MOTHER HAS UNANSWERED QUESTIONS

Child dies at school NCEBA DLADLA

A

KWANOBUHLE mother Nomakhaya Festile (33) is still struggling to come to terms with the death two weeks ago of her 7year old daughter, Siqhamo, who she suspects was electrocuted while climbing her school’s security gate. Siqhamo, who was a Grade 1 pupil at Sikhothina Combined Primary School in KwaNobuhle, was buried last Thursday. She was the elder of Nomakhaya’s two children. The incident happened during break time while she was playing with other children. According to the teachers, this was a newly installed gate to protect the school from thieves and vandals who continued to break in and steal valuable property such as computers. Nomakhaya was, however, told by the school authorities that Siqhamo had suffered from an epileptic fit. “The teachers wanted to know whether I was drinking (alcohol). I said no. They asked whether my child had been suffering from fits, and whether she had eaten before going to school. I told them she had eaten and was her bubbly self when she went to school, and that she was not suffering from epilepsy,” said Nomakhaya. Nomakhaya’s brother, Mike Ngxonono, who is a qualified electrician, said, “I enquired from other children what happened after realising that she was electrocuted – even though there were no marks on her hands. We want the school to admit that she was shocked by electricity.” “We are waiting for the post mortem where our suspicions will be confirmed that the child was indeed shocked by electricity.”

Police spokeperson Warrant Officer Gerda Swart said they were still waiting for the results of the post mortem - which normally takes two weeks to be released - to know the exact cause of death. The Department of Education has launched a full-scale investigation into what really transpired at the school, said Provincial spokesperson Mali Mtima. “We have received the news of the child’s death from our District office and urged them to give the family their fullest support. We have also sent our legal team to check all the legalities of what has happened and what should be our next point of entry. We are concerned about the loss of life,” said Mtima. School principal and members of staff visited the Festile family to offer them their support and prayers before the funeral. PE Express Indaba also learnt that Sikhothina Primary School offered R3 000 to the Festile family including a tent and other items to assist with the funeral arrangements. Meanwhile, EC Children’s Rights and Advice Centre’s Advocate Petrus Majola said he was shocked by the news of the child’s death at school. “We want to send condolences to the family and will be checking whether there was any negligence on the part of the Department of Education and the company that installed security (gates) at the school,” said Khula Community Development Project Director Majola, adding that he visited the school last Friday and found the teachers already gone with some children playing by themselves. “I told them to go home as they could not remain at school without teacher-supervision,” he said.

Prayer for victims of domestic violence NCEBA DLADLA VICTIMS of domestic violence and abuse will be remembered during a mass prayer meeting scheduled to take place at Ethiopian Episcopal Church in Matanzima Street, KwaNobuhle tomorrow, Thursday November 28. The mass prayer service, to start at 11am, is also part of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign against Women and Child Abuse which was launched by MEC for Safety and

Liaison Helen Sauls-August and other Stakeholders on Monday. Tomorrow’s event is organised by Phaphani Rape Crises in conjunction with the organised churches in KwaNobuhle in support of people who have been mistreated, abused and dehumanised in the recent past. According to Phaphani Rape Crises Director, Nocawa Sinam, all the church denominations in KwaNobuhle were expected at the

event aimed at glorifying God the Creator. “This has been a very busy year for us. We want to thank the Almighty God for his protection, provision and sustenance throughout the year. We are aware, however, that some of us suffered at the hands of abusers and criminals, hence the prayer meeting,” said Sinam. The event, Sinam said, was aimed at giving victims of abuse, domestic violence as well as rape survivors hope.

She added, “This time around we’re also thinking about those who are suffering in silence because they do not know that someone out there cares.” Government Departments like the SAPS, Justice, Correctional Services and Social Development will be represented during the event, said Sinam, adding that each department will be giving a talk on the services they render and the assistance available to the victims of all kinds of abuse.

NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the South African Police (SAPS) in Kwazakhele have lambasted two women who acted irresponsibly by neglecting and abandoning two children in separate incidents last week - on the eve of the launch of 16 Days of Activism against the Abuse of Women and Children. “Kwazakhele police were informed of a woman from Njoli Road who found an abandoned baby in front of her house at about 7pm last Friday,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Thembi Gwe. According to Gwe, the woman allegedly heard a knock on her door, but when she opened there was nobody at the door except for an infant who was covered with a blanket and left alone there. “She (the woman) went to her neighbours to find out whether they recognised the child but nobody knew the child,” said W/O Gwe,

adding that the woman called police who took the infant to Dora Nginza Hospital for medical examination. The child was taken to a place of safety while police were still looking for the whereabouts of the (suspect) mother. In another case, an unnamed woman brought a three-month old baby to the care of the Dora Nginza hospital authorities after her neighbours left the child with her and did not come back. “The woman saw that the child was not looking well. She took her to the clinic where she was later referred to Dora Nginza hospital,” said Gwe, adding that the caring neighbour found the parents drunk at a tavern. “We are disturbed by what these women did to their children, at a time when we are launching a campaign against women and children abuse. We cannot tolerate this. Serious punishment will be meted out against anyone abusing and neglecting children,” said the police spokesperson. No arrests have yet been made.

Rape victim gets new lease on life NCEBA DLADLA THE 16 Days of activism of No Violence against Women and Children was launched in style in Nelson Mandela Bay this Monday, November 25 with the celebration of a successful partnership between those who are vehemently opposed to Gender-based Violence in all its facets. In a show of mercy and good will, the sad story of a 16- year old orphaned Kwazakhele girl, turned into joy. Nwabisa Mapapu, who was allegedly raped and impregnated by an unknown assailant two years ago and who is now a mother of a 2 year-old baby girl, had

been saved from living in a shack with the child and her unemployed older brother, Derrick Mapapu. A safe and secure place was found for her and the fully furnished home in Chatty, Rainbow Village, which is popularly known as Marikana, was handed over to her. She also received clothing and groceries. This was thanks to SAPS Kwazakhele Communications Officer Warrant Officer Thembi Gwe who followed up on Nwabisa’s case to initiate what was to become Project Nwabisa with the SABC, Departments of Home Affairs, Education, Correctional Services, HDA, Men for Change, the Women’s Network and an NGO, Ubomi Obutsha - all working together

to restore the lost dignity of the girl who once aspired to become a medical doctor. Nwabisa now wants to become a police officer. She received an ID, her baby has a birth certificate and she is receiving a social grant. MEC for Human Settlements, Safety and Liaison Helen Sauls-August, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality led by Deputy Executive Mayor Chippa Ngcolomba and Portfolio Chairperson Cllr for Human Settlements, Cllr Buyisile Mkavu, the SABC led by Regional Manager Zola Yeye, the SAPS, the clergy and other caring members of society showed just how abominable the scourge of violence against the most vulnerable is in our communities.

According to SABC regional boss Yeye, an incident which “was initially an act of despicable and incomprehensible crime which showed that women and children are, in this day and age still oppressed, suppressed and subjected to violence and sexual abuse, has turned out to unite the communities to say, ‘No! Enough is enough’,” he said. “As the ANC we are happy when people demonstrate what we can do working together. Crime prevention is our responsibility; all of us. At the same time, we want to commend officer Gwe for her courage and commitment to her work and humanity,” said Deputy Mayor Ngcolomba, adding that criminals have no place in our communities.

Pensioner on crusade to rescue people who lost houses NCEBA DLADLA A PORT Elizabeth man, Sabelo Williams, is spending sleepless nights assisting people who lost their houses, in getting them back. In his lonesome crusade, Williams, who is a pensioner, is getting the attention of the Master of the High Court - dealing with estate cases. He is winning cases and restoring people’s lost dignity - all of this, free of charge! A number of people in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality entered into agreements where they sold houses to one another from R15 000 up to R45 000 each and received Title Deeds. It has since emerged that the deeds of sale of the 99-year- lease houses, in a number of those transactions of the 1990s were not legitimate, and some were not even written down. Williams, of eMagaleni in KwaZakhele, is popularly known as Tshawe, his clan name. He is working at Ward 20 Cllr Bongo Nombiba’s office in Hoho Street every Wednesday. He is assisting victims of illegal buy-and- sell transactions. Even though Tshawe started assisting KwaZakhele residents, people from all around Port Elizabeth townships visit him for help. “It’s a huge challenge. We discover that there are many of those shady deals in the past and now it involves the selling of RDP houses. Some of those deals were not even

