I would like to say a special “Thank You” to several important people within the PCBA. First, to Bill Branham for all of the arduous tasks that he took on during 2010. There were several very difficult decisions that had to be made. This coupled with the troubling economic conditions, shook our organization to its core. Change is not something that is easily dealt with, but he Roger Atherton accepted the challenge and forged his way through. The PCBA Counter Effects by Roger staff (Stephanie, Pat and Anne) also stepped up to the plate. They met the challenges head on and persistently strove for improvement. It was a year of growth for all in every aspect of the word. There have been long hours, emotionally charged situations and days when they thought it was all in vain, but they never gave up. I would also like to thank the active members of the association, its past President’s and those that have dedicated so much of their personal time to aid in leading us. At last, and maybe most important of all, those “die-hard” members that are willing to help in any way needed. We must all remember that this is a volunteer organization. Rather than condemning the organization for the things that you would like to see done differently, offer to join a committee and actively help us make the PCBA an even better place for all of its members. With your help, we can ensure that we create an environment that is effective for all of its members. During the past 10 years, I can, without a doubt, say that the organization has benefited me and that increased involvement has led to more contacts over the years. As an Associate Member, understanding that there are numerous “competitors” in every field, I quickly realized that it is the relationships that you form that set you apart from others. Participating in sponsored functions, offering to help and most importantly of all, getting (and staying) involved. It is important to realize that partnerships aren’t formed by simply joining an organization. They are developed through involvement and are much more loyal and appreciated when you have to work for it. After all, when you select business partners within your own companies, aren’t you more apt to reach out to the people that you know something about?

2011 is showing signs of becoming a much better year for all of us. There are a number of events being planned during the months ahead that are geared toward providing you with opportunities to help grow your business as well as several that will enable you to involve family and friends. As your President, it will be my goal to continue the forward momentum of the PCBA. The help and support of our members is crucial in my ability to meet that goal. Let’s work together to make 2011 one of the best!

It seems like yesterday that I was writing my first article for our blueprint publication. As I recall, we began our year facing some tough challenges, both here locally and at the state level. Our industry was in a recession and our economy was getting worse by the month. My goal was to do everything possible to accomplish our key tasks, to achieve the mission and vision of our organization and provide our members with quality services.
2010 Award and Installation Dinner On December 7th, the Polk County Builders Association named the associations 2010 Builder of The Year, the 2010 Associate of the Year, the Rookie of the Year and the Volunteer of the Year. In addition, Marc Boney of Twelve Oaks Homes was recognized for being inducted into the Florida Home Builders Association Hall of Fame in 2010. Robert Harper, who is a past President of the FHBA and chairman of the Housing Hall of Fame Committee at FHBA, conducted an induction ceremony for local members honoring Marc. In coming President, Roger Atherton was sworn in as President for 2011. Outgoing President was Bill Branham of Branham Realty and Development. The Builder of the Year was Chuck Hunt of Hunt Construction of Central Florida. Associate of the Year was Pat Spalding of Central Florida Gas. Both of these individuals and been awarded this honor by PCBA in the past, so it was the second time around for both of them! The Rookie of the Year was Lucas Martin, of Adams Homes of Northwest Florida, and Donna Casey, of Hickman Homes, was named Volunteer of the Year. Big Spike of Recruitment Insurance- Dennis Hollingsworth, Mulling Insurance.
As you know, our accomplishments were many. From lobbying to prevent the mandatory fire sprinklers in single family homes, to our recent moratorium on impact fees here in Polk County. PCBA has worked very hard on issues that have had a direct impact on our industry and to promote new businesses to our county. These accomplishments were not done by one person, but were done by the dedication and efforts of many. It would take a year to name all the members who have contributed so much to our mission. And I sincerely thank those who have worked so hard to keep PCBA on the right path and going in the right direction. Bill Branham Branham Construction
Now, it is with great personal pleasure to see Roger Atherton elected as our new 2011 President. He is not only a superbly talented individual, but a man of seemingly endless resources, energetic and well-organized, a wonderful colleague. I am confident that he will make a first-class president; congratulations to both Roger and the newly elected officers. I would like to encourage all of our members to support our next President, Roger Atherton and help him lead PCBA towards a stronger tomorrow. As you know, time does not stand still for any of us, and my term as president of the PCBA draws to a close. It has been one of both challenge and immense reward - a year I will remember forever. It is humbling to have received the opportunity to play a role in guiding this great association. For me, it has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your president. As I reflect on this past year, it is a reminder of the respect and admiration I have for our staff and our member volunteers. I want to thank all the staff for their hard work, dedication, and their enthusiasm. I certainly have a new appreciation of how hard Stephanie, Anne, and Pat have worked over this past year. PCBA is thriving due to the professional and dedicated staff and its’ volunteers that make sure the association is continually improving and stretching our capabilities.
Big Spike of Recruitment Builder - Mark Hulbert of Hulbert Homes. I also want to thank the committees, committee chairs and all the sponsors who have given so much to our organization. Your dedication and support is greatly appreciated.
Big Spike of Recruitment Associate - Barbie Taylor, Lakeland Electric Company. Big Spike of Retention Builder- Greg Masters, Southern Homes.
Finally, I want to offer the Board of Directors my deepest gratification and sincerest thanks for the leadership and the support you extended me throughout this year. I know we’ve had to make some tough decisions, all of which has proven to make PCBA wiser and stronger. PCBA never lost its direction or goals because of your devoted time and efforts. I know that with this board and its newly elected officers, PCBA will continue to achieve its goals for 2011.
Big Spike of Retention Associate - Barbie Taylor, Lakeland Electric Company. New officers that were installed were Rebie Allen of BB&T Bank, Associate Vice President, Sean Harper, Harper Realty & Development, President Elect, and Brian Walsh of Highland Homes, Builder Vice President.
In closing, at this time of year, please remember those who mean so much to you. Thank Him for the things we have and the things we don’t have. And may God continue to bless your family, and our country.
Numerous Home of the Year Awards, Spike Awards, and Service Recognition Awards were also awarded. Merry Christmas
In addition to Roger Atherton, being installed as the next President, the Board of Directors was also sworn in for the coming year. New board members are Duane McQuillian of Duane McQuillian Construction, Greg Sanoba, Attorney, Lucas Martin, Adams Homes of Northwest Florida. As a bonus, the Ridge Professional Group provided a FREE photographer to take portrait quality photos. Mali Rafats was our photographer for the evening. Everyone enjoyed an evening of good food, good friends and good music! Music was provided by Jack in the Box!

