So, it is the middle of April and you haven’t got your bull buying done yet. Don’t worry as the quality in the Cornerstone Bull sale is again very strong with some definite herd sires that will work for the most discriminating purebred or commercial producer in both breeds. The WRAZ program is producing some excellent bulls from calving ease to performance to high maternal that will work for you. The pedigrees are very interesting as well in their offering so have a close look. The Brimner bulls are good haired, big volume bulls that will work at all levels of the industry. The first sons of Custom Made have added top and thickness. Red cows and white bulls have been the Cornerstone of the commercial industry for decades and will continue to be popular from the sale ring to the packing house. Using a quality bull is the first step to herd improvement and they are here in both breeds. Again this year there is a good offering of open Red Angus and Red Angus X Charolais open replacement heifers that would be excellent additions to an existing operation or a great place to start a new herd. As an added bonus, there are 12 good Red Angus cow/calf pairs ready to go to work for you. If Candace or I can be of any assistance before the sale or on sale day, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We would be happy to help you find a bull that is right for your program. Sincerely, Helge & Candace By • By Livestock • Tel 306.584.7937 • Cell 306.536.4261

Welcome to the 2018 Edition of the Cornerstone Bull Sale. First off, I would like to thank you for your support of our program over the past years and l look forward to working with you in the future. The premium that Charcross calves are bringing means more money in your pocket. This year’s pen of Charolais bulls are sound, hairy and stout made. Bred to sire those calves that will bring those premium prices. We strive to raise bulls with moderate birthweights, good performance, as well as strong maternal traits. We use these same genetics in our commercial herd. On 1200 lb black cows, reds to Hereford cows, Charolais bulls just work. Please feel free to call or come to see the bulls in their natural habitat before the sale. Looking forward to seeing you April 21 in Whitewood! ~ Kelly

We teamed up with Jordan Moore, Redvers, purchasing Custom Made out of the stall at Agribition a couple years ago. Extremely impressed with the muscle and capacity in these bulls. Definitely some standouts in the pen.

Cornerstone Bull & Female Sale

14

Welcome to the 10th Annual Cornerstone “More Bang for Your Buck” Bull and Female Sale

As usual I will start my opening comments with the “I” word – INTEGRITY! The offering in this catalogue are backed by programs that you can be confident will be there for you before, during and after the sale. We do our very best to offer sound breeding animals for your program with a good return on investment. That’s our job – we are here to help! Please do not hesitate to call if any concerns arise or if we can help in any way. In my way of thinking, we are all in this together. I believe the Canadian cattle industry is at a crossroads. We have a strong set of industry leaders paving the way to profitable times for the foreseeable future if we as producers are willing to change with the times. I have attended the industry conferences with great appreciation for all that our industry partners are doing to make sure we have a great decade ahead of us as cattle producers. Things like the current NAFTA negotiations and the long awaited CPTPP agreement that will reduce tariffs and open pre-existing markets that are not currently available to Canada for beef and beef products as well. Our industry leaders have come together on many occasions to put their differences aside and sit together at the table for the betterment of our industry. THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU FROM LOCAL BOARDS TO INDUSTRY BOARDS TO GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS WHO SIT ON THESE BOARDS AND TAKE TIME AWAY FROM YOUR FAMILIES AND YOUR OPERATION ON BEHALF OF ALL CATTLE PRODUCERS FOR THE BETTERMENT OF THE CANADIAN BEEF INDUSTRY – WE REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR TIME AND EFFORT! I would also like to mention the leadership that a few key industry players have shown. McDonald’s started the ball rolling a couple years back with their Canadian Beef sustainability project which followed almost 9000 head throughout the supply chain and now Cargill has announced a year-long Beef Sustainability pilot project with the aim to test the

systems that can show consumers the exact path that their beef followed from your ranch to their plate! Fellow cattlemen/ladies this is TRACEABILITY and I do not believe it is going away anytime soon. We have all complained about the RFID tag and the cost that has been downloaded onto us as producers, but we are legally obligated to put the tags in and their truly is a number of reasons behind tagging our cattle with the less than perfect RFID tag. We are all about to find out in the coming year or two what the true value of the RFID tag is. We will find out whether their value is in their ability to provide traceability to maintain or possibly expand upon the markets we currently have or possibly opening new markets for our beef and beef products. THIS IS WHERE WE AS PRODUCERS HAVE A JOB TO DO TO HELP OUR INDUSTRY TO HELP OURSELVES. Some of the companies that have stepped up to help achieve results in Cargill’s pilot project are: McDonalds Canada, Loblaws, Cara Operations – Swiss Chalet. As I understand it they have come forward together with funding to perhaps even make it worth our time as producers to get signed up with BIXS, VBP Plus and tag our calves with the proper RFID tag then follow the verified supply chain to meet the traceability requirements for this Cargill pilot project. In my mind it is pretty simple – we have to tag them so why not tag them with a tag that gives you every option out there to add value? With the risk of sounding a little bias as a Red Angus breeder but with the utmost respect for all breeds why wouldn’t we as producers tag all the calves that we can with the only tag that can meet the required industry traceability requirements as well as the option to enter a branded Angus beef market which could add even more value to that carcass? That tag would be an Angus RFID tag – it meets the same requirements as every other RFID tag in the industry as well as certifying that the animal that bears that tag

