President’s Report “There have been some areas of our standard that have been open to various interpretations by judges and breeders, we hope to close some of those gaps."

~ Angel LeSage

I cannot believe it as been another grueling winter. Even where I live, in the foothills of northern California, we had snow; this only happens every 5 or 6 years. The groundhog did not see his shadow, as the legend goes, so winter must be coming to an end. With that in mind, I hope you have started planning to attend Nationals. It is coming up soon, April 27 in Alexandria, Louisiana. I don’t recall ever having a National show in this part of the country. So, take advantage of a great location, outstanding food, and a fun place to visit. I think we have a strong Standards Committee, with members having a great deal of knowledge and experience in Jersey Woolies. There is a blend of skills on the committee with diverse ideas and opinions. The committee is doing a great job. Their job is to review the Jersey Wooly standard, line by line, making changes where needed, to improve and clarify the written descriptions. As you know, being able to write what you mean can be challenging. There have been some areas of our standard that have been open to various interpretations by judges and breeders, we hope to close some of those gaps. In April - May 2019 there will be a special election for membership to vote on the NJWRC Standard Committee’s recommendations for changes. After the vote, the changes

T h e

F l u f f

approved will be submitted to the ARBA Standards Committee. They will review and make the final approval or send back for us to make adjustments. Sometimes the ARBA Standards Committee does not agree with the changes clubs make, and at that point we begin negotiating with them on why we wanted a certain wording. Once the ARBA Standards Committee has a 2/3 agreement on the wording changes, the new Jersey Wooly standard will be submitted to the ARBA Board of Directors for the final approval. The changes will then be published in the Standard of Perfection 2021 and will go into effect January 1, 2021. I want to remind you that all sanctions must be requested before a show starts, and preferably well before a show. Be sure to contact Nicole Schmitt, Sweepstakes secretary, if you need to purchase a sanction. Applications are located on www. NJWRC.org/forms/sancReqForm. pdf or www.njwrcsweeps.com sites. The policy for show sanctions is posted on the NJWRC.org website. One of the key instructions for sanctioning specifically states that there is no sanctioning of a shows after the show has occurred. These guidelines were set up by the NJWRC many years ago. If you need a lastminute sanction give Nicole a heads up via email telling her you want to sanction a show (include the show ARBA numbers and show secretary information). Once she gets the ap-

Vice President’s Report “Be courteous, be kind, and have fun, and that will keep you well in line with ARBA Show Rule, section 45." ~Cheryl Loesch

Cheryl Loesch momdeplume@comcast.net

You’ve heard it before, I’m sure: Exhibitors must not identify their animals to the judge. Where did this rule come from? Is it a real rule? What does it mean? Why is it important to our sport? In short, the rule is an extrapolation from the ARBA Show Rules, Section 45, under Exhibitor Conduct: SECTION 45. Exhibitors or guardians of exhibitors attempting to, or actually interfering with, annoying, molesting, or influencing the judge or judges, or acting in a manner unbecoming an exhibitor(s) shall have all their stock disqualified by the judge and shall be ejected by the show superintendent and barred from the show room. Suspension or expulsion of ARBA membership may result from said acts, if so deemed by the ARBA Board of Directors.

Where in there does it say “Exhibitors must not identify their animals to the judge?” It’s hard to see it right away, because Section 45 is a very broad rule saying that exhibitors face penalties if they interfere with judges or judging in any way. Identifying your animals to the judge comes under attempting to influence the judge. Generally, it means that exhibitors are not to identify their animals in an obvious way, by pointing or nodding or telling the judge which animals on the table they own. This is seen as attempting to influence

