Head Coach Tony Heath Praises His Championship Team By Melinda Wood Photos by Manuel Guerrero

fter weeks of battling, Pearland High School Head Coach Tony Heath and his team reached the pinnacle of Texas High School Football by clinching the 5A, Division I State Championship Title on December 18th, 2010 at Cowboys’ Stadium in Dallas. “It feels awesome,” Heath said about the team’s 28-24 victory over Euless Trinity High School. “It’s every coach’s dream to achieve this kind of win. In any profession you want to be at the top, so it feels great to be here.” This past 16 weeks have been a whirlwind for the Oilers as they continued to churn out big wins and even a few upsets ending the season with a perfect 16-0 record. Going into the championship game, the team was labeled the “underdog” by many, but came out as the first Pearland High School football team to win the state championship. Attributing their success to team chemistry, Heath is very proud of his players. “The kids have been incredible to coach,” Heath said. “They buy into what their coaches are saying. They are physically and mentally sharp, and they committed to work hard this season.” For Heath, this season is 14 years in the making. He came to Pearland in 1996 after winning the state championship with LaMarque High School as an assistant

coach. Since his debut as head coach with the Oilers, his teams have consistently grown stronger in the 5A division. Even before his coaching days, Heath has always had a love for the game of football. “Football came to me at a very young age,” Heath shared. “I grew up in Lubbock. My dad used to take me to all the Texas Tech University games. Sports were always a big part of my life.” Knowing he wanted to be a coach one day, he went on to play football in college at West Texas State University where he received his bachelor’s degree. Keeping his faith and family as priorities, Heath has had many role models that have helped shape him into the person he is today including past coaches and his father who he says taught him how to be positive and humble. Now, after years of hard work, Heath’s team has won on the biggest

stage in Texas high school football. The Touchdown Club of Houston also recognized Heath as Coach of the Year for his achievements. But, Heath remains humble about his recent accolades saying all the glory belongs to the players. “To be recognized by such a fine organization like the Touchdown Club of Houston is an honor, but that honor goes out to our staff and our team,” Heath said insisting it was a team award. Reflecting on his tenure so far with Pearland, Heath remembers the players he’s had the privilege to coach. “There’s a lot of stuff that’s culminating right now,” Heath said. “This game represents all 14 years of our players. I’ve always preached to these kids that they are continuing a tradition, but now they have stepped ahead and created their own tradition.” Looking to the future, Heath is excited to return to school after the Christmas break so his team can celebrate with their classmates. The City of Pearland will also honor the Oilers with a parade on January 8th. “These kids deserve all the praise coming to them,” Heath said. “It’s been so awesome to see them meet a goal they set at the beginning of the season.” Congratulations to the Oilers and their award-winning coach!

Paying For College While Saving For Retirement These two objectives are not mutually exclusive

It can be done. All across America, families are meeting a mighty financial challenge – paying college costs with retirement potentially on the horizon. How do they do it? They go about it consistently; they also get creative. First, make sure priorities are in the right order. Strange as it may sound, your retirement may need to take precedence over your child’s college education. Think about it. Your son or daughter might qualify for student loans or financial aid. By the time they are 30 or 35, they will have the earnings potential to pay those loans back. Do you see any ads out there for “retirement loans” or “retirement aid”? For most, it is much harder to earn money at age 65 than at age 35. Because of this, many choose to allow the younger generation to assume the debt. The following are some short-term and long-term ideas you may want to consider if you have college costs on your mind: Save for college the DCA way. While dollar-cost averaging is a useful way to build retirement savings, its merit often goes unrecognized when it comes to saving for higher education. If you put $40 a month even in a basic savings account with a tiny interest rate, over 10 years that is approaching $5,000. That’s nothing to sneeze at, and will certainly help out. Move the money from a checking account each month into a savings account, or … Consider a tax-advantaged college savings plan. Contribute to a 529 plan, which features tax-advantaged growth and tax-free withdrawals when the withdrawn

funds are used to pay qualified education costs. Not all 529 plans are the same – in fact, some of them will even provide a small cash “match” or “sign-up” bonus when you start your plan. Some 529 plans are even “prepaid” – that means you may be able to secure future tuition rates at current prices, usually at in-state public colleges. Another advantage of the prepaid plans – they are often guaranteed by the state.1,2 Exploit your credit card. Don’t pay for college with it … well, at least not directly. Some credit cards give you a cashback rewards option. Put the rewards toward college. Some of the major banks let you do this and so do online shopping websites such as Upromise. Keep your income as low as possible in the base income year. That is the calendar year that starts as your child is in the middle of his or her junior year in high school. That is the year when college financial aid departments start to look at a family’s earned and received income. If you can avoid taking capital gains or a distribution from a 401(k) or 403(b) in that year, that will keep your taxable income low. Will Roth IRA conversions raise eyebrows? Yes, they will. However, don’t stop contributing to your own retirement savings accounts, and feel free to pay off consumer debts with the money from your savings and checking accounts – the assets in these accounts aren’t used in financial aid formulas.1 Let the college know if your financial situation has changed. Has the value of your home fallen? Is your business netting you far less than it once did? Fi-

