure our clients’ needs are fulfilled, no matter how ambitious these may be. What should potential clients know about you? We’re known for our professionalism, experience, customer service and creativity. We’re not like the average construction company; we oversee all aspects of the build, including providing trades and taking care of building warrants. We can also help appoint an architect and/or a designer, if required. We have strong relationships with the country’s top architectural firms and designers, allowing us to undertake projects of great ambition and quality. Any key questions a customer should be asking? Are my ideas achievable within my budget? Will my ideas meet building and planning regulations? Is the timescale I’ve outlined realistic?

New Town (pictured opposite). In order to reinstate the property’s original features, we installed new cornicing, architraves and skirting boards throughout. This was a great challenge due to the property’s quirky curved corners. We made all of the doors to fit the existing openings ourselves because they’re not off-the-shelf sizes. What motivates and inspires you? We like being challenged by our clients to incorporate their lifestyles, needs and ideas into extraordinary designs. This means we have to draw on our collective skills and experience to create spaces that excel in both style and functionality. What are the key considerations on a project? Before you embark on any project, it’s important to question what kind of space you’d like to create and how you want it to function both now and in the future. Be clear about your budget and always have a contingency fund for unforeseen circumstances.

What’s exclusive to the company? All of our work is entirely bespoke; we’ve created amazing glass floors and installed automatic pet doors in stone walls, among many other things.

Give us your top tips for a successful project 1. Enjoy the planning and design process and seek out plenty of ideas and inspiration. 2. Tell your architect and builder your budget (and contingency) before you start. They’ll advise you if it’s realistic for what you hope to achieve. 3. Be prepared for unforeseen circumstances and be aware that any changes will add to your costs and cause delays. 4. Appoint a project manager with a proven track record of overseeing projects similar to the project you’re hoping to achieve. 5. Don’t scrimp on the finishes. Painting and decorating, flooring and light fittings combine to create a professional, polished look.

What has been your biggest challenge? We recently conducted major structural works to fully refurbish a basement apartment in Edinburgh’s

Good design is… Timeless, functional, comfortable, visually appealing and long-lasting.

What is BANN’s signature style? We partner with a variety of architectural firms and designers, so we don’t have one signature style. Instead, we have three signature qualities that guide every project: longevity, adaptability and quality. We’re not a quick-fix solution; we build with our clients’ futures in mind. We take the time to understand our clients’ lifestyles in order to ensure the exceptional spaces we create will last.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Tell us about Bauen Design Licia Di Pasquale, owner and director: We specialise in luxury kitchens made by Poggenpohl, offering a very complete design and installation service which includes the project management and scheduling of all the trades involved. We also tailor every design to the customer’s needs. What should potential clients know about you? We now offer a ‘dressing service’ where we purchase all the accessories for the client’s kitchen, finishing off their interior with plates, cutlery, vases, plants, artwork and more. We agree a budget with the client then go ‘shopping’, choosing all the pieces to give them a complete look that you could easily see in a magazine. Any key questions a customer should be asking? I’d say that it is more about the questions that we ask you! By getting to know our clients and understanding how they use their existing kitchen, we can design the best space for them. This is an incredibly useful process for us, since the more information we have, the closer we are to finding the right solution for each client. What is Bauen Design’s signature style? Our designs are contemporary, with clean lines and no fuss. We like to ensure they’re timeless but with a certain edge. What’s exclusive to the company? We will supply and fit beautiful Poggenpohl kitchens, but that’s not where it ends. We offer a full interior design service from start to completion. We can supply all the finishing touches, including feature lighting by great European and British designers. We make built-in bench seating, which can be upholstered in any fabric you like. We used to recommend other firms for lighting and seating

