Arctic Seed Link

SEED VAULT The Seed Vault is a global effort, located in Svalbard archipelago, that stores many different kinds of seeds coming from all around the world. The process that happen within the strucure includes collecting, transporting, storing, testing, regenerating, and modifying seeds. However, these activities occur deep within the Vault itself, hidden from the public, which contradicts the global agenda for which the Seed Vault was built. About 2km away from the Vault is a small town called Longyearbyen that holds only 2,000 people. The town used to rely on coalmines as its main economic resource. However, in the recent years, tourism has become a strong monetary generator.

Crop Diversity The Crop Trust funds most of the gene banks around the world to safeguard crop diversity. To ensure food security, adapting to climate change, safeguarding biodiversity, protecting nutritional security, reducing poverty, and ensuring sustainable agriculture are six reasons to why conser ving crop diversity matters. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault carries a duplicate of seeds from almost every country around the world. There are a range of varieties from African and Asian food staples such as maize, rice, wheat, cowpea, and sorghum to European and South American varieties of eggplant, lettuce, barley, and potato. The vault carries 839,804 crop varieties and is able to store 4.5 million varieties of crops. Each variety contains an average of 500 seeds, which allows for 2.5 billion seeds to be stored in the Vault.

Project brief The Seed Vault, while is a global effort and an icon in the town of Longyearbyen, hides the activities that happen within itself. In order to bring more awereness to the process and the contribution of the Vault towards global issues, we intend to turn our lab into an educational center. It might make sense to place the new lab near the Vault, but we want to argue that placing it near the town is more sensible since it’s also a living space. The site that we propose is near the existing university, where the lab acts as an extension for educational purposes. However, looking at the distribution of existing infrastructures, we noticed that there is no connection at the town’s end sides, while it holds many notable programs such as the university, the gallery, art center, and guest houses. It will be a great opportunity for this lab to act not only as an educational center, but also a bridge that connects the two sides of the land’s ends. The project will be a linkage between the new lab and the Seed Vault, the university and the educational center, the old infrastructure and the new addition, and last but not least, the seen and the unseen.

BOREHOLES The Boreholes in Longyearbyen are spread throughout the island, in order for the scientists to har vest geothermal energy. They also use these to test the proccess of carbon dioxide movements underground. A few boreholes existed since the twon was still mining for coal in the earlier years.

The seatings are cladded with triple-pane glass on both sides. These glass panels are operable and can be rotated upwards so in the summer, the building can have a natural process of air exchange. These seatings are supported by a series of wooden bars running across from one mullion to another. They are also insulated by 1/2’ thick foam insulation.

Drainage gap between the glass panels and the wooden deck. Exhaustion pipes and water pipes a put between the large I-beams and the corregated metal deck. The glass is triple-pane glass with small widths supported by mulions every one foot, in order for pedestrians to walk on.

{Exhaustion Routes} Two direct exhaustion routes lead to the outside of the building.

The exhaustion route on the Western side of the building leads from the lab, through the kitchen, then the dormitory’s washrooms and then outside. To the Eastern side, the exhaustion route only spans from the dormitory’s washrooms to the exterior of the bridge. The pipes for exhaustion run above, between the two I-beam structural layers.