December 2010 The building industry received an early Christmas gift on December 1st when the Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously to extend a moratorium on impact fees for 18 months. All impact fees except for School Impact Fees will remain at $0 until July 31, 2012. Brian Walsh
This was a HUGE win for our industry. The PCBA worked diligently to help secure this outcome. This truly exhibits how your membership dues benefit all of our members. Without your dues, we would not have the staff or committees to organize specific lobbying groups to help our industry. This single action by our County Commissioners will make us more competitive with surrounding Counties and will surely generate new construction jobs within Polk County. These additional jobs will help lead a desperately needed economic recovery. This is not the end of all ends, but this is a great first step in our journey. Please take the time to thank the Governmental Affairs Committee Members and Staff for their dedication on this project. Additionally, be sure to communicate our victory to all our members and encourage non-members to join. The benefits provided by this reduction in fees far exceed the price of membership. During these economically difficult times, it is more important than ever to maintain your membership with the PCBA. Without a strong membership, we will not have the Staff or committees to win these battles, and our industry will continue to struggle. Take this victory and use it in your recruiting efforts.

The Polk County Builders Association Foundation recently held the first Scavenger Hunt Rally on Saturday November 6th. Together with a group of friends, a car and a digital camera, participants were given a list of over 400 photo opportunities to choose from. Each photo opportunity had a point value assigned to it, the team that accumulated the most points and came back within the required time frame won the First Place trophy. When they returned to their starting point at Regal Chevrolet, they were treated to a delicious buffet from Julianne’s Fine Dining and enjoyed the music of Brown’s Sounds. The real entertainment of the evening was watching the slide show of photos from the teams. Most of the participants started out not knowing what to expect but were encouraged to participate by event chair Jack Strollo of Broadway Real Estate. Magnify Credit Union the 2010 Platinum Sponsor for the event entered four teams in the event and had this to say, “We were excited to be a title sponsor this year and look forward to an even more successful event next year stated John Santarpia, President/CEO of Magnify Credit Union.”
The team from Natural Energy Air, a Placement Sponsor scored over 800 points and managed to bring in the bonus item of a cocktail umbrella to take the First Place trophy. As we prepare to celebrate Christmas and enjoy the Holiday Season with our families, I would like to thank everyone for their continued support of the Builder Liaison Committee. Our committee is designed to provide an open line of communication amongst our members and building officials. We discuss items of concern for both parties and address issues that may affect you as a builder. We encourage new and present members to join us at our next meeting scheduled for February 3rd., and we will continue holding our meeting on a quarterly basis. If you have a topic for discussion or would like to actively participate in the committee as a co-chair please contact Stephanie Hutton. Merry Christmas, David Adams Chairman of the Builders Liaison Committee 14

Enthusiasm and energy is what this associate brings to each event and committee she serves on. Always the first one to get involved and sponsor and event or decorate or perhaps dance her way onto the stage, Pat is always there.
We are pleased to present to Pat Spalding, the Associate of the Year award. Throughout the year Pat has been involved in or sponsored both the spring and fall golf tournaments, the Gift Basket Bonanza, in September she attended the Retention Boot Camp in Orlando along with Roger Atherton, Rebie Allen and PCBA Staff, Stephanie Hutton, Anne Hough and Pat Edleman. Sporting Clays was fortunate to have Central Florida Gas as the Big Gun Sponsor and Pat was there serving hamburgers and helping in so many ways. At the Scavenger Hunt she chaired the decorating committee and they did a super job. For 2011 Pat has agreed to chair the Spike Club and is coordinating a Spike Trip in early 2012 to reward them for their efforts in membership and retention.
Congratulations again to Associate of the Year Pat Spalding, Central Florida Gas.

It’s a new year again and the Foundation is gearing up for another successful year. I have served on the Foundation for five years and now have the honor to serve as your Foundation President for this New Year. Since it’s inception our Foundation has had many successes ranging from assisting in the construction of a home to service handicapped children to making donations to students and other organizations that well exceed $100,000.00. We are always looking for new board members to help us with the many tasks we have on our agenda for this year. We will be continuing the Blueprint competition with the public schools and our Future Builders of America (FBA). Each of these commitments requires a lot of work and money in order to keep the high standards our previous Trustee Board has established. Please consider sponsoring a student to allow them to attend Leadership Camp in March 2011. $100 can make a world of difference to these students. If you would like to be part of our team please call or email me at 863-370-9600 or Chuckhuntconstructioninc@verizon.net This is for the betterment of our association and our community. Sincerely,
Chuck Chuck Hunt, Jr., Hunt Construction of Central Florida, Inc.