15

Cornerstone Bull & Female Sale

has at least 50% male or female Angus influence. The Angus tag meets all the requirements that every other RFID tag does plus if the carcass meets specs it could also be eligible to enter the existing Branded Angus Beef market where demand from the companies like McDonald’s, WalMart, Loblaws, Swiss Chalet and other branded beef programs currently outstrips supply – this to me does not seem like a complex decision. This does not even have to be about Angus unless you want it to be. To me it just makes good business/marketing sense for any animal that can meet the requirement and possibly add value to that carcass. Until recently CAB – Certified Angus Beef (US program owned by the American Black Angus Association) was the primary and highly successful branded Angus Beef program and black hided cattle were the only cattle eligible. The CAA Angus tag now opens a brand new door to a branded Angus Beef program without the requirement to be black in color. I see no valid reason why producers would not jump all over this opportunity for many crossbred calves throughout the beef industry. These tags are competitively priced and readily available in person or mailed right to your mailbox a lot quicker than you can imagine. All of the above also ties in nicely once you are registered with VBP Plus and BIXS to enable verification of Traceability along the chain from the pasture to the packer to the plate. If your operation is signed up with BIXS and VBP verified, then the feedlot that feeds your cattle is also VBP verified followed by slaughter at a Verified packing plant then that tag owner would be eligible for a credit that has a value for taking the time to get signed up for these programs that are all part of Canadian Beef Traceability and the future of markets in OUR industry. Yes it is OUR BEEF INDUSTRY and now it is OUR turn as producers to step up and help our own industry and do what is required to put in place properly tagged animals for the markets that already exist – I would suggest if Canadian producers are not willing to take the steps the industry requires to provide the product to fill these already existing markets those that supply the markets will eventually source it somewhere else. There is a huge shortfall of tagged calves that reach the kill floor with pasture to plate traceability intact as well as Angus tagged calves for the current branded programs. We all have to tag them so why not tag them Angus if your calves meet the requirements. Producers the ball is in our court! There is an opportunity staring us right square in the eye so let’s not miss it. CAA Business Development Representative Bob Toner will be in attendance to answer any questions sale day and he will have CAA RFID tags with him. Now that I have taken up all your time with the above I will keep it short. These bulls in the WRAZ offering come from a very sound group of females. Culling of the herd has been ruthless for the past ten years to the point that I am very confident to say the foot and udder quality is very high within the herd so I will not be repeating

this in my footnotes. The sires are very fertile and strong footed with lots of hair and capacity. Sire selection depends heavily on a very strong female with a proven production record. We hope to see you sale day and you are invited to join us Saturday April 7 for our annual open house/customer appreciation day. This is a great opportunity to see the whole program and evaluate the bulls ahead of time. Come any time after 1 PM and stay as long as you like. We would be pleased to show you our program as well as welcome you to some good old fashion WRAZ hospitality. WRAZ follows a whole herd health program under the advice of Dr. Henry McCarthy of Wawota Veterinary Service. The females are vaccinated following the BoviGold protocol that will ensure Fetal Protection from BVD as well as a BVD free herd status. The bulls are vaccinated with BoviGold One-shot and Ultrabac 7 in spring followed by a booster in the fall roughly 3 weeks before weaning. Dr. Henry McCarthy also does our Breeding Soundness Evaluations and unless otherwise stated the bulls will have passed a semen test prior to sale day. Please do not hesitate to call me pretty much any time if you would like assistance selecting a bull. We also have quality commercial females on offer – once again quality open females and new this year a few commercial pairs. Take care! Phil

Unfortunately we lost Rider Pride last spring. The herd bulls decided to gang up on him as the spring testosterone levels rose and they broke a fore rib. We only found it after an autopsy to find cause of death. He did a great job of leaving behind moderate, very efficient, hairy females that milk well and make great mothers. He started as a calving ease sire for us and graduated to the cows when he was physically too big. Co-owned with Baker Red Angus.

His dam is dark red and worthy to be the dam of a herd sire in any herd. I would certainly use him in our program. 60 lbs at birth and a Sept 5 weight of 781, which equates to an Adj WW of 785 with a weaning ratio of 105. Retaining a 1/3 semen interest.