6

judging. And yet, we’ve all seen it. Excited exhibitors will tell everyone within earshot all of their rabbits’ recent accomplishments—this is particularly prevalent at the youth tables, but certainly not exclusive to youth. An exhibitor will ask which rabbit is yours. An exhibitor points out to the judge which rabbit they like the best in the class, and why. There are many ways people identify their rabbits to the judges. They can do any of the above, or they can find more subtle ways to identify their rabbits. In general, most people who do these things are not attempting to influence the outcome of the show; they are simply new, excited, or not intending to identify their animal. It is, however, a practice that can be seen as trying to rig the game, and as good sports, we should all do our best to avoid it. Of course, we all place and pick up our own animals from the table, talk to each other, help the comment-taker when needed, and all of these things can inadvertently identify our animals to the judge. There are times when even the show equipment makes it more likely that animals will be identified. If the show coops don’t open on both sides, forcing the obvious placement of all animals by owners, or if the coops are short and lack any type of enclosing mesh, exhibitors may be forced to hover to keep animals from interacting. Hello District 1! Hopefully everyone has had a safe and uneventful winter and each of you has the beginnings of a fruitful Spring. One of the most common things I hear from breeders, when Spring rolls around is, "Spring Cleaning." What does this entail? Here at Wild Meadows, it is usually a complete breakdown of the inside of the barn. Every cage gets pulled out, scrubbed down, sprayed with ammonia, and the bottom wire gets re-galvanized. All nest boxes, water bottles, crocks, feeders and resting mats get scrubbed and disinfected. The inside of the barn gets pressure washed and the floor

(ours is wooden) gets new sealant put down. This whole process usually happens over the course of a week. It is a long process but a necessary one for the longevity of the equipment and the health of the herd. I don't have much else to write at this time. If you are in District 1, and have any wins, please forward them on to me at wildmeadows@hotmail.com. Hope your boxes are full with the next generation of winners! Meadow

Things have been running much smoother the last few years. We have great district directors and officers. We are lucky to have such a smooth-running club. See you at Nationals. Angel 7

Hello fellow Jersey Wooly lovers! Sorry about not being able to get an article in for the last Fluff. I have been very busy planning a wedding! Since I didn’t get my last article in, I'd like to recap on convention in MA. Thanks to all who came and were able to make the show a success! I for one was very tired running rabbits, ramrodding, and writing for the judges. But, I would not change it for the world. It's one of my favorite parts of convention and so rewarding in my eyes! If you haven’t, please volunteer any chance you may get. Many hands make light work! Congratulations again to our winners

in both open and youth! I was fortunate enough to take home BOSG Agouti and Broken. It has been a cold and very snowy winter here in Wisconsin, resulting in no live babies. I am looking forward to spring and seeing more babies hit the nest box. I will not be attending Nationals because of the wedding budget, but I'm looking forward to hearing results and seeing pictures of many wooly enthusiasts mingling and having a good time! Till the next issue, Haley

TidBits. . .

Here in Central Texas the weather has been insane. One day it got up to 88 and the next day the high was 32 and sleeting and snowing. Not only is this crazy weather hard on us humans, it’s terrible for our rabbits. They don’t know if it’s time to molt or not and most of the time I end up with rabbits with crazy patchy, uneven coats. And this is the middle of show season when I really need the coats to look good! Oh well. That’s the price you pay for trying to raise Jersey Woolies in Texas.

I know everyone is getting ready for Jersey Wooly Nationals!! I’m so excited because I actually get to go for the first time in 3 years. I plan on volunteering as much as possible, and I hope you will too. Volunteering is the only thing that will help a show run smoothly for everyone and give everyone a chance to enjoy the show. Short article this time, but hopefully there will be lots to talk about in the artical after Nationals. Good luck and safe travels fellow breeders!! I can’t wait to see everyone!!!! Kendra

Hello Everyone! Boy, have we had a hard winter here in the Midwest. It has definitely been the coldest I can remember. Those couple of days we had here from the Polar Vortex were just brutal and made doing bunny chores extra tough. I’m so glad it's over; I'm sure the bunnies are glad it's over too. Not every breeder has their bunnies inside their house or a heated area like a garage or heated shed. That can make breeding in the wintertime a bit challenging. I have my bunnies in an unheated shed, as well as a few in hutches outside and yes breeding in the winter can be tough. If you're like me, and your rabbitry is outside or in an unheated barn, there are a few things you can do to help insure live litters. Most of the time, I have found that does really don't want to breed in the winter and many of them won't take at this time of year. I will breed several does and hope that maybe half will take. With winter breedings, I like to bring inside those does that are not proven, and those I know don't usually make a great nest. Once the babies are a few weeks old and have some wool, I will move them back out to the shed. I know some breeders will bring the doe into the house to have the babies then move the doe back outside once she's had them. They take the babies to the mom to nurse a couple times a day until they have some wool on them and can stay outside.

