Resources Using the range of practice tests that we have available onscreen you can ensure that your learners are prepared and confident when they sit their tests. Practice tests can be accessed through our website www. edexcel.com/ALANInternational and are available on our free practice test CD ROMs.

We also publish a number of Student Skills Books and Teacher Handbooks for both ALAN Literacy and Numeracy. Our Student Skills Books have been written specifically to support students and teachers. The skills books are ideal for self-study or for whole class teaching. They are made up of highly motivating units that build confidence in the key Literacy and Numeracy skills. The photo-copiable Teacher’s Handbook provides practical help and support for implementing ALAN. What is ALAN?

Attainment Points for ALAN

Hugely successful in UK schools, ALAN qualifications have been designed to test students’ functional ability in literacy and numeracy, and help young adults build solid skills for the future.

Learners who attain a Literacy and Numeracy qualification at Level 2 will achieve the points equivalent to one GCSE, helping them with applications to college, work and further education. These points are in addition to those achieved for GCSE English and mathematics.

ALAN qualifications: • Enable students to build solid skills in literacy and numeracy that will help them in their study of other subjects - or in the preparation for Level 2 qualifications. • Are equivalent to an International GCSE in terms of UK SCAAT points. • Enable gifted and talented Year 9 students to achieve a recognised qualification ahead of their International GCSEs. • Increase student motivation - with immediate feedback provided on results and performance. • Feature on-screen and on-demand tests - allowing students to take the test when they’re ready.

Assessment and Onscreen Testing ALAN tests are onscreen and on-demand at Level 1 and Level 2. All tests follow the same assessment design whereby each qualification is a single, onscreen test.

Qualification Structure Each ALAN qualification is broken up into the components below. Students can enter at a level that best meets their learning and development needs, and because ALAN is on-demand students can enter when they are ready. Literacy

The benefits of onscreen testing for you: • There is no requirement for internal or external verification. • Tests are easy to administer and require only one single test. • No internet connection is required, increasing test security. • Installation, training and technical support is free. • Administration tasks are reduced. • There is no registration fee; you are only invoiced once a candidate has sat the test. • The software for ALAN onscreen tests can be installed onto your network or laptop making set-up easy.

How have UK centres used ALAN?

Multiple choice Onscreen

Teachers whose learners have taken our ALAN qualifications have reported an increase in confidence both in engagement with GCSE English and Mathematics, and with the challenges of GCSE study in general. What’s more, UK centres have used ALAN to develop a more integrated course structure - and have even used it to help students on vocational routes gain an academic qualification. See what UK schools think of ALAN by listening to one of our podcasts. For more information, visit: www.edexcel.com/ALANInternationalFeedback
