AS I SEE IT

Ranch Review Robbie Chomik

Last year at this time, we were all excited and gung-ho about how hot the cattle business was. Is it the same as it was last year at this time? Probably not. Is it bad enough that we should panic like Chicken Little? I don’t think so. Personally, I feel the market may have hit a little hiccup, but we shouldn’t panic and jump ship. I am a believer that, when it comes to anything, you should stick to your plan, or be as close to it as possible. So, what is your plan? In last year’s Fall Connection, I asked the question: When does herd rebuilding start? Is this it? Is this year shaping up to be a herd-rebuilding year? If calf prices are a tick back from previous years, will you keep more replacement heifers to add to the herd? In general, I assume everyone had adequate moisture to make feed, and in conversations I hear that most areas are sitting well when it comes to the feed stack. So, with full feed yards and slightly lower calf prices, does it make sense to rebuild? The cull cow market has also hit a

speed bump. Will we decide to keep the “old girl” for one more year because we think she should bring more at the local sale barn? What is driving the current market trends or live cattle prices at the sale barn? Slaughter cattle futures are looking a little bleak. Is this a reaction to the current political landscape, or has the consumer hit the peak of what they are willing to pay at the meat counter for our product? Or is it a little bit of both? Is the price of beef actually high, or is it where it should be? It seems the same folks who stare at the meat counter and complain about the cost of $8/lb. ground beef — something that can feed the family — have no problem spending over $7 on one Frappuccino. Most of the seedstock producers have been busy weaning calves. When it comes to weaning calves, what is the best strategy that works for your operation? Traditional abrupt weaning — pull the calves and pray for the best? Two-stage weaning with a nose flap? Or fenceline weaning? Fence-line weaning seems to be gaining more interest all the time. It appears to be one of the lowest-

stress methods for the animal, and in return, less stress means healthier calves. Healthier calves mean more pounds, and more pounds are always a good thing. In this issue, you will come across various ads from bull sales, female consignment sales, multiple herd dispersals, and fall show dates. We encourage you, if you have the time, to hit the road, take in a show or two, and visit with those exhibitors you come across. You will also see a profile on a young Charolais cattleman who is making his mark in his own way. The Charolais winnings from 4-H and junior shows across Canada, featured near the back of this issue, are a huge testament to the quality of livestock you folks continue to raise year after year. The Charolais breed is well represented. Thank you to everyone who submitted results. As always, check out our website, www.charolaisbanner.com, for an extensive list of shows and sales and to view catalogues. Remember, if Justin Harcourt or I can be of any assistance, please feel free to give us a call. Have a safe and bountiful harvest. Robbie

Robbie

Charolais Connection • Fall 2026

The fall of 2026 will mark the fourth annual edition of The Pursuit Sale at Kay-R Charolais. It’s the result of a club calf program started by Kord Phillips, the youngest of five-generations on the farm near Waskatenau, AB. The program grew from Kord’s 4-H years when he decided to breed his own steers with the support of his mom and dad, Arlana and Kasey, and his grandpa, Clinton Phillips. The very first cow he AI’d to a clubby bull was a cow picked from his dad’s purebred Charolais herd. He then bought a Charolais bred heifer and started breeding her clubby. From there, he partnered with his Grandpa – picking out bred heifers from his commercial herd to breed clubby. He still has some of those cows. One

went on to become one of his best producing cows. He has flushed her and recently sold half interest to an outfit in South Dakota. The first year of the sale, Kord had about 10 head to sell. He has added about five head each year since, including some heifers. This year will be his largest offering yet, with upwards of 20 head, including steers and both clubby and purebred heifer calves. The calves are sold through a timed online auction on the American site Steer Bidder. Kord feels the site has a strong following and gives his calves maximum exposure to the right audience, American and Canadian alike. His calves are sold in Canadian dollars. Kord has quickly built a reputation for producing

No matter where they are, Kord’s buyers have found great success in the show ring.