recorded,” said Mbatsha. In many of the cases they had seen in KwaNobuhle, there was the involvement of a loan shark (umatshonisa) and in some cases, of a lawyer. She said, “These cases create a lot of conflict between families. They result in children being homeless.” Mbatsha said as the community police forum they assist in civic cases but mostly refer cases to the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) which has been of assistance in many of the cases.

Youth flock to Lovelife Y-Centre for edutainment NCEBA DLADLA KWANOBUHLE LoveLife Y-Centre was a hive of edutainment last week as the youth of this VWSA-sponsored centre kept their peers informed and entertained. “We had an exciting and busy week of engaging the youth in important matters that are aimed at encourgaing them to be HIV free. Obviously, we looked at our peers’ values to encourage positive and healthy living,” said Monwabisi Khonzani, an Impintshi. Khonzani said their ivolvement with the centre helps them in building their self-esteem. “In an attempt to keep the youth off the streets, the centre organised education sessions involving a number of stakeholders like the Departments of Education and Social Development,” said Khonzani. This was followed by entertainment by local musicians and dancers. “We also played sports, especially netball, where guys also played,” said Khonzani. “We had rappers, Hip Hop artists and dancers doing what they do best. It was fun,” said Khonzani adding that they invited Azz Veritazz, a Hip Hop artist from Port Elizabeth to sample a single from his current album, “I Am Moving”. Local Hip hop artist Ghetto also took the stage. Iimpitshi also taught the crowds their well-known dance moves called Ice-Breakers.

Game thriller at Jabavu stadium tonight NCEBA DLADLA FOOTBALL lovers have an interesting game to watch at the Jabavu Rugby stadium, KwaNobuhle tonight (Wednesday November 27) when Imbabala Young Stars FC entertain Stokes United FC in their Nobuhle-Despatch Football Association (NODEFA) Premier League fixture. Kick off is 7:10pm. This is one of the outstanding Premier league matches which were postponed owing to the stormy weather last Sunday, according to NODEFA president Monde Mhletywa. On equal number of points with KUBS but leading the log owing to their goal difference, Imbabala are poised to increase the lead if

they beat Stokes tonight. But the latter will be coming with their guns blazing as they will not allow Imbabala to have their things easy. Mhletywa agreed, “The match between Imbabala Young Stars and Stokes United is going to be a humdinger. I think a lot of people will be interested in the outcome of this match.” The opening match will be between Eleven Stars FC and Young Pirates FC. Kick off is at 5:30pm. The other matches will be played at the Soccer stadium as follows: City Style FC versus Young Callies FC at 5:30pm and Manchester United FC vs Golden Chiefs FC at 7:10pm.

BSA wishes licensees good festive season NCEBA DLADLA BOXING South Africa (BSA) offices in Midrand, Johannesburg will be closed for the 2013 year-end on 17 December and re-open on January 13 2014, according to BSA Acting Chief Executive Officer, Loyiso Mtya. Mtya took the time off to wish all those who were already preparing for Christmas Holidays a wonderful festive season. “BSA would like to take this opportunity to thank boxing licensees for their diligent efforts during the year. It is worth noting that all efforts small as they may seem to be to us

as individuals, mean a whole lot in our endeavours to add value, dignity and respect in the presentation of the noble art to the public. We therefore wish you a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year,” said Mtya. Of course, this has been a wonderful year with South African boxers despite the country having only IBF Flyweight kingpin Moruti Mthalane holding on to the credible world title. Former world IBF Junior Featherweight champion Jeffery Mathebula and ex WBC International bantamweight title holder Vusi Malinga will be challenging for the IBF crowns in December.

