WELCOME

To Steppler Farms a “Piece of the Program”Female Sale Welcome to Steppler Farms first Piece of the Program Female Sale on December 12, 2016. We have been breeding Charolais exclusively for 41 years and today manage 450 actively enrolled registered Charolais females. Our herd stems from foundation cow families as well as from elite females purchased over the years from across Canada. The females on offer on December 12 reflect our selective bull buying over the past 15 years – from 30 herd bull hopefuls in total. We used only herd bulls from that 30 that met out strict criteria and thus have produced these sale females that truly represent a “Piece of the Program”. We are truly proud to offer this diverse functional group of females. These cattle will enhance anyone’s program. We have selected animals from the top end of the herd; each one of these cows has proven her ability. A select few are mated to Sparrows Braxton 519C and HRJ Crowd Favourite 515C, two of the most talked about herd bulls in the industry. The majority of females on offer are sired by our renowned herd bulls Sparrows Seminole 927W and Sparrows Copenhagen 210Z. These two bulls have produced the most consistent groups of high functioning and productive sons and daughters raised. The bred heifers are mated to one of three calving ease sires: Steppler Jacksonville 335Z and new heifer bulls LAE Cruise 502C and LAE Canadiana 561C. We believe that heifers need time to develop and that the first calving should be an easy one. When we select our heifer bulls, we select for calving ease as well as for correct structure, and strong maternal traits. The heifer calves on offer are exciting as well. This is the first year for JWX Burnin It Down 613B calves and man are they good. Long spined, correct, and with performance – everything we hoped from this young herdsire. Another year has come and gone and the farm continues to grow! Adam and Amber’s new baby Louise Clara was born September 28. Amber is on maternity leave from her vet tech position and both parents are enjoying their new daughter. Adam just managed to get the crop off in time! Geoff continues to fly full time for Air Canada and his wife Sarah will soon return to work as a speech pathologist. Ian experienced another good honey harvest this past summer; Sandy and the 4 oldest children are enthusiastically working on their 4-H beef projects. Dan and Pat continue to enjoy all aspects of the farm! Katie and I are enjoying our two energetic kids while Katie continues to work as a physiotherapist. As always we encourage everyone to come to A Piece of the Program on December 12, 2016. You can contact me anytime about any female on offer. Hope to see you on the 12th!

~Andre

As you go through the catalogue you will see that Steppler Farms really are giving you a piece of the program. The cattle offered in their first sale are from the top end of the keeper pen and nothing in the sale isn’t something they would keep for themselves. They wanted to put their best on offer and truly showcase the genetics in this tremendous operation. From some proven brood cows, to the productive looking bred heifers and the powerful heifer calf offering, there is something that will fit in the very top of any program in North America. As well, they are offering all the females in their show string that can be seen at Ag-Ex and Agribition. Steppler Farms has been developing this program for over 40 years and have the second most cows enrolled in Canada. This allows them to pick from a very large genetic base and gives you a great cross section to choose from. They have invested in some of the high selling bulls in the breed and kept them exclusive to their program so this is your opportunity to purchase these genetics. If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit with Andre, give him a call or see him at one of many events this fall. You will find someone who is enthusiastic of the breed and a perfectionist in everything he does. This is an excellent diverse farming operation with the whole family working together. We look forward to seeing you on December 12th in Miami and if we can be of any assistance or get your more information before the sale to help facilitate your purchasing, please don’t hesitate to contact us, any of the sale staff or Andre.

Always in the best interest of Charolais, Helge & Candace By

A Piece of the Program Female Sale

H E RD H EALT H Production and efficiencies are very important on our farm. We have a short, intensive breeding program. All females are AI bred for efficiencies and calculated matings. We try to get 95% of the cows exposed in the first cycle with a 70- 75% conception rate. Correct, accurate nutrition, high quality semen, and time invested in heat detection and inseminating are the keys to achieving this target. Once the cows go through the 28 day AI program, the herdbulls go to work. Since most of the cows have conceived already, the herdbulls finish the job. The mature bulls easily travel throughout the last 32 days of the breeding program. All females are pregnancy checked early in the summer and culls and opens are taken out. We maintain a high and rigorous herd health regime as outlined below. This enables us to have a successful breeding program and ensures potential buyers of the high health standards of these sale cattle.

Copenhagen’s depth of quarter, curly hair and his excellent foot led us to buy our first horned bull in a very long time. Looking back, what an excellent decision to have made. Copenhagen’s first calves are all stamped with his depth of quarter and full hair coat and they are as correct as they come. The Copenhagen heifer calves were the first to cycle in our replacement pen. The Copenhagen daughters are simply awesome. Lots of milk and beautiful udders. Top 2% for Yearling Weight, 1% for milk and 1% for Total Maternal. Copenhagen’s mother and grandmother are two of the best uddered females I have ever seen.

In addition, Seminole is correct in every way and is perfectly footed with lots of hair and excellent testicle development. With Seminole, we won 2010 Supreme Champion Bull at MLE as well as winning Grand Champion Charolais bull the same year. We used Seminole heavily in our breeding program and he now has a spot as the cornerstone sire at Steppler Farms. Seminole has Breed Leading Stats: Top 15% for Weaning Weight, Top 5% for Yearling Weight, Top 10% for Milk and Top 3% for Total Maternal. And let’s not forget the 1.5 BW EPD and a calving ease EPD of 56.8. The Seminole females are simply awesome, with excellent udders and ample milk. 5

We bought Braxton because we believe he has the potential to take our cow herd to the next level. By teaming up with Beck Farms, Lang SK, we were able to purchase this breed leader who ended up as the highest selling bull in Canada that year. Braxton is the most impressive bull that we have ever had walking at Steppler Farms. Braxton is so fluid in his stride; he is quiet, deep chested, huge hipped, with perfect structure, and he comes from a tremendous cow. Wade and I decided to keep Braxton exclusive, so the only way to access Braxton genetics in 2016 is to buy one of the four females bred to him in this sale.

We added two bulls from the Horseshoe E program to ensure consistency in calving ease. LAE Cruise 502C and LAE Canadiana 561C fit the bill. We purchased JWX Burnin it Down 613B as the high selling bull out of the 2015 Wilgenbusch bull sale. We were looking for an outcross pedigree that would add length and performance. Burnin It Down has done exactly what we wanted him to do and more. 613B’s mother is a Junction daughter still working in Wilgenbusch’s herd at 10 years of age. Her functionality and longevity made it an easy decision to bring Burnin It Down into our breeding program. Burnin It Down is in the top 4% for weaning, 1% in YW, 15% for Milk, and top 2% of the breed for Total Maternal.

Here is the calf out of Steppler White Arrow 163B, who was our 2015 Agribition second high seller to Dale and Natalie McKay. DSY 163D is the only Blue Value heifer calf to sell this year. Maternal traits plus! Co-owned with Dale McKay.

DSY 6213D - Here’s one of my favourite sale heifer calves. This stylish, stout, extremely correct Copenhagen daughter is in the breed’s top percentiles for carcass, milk, and YW. DSY 6213D comes from a very productive cow family. Her mother, DSY 213Z, is a full sister to Steppler Veltro 226A one of our high selling 2014 sale bulls who sold to McAvoy Charolais, Arelee, Sask. Maternal sister sells as Lot 22.

139D is one of my favourite JWX Burnin it Down 613B heifer calves. She is long spined, easy doing, and comes from the White Arrow cow family. 139D’s EPD are quite impressive – top 15% WW, top 4% YW and balanced with top 10% Milk and top 3% Total Maternal. DSY 139D is very docile and would make an excellent junior project.
