When I was planning my wedding, I was so worried about all of the details—How will the flowers look? What if I trip walking down the aisle? Will my husband-to-be like how I look in my dress?—I had little time to think about the union itself. The day was monumental, but the marriage has proven to be even better. Nearly 24 years later, I look at my husband with the same admiration and love that I did on that day… and then some. I might say the same has been true of publishing this magazine. When we launched Weddings Illustrated five years ago, although I knew it would be great, I couldn’t have imagined just how amazing it would turn out to be—THE bridal book that Florida weddings experts and brides have come to depend on, bursting with real weddings, gorgeous venues and pages of glamour and glitz. Much like a marriage, the magazine continues to grow stronger and cross new boundaries. Today, our digital presence is huge: Our Pinterest page, pinterest.com/wedillustrated, has exploded over recent months and we have more than 4,000 followers! You search us most for our inspiration boards, which are put together by our talented editorial team that has an eye for the sublime. Our Facebook page, facebook.com/weddingsillustrated, continues to add followers daily, and I am proud to say we have organically grown ours beyond 3,000 and have engagement of up to 25 percent—which means you follow us and care about what we have to say. If you’re a Twitter junkie, join the conversation and share your anniversary ideas— follow us @wiflorida and @wedillussales. Or Instagram us all of your fun wedding and anniversary photos—@wiflorida. We’d love to see them. Weddings Illustrated is constantly evolving, and I am thrilled with where we are today. And just like a marriage, that is worth celebrating. Throughout the year, we will be honoring the magazine’s five-year anniversary with promotions, contests, partnerships and another original Aisle Style event this summer. Your wedding day is very special and an important chapter for you as a couple. But remember, it’s the marriage that creates the entire story—one that will no doubt continue to get better and better over the years. Cheers!

editor’s letter

I love a celebration—especially when the fête honors something I have watched grow from an idea to a tour de force. Weddings Illustrated was launched five years ago as a nod to Florida’s rapidly growing wedding industry. When we conceived this title, I was pregnant (with twins, it turned out) and looking forward to giving birth to, nurturing and shaping a pair of little lives. Conceptualizing this new magazine felt very much the same. It was literally a blank canvas into which our editorial, production and advertising teams could breathe life. As I’ve watched my own children grow—they will turn five this spring— and celebrated each milestone, I’ve also watched the Weddings Illustrated brand take off. The magazine was an immediate success, embraced by brides, grooms and their families, as well as local vendors, for its beautifully presented wedding inspirations, expert advice, trend forecasting and incisive representation of the state’s varied venues and resources. Then came our website, weddingsillustrated.net, which expanded our reach to audiences well beyond the state’s borders. Indeed, we have viewers from all over the world turn to us for advice on how to plan a destination wedding in Florida and for a trove of ideas on how to make it their own. Shortly after, we made a splash on social media with an active presence on all major platforms. Since that first foray, we have offered our followers contests, live tweeting from bridal events, expert chats on Twitter, Google + hangouts, Instagram photos and an ever-growing number of inspiration boards on that all-important planning platform, Pinterest. And this is only the beginning. In the pages of this issue, we are celebrating our fifth anniversary with content I know you will love. In “The List,” on page 36, we present a package highlighting our top five picks in a variety of categories including honeymoon destinations, creative new traditions, quirky wedding dates, big ideas from experts and dresses that will take your breath away. We also continue the tradition of real Florida weddings. Twelve amazing celebrations are sprinkled throughout the book, offering inspiration in a variety of themes, from cool country to romantic steampunk. In addition, our Details pages, beginning on page 21, offer insight on new trends and a fresh take on perennial Florida favorites. These are only a few of the reasons Weddings Illustrated has become the state’s most beloved publication for sophisticated, stylish weddings.

