Drum Civil War Hero Major Hendershot The birdeye maple case inset with oval metal plaque with presentation planchet “Presented to Major R.H. Hendershot. “The Drummer Boy of the Rappahannock” by B.H.Beale Womens National Relief Corps No1 at the entertainment in Music Hall. BANGOR MAINE. April 22nd 1886.”, completed with a leather carrying strap, and accompanied with leather case with brass planchet of maker M.Maier. Robert Henry Hendershot joined Company C of the 9th Michigan Infantry in 1862. His tales of heroism and exploits went national and being hailed “the Drummer boy of the Rappahannock” as well as being the youngest soldier, 12 years old. In later years he and his son, Cleveland, performed at GAR functions from Hawaii to Canada. Many times his claims were brought to light and some thought he was a fraud and a self serving showman. In the end he was exonerated by his peers including General Burnside, whom he served under. Condition: 8” tear to vellum. Sold for $2360