nancial aid departments should be willing to review these developments and may be able to adjust aid for your student accordingly. Make it a family affair. In some cultures, it is common for all members of a family to pitch in on the down payment or mortgage payments for a home. Consider this strategy as your family saves for college. Close friends and family members may be willing (or even excited) to make ongoing contributions to a college savings plan for your child, and/or an annual “birthday” contribution. They may find giving such a gift to be more meaningful and fulfilling than toy or clothing. In short, hunting for every scholarship or alumni connection you can and finding a great school at a reasonable price – that’s important. But it may be just as useful (if not more) to be both creative and consistent as you save for college. While it has always been a challenge, by putting some thought into it, most families and students can find ways to respond. Trust & Estate Tax Forum Andrew G. Shebay & Co., Helios Wealth Advisors and Capital Bank are organizing a series of seminars to discuss accounting and taxation for estates and trusts. Andrew G. Shebay & Co. has worked with estates and trusts in the Houston area since 1952. Many times when an individual’s assets are transferred to a trust, they are overwhelmed with new estate and trust terms and how the cash flow changes, which is very different from the way their personal affairs were handled. Clients want to have easy access to their advisors and they often ask us to refer attorneys and other professionals in Pearland.

Having all your professionals close by facilitates communication and tax planning. As a response to these requests, we have put together an estate and trust tax forum for attorneys, CPAs, bankers and financial planners in the Pearland area. The first topic will be “Mechanics of Fiduciary Law and Accounting”. The format will include a moderator and round table discussions with the other participants. This seminar will be Tuesday, January 25, 2011 from 11 am to 1 pm. It will be held at Pearland’s Chamber of Commerce [6117 Broadway]. To register, email or call 713-7824524 and provide your name, company, profession, e-mail and phone number. If you are a Chamber member, the seminar is complimentary; otherwise the seminar fee will be $20. If you or someone you know wants to meet other professionals to share their knowledge and to promote Pearland, please contact us.

The Back and Neck Clinics in Houston, Katy, Pearland, and Sugar Land are a dedicated team committed to excellence in the field of pain control. Pain is a complex, multi-factorial experience that may or may not be caused by injury to nerves, tissue or bones, back discs and joints, or even tendons and ligaments. Signals are transmitted ultimately by the nervous system to the central nervous system and brain, where it is processed and interpreted. Treatments range from something as simple as exercise and weight reduction but sometimes medications and procedures and even implanted devices may be necessary depending on how complex a patient’s pain problem is. The Back and Neck Clinics’ goal is to provide patient-oriented, ethical, safe, cost-effective and efficient pain care in order to restore function and to decrease pain. Medical Director, Abraham G. Thomas, M.D., is board certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties in Anesthesia and pain medicine bestowed by the American board of Anesthesiology and has over 13 years of practice. Improve your whole self and develop strength, stamina and flexibility, improve muscle tone and balance and best of all, reduce stress and tension. Owner and director Valerie Immore implements Vinyasa (“flow”) style classes based on John Friend’s Anusara Yoga. Anusara means to “align with grace” or “to step into the flow.” In the Anusara Yoga practice, the heart quality creates a spiritual context for physical alignments and actions, teaching one to open their heart to grace, which in turn allows the mind and body to increasingly open as well. As one opens to grace, they align with nature, the universe and with their own true essence, leading to more energy and overall wellness spiritually, physically, emotionally and mentally. Sundance Yoga Studio is dedicated in creating a loving environment of peace, spirit, healing and community. Each class consists of pranayama (breath techniques), raja yoga (meditation), hatha yoga (body movement) and savasana (relaxation). LSCS promotes a family environment where high school, junior high and elementary students interact with each other. These opportunities promote leadership skills in high school students, while younger students observe Christian role models in action. This is especially prevalent in elementary chapel services where high school students are encouraged to share their spiritual insights in everyday life experiences. Precious Stones, which is also on campus, provides a full daycare and aftercare program until 6 pm. Precious Stones provides not only daycare, but also a preschool using the Abeka curriculum for ages 2 and 3. Did you ever wonder what it would take to have your child pay better attention? Be more focused? Have more confidence? Exhibit better self control? Be more respectful to others? All parents want their children to develop good social and interaction skills, to become increasingly responsible for themselves as they grow older, to do their best in school, and to have fun during childhood. Many activities that children participate in help some of these character development qualities, but one of the most effective is the martial arts. This is because so much of the martial arts’ culture and tradition values the development of these characteristics. Bushi Ban International has been an active and dynamic force in the martial arts’ community in Pearland and the greater Houston area. With 9 locations in Houston and numerous others out of state and in other countries, Bushi Ban is acknowledged as one of the industry leaders. Whether studying for a Black Belt, getting in shape, losing weight, improving cardio fitness, improving personal health and well-being, or training in grappling, kickboxing, and MMA fighting arts, we are focused on each person achieving their personal best. Bushi Ban is a system of martial arts, fitness, and wellness that can be experienced by the entire family. Many of the members have siblings and parents participating in one or more of our programs. The available programs include our licensed After School Martial Arts Childcare and Summer Camp program, the cardio fitness workout with Power Kickboxing, Traditional Adult and Youth Martial Arts, Fighter’s Elite Mixed Martial Arts, as well as specialty classes in Self Defense, Weapons, Stretching,Tai Chi and Chi Kung. Classes are designed to be age and ability appropriate. Students are accepted for training as young as age 3 in our Little Warriors’s classes. Many have begun their martial arts’ journey at 50 or 60 and above. If you are looking for a great activity for your kids, yourself, or anyone you know, consider trying out one of the programs at Bushi Ban. See ad on inside front page.