It’s spring, which means our minds wander to all things floral—like this cake, for instance. SweetCakes Bakery in Lakeland created this botanical cake for a colorful backyard wedding. The hand-painted flowers on the top and bottom layers—inspired by the Ashton Events wedding invitations—create a stunning watercolor effect on the fondant icing. A threedimensional sugar-paste flower cascade, which includes ranunculus and billy balls, speaks to the floral theme while the textured middle tier, sculpted from buttercream, provides aesthetic balance. 5 Ways to Make It Personal

Focus on Forever Studio

Photography by stacy paul

clockwise from right: couples show off their personalities and hobbies through seating, centerpieces, a signature drink, an appearance from their alma mater’s mascot and a unique reception entrance.

1. Offer a custom cocktail. Work with your bartender to create

a mixed drink that incorporates your and your groom’s cocktail preferences. Name it something significant, like a play on your new last name. If your individual tastes don’t mix well together, you can offer his and hers cocktails . 2. Build your theme around a hobby or passion. More couples are hosting wedding celebrations based on interests such as boating, golfing and even reading. The possibilities to play up a theme are endless, from the venue (for example, if you’re an art lover, consider marrying in a museum) to a whimsical cake. Don’t be afraid to go bold. 3. Get creative with the reception tables. Who says centerpieces have to be made of flowers? Incorporate personal touches like stacks of your favorite books or a photo of the two of you on each table. Instead of numbers, name tables after something significant, like your favorite bands or places you’ve traveled to together. 4. Give a nod to your past. Many couples opt to incorporate customs from their heritage or religion. Serve cultural food or dishes from your favorite family recipes. Or pay tribute to your alma mater by playing your school’s fight song during the reception. 5. Say it in favors. Send guests home with locally made gifts from your favorite places (see page 32 for some ideas).

 5 Quirky Dates

1. Number Junkies:

January 4

Math whizzes probably found it hard to resist the temptation of wedding on 1-4-14.

2. Lit Lovers:

march 15

Shakespeare may have warned, “Beware the Ides of March!” but with the date falling on a Saturday this year, there’s no doubt literary types will be lined up at the altar to tie the knot.

3. Word Nerds:

5 Big Ideas UNIQUE RSVPs “Instead of providing the traditional ‘M__’ line and checkboxes for attendance, opt for a reply card with an empty area and an instruction to respond creatively. I’m always floored by how creative guests can be, and the replies make amazing keepsakes. Display the cards on your wedding day for everyone to see.” —Laura McGlynn, principal stationery designer at Make Merry!, West Palm Beach

3 witness book

“In lieu of a traditional guest book, have everyone sign a witness book as they are entering your ceremony space. Before the processional, ask a reader to carry the book down the aisle and read a note explaining why you asked guests to witness your wedding and expressing that you are honored to have them take part in the celebration. By letting guests know you thought of them before your ceremony begins, it changes the dynamic and makes them feel part of something special. After your wedding, the book can be used and signed again at different life milestones, like a housewarming, new baby, etc.” —Kelly McWilliams, destination wedding stylist and planner at Weddings by Socialites, Naples 38

“Bold and graphic focal points can add interest, drama and flow to your wedding. Guests will be drawn to them and move to the next focal point—for example, from a sign-in table to a wellplaced centerpiece in an area used for cocktail hour. Make them large and interesting enough to capture attention and be memorable. Flowers, furniture and props can combine in this fashion to create a simply beautiful wedding.” —Brian Watson, lead floral designer at Myrtie Blue, Fort Walton Beach Tracey-Ann Jarrett Photonotions Photography

carte blanche

“Rolling buffets can be used for a variety of food themes and service types. It’s an interactive experience for your guests, and it brings the convenience and delight of selecting dishes directly off a cart as it travels through the room. They’re especially great for cocktail hours or after-parties because they encourage guests to mingle.” —Chef Pierre-Marie Leprince, director of culinary development at Puff ’n Stuff Catering, Orlando

“When planning your reception, design a space especially for the groom. Create a smoking lounge with a cigar roller or a display of his favorite cigars. Consider a whiskey bar with smallbatch whiskey and rye from all over the country or some of his favorite local beers from a craft brewery. Think reclaimed wood, oak barrels, leather chesterfield sofas, crystal decanters and a clawfoot tub overflowing with bottles of his favorite brews.” —Katie Blineau, lead rental stylist and designer at Unearthed Vintage, Miami