high-quality club calves, with his cattle selling across North America. Some of his top-selling steers have gone to Oklahoma, Texas, and British Columbia, while others stayed in Alberta to compete at Calgary Stampede, Farm Fair and Agribition. No matter where they are, Kord’s buyers have found great success in the show ring. A steer that sold in the first sale went undefeated at five jackpot shows in Oklahoma. At the Oklahoma Youth Expo (OYE), one of the largest youth shows in the region, he was named champion heavyweight in a class of more than 200 crossbred steers. The top selling steer at last year’s sale brought $50,000 and went to Texas. Another steer from last year was third at the Calgary Stampede show and a top three winner at 14 shows total. A heifer sold in last year’s sale won Calgary this year and three of four jackpot shows. In his words, Kord finds it “very rewarding to see

stuff like that happen for good people” that he sells to. By August this summer, he was already receiving texts from people wanting to see his calves ahead of the September 25th sale day. Kord credits that to a number of factors. One is using the American clubby bulls that he has found to be most consistent, along with certain cow families that have proven to perform well. He sees many similarities to the purebred business in that you need to start with the same basics: quality, structure, and eye appeal. Another key part of the program is that every animal is sold “ready to go” to the show ring. Kord takes the time to feed, halter break and clip each calf.

If you’re going to use a purebred with club calf genetics, Charolais is the best cross for size, structure, and hair.

Some buyers take delivery right after the sale and head straight into the fall show season, depending on where they are located. Service is key also a major part of the program. Kord’s relationship with a buyer does not end when the calf leaves the farm. He attends as many of the shows and jackpots as he can and helps to clip and fit the animals he has sold. “I try to always be just a phone call or text away, and try to help as much as I can. If there’s anything I can do to help make the project keep looking good or doing better, the more chance the person or family will be back.” At the Calgary Stampede this summer, eight steers and one heifer from Kord’s program were in the show. He helped clip and fit all of them. “We really try to have good customer service.” While Kord admits he has “every colour of club calf,” he also points out that a large majority of the females in his program have Charolais influence. One part of his breeding philosophy is to keep a red

gene in the cattle so they can always be bred back Charolais. One cross he finds especially successful is a clubby bull on a clubby x Charolais cow or a purebred Charolais. “If you’re going to use a purebred with club calf genetics, Charolais is the best cross for size, structure, and hair.” He has also noticed that the Charolais colours – gold and silver – seem to be gaining popularity every year. Next spring, Kord will calve out about 45 clubbybred cows and/or recips, but he’s not done building the program. His next venture will be offering semen from some of his own club calf-influenced bulls, which are half Maine and half Angus, with a focus on maternal calving ease. He is also planning another first: a frozen genetics sale featuring both semen and embryos. “It’s busy, but it’s still pretty enjoyable. I wouldn’t be doing it if I didn’t like it and I keep doing it and doing more of it!” Kord says with a laugh.

HERD HEALTH

Reducing Sickness at Weaning and Beyond Roy Lewis, DVM

Whether you are a purebred or commercial operator, reducing stress from numerous causes and upping protection against disease will go a long way to prevent sickness at or around weaning. The primary sickness is Bovine Respiratory disease (Pneumonia). It is always worth going the extra mile from an animal welfare perspective as well. With the high cost of cattle, the economic losses from even one calf death are huge. We also must be cognizant that calves that develop pneumonia, if treated in time, could make a complete recovery; if too late, chronic cases of pneumonia may be the result. With weaning, a few different methods have been tried, each with some success over hard weaning, which is just removing the calf from the cow. Fenceline weaning, two stage weaning with nose flaps are two that have shown significant benefits. A lot of purebred breeders say that if the calves, and especially the bull calves, are creep-fed at pasture, this makes weaning easier. Anytime we can acclimatize the calves ahead of the weaning event with the feed they will get, or even the water source, is a great thing. Also, if possible, if the pairs can be acclimatized to a pen, it is always better to remove the cows from the calves. Therefore, transportation does not become a big factor in calves becoming sick. In just the last couple of years, a couple of appeasing products have been used in multiple situations to reduce cattle stress. The most 50

