arts & entertainment Alicia Ballard’s work on international tour

Artist going global Alex Browne Arts Reporter

When one door closes, another opens. That’s the motto for Alicia Ballard, whose energy-based, emotionally driven abstract and semi-abstract painting is finding an audience both locally and internationally, even with the usual distractions, discouragements and disappointments that are the lot of a White Rock-based artist. But she’s on an undeniable upswing currently – so much so that a calendar is necessary to keep up with her profusion of shows and participation in group exhibits, a product of industrious, ever-evolving work and continuing networking. Throughout February, selected acrylics, mixed media and watercolours by Ballard are highlighted in a display at White Rock Library. From March 1 to 23, a solo show of her work will be the exhibit at Semiahmoo Library. And from April 1 to 30, some of her latest paintings will be featured with new work by well-known White Rock artist Irena Shklover in a joint exhibit at the Community Arts Council of White Rock gallery at Windsor Square. Meanwhile, Ballard – born in Buenos Aires of Hungarian parents, and raised in Argentina and Uruguay – has seen her joyful large-scale abstract Intermezzo Giocoso act as an international ambassador for her work. It’s currently at the International Art Fair as Mar del Sur, Buenos Aires, from whence it will travel to the Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes Rosa Galisteo in Santa Fe. And in March, by arrangement with the artist, Intermezzo Giocoso will be see page 48