5 New Traditions

1. Anniversary Shoot Long after the wedding is over, couples are continuing the celebration by taking part in unique anniversary photo shoots to commemorate their love, often with the same photographer who shot their wedding day. For their first anniversary, Kyndra and Kyle Petrick (above) wrote letters to each other reflecting on their first year of marriage, which they then placed in bottles and tossed into the Gulf of Mexico. The photo shoot, captured by Set Free Photography, was styled by Along Came Stephanie with the help of Alter Elements. 2. Honor Bouquet To replace the reception bouquet toss, some brides are choosing to give their bouquet (or a second bouquet) to the guest couple who has been married the longest. Another variation of this idea is to dedicate a special dance to married couples, where the DJ intermittently asks couples to sit down according to how long they have been together. The last couple standing is then presented with the beautiful flower arrangement. 3. In Loving Memory Remembering lost loved ones has become an integral part of weddings. Ideas include a

4. JITTER DEBUGGERS The hours leading up to the big moment can be nerve-wracking, so many couples are choosing to interact in ways big and small before the ceremony to calm their nerves. You can send each other notes expressing your excitement and love, or opt for a “first look” photo session pre-ceremony.

5. Rethinking the Registry Not everyone wants a porcelain casserole dish as a wedding gift. Some couples are seeking alternative ideas such as charity registries or unique “experiences”—and companies are developing services to meet these demands. Registries like the I Do Foundation offer direct donations to nonprofits but also partner with stores such as Pottery Barn to donate a percentage of purchases to charity. Wanderable is a honeymoon gift site couples can use to register for “experiences” such as a camel ride in the Sahara Desert, and they can even send a thank-you postcard of the experience via the smartphone app. (wanderable.com)

Going the Distance

Astrid Alves and Andy Gilon celebrated their international romance with a sophisticated, Spanish-inspired Miami wedding. By Nhi Hoang | Photography by Ozzy Garcia Photography

t takes a strong bond to withstand a long-distance relationship. And no one knows that better than Astrid Alves and Andy Gilon. The couple met through mutual friends in Caracas, Venezuela, Astrid’s hometown. Andy, who works in finance, had been living in Geneva, Switzerland and traveled to Caracas for work. They were dating for about a year when Astrid was accepted to a master’s degree program in the States and moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Their love already sealed, they decided to make it work—4,000 miles apart. “We knew it was just a phase,” Astrid says. “It was only three years, and what’s three years compared to the rest of your life?” The next few years promised twice-a-day phone calls, countless international flights and plenty of relationship ups and downs. But the couple rose to the challenge, and upon Astrid’s graduation the couple decided to build a life together in Miami. It was a Tuesday when Andy spontaneously decided to throw a party in their apartment. Before guests arrived, he took Astrid out onto their balcony and proposed. That morning, he had finalized the deal on a new house they were buying, and he wanted to be engaged before they moved in. “I was really not

expecting to get engaged and own a house in the same day,” recalls Astrid. “He really took me by surprise, which is not easy to do.” To start planning the wedding, friends suggested Astrid look online and save photos of things she liked. She saved just one image: an old Spanish-style building bathed in candlelight. With the photo as inspiration, she set out to find the perfect venue and settled on Plymouth Congregational Church, falling in love with the architecture and the ambience of the structure. Astrid walked down the aisle in a gorgeous Ian Stuart princess gown with exquisite beading, and Andy met her at the altar, where they were joined in marriage by a pastor and a rabbi. The ceremony incorporated both of their faiths, Catholicism and Judaism. For the reception, planner Nathalie Cadet-James created an elegant white celebration. The party was held at The Historic Alfred I. Dupont Building, which was Andy’s suggestion. Upon entering, guests encountered a table decorated with low mercury vessels hosting garden blossoms in white, taupe and cream, surrounded by votive candles. Vintage decor, dim lighting and long tables draped in white lace created an old-world romantic essence. And family and friends from all over celebrated the long-distance couple who

were finally together. “The majority of our guests were traveling abroad,” says Astrid. “It was very special how our wonderful friends and family took the time to come to Miami to share our wedding day. The only thing that matters is spending time with the people you love.” Astrid and Andy wanted to make sure the trip was worthwhile for their guests, so they threw a party they’d never forget. When the reception’s energy began to wane, they had a plan: La Hora Loca show. “The crazy hour,” La Hora Loca is a carnival-like performance filled with costumes, masks, music, drummers and lots of dancing. “How can you not go onto the dance floor when you have this carnival happening in front of you?” Astrid explains. It worked: Guests didn’t leave the dance floor until 5:30 a.m. [