but now we can do it all. Clients are delighted to have our input and have us make decisions on their behalf. They fully trust our insight and know we will do all we can to give them the best possible results. What has been your biggest challenge? We are currently working on a period property with decorative wall panelling that needs to remain in situ. We consulted with the local planning authorities and were advised that the panelling is of historic importance and can’t be touched. We have therefore had to design around this, which has resulted in a concept that our client adores and we are very proud of. What motivates and inspires you? Our team. We like to have brainstorming sessions on every project to ensure we create fresh concepts and are always inspired to be innovative. What are the key considerations on a project? Trust in the process: you need to be able to trust your designer and listen to their advice. Give us your top tips for a successful project 1. Find a designer you click with. 2. Know your budget and be upfront with the designer about what you hope to achieve. 3. Allow the designer to guide you on specification. 4. Consider the level of smart tech (Sonos, lighting systems, audio-visual, connectivity and so on) that you want to incorporate into your project. 5. Have a plan in place. Make sure all your decisions are made before your project starts. Good design is… All about finding the perfect balance between form and function.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Tell us about BRIC Bally Taylor, design director: BRIC specialises in luxury design. We pride ourselves on working closely with our clients, producing unique results that embody their personal style. I oversee our current projects and manage the other departments in the company. I love being creatively involved, and my role as design director gives me an amazing opportunity to lead a strong, confident group of professionals. We also create luxury lifestyle events, product designs and more. What should potential clients know about you? BRIC has been operating for around a decade, both in the UK and in Singapore and Hong Kong. Our global reach has allowed us to travel far and wide to find distinctive and individual pieces for our clients. We also have specialised knowledge of international markets and a property acquisition service, where we help clients find their perfect space, whether commercial or residential. What sort of questions should clients be asking? The key to a seamless project is transparency from both parties, so ask for references and find out how the designer works. At BRIC, we encourage as many questions as possible, so you have all the knowledge you need before deciding to go ahead. What is BRIC’s signature style? It’s in the fine details: top-quality wood grains, fine metals and wallpapers, perfectly aligned marbles, all coming together in flush, smooth intricacy. Our style is contemporary luxury with a conceptual twist. We offer aspiration in our design, showing what is truly possible and offering design solutions that match the client’s own style, all while being mindful of taste, space planning and preference.

What’s exclusive to the company? BRIC is a lifestyle. It provides a well-rounded experience, from the way you travel, to the way you live, to the products in your space which remind you of home. We have a select clientele list and our discreet nature allows our customers to trust us with any enquiry they might have. What has been your biggest challenge so far? At the start of the first Covid lockdown, we helped a commercial client transform their space via Zoom – new territory for all of us at that time. The project was a new way of working and taught us that we can succeed and surpass expectations anywhere. What are the key considerations on a project? I always tell people to try new styles and ideas; it’s great to be bold and make a statement. It’s equally key that your home feels like a sanctuary. My focus is practicality. What are the needs of the people I’m designing for? Do you need better access? More comfortable chairs? A lower sink for the small ones? Your home is your palace and a king would never accept less than perfect. That’s why we assist clients to create their version of living like royalty. Give us your top tips for a successful project 1. Create moodboards of your inspirations and design preferences. It will help you work out what you’re looking to achieve. 2. Use your measuring tape. You need accurate dimensions, not guestimates! 3. It’s normal to come across bumps in the road. If you hire an interior designer, you’ll have a dedicated team to help you overcome them. Good design is... The pursuit of luxury through the lens of our clients.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Tell us about Designworks Henrietta Simpson, principal director: Designworks is an interior design-led practice supported by an in-house architectural team. We provide clients with an inclusive interior design and architectural service and deal with residential and commercial projects throughout the UK. What should potential clients know about you? Established more than 40 years ago, Designworks is a family firm and now has two generations involved in the running of the business. We are a team of professional interior designers and architects with a large showroom and offices in Gibson Street in Glasgow’s west end. Between us, we have vast experience in all aspects of design and architecture. Any key questions a customer should be asking? Check that your designer specialises in the type of work that meets your requirements. Ask to see examples of some of their recently completed projects. And check that their workload will meet the timeline expectations you have for your own projects. What is Designworks’ signature style? We don’t have a signature style. Instead, each client’s requirements are assessed individually before we develop a solution (whether architectural or interior, or both) that satisfies all the requirements of the project. Only then will we proceed with the work. What’s exclusive to the company? Designworks provides a bespoke and personal interior design service working in conjunction with our own architectural practice to create imaginative and inspiring residential and commercial projects throughout the UK to suit