10

Now if you don't have the option of bringing the does inside to kindle, then you want to make sure you give her plenty of nesting material to help her make the best nest she can. I had several does due recently but did not bring all of them inside. The does I know are good moms I left in the shed, and even left one outside in a hutch to have babies. The one in the shed I gave an enclosed wooden nest box. That's a nest box with just a small opening in the front for the doe to get in and out of. The does love these boxes. I put in lots of shavings as well as a shredded paper bedding called Care Fresh (available at pet stores). I love this stuff. It helps to keep the litter nice and warm. I also give lots of fresh hay, spread around the cage for the doe to gather and make her nest with. You can also offer straw, and if you have newspapers laying around the house you can tear those up into long strips for the doe to use. Make sure you check on the doe several times a day when she’s due just to make sure she's made a nice nest and has pulled plenty of wool. You also want to check for any babies that might have crawled away from the nest and need to be put back in before they get too cold. A good, smart doe knows that it's cold out and knows that she needs to make an extra warm nest for her babies. The doe I left outside in a hutch made the best nest I've ever seen. She's in a hutch with a huge box attached. I gave her tons of shavings Continued on page 11

Best of Luck at Nationals 2019!

It has been a wild winter so far. There have been dangerous record breaking low temps in the North and Northeast. The South has experienced all the seasons in a day’s time. I do hope that everyone has managed to hold on to their National babies and keep them warm and snug.

for all the information. I had an opportunity to attend the Grand Finals in Lawrenceburg, TN this past December 2018. We had a good turnout of woolies. I would like to congratulate Brenda Kneir and Joy Deckard for their interchangeable wins of BOB and BOS.

Spring is right around the corner and so is Jersey Wooly Nationals. I invite all to come to my home state of Louisiana and enjoy a good show on Saturday, April 27, 2019. You will be able to show five times, if you so desire. Nationals is being held in conjunction with the Central Louisiana Rabbit Breeder’s Association Spring Fling show. Nationals will be held Saturday and there is a double all breed show that same day. Sunday will be a Wooly specialty and an all-breed show. The facility is the Alexandria Mega Evacuation Center. It is huge and there is plenty of room, no crowding, and you can sit and enjoy a day at the show. Please visit 2019 NJWRC Nationals on Facebook, or see the information published in this edition of the Fluff

Now, to move into the electronic age. The Fluff is now in electronic form. I was able to pull up the magazine and view it easily. I know some love the hard copies for sentimental reasons; however, the money saved on printing and mailing cost will be used to enhance awards, etc. for the members of the club. I ask for our members to please give it a chance. In closing, as always, please email or Facebook message me with those wins. Tracey Freeman ARBA Judge #980 Jersey Wooly Specialty

Winter has been good to us so far, with a bit of a cold snap here and there, but things are looking good. Winter usually brings nice full prime coats and at this time of winter shows are starting to kick back up and we're all looking for something fun to do during the cold bitter time of year. Speaking of shows, Jersey Wooly Nationals will be held in Alexandria, Louisiana on April 27th, 2019. Nationals, like any other big show, is a great opportunity to meet different breeders and exchange stock you wouldn't normally be able to attain. I hope those ambitious enough to attend have a great time and I'd like to wish good luck to all who are exhibiting! If you're like me and are wishing nationals was a tad bit closer to home, you're in luck! In 2020 the Northeast Jersey Wooly Breeders will be hosting Jersey Wooly Nationals in Syracuse, New York. T h e