FairyTale a Modern

JoAnna Ballarini and Stephen Myers wed in ethereal splendor at Pine Creek Sporting Club. By Daphne Nikolopoulos Photography by Emily Harris JoAnna Ballarini’s plan to elope didn’t quite work out. After she had bought an elopement dress, her fiancé, Stephen Myers, convinced her to change her mind. The result: a Cinderella-style wedding most girls only dream of. “Stephen wanted to give me a spectacular wedding I would always remember,” JoAnna says. Laughing, she adds, “I had no choice!” As it turned out, Stephen’s idea was a good one. The couple married on December 14, 2013 at their private ranch at Pine Creek Sporting Club in Okeechobee, in a natural orchard strung with twinkling lights. The celebration took place in a clear tent with fluttering butterflies, crystal chandeliers and crystal-and-sequin embroidered linens. “For a girl who said, ‘Let’s elope,’ I got the wedding of my dreams,” JoAnna reminisces.

The bride walked down a whitecarpeted aisle to an archway of twinkling white tree branches: “It felt like a secret garden.”

To fully appreciate the story, it helps to know the groom. Stephen, the owner of Pine Creek, is nothing if not a bon vivant and an enthusiastic participant in the great adventure that is life. And he loves a good party. JoAnna recalls their second date. “He took me to Pine Creek, and I was blown away,” she says. “We went horseback riding and shooting, which was a great way to get to know each other better. It was so original and so much fun.” A lover of the outdoors, JoAnna immediately connected with Stephen’s adventurous spirit. They shared many more moments in nature, even as they

navigated the glitzy Palm Beach social circuit (Stephen, a philanthropist and supporter of many causes, also has a home in Palm Beach). The two moved effortlessly between these seemingly opposite lifestyles, enjoying the best of both worlds. When they decided to make their union official— and to have a formal wedding instead of eloping— there was no question they would marry at Pine Creek, where they felt the first sparks of love. The ceremony took place in the grove in front of their home on the ranch. Event designer Bruce Sutka created a magical setting based on JoAnna’s hand-beaded Reem Acra gown, which she describes as “ethereal.”

Guests dined on Black River Russian Oscietra caviar, shrimp cocktail and lump crabmeat, then danced the night away under a massive tent overlooking a lake.

In true Cinderella fashion, the bride arrived in a carriage drawn by four champion racehorses and attended by footmen, as a string quartet played “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” JoAnna walked down a white carpet, through an arcade of tree branches decorated with white lights and candles. After the ceremony, guests retreated to the front lawn into an Alice in Wonderland–style setting. Whimsical furnishings sat atop Persian rugs from the groom’s own collection, living topiaries moved through the crowd and color-changing cocktail tables lent an otherworldly flair.

The couple shared a romantic moment during the fireworks display that topped off the night.

Dinner was under a tent decorated to the nines. Butterfly mobiles, crystal chandeliers and a silverand-white color scheme perpetuated the magical ambience. JoAnna changed into a Hervé Leger dress for the reception and danced the night away with her groom to the sounds of Libido, a popular Miami-based band. Later in the evening, a fireworks display wowed guests and charged the party atmosphere. And when the clock struck midnight, this Cinderella’s carriage did not transform into a pumpkin. “The party went until 2 a.m.,” JoAnna says. “We were the last ones on the dance floor!” [

Wine Country Wanderlust

After a sparkling wine tasting at Schramsberg Vineyards, be sure to tour the labyrinths of storage caves at the legendary German estate.