our clients requirements and budget. What has been your biggest challenge? Being involved in Scotland’s millennium project to restore the interior finishes of the Great Hall at Stirling Castle. We sourced, selected and made the 9m-high feature curtains. The decorative trimmings alone weighed around half a ton! What motivates and inspires you? We are constantly researching progressive interior and architectural trends both in the UK and abroad. We make annual visits to the best interior design exhibitions in the world and aim to broaden our knowledge of key sustainable technologies in an evolving industry. What are the key considerations on a project? It is never too early in a project to consult with or appoint an interior designer or architect – but invariably it can be too late. Give us your top tips for a successful project 1. Make sure the designer you select is appropriately qualified and experienced. 2. Consult the designer before your project begins. Don’t wait until it is already on site. 3. Take an open-minded approach when your designer presents you with possible alternative solutions – it is their role to take your project to the next level. 4. Trust your designer throughout the project from start to completion. 5. Visit Designworks. We have vast experience and are passionate about what we do. Good design is… A combination of client trust and Designworks’ involvement. We always aim to exceed your expectations.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Tell us about Farmore Interiors Juliet Rathbone, owner and designer: We are experts in creating beautiful homes. Following the client’s brief, we take a hands-on and honest approach, providing a fully personal service and focusing on attention to detail throughout. We love the initial site visit, then returning to the studio to put together schemes and different options. What should potential clients know about you? The Farmore business is diverse and includes a retail shop, our design studio and Farmore Home. The business is also involved in project management and suggests practical solutions for projects. For over 25 years, we have improved hundreds of properties in Scotland and further afield, from large-scale renovations to upgrading student flats. What sort of questions should clients be asking? Ask your designer about timescales and about the feasibility of making your dreams a reality. Talk about your budget too. Do you want to have a lot of input or would you prefer to give the designer free rein? We love it when clients ask us to take complete control, but working to a brief can be just as rewarding. What is your signature style? Comfortable luxury living, with a hint of the informal. What’s exclusive to the company? As well as our design studio, we have two showrooms in St Andrews’ South Street. Farmore Home offers a glimpse into the design minds of Farmore Interiors. The room sets allow you to imagine how these looks and pieces would work. We have dining, sitting and bedroom areas and our signature quirky bathroom and kitchen designs are showcased here too.

What has been your biggest challenge so far? One project was tricky as the house was a labyrinth of staircases and corridors. Making the layout flow seamlessly from room to room was challenging; we solved it by using neutral colours and coherent furniture throughout. What motivates and inspires you? We love tailoring the job to meet the brief, whether for new customers or our many repeat clients. We often take our starting point from artworks or the client’s personality – it’s so important that the decor reflects their lifestyle. What are the key considerations on a project? Don’t jump in immediately before you’ve thought it all through. Take your time and consider all the various elements carefully. If you’re not sure, start with neutrals and then accessorise as you go along. Give us your top tips for a successful project 1. Commission the services of a competent interior designer at the start to help with plans for lighting, electrical outlets, and so on. 2. Getting the lighting right is crucial in every design scheme. 3. If you’re unsure about which direction to go in, start neutral and add layers. 4. Don’t overcrowd the room before it’s complete. It’s better to build up the furnishings to create the desired effect. 5. Magazines are a great source of inspiration, so long as you’re aware that not every scheme would work in your space. Good design is… Understated elegance, respecting architecture, and using colour and cherished accessories to create a sense of comfort and style.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Tell us about Handle Studio Inc Gillian Brown and Karlyn Evans, founders and interior designers: Between us, we have combined experience of over 40 years in design. Our expertise and experience is grounded in a deep understanding of how to layer colour and texture to create timeless, elegant interiors with a truly thoughtful and refined aesthetic. We believe in spirited sophistication with a luxury edge. We’re a family-run business with integrity, passion and experience at the heart of everything we do. What interesting details should readers know about you? We’re family – cousins, in fact. We laugh a lot, thanks to decades of being comfortable with each other. We like to think we bring a dash of that warmth to all our projects and we take a personal approach, always. This ensures a truly bespoke service that our clients love. What is Handle Studio’s signature style? We choose not to limit ourselves to a specific aesthetic and endeavour always to seek out something new for every scheme. This ensures that each project has its own style, with a handwriting that is unique. We actively try to use natural fibres and, where possible, antiques or vintage pieces alongside the client’s existing treasures – this ultimately gives our designs a curated, layered look, grounded by personal objects, heirlooms and art. What motivates and inspires you? Having a natural passion for design, inspiration is everywhere. When we’re not working, we love to find inspiration from design fairs, books, and museums and galleries especially when we travel. Art seems to be a driving force for us, and we tend to find the most creative design houses reflect that love and who season on season bring us beautiful new things to work with and get excited by. We have a huge list of fabrics, wall coverings, lighting, furniture, rugs and more just waiting for the right client and the right brief.

