Proclaiming God’s Word Towards National Transformation Jonah 3:1-10 and Matthew 5:13-16 The theme for National Bible Week is Proclaiming God’s Word Towards National Transformation. What is the relation of the above passages to this theme? First, let us look at the book of Jonah. This book is famous for two things: a prophet running away from God, and a big fish swallowing a prophet. What has the book of Jonah got to do with national transformation? There are three major participants in the book of Jonah: the prophet himself, the city of Nineveh, and God. Nineveh was a very wicked city, and deserved to be punished and destroyed by God. God wanted Jonah to go and proclaim God’s word of judgment to Nineveh. Jonah refused. Why? Was it because Jonah did not want Nineveh to be punished? On the contrary, he wanted Nineveh to be destroyed. Not only was Nineveh wicked, it was also a heathen city and an enemy of Israel. Then why was Jonah reluctant to proclaim God’s judgment on Nineveh? Because Jonah knew that if he proclaimed God’s word to Nineveh, Nineveh would not be destroyed. Why? Because Nineveh would turn away from its wickedness and turn to God, and God would forgive the city and the whole nation. In other words, Jonah’s proclamation of God’s Word to Nineveh would lead to national transformation! The text tells us so. Repentance began with the king, but it did not stop there. All the people repented, but it did not stop there. Even animals were affected! How more thorough can national transformation be? Not only rulers but all the citizens. Not only humans but non-humans as well. But isn’t that the truth? When transformation happens, all of creation is affected. We feel like singing, “All nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres.” Jonah knew all that, and that is why he did not want to go to Nineveh. So we read in chapter 4:1-2: Jonah was very unhappy about this and became angry. So he prayed, “LORD, didn’t I say before I left home that this is just what you would do? That’s why I did my best to run away to Spain! I knew that you are a loving and merciful God, always patient, always kind, and always ready to change your mind and not punish. How about Matthew 5:13-16? The story of Jonah focuses on bringing God’s Word through proclamation and preaching. But there is more to proclamation than simply words. God’s Word is also proclaimed through the life and actions of God’s people. Viewed this way, proclaiming God’s word is not the monopoly of professional religious leaders. It is in fact the task of the whole church: clergy and lay, ordained and not ordained, men and women, young and old. So the Lord Jesus urges his followers to be salt and light to the whole world. Salt to be effective must be unseen; it disappears when it is mixed with food, but it gives food a

pleasant taste. On the other hand, light must be seen in order to be effective. These two qualities; the unseen and the seen, refer to the life of the Christian and of the church. Without doing anything or saying anything, people who follow Christ demonstrate a life-style that is admired and worthy to be followed. That is the salt part. And of course, people who follow Christ do what Christ wants them to do, to love their neighbors, to care for the poor and the needy, to pay attention to those considered least in society. That is the light part. So Jesus concludes: “In the same way your light must shine before people, so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.” There we have it. Proclaiming God’s Word is multidimensional. It is done through word, it is done through transformed lives, and it is done through acts of love and goodwill. How do we measure up to these standards? Do we see ourselves in the story of Jonah? If we allow ourselves to be read by the texts we are considering, then it becomes clear to us that indeed we are not simply the proclaimers of the Word but recipients of the Word. For we too deserve to be punished by God, and we too need to experience repentance and forgiveness again and again. National transformation has to start with us, and from us to others. Perhaps then God is telling us to be a Jonah in our own country. We should proclaim a God who hates sin and is not happy with the wickedness that is going on in our nation. At the same time, we should proclaim a God who loves the sinner and is always ready to forgive those who turn away from their wickedness. We should proclaim a God who is ready to punish us but who is also ready to pour out his love on us when we turn to him in repentance. And let us not forget our being salt and light. Our life-style should be such that the new life that Christ gives is seen in us. Hopefully then, our nation will respond in very positive way to the proclamation of God’s Word through word and life, and there will be real transformation on a national scale never before seen and experienced by anyone of us. What is the place of the Bible in all this? There is no tool that is more important in national transformation than the Bible, the written Word of God. As we celebrate National Bible Week and National Bible Sunday, let us affirm our commitment to the reading of God’s Word, to the distribution of God’s Word to the whole nation, and to the living of God’s Word, so that all of us may through God’s Word come to know our Lord Jesus Christ, the living Word of God. Knowledge of him will lead to genuine national transformation. Daniel C. Arichea, Jr., Ph. D. PBS Translation Consultant

GNT - Good News Translation

“...and you remember that ever since you were a child, you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching the truth, rebuking error, correcting faults, and giving instruction for right living, so that the person who serves God may be fully qualified and equipped to do every kind of good deed.” 2 Timothy 3:15-17 GNT

Mateo 5:16 MBB