Napa Valley (visitnapavalley.com) boasts the landscapes of storybooks—vast mosaics of green that have been preserved by the Land Trust of Napa Valley (napalandtrust.org). For decades, the Land Trust has halted large-scale devleopments and high-rise projects, resulting in a pictureperfect montage of vineyard-lined hills, crystalline rivers and creeks, and towering mountains. With hundreds of wine estates dazzling with bespoke incarnations of oenophile rhapsody, the adventure here lies in paving your own wine trail. One way to begin the journey is to partake in a vineyard tasting course. In the house blending room at Raymond Vineyards (raymondvineyards.com), chemistry lab meets St. Tropez discothèque as visitors in the “Winemaker for a Day” class create, label and bottle their own red blends to the beats of the cranked-up bass. At St. Supery Vineyards & Winery (stsupery.com), couples put their olfactory senses to the test in “Aromatherapy with a Corkscrew.”

Thrill seekers may opt to venture high in the mountains to Schramsberg Vineyards (schramsberg.com) for a rare tasting session featuring sparkling wines and a tour of the history-steeped grounds of this legendary German estate. Not to be missed: the labyrinths of storage caves. To temper the days of heavy pours, indulge in a farmfresh Italian feast at Bottega (botteganapavalley.com). Chef Michael Chiarello creates divine interventions of antipasti, pastas and secondis like black garlic spaghetti with prawns and forno-roasted, Calabrian-style whole fish with grilled eggplant and fermented garlic. Organic eaters frequent the Michelin-starred Solbar (solage calistoga.com/solbar), where Executive Chef Brandon Sharp divides his eclectic menu between hearty cuisine like pork shoulder over cheddar grits and lighter dishes such as Coke Farm escarole salad with pomegranate seed and Bartlett pears in a honey-tabil vinaigrette. One of the most serene spots for slumber is Meadowood (meadowood.com), which sits amid the picturesque montage. Clusters of stilted lodges and cottages, each rustically elegant with stone fireplaces and intimate terraces, are spaced over a private, 250-acre estate that houses sporting activities, a world-class spa and The Restaurant at Meadowood, which has earned three Michelin stars.

Monterey Bay Aquarium is an impressive site in the quaint microcity Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Seaside Splendor

Monterey offers charming architecture in Carmel-by-the-Sea, a stunning craggy coastline and wine on the Carmel Wine Walk.

In a state teeming with darling small towns and cities, Monterey County’s (seemonterey.com) Carmel-by-theSea may just be its crown jewel. At just one square mile, this tiny city defines haute seaside charm, its Europeaninspired downtown strewn with one-of-a-kind locales and enveloped by swathes of dramatic, windswept beach. Exclusive boutiques and art galleries populate the city’s streets, but the design-driven downtown also serves as a showroom for the regional vineyards of Carmel Valley. Unlike Napa and Sonoma, where wine tastings take place at the estates themselves, many regional wineries house tasting rooms in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea. To experience these tasting rooms to the fullest, opt for the Carmel Wine Walk (carmelcalifornia.org), a passport that entitles holders to samplings at a dozen downtown locales. Oenophiles earn a stamp after each four-glass sojourn. There’s plenty to do beyond downtown, as natural splendor surrounds Carmel-by-the-Sea. Monster jellyfish, gregarious seals and gray whales skirt past the craggy coastline of Point Lobos State Nature Reserve while farther north, Big Sur wows with endless, awe-inspiring panoramas. Colossal waves lap rugged promontories, zigzagging across some 90 miles; an unspoiled interior, draped in rainbows of green, showcases primeval redwoods and other arboreal giants that seem to touch the sky. In nearby Monterey, the Monterey Bay Aquarium (montereybayaquarium.org) uncovers the mysterious life under the sea off California’s north coast. From leopard sharks sliding through the mysterious Kelp Forest to the two-ton ocean sunfish in Open Sea, the exhibits give visitors a new appreciation for California’s marine life. The aquarium also serves as a think tank and research center for the global Seafood Watch (seafoodwatch.org), guiding consumers and restaurateurs in the most sustainable decisions concerning fish and

