Unique Venues – March Event The Heartland PCMA Programs Committee organized two successful unique venue events held in both Kansas City and St. Louis in March.  The Kansas City program showcased several venues along Main Street to include Level 5 (3829 Main Street), Midland Theater, AMC Main Street Theater, which is AMC’s flagship theater.  A reception was held at Hobbs Building, hosted by Feasts of Fancy to finish the tour. The Kansas City event drew several attendees from K-State’s hospitality program.  Our St. Louis program highlighted several locations in the unique Central West End neighborhood.  Many thanks to our venues in both cities who participated, as well as Agenda Kansas City & Destination St. Louis for the sponsorship of venue transportation.

A HUGE Thank you to Tyler Adkins, Agenda: KC for organizing the event and to Agenda: KC for providing transportation in Kansas City and Destination St. Louis for providing venue transportation in St. Louis!

Emerging Leaders Update The Emerging Leaders Committee ended 2009 with a bang! We had a record setting student segment that attended the November ‘State of the Industry’ meeting in downtown Kansas City. We also heard from both the students and chapter members that the newly created Mentor Program, was a huge success. We are working currently on how to develop the program even further, details to come. During last month’s Unique Venue’s program, 7 KSU students attended and from what we heard, enjoyed the variety of venue’s they were able to tour. “I thought the experience was very interesting! It allowed us, as students, to see venues that professionals in our industry are currently using for various events. We were also able to gain concrete information about each venue like pricing, capacity and the different purposes each

venue could serve. As an added benefit, we were able to interact with industry professionals throughout the day!” – Amy Davidson, KSU. Another student had this to say, “The unique event venue tour was an incredible opportunity for my fellow students and me. We were able to experience things we normally would not be able to experience. The Heartland Chapter is wonderful at providing opportunities for students to learn and network. The tour made me even more excited to be a part of this industry.” – Lyndsay Coad, KSU. The 7 students that attended are members of the newly created PCMA K-State Student Chapter. Currently they have 15 students signed up and have created their board. They meet twice monthly and are looking for opportunities to volunteer in the community and have industry professionals visit and speak to the group. Heartland Chapter in Des Moines for April Program By Ronda Vaughn, Optimist International

The recent PCMA educational event held in Des Moines, Iowa April 15-16 was educational and FUN! There were 25 planners and 19 suppliers from IA, NE, MN, MO and KS networking at the event. A huge thank you goes out to the Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau for their overwhelming financial support and coordination of this extremely well organized event sponsored also by the Des Moines Event Center, the Holiday Inn Downtown the Des Moines Marriott, The Embassy Suites and the Renaissance Savery Hotel. Overall, the program was lively and creative affording the attendees many opportunities in which to be engaged. The best part was we kept moving and when we did stop to sit we enjoyed a lively panel discussion that kept everyone interested. The panel discussed Creative Ways to Manage Attrition with the following speakers:

Facilitator: - Mike Rowan, 2010 PCMA Heartland Chapter Secretary; Strategic Account Manager, Experient

Panel: - Samuel J. Erkonen, Esq. Attorney and Partner, Howe & Hutton, Ltd. in Chicago - Missy Johnson, CMP, Manager, Meeting Services, American Academy of Family Physicians - Andrea Tyler, CMP, Director of Market Strategy, Iowa/Nebraska Marriott Hotels

The Thursday lunch program Negotiating Your Way Through the Recovery with speaker Samuel J. Erkonen, Esq. Howe & Hutton, Ltd kept everyone intrigued with pointers on how to cover your association’s interests and assets by way of hotel contracts and negotiations. Thank you, thank you, thank you to the hotels and restaurants that participated in the Dine -Around Thursday evening - It was so much fun! We went to a different location for each course, split into groups and each group had the opportunity to create a video doing a taste test with the hotel chef or banquet staff. We then were able to view our videos at the Friday morning training session before going on to the city tour and wine tasting. It was the perfect finale to a wonderful event! Thank you to our PCMA Heartland Chapter Programs Committee and our friend, Vicki Comegys and her staff from the Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau! They’ve got the kind of hospitality any group will appreciate!

Around the Industry & Region Good Signs for Economic Recovery Marriott International has posted a 16 percent increase in business traveler guests in North America during the 1st Quarter 2010 according to the Dow Jones Newswire. Transient demand also remained strong.

Other Industry Indicators The U.S. hotel industry posted improvements in two out of three key performance measurements during March 2010, according to data from STR.

In year-over-year measurements, the industry’s occupancy was up 5.9 percent to 57.9 percent. Average daily rate dropped 2.0 percent to finish the month at US$97.90. Revenue per available room for the month increased 3.8 percent to finish at US$56.67.

Kansas City Kansas City’s Convention Center Hotel Steering Committee voted unanimously to select the 1.96-acre site at the northwest corner of 14th Street and Baltimore Avenue as the site for a proposed 1,000-room convention headquarters hotel. The site is under contract by a partnership led by developer Ron Jury, who proposes a $285 million complex incorporating the historic Power & Light Building.

Tulsa Facilities & Destinations magazine awarded the Tulsa Convention Center its Prime Site Award after a $52 million addition to the Tulsa Convention Center was unveiled on January 12, 2010. An 83,000 square foot addition now raises the center to approximately 310,000 square feet.  This ballroom is the largest ballroom in Oklahoma.

Little Rock The Little Rock Convention & Visitors Bureau recently took over management of the Riverfest Amphitheatre. The Bureau is currently undertaking a review of the downtown venue’s rents as well as the city’s past agreements to offer the space for free to a select few.