Primrose Schools of Pearland Primrose Schools of Pearland have always recognized the importance of balance to parents. This is accomplished with its exclusive Balanced Learning curriculum which emphasizes learning, play, self-esteem, and character development. Balanced learning strategically blends child-initiated and teacher-directed activities, combining the two leading philosophies in early childhood education with a very special Primrose focus on character development and values. The child-initiated approach inspires children to think for themselves and to explore their environment and their own abilities. Through teacher-directed instruction, teachers scaffold learning by guiding children towards increasingly complex levels of understanding. Primrose Schools of Pearland provide educational experiences for children with ages ranging from 6 weeks to 12 years of age. We give parents peace of mind knowing their children are in a warm, safe learning environment with qualified professionals. Primrose Schools of Pearland values its commitment in “giving back” to the Pearland Community. As part of our Balanced curriculum, our Primrose children learn about generosity through our “Helping Hands “ Program. We will plant trees at a Pearland park, collect books for children, donate food to the Pearland Food Pantry, and collect food for Pearland pets. Coming in April is our 9th Annual “Spring Fling” which falls on a Saturday from 10-2 pm, and all proceeds are donated to charity. Primrose is an avid sponsor for our Pearland Youth Organizations. Protecting Your Plants During Cold Weather By Brent Moon

Frosty leaf. Photo from

ell, winter is officially here, and so far, we have been lucky not to have any extremely cold weather. By this time last year, we’d already had several bouts of freezing weather. The thing that bums me out about winter in the Houston area is that we can drop to plant-damaging temperatures one night and then jump back up into the 70’s a day or so later. Unfortunately, that one night can make our gardens look pretty bad for the rest of the winter. Here are some tips to prepare your plants when freezing temperatures are in the forecast: • Water the ground around your plants, if possible, before the cold weather arrives. Moist soil holds heat in better than dry soil. Also, a well-hydrated plant is better able to withstand freezing temperatures. • Wrap your plants with frost cloth, a blanket, an old sheet, etc. Using something breathable is the key. Avoid plastic as it can heat up too quickly in the sun and actually cook your plants. Frost cloth is available at your local nursery. Home Depot and Lowe’s also usually sell a product called the “Planket” that has a sewn in draw-string that allows you to cinch the frost cloth up around pots or shrubs. • If you don’t have access to frost cloth or old sheets, you can pile fallen leaves around your plants. This will help insulate them somewhat from the cold. • Another measure is to fill anything from old milk jugs to barrels with water and set them as close to your plants as possible. The heat that is slowly given off by the water will help protect your plants somewhat. • Finally, you can move potted plants inside the house or into the garage; however, don’t be surprised if you still get some damage if your garage is unheated. Banana tree wrapped in frost cloth. Following are some plants that typically need protection during cold weather snaps: Anything tropical in nature, such as houseplants, some hibiscus, Ixoras, bananas (if you want to give them the best opportunity to fruit), plumerias, most cacti, tender ferns, such as Boston fern, Desert Rose, orchids, certain palms such as Queen palms, etc. Plants that normally do not need protection from freezing temperatures are most of our normal landscape plants such as holly, pittosporum, azalea, privet, Osmanthus, and most trees, however, citrus trees can need protection if temperatures drop into the mid-20’s. Plan ahead and be prepared when the weatherman forecasts freezing temperatures. Protect your plants the best you can and remember, they are only plants and you can always replace them. If you have a prized plant and it is possible, bring it in the house for a few days until the cold weather passes. Brent Moon is local horticulturist with over 15 years of experience and is available for horticultural consultations. Contact him at for details.