seafood. Restaurants like Monterey County’s Passion Fish (passionfish.net) abide strictly by these guidelines, serving fresh, sustainable dishes like smoked trout ceviche tostaditas with cashew pesto and salsa brava followed by sea scallops in tomato-truffle butter over rice pudding. When it comes to accommodations in the area, hotel L’Auberge Carmel (laubergecarmel.com) is the quintessence of the city’s old-world elegance. The 20-room Relais & Chateaux property recalls the intimate inns of rural France, with a beautiful central courtyard and original coved plaster walls from 1929. Yet L’Auberge Carmel keeps history in style with modern luxuries such as oversized bath areas with heated floors and designer beds. The property’s intimate in-house restaurant, Aubergine Restaurant

(auberginecarmel.com), is a gastronomic tour de force. URBAN DELIGHT For some, lively urban delights can be a welcome departure from the post-wedding penchant for overrelaxing. The City of Angels never fails to impress with its trendsetting locales and larger-than-life personality. Many of Los Angeles’ most enchanting pockets surface in West Hollywood (visitwesthollywood.com), the epicenter of the city’s latest food and cocktail happenings, where the social scene is bar none and celebrity sightings are a dime a dozen. Have a libation at the famed Chateau Marmont (chateaumarmont.com), making sure to leave early enough to snag a table at the hottest spot in town, the New England–inspired, upscale seafood shack Connie & Ted’s (connieandteds.com), helmed by L.A.’s current “It” chef, Michael Cimarusti. Clockwise from right: Coast at Shutters on the Beach, The London West Hollywood, rooftop dining at The London, a pristine Los Angeles beach, Connie & Ted’s, private cabanas at The London.

Nestled in one of West Hollywood’s most picturesque hillsides, the all-suite, David Collins–designed The London West Hollywood (thelondonwesthollywood. com) reigns, capped by a seductive rooftop swimming pool. Expansive en-suite terraces come standard at The London, and spacious bathrooms boast giant soaking tubs and double-headed waterfall showers. Collins delivers a bold design statement by employing a rich, neutral color palette. The suede-walled hallways lead to airy, wood-draped suites with furnishings unilaterally positioned toward glittering views of the Hollywood Hills. For a quiet respite, take a less-than-30-minute drive to Santa Monica for a day at the beach. Blessed with an average of 340 days of sunshine a year and 3.5 miles of shoreline, palm-laced Santa Monica exudes pure California, as surfers hang ten by day and culture vultures peruse the 90-plus art galleries peppering the boutique-lined streets by night. Santa Monica’s restaurants embrace the West Coast’s farm-to-table and ocean-to-table devotion, reflected in the remarkable flavors at local restaurants. Start the day with the lemon ricotta pancakes and fresh berries at celeb hangout Coast, the beachfront restaurant at famed resort Shutters on the Beach (shuttersonthebeach.com). Later, take a beach break at Water Grill (watergrill.com) to sample 15 of the freshest oysters from both coasts and impressive raw shellfish platters. in brown butter alongside hearts of palm, soy and raisins and wild Chilean sea bass on a bed of cauliflower puree, accented by crispy cauliflower and lemon chutney. At Fig (figsantamonica.com), Chef Ray Garcia procures 90 percent of his ingredients from the locally driven Santa Monica Farmers’ Market. His bistroinspired “ingredients-first” gastronomy puts a twist on New American cuisine, shunning sauce-heavy dishes and lengthy recipes in favor of delectable simplicity. Located on the lower level of the Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows ( fairmont.com/santa-monica), Fig is appropriately named after the glorious, century-old fig tree that branches over the hotel’s grand entrance. The tree was a mere sapling when the property was originally erected as a family mansion circa 1889. Today that mansion, now called the Palisades wing, has been augmented by a 10-story Ocean Tower and 32 bungalows to create one of Santa Monica’s most lauded hotels. The 302 guestrooms at the Fairmont include three new Miramar Ocean View Suites designed by famed interior designer Lynda Murray. With loft-inspired foundations of glass, steel and hardwoods, Murray’s suites exude fresh California cool with emerald green wet bars, retro-cool tufted loungers, velvet headboards, reclaimed wood furnishings and eclectic light fixtures. For a breathtaking panoramic view from Malibu to Catalina Island, check into a penthouse level unit in the Ocean Tower. [