What makes your company unique? As every project is unique, we consistently strive to create comfortable, beautiful rooms with playful, considered details grounded in practicality and purpose. We believe a home should be a reflection of its inhabitants - the things they love, the places they’ve travelled to and the objects and ideas that have inspired them. Throughout the design process, our approach remains personal, intuitive and considered. What has been your biggest challenge? Working on a project in London with the client in America and us based in Glasgow – we had some logistics to solve! Add in the pandemic making travel impossible at the time, and our ability to work remotely was tested. Samples left our studio and travelled across the Atlantic to the client. Having agreed on the look, feel and approach, we set about building and creating. We’re totally delighted with the results and, most importantly, we have another very happy Handle client. What words of wisdom can you offer clients? If you love it, and it makes you smile, that’s what matters. If you don’t love something, it has a shelf life before you tire of it and look to update, so take your time and find what you truly love. Give us your top tips for a successful project 1. Do a floor plan: if it doesn’t work in a drawing, it will never work in real life. 2. Trust us: we do the research and edit the options. 3. An overall vision is key: everything needs to work together for the final result to be successful. 4. Sustainability is crucial these days, buying something to last really is the best approach. 5. Find pieces you love and build your look from there. Good design is… Difficult to define, but there is no mistaking it when you see it. It is not one thing, because it is the sum of many parts, and the parts are always different.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Tell us about Jeffreys Interiors Jo Aynsley, design director: We specialise in full-service interior design projects, taking client enquiries from initial concept through to installation. Our diverse team of six interior designers use a little black book of trusted suppliers, makers and specialist trades to ensure every project is delivered to the highest standard and quality. We also try to make sure it’s an enjoyable process! What should potential clients know about you? Jeffreys has existed in Edinburgh for many years. Long before we moved to Stockbridge, we had a shop on Lothian Road (opened in 1937) which was renowned for having the best net curtains in town. This year, the original owners decided to retire and Georgina Fraser and I – who’ve both worked for Jeffreys for many years – took over.

Lothian. All 64 rooms of this vast stately home were tired and in need of restoration and development to make them suitable for a young, 21st-century family. The project took more than four years to complete, but the reward of seeing our clients so happy in their home has been worth all the hard work. What motivates and inspires you? Our team gather inspiration from everywhere – we have a group chat which is constantly pinging with shared information, be it details we’ve seen on our travels, snips from fashion magazines, cool Instagram posts, or work completed by our suppliers.

What’s exclusive to the company? We’re very lucky to have a retail showroom where customers and design clients can come in to see the style and quality of the products we offer. The showroom is open Tuesday to Saturday and everyone, including four-legged friends, is welcome.

Give us your top tips for a successful project 1. Employ your interior designer early in the process. Having them on a project team with your appointed architects and developers is worth its weight in gold. 2. Have a realistic budget. If you’re unsure of what to allocate, your designer will be able to help you work this out. 3. Invest in key pieces like sofas, beds, flooring, window dressings etc and have a “buy well, buy once” mentality. The sting of bad quality lasts longer than the thrill of a deal, so buy for longevity, not for a cheaper price that you’d have to replace far sooner. 4. Delays in decision-making can be costly! So discuss things with your partner or household in advance, ensure you’re on the same page regarding the overall look, and make an agreement over who gets final choice. 5. Try to have fun – it should be an enjoyable process!

