Persistence. It’s in the mission: to be dedicated to the success of Scouts Canada by realizing individual potential through leadership and management training. It’s in the people: high-achieving individuals striving to realize, and maximize, their own potential in their constant pursuit of excellence. It’s in our values: to overcome challenges through bold inquiries and actions with passion, excellence, support, integrity and trust. It’s in our development: to set goals and a viable action plan, to follow through with them and emerge succeeding. It’s in our teams: to remain dedicated with integrity and passion in support of our root cause. It’s in the motto, “service”: a call to kind-hearted volunteering, to give back to a community that has given us so much. It’s in the quality of our work: to produce products of excellence in everything that we set out to do.

And this could all be in you.

Rovering to Success. As leaders of tomorrow, we are part of a personal development program for ages 18 to 26 to ensure that we are as prepared as possible to conquer the challenges in this brave new world. We focus on the personal growth of individuals, and we encourage individuals to gain experience through service opportunities in our community and within Scouts Canada. We are students and professionals in our daily lives, but we are also first and foremost volunteers and scouts in support of the values of Scouting within the lives of youths. We have become the largest Rover Scout Group in all of Canada by attracting many like-minded individuals who thrive in a diverse and supportive environment. As volunteers, what we gain is invaluable life skills. Do you share our vision? We invite you to see how we match your vision of what leadership and management training can be like.

“After taking a year of military training, I was surprised to learn how many of the things we teach in the Group, such as project management, public speaking and strategic planning, were directly applicable to the military. Among the many things that I’ve learned throughout the years, the lesson that has always stuck with me is one of leadership.” Eric Cheung Alumni Crew Advisor Lieutenant (4 Engineer Support Regiment) - Canadian Army

Inventing the Future of Scouting Scouting is no longer just an outdoor-based activity targeted at youth, and our group is a prime example of that. Aside from outdoor experiences, our members benefit from our business-like environment and leadership training. With such a quality program that we offer, our members are constantly encouraged to become tomorrow’s community leaders.

Welcome Aboard We offer a premier personal development program for young adults aged 18 to 26-years-old in Metro Vancouver, and we are committed to contributing to the success of Scouts Canada through leadership and management training of members in our group.

What to Expect The first thing you will notice when you join our Rover Scout Group is how your fellow members will strive to realize their individual potential through the many meaningful and striking projects that we create. To date, we have over 80 Rover Scouts in our group and more than 12 Advisors who guide us in our undertakings, making us the largest Rover Scout Group in all of Canada - and we are still growing year after year!

Within our Group, we have teams that overlook many different projects, with at least one that is sure to match your interests. On the learning side of the spectrum, we offer workshops and seminars, such as Project Management Training, résumé workshops and study skills workshops that are designed with our diverse population of members in mind. If you are looking for a team that is in the constant pursuit of service and selfimprovement, look no further - we are confident that the 180th Pacific Coast Scout Group will be right match for you.

Project Management Runs in Our Blood “Trying to manage a project without project management is like trying to play a football game without a game plan.” - Anonymous

In today’s fast-paced world, the ability to stay organized and demonstrate leadership in a team setting is becoming increasingly important. That is why our program is focused on developing individual leadership and project management skills.

Measuring Our Success How do we know our program is working? Currently, our group has over 80 Rover Scouts and alumni with the highest retention rate across all Rover groups in Canada.

Project Management Training Our program provides workshops that teach individuals the foundations of effective project management as well as being an effective leader. Our group also believes in “learning by doing”; that is why in addition to workshops, we offer many projects - big or small - in which our members can participate in to hone and refine their teamwork, leadership and management skills. We are committed to providing a safe environment in which our members can practice these skills prior to carrying out their endeavours.

Many of our Rover Scouts have jobs with top Canadian employers who affirms that our program has trained them to be successful at their job. The skills that these Rover Scouts learn are not only applicable in their professional lives - many of our Rovers apply these soft skills developed from within our program in all of their endeavours.

“I believe in Scouting, and I believe in the education of youths. That’s why I spent over 40 years volunteering as a Scout leader. The 180th Pacific Coast Scout Group was formed to train young adults how to become the leaders of tomorrow, so they may lead the world of tomorrow.” John S.L. Chow Group Commissioner & Head Advisor Vice-President, TELUS International (retired)

“By having the opportunity to step outside my comfort zone within our group’s safe learning environment, I gained transferable skills and experiences that I was able to bring to work. From people management to strategic thinking to project execution, so much of what I did in the Crew contributed to my success.” Brandon Ma Alumni Crew Advisor, Past President (2012) Senior Manager (Audit), KPMG

Personal Development Planning

Amazing Guest Speakers

Personal development planning is the process of creating a viable action plan based on personal awareness, values, reflection, goal-setting, and planning for personal development within the context of a career, education, or purely for self-improvement.

Over the years, we have been fortunate enough to have a variety of best-in-class professionals from within our community speak to us about what it takes to be successful. Our wide range of guest speakers from the past have included a former VP of IBM Canada, a partner from KPMG, an oral surgeon, and a best-selling author from Smart Cookies, just to name a few.

Our group focuses heavily on tailored opportunities for the personal development of each member. Upon your acceptance into the group, we will pair you up with a suitable mentor who will guide you in the creation of your own Personal Development Plan to help you reach your goals. Your mentor will be able to offer you advice in reaching your goals by discussing your personal development plan with you. Your mentor’s role in your personal development planning is to hold you accountable to yourself, to offer you guidance and advice, and to challenge you to the next level.

