Annual Report 2015-2016

LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Friends, I am pleased to share with you the 2015-2016 Annual Report. The support we receive each year ensures that we can meet the challenges of educating our bright and gifted students. Over the first four months of my tenure at Peabody, it has become clear that Peabody School has a very committed staff, dynamic parents invested in their students’ learning, and impressive students who care passionately about their own education. I feel privileged to be part of this community as we all continue along the path of excellence for our students. I understand why Peabody is a great place to grow and learn because we are a community of caring people with a single mission, to do what is in the best interest of the children. We will continue with that philosophy and I am sure our school will grow stronger as a result. Over the next few months, I look forward to engaging our entire school community in an open discussion about our goals going forward. I can promise you that we will be focused and strategic in setting a promising direction for our school. We thank all of our donors that have played such a pivotal role in the success of our school. Although much has been accomplished, we still have work to do. Please consider making a gift to the school this year to continue our forward momentum and to ensure that a Peabody School education continues to be second to none. Thank you for being part of Peabody School! Best wishes,

Robert Orlando Head of School

LETTER FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES Dear Peabody School Families, On behalf of the Peabody Board of Trustees, we hope your 2016-2017 academic year is off to a great start. This fall we have been pleased to welcome some new faces in new roles at Peabody, including our fourth Head of School Rob Orlando, and Victoria Young as our Assistant Head of School. Our teachers and students - both new and returning - have hit the ground running, and we are excited for the upcoming year. While some things change, however, Peabody is still fundamentally the same in all the best ways. For the past 22 years, Peabody School has served academically advanced students with a rigorous curriculum in a small and supportive environment. We provide a differentiated classroom experience, and we continue to seek a diverse population of engaged and enthusiastic students and faculty who love to learn and grow together. We are glad you are part of this community. We are pleased to present our 2015-16 Annual Report to you here, and we look forward to sharing the news of Peabody’s financial strength in the years ahead. We are currently working on finalizing our new endowment (based on a gift from our founder Harriet Kaplan and her family), and we continually strive to solidify our financial security to ensure the School remains a resource for gifted children in our community. The Annual Report demonstrates that Peabody closed the 2015-16 fiscal year by exceeding our Annual Fund goal, and we hope to do so again this year. But, as you know, tuition does not cover all the expenses incurred in running a high quality educational program. Thus the Peabody Annual Fund serves a critical budgetary role -- ensuring our teachers are compensated fairly, our students have the resources they need, and our tuition remains affordable. We ask you at this time to join the Board in making a meaningful gift to the Peabody 2016-17 Annual Fund. We strive to hit 100% participation, and with your support, we will continue to grow and better our goal of sparking a passion for learning and empowering students with lifelong curiosity. Together, we have an obligation to provide our students with opportunities that will ignite their individual talents and passions, making them contributing members of society. Thank you for your continued support. Best regards, Charles Lunsford Chair

MISSION STATEMENT Peabody School’s mission is to serve the needs of gifted and academically advanced children of all backgrounds in one or more areas by promoting cognitive, social, and emotional development for each child at a rate commensurate with his or her ability, while providing a foundation for students to become lifelong learners. This mission is best embodied in our motto: Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.

PHILOSOPHY The most effective educational experience for gifted students is in a full-time program with their intellectual peers, led by highly skilled and uniquely qualified teachers who create differentiated curricular activities and provide instruction specially tailored to meet the students’ learning needs. Peabody values the transformational growth that is achieved when teachers and students experience the joy of learning together.

LETTER FROM THE DEVELOPMENT OFFICE Dear Peabody Friends, It is undeniable that Peabody fosters a unique educational environment and generates an incredible love for learning! And while I am still relatively new, this excitement and enthusiasm is contagious and exudes from staff, students and parents alike. As a direct result of the tremendous financial support exhibited last year by the parents, staff, alumni and friends of Peabody, $524,337 was raised. This included $156,675 of unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund. As a community, we can exceed that amount this year, and it will be my privilege in helping the Peabody community meet that challenge! The pages that follow this letter are the most important to the Annual Report, as they include the names of all those who have made Peabody’s accomplishments possible. Each donor recognized the value that a Peabody education provides, while understanding that it is not possible without financial support. A tax-deductible gift to the Peabody Annual Fund is the most direct and impactful way to enhance the experiences for the Peabody community. We extend a huge “thank you” for your generosity over this past year and hope to be able to count on your support again this year. To those of you that have not made a gift in the past, I ask you to consider making this year your first! Ask anyone who has made a gift what inspires their commitment to Peabody, and you will instantly see the reasons are endless. I look forward to getting to know all of the wonderful people that make Peabody the amazing environment that it is, and helping this year to be one of its best thus far. The future looks bright thanks to all of your support! With much gratitude, Vaughan Weidig Clark Director of Development