What has been your biggest challenge? Our biggest design challenge to date has been our work with the renovation of Yester House in East

Good design is… Beautiful, functional and unashamedly suited for YOU and your lifestyle.

What is Jeffreys’ signature style? While we don’t have a ‘house style’, you can always recognise a Jeffreys home by its quirky details – we tend to play with colour, scale and proportion, and often end up with an animal design somewhere in the scheme! BUSINESS PROFILE

Tell us about Mary Leslie Interior Design Mary Leslie, director: We cover the full range of interior design services and are well known for clever and creative use of space, including kitchens, bathrooms, studies and dressing rooms. We are accustomed to working for time-poor and absent clients, especially when designing holiday homes, rentals and turnkey projects. What should potential clients know about you? I was recently commissioned by RIBA to write a book called Squeezing It In: Designing for Compact Spaces. In it, I give solutions that can be applied to a variety of settings in the home, compact or otherwise. What sort of questions should clients be asking? How do you see yourself helping us with this project? Have you done similar work before? What else can we do that might be an improvement on my original ideas? Will I need other specialists on the design team, and if so, who do you recommend? Can you give me a ballpark cost for everything we have discussed? How long do you think it will take? What is your signature style? We prefer to interpret our clients’ taste rather than impose our own house style. Flexibility is key, and each project is unique to the client. We seek to produce interiors that show depth, character and inspiration. No matter the location, size or complexity of the project, they all receive the same attention to detail. We believe in imaginative use of colour, texture and finish, classical proportion, simplicity and, above all, comfort. What’s exclusive to the company? I have more than 40 years’ experience to draw on and can combine the new and the innovative with traditional crafts and trades. My ability to

see the potential of a property and use it to the client’s best advantage is key. I have a talent for understanding my clients’ lifestyle, listening to their needs and being able to provide a clever, creative, aesthetically pleasing and practical home for them. What motivates and inspires you? I find inspiration all around me. Travel is great for new finishes, colours and shapes, as is being in nature. When writing my book, I came across all manner of clever ideas which spurred me on to different ways of thinking. What are the key considerations on a project? Trust your designer, be honest about your brief and budget, enjoy yourself and remember that we are all on the same side – you, the design team, the plumber, electrician, upholsterer and seamstress. We all want you to have the best possible result from everyone’s skills and endeavours. Give us your top tips for a successful project 1. Commission a scale drawing of the property and plot furniture and power points onto it. 2. Be methodical. Draw up lists of things you do and don’t like, lists of the alterations you need, lists of the trades you need to employ, lists of furniture, furnishings, fittings, lighting and accessories, a decorating schedule… 3. Look at your fabrics and paint colours in different weather conditions and at different times of day. They do change with the light. 4. Keep your sense of humour, especially when it comes to timescale and price. 5. Employ a designer so they can do all of this for you, then you can relax and enjoy the process. Good design is… Solving the brief in unexpected ways, sympathetic, aesthetically pleasing and practical.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Tell us about Robertson Lindsay Sally Homan, founder and design director: Robertson Lindsay is an Edinburgh based Interior Design Studio. We create stunning bespoke interiors for private clients. We only run three or four projects simultaneously, so that we can devote time to each one. We ask about your needs, we listen to your likes and dislikes and we endeavour to create a home that is perfectly suited to you. We pride ourselves on providing an impeccable standard of service to our clients. As well as being creative, we are extremely organised and used to running big projects. We have an incredible team of talented people who really care about what we do. What should potential clients know about you? We draw all our room designs in 3D so you can see how different layouts work – it’s much easier to view than a flat plan. We work closely with our clients, looking at lots of images, styles and fabrics. There are discussions and presentations before the client commits to anything, so they are confident of the design. A lot of our work is repeat business, so we already know their tastes quite well. Any key questions a customer should be asking? Ask to see images of projects and speak to previous clients. It is important you find a qualified designer who takes time to understand you. Success happens when the designer is professional, experienced and really listens to the client.