Hearing about other people’s success can inspire and empower us in our own endeavours. Our group continually tries to invite in new guest speakers to impart their knowledge and experience on our members.

Contributing to the Success of Scouting “The ‘encouraging promise’ lies in the fact that the hundreds of thousands of boys and girls who are learning our ideals today will be fathers and mothers of millions in the near future... You will do well to keep your eyes open, in your turn, for worthy successors to who you can, with confidence, hand the torch. Don’t let it become a salaried organization: keep it a voluntary movement of patriotic service.” - Robert Baden-Powell

Fostering our Future

Getting Involved

To “contribute to the success of Scouts Canada”; a mission statement that is deeply rooted in our group’s culture and beliefs.

Our group is fortunate enough to be directly involved with the operation of two local Scout Groups in the Lower Mainland - one in downtown Vancouver (Yaletown) and the other in Richmond (Terra Nova).

For many generations, volunteers in Scouting have positively contributed to the experience of youths who participate in the program. But what can we do as a group to continue adding to the success of Scouts Canada? Many of our members actively take part in being youth leaders amongst local Scout groups. There is nothing more rewarding and satisfying than watching youths grow up to become committed and responsible members of society. As a group, we intend to focus on the success of the Scouting program and continue to innovate ways to further increase the joys and pride of being a member of Scouting.

We encourage all our members to participate in local Scout Groups as youth leaders. There are many opportunities for individuals like yourself to get involved with Scout groups around the Lower Mainland and see what you can do as a volunteer - and perhaps seeing what being a volunteer can do for you.

“I can confidently say that through both the tough learning stages and relieved moments of success, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with the 180th Pacific Coast Scout Group. Personal Development Through Community Service “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.“ - Mahatma Gandhi

The premise of scouting is to do a good turn daily. As members of scouting, we have made the commitment of giving back to our communities whenever we can. The Scout Promise our members take includes the phrase “to help other people at all times”, which is a constant reminder to always be of service to others.

Offering Our Helping Hands Scouts Canada’s motto for Rover Scouts is “Service” and one of our group values is “Support” - not necessarily just service and support to Scouting itself, but also to others in the community. The feeling of knowing that we are contributing to the good of society by donating our time and efforts, and the end result of seeing how we made a difference makes every moment worthwhile. That is one reason why we participate in community service projects every year; to positively contribute back to a community that has given us so much.

Going Far and Wide for, Service, Cultural Exchange and Personal Development “It’s never the destination, but the journey. We believe that these trips are the best way to cement a group of people into a cohesive productive team, and we have the proof of that belief. Each trip has a different purpose and story. “ - pccrovers.com

International Service Projects

What Was Our Impact?

Every twelve to eighteen months, our group busies itself with excruciatingly long hours preparing for an international service project overseas to a foreign country.

China, 2008

The hard work in the process of preparing will require you to remain persistent, but in the end, the only feedback we hear from our members is that “it was totally worth it.” The experience of teamwork and the accomplishments that you achieve, lessons learned, friends and memories made, both personally and with the group, will most likely make it into your life’s highlight reels - because yes, that is how memorable each international service project is.

The opportunity to go overseas Be it humanitarian work, leadership training or management workshops, on every trip, our members make an impact by leaving the world a better place than it was found. As a bonus, while doing so, our members create their own epic adventures along the way. Ask any member who has attended an international service project, and be prepared to listen to their unique and amazing stories.

“A rapidly evolving organization is the perfect environment to learn and grow as a person. In the past two years of being a part of this group, I’ve made some great friends and many memories, including an unforgettable trip to China for an international service project. The “Play Hard” in “Work Hard, Play Hard” “Work hard for what you want... Play hard with what you have...“ - Tim Walters

We operate in a busy, business-like environment, but that doesn’t mean we can’t connect with our Scouting roots and let loose of ourselves. In this Rover Scout Group, we do more than just personal development, project management training and community service projects. We plan amazing activities with fun twists to release the inner youthful spirit in us, while spending time to learn leadership, teamwork, and Scouting skills after all, we are still a Scout group!

Building Skills One Activity at a Time We usually have social dinners at the end of each monthly meeting for us to take off our proverbial Rover hats and don our Social Butterfly hats so we can kick back, relax, and catch up with what our peers are up to. We have at least one camp per year together as a group to build on our leadership and teamwork skills, and they always have a fun theme attached to them that allows us to be competitively youthful again. Asides for camping, we also do other fun, teambuilding events around the community.

On the Scouting end of the spectrum, we occasionally have weekend outdoor activities, such as hikes, mountaineering exercises, snowshoeing, and outdoor camping opportunities. Who said learning these important life skills can’t be fun? With all of these in mind, the mantra, “work hard, play hard” undoubtedly embodies our spirit perfectly.

“Because of this program, I have gone from a big idea dreamer to an achiever. The experiences from this program have honed my abilities to focus on what is truly important and to effectively get done what is needed to get results as a team and individual. It is not just a few lessons, or reading some texts about theory. It is total immersion into real world projects with support, guidance and intellectual rigour grounded in reality. Nicholas Pearson Alumni Crew Advisor