F l u f f

At a recent show the topic of “to better the breed” came up. What does this mean to you? Each rabbit breed has specific traits. These traits can be physical and temperamental aspects. Each breed has a written Standard of Perfection. A standard is a description of the ideal specimen of the breed. The Standard describes aspects that should be present in the breed: those traits that were selected for during the creation of the breed. Think of the standard as the blueprint we can refer to when “building” the best rabbits. As breeders, we are breeding to try to achieve that ideal specimen described in the Standard. With the ideal specimen firmly established in the breeder’s mind, we then work towards producing Jersey Woolies that most closely resemble the Standard. I think we can all agree there is no such things as the “perfect rabbit,” but it should be our goal as ethical breeders to try to get as close to perfection as possible. We, as breeders should be improving generation after generation to try to reach the ideal set out in the Standard. This is what is meant by “bettering the breed.” I like to take the Standard and break it down into equal parts. Head, eyes and ears are equal to 28 points. The body is worth 30 points, and Wool is worth a total of 27 points. So, I look at it in thirds.

14

Head 16 Ears 10 Eyes 2

Body 30

Wool Texture 14 Density 8 Length 5

Color is 10 points and Condition is 5 points for a total of 100 points. Let’s discuss the first third, the head, ears, and eyes. Let’s face it, the head is usually the first thing the judge sees in the show coop. I don’t know where the term “Mug Head” originated, but it does describe well what we are trying to achieve. Our standard says the head shall be set high and close to the shoulders. The head shall be wide and short, beginning at the base of the ears and carrying between the eyes to a well filled muzzle. The head shall be in balance with the body. When viewed from the side, the head shall appear short and bold, rounding from the ears and brow to the plane between the eyes and nose, then rounding at the muzzle and jowl. The head is to have “side trimmings,” consisting of longer fur fibers along the jawline, which blend smoothly into the body wool. It is to have a “wool cap” of short, dense wool from the ear base forward. The faults for the head are a long or narrow head, “snippy” or a pinched muzzle. Lacking a wool cap or side trimmings is also a fault. Ears are to be short, well furred and of good substance. They are to be Continued on page 15

Hello to all the members of the NJWRC. I hope this article finds you all doing well. We have just made it through the polar vortex hitting our area of the Midwest. -50 to -60 degrees with windchill! I am glad to say that all fared well here and I hope the same for all of my fellow breeders. We are currently going into a new stage for our club, going to all e-magazines from here on out. Our first trial run ran into a few problems, which with the help of all people involved, were easily resolved. With the high cost of magazine printing and mailing, this was a vital step to keep our club afloat. We ask that everyone please bear with us as this is still a learning curve for all involved and your understanding would be greatly appreciated. I have been seeing a fairly large group of new members joining, which really is awesome to see! Whereas our membership seems to be doing ok and we seem to be getting a fair amount of new mem-

berships, we always welcome more. Feel free to promote our club to anyone who may be interested in this awesome breed. Our renewal reminders are being sent via email so it is of great importance that you please check with me to make sure that all the information that I have on file is current. I can only work with the information that I have on file, and I am only as good as that information allows. Please, if you feel anything may be different check with me. We have a very active group of people in this club and, from my experience, this club has some of the nicest people in all of the rabbit world. Youth are the foundation of any breed so if you know of a responsible youth feel free to promote this breed. Without youth our club will go the way of all other antiquated things in this world. recognized varieties. If eyes are different from what is called for, it is a disqualification. My take away from this, as we all can interpret it differently, is that we want a head that balances with the body and the ears need to balance size wise with head and body. Ears should have substance and be well furred, have rounded shape and carried erect not necessarily touching but straight. The width of head should be the same 15

from eyes through the muzzle. There should be a curvature from the base of the ears to the eyes. From the eyes down should be flat, like hitting a brick wall, thus, creating the “Mug Head.” The eyes should be bold, bright and of the correct color. In the next Fluff, we will discuss the body. May your nest boxes be full, and your barns healthy. See you on the tables. Julie Aversa District 8 W i n t e r

EDITORIAL: ARBA SOP BROKEN STANDARDS

THOUGHTS ON THE PROPOSED SOP CHANGES TO THE BROKEN PATTERN BY MICHAELINE MCCONNELL

Editor's Note: We are re-printing this article in its original form, with edits only for grammar purposes. It was first printed in the Fall 2018 edition of the Fluff, with some editorial additions.