recent ones (FerAppease or Cattle Zen) come in a pour on form, and effects last about two weeks. These products have a calming effect on the calves, so they have less bawling and less pacing or walking the fenceline in search of mother. If we can keep our calf’s calmer, it stands to reason they are way less likely to get sick and need antibiotics. We have all heard of the roughly weaned calf that becomes hoarse from bawling incessantly these products greatly reduce that. Also, weaning in inclement weather is a no so watch the weather channel or your weather app on your phone. The big preventative thing is, prior to weaning by a couple of weeks or longer, that calves are vaccinated for the core vaccines, many of which provide prevention against the main viral and bacterial causes of pneumonia. I am going to give my core vaccines and definitely check with your herd veterinarian. Likely most diseases will be the same, but some may be added in certain geographic areas or with exposure to other respiratory pathogens. The vast majority of producers in Western Canada calves would get IBR, BVD PI3, BRSV, Histophilus, Mannheimia and a very multivalent clostridial vaccine. By the multivalent, I mean an 8–10-way clostridial vaccine. Some vaccines may have Pasteurella in the mix as well. I know this seems like a lot, but if the right combinations of vaccines are selected, this is only two shots. Your veterinarian can best advise which vaccines to use. I always say the trade name is not nearly as important as the diseases it protects against. Give vaccines properly, maintain the chain of Charolais Connection • Fall 2026

refrigeration, spread the needles apart and don’t mix up more vaccine than you can give in one hour. Another respiratory disease called mycoplasma is now used a bit more in feedlot cattle. The principle here is getting protection through vaccination from the most common diseases calves may be exposed to post weaning. This will not prevent every case of pneumonia but will reduce either the number or severity of cases you see. Good nutrition goes without saying, and many, especially microminerals, help in the function of the immune system. Poor nutrition leads to a poor immune response. The most critical time is one to two weeks after weaning for respiratory signs developing. This is when observation is critical, and there are now a few monitoring devices on the market, from smart tags to rumen boluses that work on activity, temperature and even rumen motility in some cases. These may be utilized to a greater degree in the future. I am a firm believer that temperature tells us a lot. Also, if one must treat, one can measure the response by retaking the temperature as quickly as three hours later, and if the product works, there will be a response and return to normal. Despite all the preventions, there still may be the odd case with the signs of off-feed depression: ears down, temperature. The earlier one catches, the better the response will be if treated right away. All veterinarians will prescribe different families of antimicrobials at their disposal. There are the phenicols, cephalosporins, ..continued on page 54

CANADIAN CATTLE ASSOCIATION NEWS

CCA President’s Message Tyler Fulton, CCA President

I know that I am not alone in hoping that the worst of the unpredictable and sometimes devastating summer weather is behind us, although the prospect of a long fall and potentially dry and mild winter may bring different but equally difficult challenges. Across the country we have watched in shock and dismay as wildfires and flooding have once again hit cattle producers hard. We are grateful for good warning systems and supports to help evacuate people and livestock safely and efficiently when necessary. The added stresses of extreme weather can take a huge toll on producers, not just financially, but also emotionally and mentally. We don’t talk about this enough as a society in general but there is still a significant amount of stigma in our industry, and I want to stress the importance of self-care and seeking help. If you need mental health support for any reason, please use the resources available:

If you haven’t done so recently, reach out to your friends and neighbours and ask them how they

are doing. If you recognize signs of struggle or think someone may not be coping with their current circumstances, offer support and connect them with these organizations. We need to take care of ourselves and each other like we take care of our cattle. In addition to extreme weather and threats of tariffs, we have seen increased media attention and producer interest toward Business Risk Management programs, especially AgriStability and to a lesser extent Livestock Price Insurance following the summer federal, provincial and territorial agriculture ministers (FPT) meeting and the subsequent Halifax Statement. For years, Canadian Cattle Association Directors have captured the importance of Business Risk Management (BRM) programs in policies that guide CCA’s advocacy efforts. CCA’s position is that we believe that strong government supports are needed to offset emergency events that disrupt trade or otherwise endanger business continuity and security of the beef cattle industry. In addition to extreme weather, producers face pressure and uncertainty with fluctuations in energy costs, supply chain disruptions, and geopolitics. Ministers aim to reach a decision on AgriStability changes for the 2027 program year. While the proposed AgriStability changes are encouraging, we are worried that the biggest inequity facing cattle producers is not seeing as strong of commitment. AgriStability is important across agricultural sectors. Recent changes are a welcome improvement, however, until cattle producers have access to