The likes of Hekkie Budler and Tommy Oosthuizen, the IBO Miniflyweight and IBO Super Middleweight champions respectively, shone at the international scene with their good wins against credible opposition this year. Also making their mark were ex IBF Miniflyweight champion Nkosinathi Joyi, the current WBA Interim champion and IBO featherweight titlist Simphiwe Vetyeka who is pencilled in to challenge for a WBO title in December. Cruiserweights Thabiso Mchunu (ABU Champ) and Ilunga Makabu (WBC Interim Champ) and WBF Junior Welterweight cham-

pion Zolani Marali held their own and will hopefully look for 2014 as the year of better things. Mtya said, “All those who wish to renew their licences should contact their nearest BSA offices, fill the forms in and submit them back. “Boxing SA will consider all applications according to the requirements and compliances of the different categories and then recommend for approval.” Mtya said all applicants approved by BSA will be officially registered and legally delegated to perform the duties as applied and licensed for.

Continental Express sponsored by Motherwell Midas SELBY MADIKANE MOTHERWELL Midas Motor Spares Shop stretched its helping hand to KwaZakhele Township community club called Continental Express FC in the form of sets of kit recently. According to Continental Express Team Manager Lonwabo Sambani, the kit had arrived at the crucial time because their club was experiencing shortage of players’ jerseys. Sambani revealed that his side’s five year vision of playing in the regional league might be achieved since people like Midas were the catalysts in the entire club. “The spirit is very high in our club because there are people like Midas who understand the plight of the less fortunate clubs like ours. Some of the executive members have to dig deep into

their pockets to make sure that the club’s needs are fulfilled. But other people out there make matters easy for us. Our club’s membership grows day by day. We have a women’s team which compete in SAFA EC Sasol League, three netball teams and a lot of junior teams which all depend on the few members who are employed. This kit will also help us a lot,” said Sambani. Continental President Jimmy Tinise thanked Midas for sponsoring 16 piece kit to their club. Tinise said, “On behalf of the club I would like to thank Midas Manager Thando Mahobe and his company for making a very big difference in our club. They have added value to our club and we are very proud of Midas. To other people this sponsor might look little but to us this is very remarkable.”

Shining Stars draw with Ikamva Movers SELBY MADIKANE IN what was described as the grudge match, Shining Stars shared the spoils 1-1 with Ikamva Movers during the MOFA Build It Premier League clash at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on 23 November 2013. In fact both sides came to the game with the intention of collecting the three maximum points but both were equal to the task. The game was characterized by rough tackles but the referee did stamp his authority. It was Stars who broke the ice following a well taken goal by Siyanda Mani. Movers threw everything into the game and their hardworking

striker Vuyo Moremi banged in the equalizing goal for the final 1-1. Movers’ goalkeeper was a man of the match when he stopped many shots fired by Stars strikers. Young Romans kept their hopes of winning MOFA Build It Premier League prestige trophy alive when they beat Real Strikers 1-0 in the tough game. Following many draws, Young Tigers beat Liverpool 2-1 while Tomorrow Stars redeemed themselves when they deservedly beat Young Ideas 4-2. Lion Stars edged out Manchester United 2-1.

Well done, Dynamos SELBY MADIKANE FOLLOWING their two recent losses, Dynamos proved the critics wrong that they were not palookas following their job well-done. Dynamos grabbed three points with both hands in their 2-1 win over

BUBS and they also secured a 3-1 victory from Leeds United. Having gone down 2-0 to Young Romans, Young Professionals whacked BUBS 3-1. Zamazama caused a major upset when they pipped the title chasers Brazil Brothers 1-0 and also drew 1-1 with another high-riding side Unit-

ed Comrades who trailed 1-0 to Juventus. Fresh from the defeat, Brazil Brothers thumped Santos 4-2. Other ZAFA Njeya Investments Premier League results: *Leeds United 3-2 Continental Express *Seven United 2-3 NUBS *Ghetto XI 2-2 Seven United *NUBS 4-1 Golden Brothers *XI Angels 1-1 Young Romans