I

n the Summer 2018 edition of the NJWRC “The Fluff” magazine, a letter from the ARBA Standards Committee was published. It was introducing a proposal to all breed clubs that have the broken pattern as a group/variety, to standardize the wording for broken patterns in the upcoming Standard of Perfection. This would apply to all 12 breeds that have the broken variety in their Standards.

the broken pattern will be described, and whether the actual description will remain breed specific or standardized as well. That is an unknown. Assuming that the actual broken description will remain breed specific, and the only change will be to remove percentages in that description or in the disqualification, I can see this will make it easier for judges to judge the broken pattern. They will not spend much time guessing and expounding upon percentages. But the proposed overall wording is vague, and the use of the word “intent” is improper because that is a description of a mental state.

Actual wording was not subDespite what the letter from the mitted, but a more generalized ARBA Standards Committee said, statement: “The new description that they are doing this to reduce for the Broken in the Standard of “subjectivity,” subjectivity rePerfection (SOP) would remove mains due to judges’ interpretaany percentage from the stantion of what is too heavy or too dard. WEST SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSSETTS: JERSEY WOOLY

YOUTH BEST OF BREED

MORGAN WALKER & ALLSTAR'S SQ5 My adventures with Suzie have been a whirlwind. I have been very lucky to have been able to achieve multiple BOB, BOSB and even RIS with her over the past year. She also earned the honor of being the #2 Jersey Wooly of the year. I know she is not a homegrown but she is very special to me. I have worked with her and she has always given me 110%. She has been a vital part of my 4-H and FFA projects as she has been a willing participant in many demonstrations. She has been an awesome asset to my rabbitry. Suzie will be put back into the breeding program in hopes of producing some more awesome bunnies!

Hello, my name is Morgan Walker and I am from District 8. I am the proud owner of Allstar’s SQ5, known as SuzieQ, who was the youth Best of Breed winner at the 2018 ARBA convention. I have been raising rabbits for almost 6 years now. I have worked with my mentors, Julie and Lindsay Aversa from the start. They have been a big part of why I love this hobby and where I have gotten today. I was lucky enough to purchase Suzie-Q from the Aversas at 2017 Wooly Nationals. I had not gotten to see her before the show as we had just recently moved to Kentucky from Michigan and had not seen them for a bit. When I saw her, I knew I had to have her. It was a purchase outside of my usual choices, as she carries shaded which is a color group that I am not currently working on. But I took my chances and brought her home. I am so glad that I did as she has been a blessing! T h e

F l u f f

The 2017 ARBA convention was my first Convention show ever. I felt so lucky when my rabbit, George, was awarded BOSG Agouti. I was so excited and in awe that my first time out that my rabbit was awarded at that level! I never imagined that the very next year, I would be here with the 2018 BOB winner. It is such an honor to call Suzie-Q mine, and I am VERY thankful to the Aversas for allowing me to add her to my herd. With their breeding and my hard work in caring for her, she was able to shine that day and I could not be happier.

WEST SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSSETTS: JERSEY WOOLY

YOUTH BEST OPPOSITE OF BREED

CODY LANDIS & AFB'S XANDER

Morgan on her BOB win with her stunning Broken Sr Doe! AFB’s Xander is the product of 2 of Ashley and Cody’s award-winning lines. His sire is AFB’s Tank (AF317 broken blue SR Buck) who has 14 legs which include a BIS and RIS. Tank goes back to Ashley’s seal buck AFB’s Reno (Youth BOB 2014 ARBA Convention in Fort Worth, Youth BOSB 2016 JW Nationals in PA, Youth BOG Shaded 2017 JW Nationals in WI) and her broken blue buck AFB’s Zeke (RIS and 2nd RIS). His dam is AFB’s Layla (black SR doe) who was Youth BOSG Self at the 2017 ARBA Convention in Indianapolis.

