With all the problems around the world, it is most appropriate that Lions Clubs’ International Peace Poster Competition should have the theme “Share Peace”. Last year, Matlock Derwent Valley Lions Club entered this competition for the first time with only 3 entries, submitted by Anthony Gell School, from which the club could choose a winner. The club’s winning poster then went on to win the District competition. This year competition was extremely popular and we received 61 entries from Anthony Gell, Highfields and Lady Manners schools. Again, Pollyanna Pickering very kindly agreed to judge the submissions and chose an individual winner from each of the schools. Pollyanna said it was really difficult to decide from the excellent standard of all the artists.

Lion President Sheila Emerson presents Oscar Cousins with his certificate and voucher alongside Lion Molly Winder

On Saturday 12 December, a presentation ceremony was held at the Imperial Rooms, Matlock, in the presence of the Mayor of Matlock, Cllr. Steve Flitter. Lion President Sheila Emerson said, “I must thank all the secondary schools for taking part this year and their staff and pupils for being so enthusiastic to promote the theme of the competition. Also, Lion Molly Winder, who organised the project”. The winners were, Oscar Cousins (12) from Anthony Gell School, Katy Woods (13) from Highfields School and Betsy Day (12) from Lady Manners School. Each received a signed certificate and a voucher for £20, to purchase artists materials of their choice. Unfortunately, only Oscar was able to attend the event with his family. The other two winners were present with their prizes at their schools.