We can design bespoke pieces. We love working with our trusted suppliers on each project and employ Scottish makers whenever we can. What has been your biggest challenge? We were commissioned to design and install six luxury bedrooms in a French chateau in just ten weeks. In all, more than 100 items, including bespoke furniture, were shipped to France. My flight was cancelled because of snow so I had to find a way to get to Bordeaux in time to meet the lorry. But it was all completed on time and looked fantastic. What motivates and inspires you? Travel and the natural world provide endless inspiration. Our suppliers constantly show us new finishes and techniques that we incorporate into our designs. We also get inspiration from the architecture of each client’s own style and home. What are the key considerations on a project? Always start by looking at the space as it is. Think about each room’s intended function and how it relates to other rooms. What are the main focal points of the room, where is the main light source and how will traffic flow through it? What jars? What are the problems? We can help solve them.

What is Robertson Lindsay’s signature style? Contemporary classic. We design interiors that will stand the test of time and be relevant ten years from now. We don’t impose our tastes, though; every project is unique and personalised. We spend a lot of time with our clients getting to know them and helping them to express their own style.

Give us your top tips for a successful project 1. Be brave. Put your personality into your home. 2. Plan an overall look for your home at the start of the project. 3. Use an experienced professional to help achieve your dreams and avoid mistakes. 4. Use lighting to create atmosphere at different times of day. Don’t settle for rows of downlights. 5. Keep a spreadsheet of all the costs so you’re on top of the project (or we can do that for you).

What’s exclusive to the company? A lot of Scottish homes have large rooms with high ceilings, and standard furniture doesn’t suit them.

Good design is… Function, harmony and detail elevates a good design to fantastic.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Tell us about Russwood Fiona Finnie, marketing manager: Russwood is a leading supplier of high-quality timber products, including flooring, decking and interior and exterior cladding. We pride ourselves on our reputation for supplying quality products and providing excellent technical expertise. All Russwood timber is FSC or PEFC, meaning that it is certified as sustainably sourced from well-managed forests. What should potential clients know about you? Russwood celebrated three decades in the timber industry last year. Our first sawmill was run by a team of six. Today, we employ over 50 staff at our Newtonmore HQ and Glasgow office. Throughout those 30 years, our commitment to quality and technical expertise has allowed us to provide timber and fixing systems that last for generations. Any key questions a customer should be asking? How timber is fixed is fundamental to both appearance and longevity, so be sure to ask our experts for advice on the optimal fixings system for your project. Budget and lead times are also important to establish early on. What is Russwood’s signature style? Wood is highly versatile. Internally, timber flooring adds warmth and character, while cladding is a simple and effective way to transform the aesthetic of a room. Externally, cladding and decking offer a sustainable, durable and attractive way to enhance the look of your home. Leave the wood to weather naturally, paint it the colour of your choice, or coat with SiOO:X for a uniform weathered appearance. What has been your biggest challenge? Creating our own purpose-built office suite at our sawmill complex beside Newtonmore train station. Our architect came up with a linear design that complements the rail track, and a layered, stratified shape echoes the Glen Feshie hills and Cairngorms beyond. Our new office is a real-life case study of the many ways in which timber can enhance a