What a huge surprise and honor to have AFB’s Xander (AF343 - Black SR Buck) chosen as this year’s Youth BOSB at the ARBA Convention in West Springfield, MA. There were so many gorgeous woolies shown in Youth. Congratulations to all of the youth for all of their hard work and dedication to the Jersey Wooly breed. AFB’s Xander was a beautiful baby who went through a very long, super ugly stage. We almost culled him a few times, but thank goodness we changed our minds after looking at his baby pics and feeling his body each time. We decided to put him in a bottom grow-out hole and just ignore him for a while. Once he finally started coming out of his uglies, we were very excited as he just kept getting better and better. We were really happy when ARBA came around and he was in coat and in his prime. Our excitement only grew when he won Youth BOG Self and then when Judge Susie Dapper pulled him out multiple times during the Youth BOB judging. Congrats to T h e

Hello NJWRC Members! Going to keep this article short for the most part – but we’ve had a lot of new members coming to join us (AWESOME!), so some quick review points, which also serve as good reminders to even long-time members! • Showing as a partnership/group: In order to receive points, all exhibitors on the entry must be members in good standing with the NJWRC. I’ve seen a couple of these lately, and it makes me sad to not be able to count your points because one or more of the entry names aren’t members. • Sanctioned shows: I’m starting to again receive some late sanction requests. The NJWRC rule is that the request must be postmarked prior to the show date. You need to check the sanctioned shows listing on the sweepstakes website before any show/s you’re planning to attend to be sure I’ve received and processed the sanction. You can’t just trust it on a show catalog. Double-check it! Requests will not be honored that do not fall within the guidelines.

ies when a report is approximately 10 days late. Sometimes this works, sometimes not. Late reports will appear on the sanctioned show listing in red bold, and once the show secretary has been contacted, the date and manner in which I contacted will also be reflected. The 10-day date for notification is also on the listing; it’s very easy to navigate. • Points: Each points report that you see in your Fluff is also posted on the sweepstakes website, and will always be accompanied by the full listing of included shows. The website has all placements, sorted both by Rank and by Exhibitor. You should seriously check it out! Still on Points: If you have a question about points, who should you ask? That’d be me! Your fastest and most accurate answer will come in asking the person that does all this, I promise! And when you contact me, you can be sure the first question I’ll likely ask is, “Did you check the included shows listing?”

Due to my Real Job, I’ve continued to struggle in getting everything caught • Late reports: The late report situ- up again – but I can assure you, I’m ation is far improved at this time, but THIS close (put your fingers in front you should still watch the sanctioned of your face, thumb and index finger shows listing for reports having been about a half inch apart from one anreceived by me. The listing is a real- other!). Sanctions are being issued in time document that reflects when a timely manner, bank runs are being the report is/was due, whether it’s made – only the other aspects have been received, where in the process been a bit of a struggle. I’d love to quit it is once received – and it if it hasn’t my Real Job and just do sanctions and been received! I email show secretar- points however, I can’t find a Report continued on p 41

Sweepstakes Report continued from p 34

National Specialty Club that will offer health insurance!

Success in the Nest Box

As always, contact me directly with any questions/concerns/ feedback. If you use the “Contact Us” link/s on the sweeps website, please, please, PLEASE watch your spam folder for the reply coming from njwrcsweeps@gmail.com. It seems more common for them to land in spam when emailing directly from the site. The sweeps website is: www. njwrcsweeps.com. You’ll also find the full sweepstakes rules there, as well as Sweeps for Dummies where it’s explained in regular English rather than stereo instructions. Until next time! -Nicole T h e

During the polar vortex in January, Gayle Beirau's doe's instincts took over and successfully made a nice nestbox for her kits. How do you handle the weather changes and planned litters?
