The Science of Shopping Meets the Information Age

Thursday

Sponsored by:

Retail has historically reflected both the social change in our species and the evolutionary progress of our culture. In the past 150 years we have seen two major forces impacting retail. First was industrialization. With goods no longer hand crafted, the relative price of everyday goods dropped. The second transformation was the mechanization of the production of food. Labor costs and labor needs were reduced and the migration from countryside began. That population shift fostered the rise of the grocery store and the shopping mall. Today we are facing another societal transformation — the communication revolution. Television, the Internet and mobile phones have transformed our lives. In emerging markets, having a mobile phone number is more important than having a name. Our access to goods and services will never be the same. Paco Underhill is a renowned authority on shopping behavior. He has spent more than 25 years conducting research that helps companies understand what motivates today’s consumers and about how consumer behavior is ruled by factors such as gender, “trial and touch” and human anatomy. In this lively Keynote Session he will walk you through a wide variety of spaces from a consumer perspective, filling in the missing pieces between the drawing board and execution. The mall meets the street, meets the store, meets the product, meets the operating culture, meets online, meets the mobile phone, meets the digital sign.

[

Paco Underhill, Founder and Managing Director, Envirosell Paco Underhill runs Envirosell, the world’s principal testing agency for prototype stores, bank branches and restaurants. His books, Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping and Call of the Mall: The Geography of Shopping are out in 27 languages. From his work with Wal-Mart and McDonald’s to Simon Properties and Verizon Wireless, he has a wealth of experience. He’s going to talk about retail, about shopping malls and why Maslow’s hierarchy of needs should include communication and what digital signage’s role is in that process. He’s funny, informed and, we are told, mostly on target.

BONUS!

]

The first 100 to sign up for this Keynote Session will receive a FREE copy of the recently rereleased and updated Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping at the Paco Underhill book signing at the Digital Signage Expo exhibit on the show floor.