the same level of support that crop farmers have with crop insurance, there will be a systemic bias for crop production over livestock production. We welcome the increased attention and interest on Business Risk Management, and fall is an opportune time to look more closely at these programs. The cow/calf sector of the cattle industry has not historically been well served by AgriStability, as we spent much of the last 20 years with chronically low or negative margins. Beef farmers and ranchers that have not participated in the program should reconsider, as this sector finally has some profitability to protect with profitability in this sector leading the whole agriculture industry. My column in September issue of Canadian Cattlemen Magazine takes a closer look at what was discussed and where improvement is still necessary. I encourage you to read the column in the magazine or look it up on their website to learn more about the proposed changes and CCA’s concerns. Earlier this year, CCA launched an aggressive campaign to raise awareness about trade negotiations between Canada and Mercosur that could see a massive increase in imports of Mercosur beef. Mercosur is the Southern Common Market (called MERCOSUR for its Spanish initials). It is a South American economic and political trade bloc established in 1991 and comprised of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Increased imports would incentivize beef production on the other side of the world, disincentive cattle production

HERD HEALTH, CONTINUED FROM PAGE 50 tetracyclines, fluroquinolones and macrolides are the main families of antimicrobials that are used against respiratory diseases and listed on their label. I have specifically left out any trade names, as what specifically is used depends on your veterinarian’s prescription and what has been effective before. Other considerations may be slaughter withdrawal or whether the product may even be prescribed in a dart gun, which requires a low dose application. Convenience or dosage size and even syringeability may be more subtle reasons to use a specific product. Make sure the dose is according to the label and close on your weight. A saying I have heard regarding antibiotics is “use as little as possible but as much as

necessary”. Ancillary treatments may be NSAIDs (non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs, antihistamines and, in specific cases, steroids, but again a discussion and SOP from your veterinarian helps. A few antimicrobials (I can think of three) also have NSAIDs mixed in them, so essentially giving both things in one needle. Medication costs, but not nearly as much as mortality or chronic pneumonia developing. If pneumonia is bacterial, there is a good chance it will respond to antibiotics if caught soon enough. Viral causes not so much, and that is where a good vaccination program saves the day and allows the body to develop protection, or the viral pneumonia is not as severe. One never likes to lose a calf,

and especially if a rather sudden death, this is where the value of an autopsy is invaluable. We will be able to tell you if the cause of death is pneumonia and, if need be, do a culture and sensitivity so you know exactly what organism the culprit is and which antibiotic is the best to use. Your veterinarians will have a first and second line of defence. Some pneumonias are mixed bacterial and viral, and that could even be evident in a gross necropsy. Cattlemen know their cattle the best and are still the best to recognize if they are sick. Here’s to a great weaning period, few sicknesses from respiratory disease and continued good prices on both the commercial and purebred side of the cattle business.

CCA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE, CONTINUED FROM PAGE 52 and herd rebuilding in Canada, and would have no impact on the price of beef in Canada. At a time when the federal government is investing in food security, increased trade with Mercosur that would allow increased beef imports does not make sense. Thank you to everyone who visited www.cattle. ca/mercosur and supported our position. At the time of submitting this article, negotiations are ongoing and the campaign continues. Last summer, Alberta Beef Producers formally announced intention to withdraw its

membership from the Canadian Cattle Association, effective July 1, 2026. An interim participation agreement between CCA and ABP was announced in June following motions passed in principle at CCA’s AGM. The bylaw changes were subsequently approved at CCA’s semi-annual meeting in August. At the time of this submission, ABP is working through the process of reviewing its membership in CCA.