building and perfectly showcases the practicality and beauty of Russwood timber. What’s exclusive to the company? We are continually innovating and testing new products at our in-house research and development centre, so many of our products are exclusive and unique to us. The virtual tools on our website allow you to browse our range, view 3D samples or try our flooring visualiser to bring your ideas to life. Alternatively, come and visit our flooring showroom and cladding display area in Newtonmore. What motivates and inspires you? We have worked on some fantastic projects with architects, designers and homeowners throughout of the UK. The innovative ways in which our timber is used both inside and out never fail to inspire us. The ‘Inspiration’ section on our website is a chance to see what’s possible and to inspire you. What are the key considerations on a project? Set a realistic budget and keep track of spending. Always allow for wastage, since having to order extra materials can delay a project significantly. Give us your top tips for a successful project 1. Gather inspiration from a variety of sources before you begin. Our website and Instagram are great places to start. 2. If you require a quick turnaround, consider our stock ranges as these generally carry shorter lead times than customisable products. 3. Think about the practicalities. Do you need to consider children or pets? What about building regulations? Is it a space for working or living? 4. Aim to select sustainable, renewable and recyclable materials wherever possible. 5. Go to the experts for advice. Our team are happy to advise you every step of the way. Good design is… Timeless yet innovative, personal and functional, beautiful and sustainable.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Tell us about White Boar Interiors Amanda Jane Tervit, director of interior design: White Boar Interiors has no boundaries when it comes to design, so we can deliver everything from unique hand-made skirtings and facings to one-off pieces of furniture or lighting. We have a collection of skilled, imaginative craftspeople who are able to make our clients’ dreams come true. What should potential clients know about you? We’re a family business and care deeply about all our projects, striving for perfection every time. We take a holistic approach, managing each project from inception to completion, reassuring our clients that everything is being taken care of. We have a strong network of tradespeople and can deliver every aspect of a project’s requirements, including architectural design and approvals. What sort of questions should they be asking? Do you have a rapport with the designer? Do you find it easy to be in their company? Do you feel heard and understood? You also need to work out if they’ll be able to deliver your ideas, so ask questions like ‘Can you do architectural approvals’ or ‘Is bespoke cabinetry something you provide’. Describe White Boar’s signature style We want our designs to be true to you. You are unique and we want to bring that out using our extensive experience and creative licence. What’s exclusive to the company? We are all about positive solutions. We can cover all architectural requirements in-house, we have strong relationships with a variety of manufacturing workshops, our installation team is second to none and we use local businesses wherever possible. Moreover, each design is completely exclusive to the client, and this comes from a culture of listening, seeing and understanding the vision.

What has been your biggest challenge so far? This is always related to A-listed buildings – what can and can’t be done, and what is actually suitable for the building. We have a responsibility to protect our heritage. We’ll manage the client’s expectations and work closely with the conservation planning officer to overcome any hurdles. What motivates and inspires you? Nature: the seasonal colours, textures and landscapes we’re lucky enough to have around us every day. And people: our main inspiration comes from our clients. They’re at the heart of each design. What are the key considerations on a project? We implore our clients to be themselves and not hold back. We want to highlight you. Our team are open-minded and welcoming at every level and we will do everything in our power to show you in your interiors. So be brave and let us work our magic. Give us your top tips for a successful project 1. Know your building. Is it listed? Does it have original features? This may help your design. 2. Invite established trades to check the plumbing, wiring, boiler and other services. It’s better to get any upgrading out the way before you decorate. 3. Think about layout changes early on. Ask yourself how each space might work if it were knocked through into its neighbour, and so on. 4. Will new furniture crowd your space? Make a simple scaled floor layout plan with cutouts the size of the pieces you’re interested in. This will help you choose furniture that will fit the room. 5. Think about natural light. What does the space look like at different times of the day. Then add artificial light to suit your needs – low and moody or bright and airy. Good design is… Understanding, practical and then beautiful.

C R E AT I N G T H E P E R F E C T H O M E T H R O U G H BOCONCEPT INTERIOR DESIGN BoConcept Scotland have recently completed a staging in South Lanarkshire. Their designers are here to share their notes and tips for making the most of your space.

DESIGNER’S NOTES This property was formerly a church, then a museum before being subdivided into private residences. With such a grand space with original features, we chose key pieces that complement the space, rather than the furniture stealing the limelight. We want to make sure the space feels versatile and enticing, so we chose neutral fabrics and pieces that have a classic style to them.

For accessories, we chose a textured hide rug to tie the living space into the rest of the room, giving visual interest to the herringbone flooring. It’s a subtle way to add visual intrigue and draw your eye to features in the space you want to bring attention to.

We had multi-level ceilings to work with, as the space has a mezzanine level. We wanted to exaggerate the ultra-high ceiling in the living area so chose relatively low, streamlined furniture. This grounds the room and adds a sense of comfort to a large space, coming through the chunkier, more comforting Cenova sofa.

This project was carried out by BoConcept using their complimentary Interior Design Service. From a small update to a full redesign, BoConcept help their clients create their dream home using their collection of fully customisable Danish furniture.