When we chose 102C his dam, grand dam and great grand dam were all still in the Bar E-L herd producing so I had a good look at feet and udders. I have since been to Bess 111Y’s new home at Allison Farms and I still appreciate her just as much if not more than I did before. The Big Rock udders are second to none with plenty of milk. He typically leaves them dark red with a great coat of long hair. His EPDs will become better with time as he was an aged sire before there were any registered progeny. With a Sept 6 weight of 729 this is where EPD’s fall flat on their face in my opinion. His March 12 birth date equates to his Sept 6 weight being 147 days to reach 729 lbs – that yields a 4.07 lbs weight per day of age for a calving ease bull on grass and mothers milk! If that’s what a +39 WW and a +60 YW equates into then I will take a carload of them!! Folks please use EPDs as a tool once you have selected a few bulls with your eye first.

One of the key factors in my selection of a new herd sire is his dam. She has recently been designated as a CAA Premier dam for her impressive production with 3 of her 5 progeny designated as Grand. Overdrive was a member of our pen of 3 at Agribition. Although he was almost a month younger he weighed right up there with his pen mates. There is a tremendous amount of growth and general desirable traits in this guy with a moderate 92 lb BW. His Sept 5 weight was 762 but being a March calf his Adj WW is a very impressive 867 lbs. (WPDA 4.28 lbs). High Capacity is a proven red calving ease bull but coupled with this powerful black red carrier JJL Female he came into this world at 100 lbs. It would not at all surprise me if his progeny have less BW than he does but I definitely need to recommend you use him on cows. High Capacity females are awesome and out of this power cow his daughters will also be awesome.

Mulberry is the sire that is hard to beat for all round solid progeny. His daughters are excellent-known for their great udder quality and his sons generally have lots of shape and muscle expression. I find the Mulberry progeny to be well above average at feed conversion. They are very easy fleshing cattle. You won’t go wrong with progeny of Mulberry.

Here is an ET son of Serebl 95N sired by the sire that does no wrong – Mulberry 26P. He had a very solid 685 lb weaning weight which equates to 4 lbs a day – not bad for a being raised by a recip! This combination of genetics should sire moderate BW progeny that grow like crazy. Serebl generally has light BW progeny and Mulberry has occasionally been used on heifers. You have all heard my Serebl speech before so I will leave it at that. I would highly recommend this guy for making females.

Guest Consignor: Red Ember Ranch I truly believe in the genetics being offered here and feel privileged to be welcomed back to the Cornerstone sale for a second year. I would like to thank everyone for their support and an extra thanks to WRAZ and BRIMNER for allowing room for me in such a quality offering. I stand behind these bulls and will be available to help anytime, especially if the unforeseen arises. 2017 was a really exciting calving year for me. All the calves were coming off an entirely new line up of herd sires. Forty five days into calving I had 80% bull calves. The new bulls absolutely came through for me and by weaning, I had an incredible group of calves filling up the pens, especially the bull pen. Almost three times the number I intended to develop this season. I had to cut back so the remaining bulls have already been selected as the best of the best. This year I am offering a calving ease bull and a performance bull. They are available for viewing, along side the whole herd, at Red Ember Ranch located 3 miles south and 4 miles west of Kisbey, SK. You are welcome for a tour anytime and I will provide you any information I can. Please feel free to call with any questions. Thanks for your interest, cheers!

RED JAS PISTON 50A RED EMBER CONTESSA 42C RED JAS CONTESSA 141A

Slade 20E is the first calf off a heifer, and she was off a JAS heifer purchased through the Keystone sale. He remarkably weaned at 804 lb! Take a look at this fella and just try to remember he's actually the product of not one, but two consecutive first tries. For even more maternal goodness see 40X on the top side, she has had 4 bull calves, three of whom have sold to purebred operations, flip over to lot 59 to check out her fourth. You may recognize him as a member of Wraz's Agribition show pen. Slade is a great example of the Ghost Rider 111C calf group. As it was 111Cs first round of breeding, I put him out with the most variety I could provide and the next summer every one of his calves was recognizable from a distance for their width and extra performance. Slade 20E is all kinds of good! Use him on cows to produce replacement heifers or to add performance.

The Roughrider sire on the top side and Hawkness mgs on the bottom side both worked so well for me, I wish I'd been able to retain more of them in my herd. His dam, 11A is an exceptional moderate framed cow. I have kept all her calves. Maternal granddam 80X is a Wraz cow I purchased through the Touch of Class sale who also has a top bull in the pen this year. This is one of the main cow families I've built my herd around. There is calving ease all over 13E and, even in a pasture of power bulls this summer, he caught my eye over and over. I absolutely recommend this bull for use in the heifer pen!