Somewhere in Time

Jenna Fazzino and Justin Greisen’s wedding was a storybook romance— with a little steampunk thrown in. By Jennifer Pfaff Photography by Chris Joriann

Jenna Fazzino has always felt like she belongs in a different time period. She adores antiques, regularly watches Downton Abbey and feels right at home at Renaissance festivals. Her favorite book? Pride and Prejudice, of course. So when it came time to plan her wedding to Justin Greisen, it only made sense that Jenna’s love for earlier eras would be a prominent inspiration. “I wanted to transport people for a day,” she says. “I’ve been enamored with those times since I was a kid.” A former event planner, Jenna took on her own wedding, starting with the venue. “I was obsessed with trying to find something old,” she says. “I wanted a certain look. I wanted it to have character but also be blank.” The South Florida native knew just the right place: the Harriet Himmel Theater in West Palm Beach. The former church was built in 1926 and is now the center of CityPlace, a lively dining and entertainment hub in the heart of the city’s downtown area. Things moved quickly from there. Within four to six weeks, she had booked all of her vendors. She spent the next year gathering ideas and items from websites like Etsy—and drawing inspiration from her love of literature as well as romantic aspects of different time periods—to create a mixed-era vintage theme. “[My ideas] evolved while talking to my vendors,” she says. “They understood what I wanted, and I gave them freedom to be creative with what they thought would be good, too. It was a collaboration.” WEDDINGS ILLUSTRATED | spring/summer 2014

The boutonnieres, wrapped in burlap, featured succulents with scabies pods, and each had a gear attached. Justin's (below) included a key.

Jenna’s vintage vision came together June 22, 2013. After she and Justin shared a first look underneath a large tree outside their hotel, the West Palm Beach Marriott, they boarded a vintage trolley with their bridal party to CityPlace. Inside the Harriet Himmel Theater, silver candelabras welcomed guests at the entrance, and rows of chairs were lined with mercury glass jars that held garden roses and green amaranths. Ceremony programs were placed on an antique typewriter Jenna had found on eBay and decorated with heart cutouts and roses made from the pages of a worn copy of Pride and Prejudice she had purchased on Etsy. Jenna walked down the aisle in a Lazaro gown and Manolo Blahnik Swan heels to “Mrs. Darcy,” a Dario Marianelli song from the 2005 film based on her favorite book. She met Justin in front of a whimsical drape, glowing candles and tall wrought-iron candelabras with pillar candles and mounds of lush florals. At the altar were 10-foot-tall ficus trees adorned with mini lights, hanging crystals and votive teardrops with lit tealights. “There was so much to look at, it was hard to stay focused,” Jenna recalls. Jenna and Justin exchanged vows personalized for

“I was trying to give the feel of what you would see if you were attending a party in Downton Abbey,” Jenna says of her inspiration for the centerpieces. The table name cards on the books came from the Etsy shop PurplePeonyCouture (etsy.com/shop/ PurplePeonyCouture).

them through a service called Romantic Vows, which writes vows based on an individual questionnaire each had to fill out. Neither knew the promises they would make to each other until their wedding day, Jenna says. Following the 30-minute ceremony, guests headed upstairs for the cocktail hour while the room below was transformed for the reception. Jenna used this time to have a private moment: She walked through the space and quietly observed everything she had spent the past 13 months creating. Reception tables were named after literary couples, each displaying a copy of the respective book—some antique—including The Great Gatsby and The Hunger Games. Centerpieces consisted of lavender, ivory and peach garden roses with peach dahlias, hydrangeas, Queen Anne’s lace, yellow stock and chocolate cosmos. Flowers were surrounded by vintage finds Jenna had gathered, such as opera glasses and strands of pearls. As a nod to Justin’s profession as an engineer, the decor included elements like cogs and wheels—even incorporated in the groomsmen’s boutonnieres—for a

There were no props—all decor items, like cogs, vintage typewriters and antique pearls, were real. The couple saved the wishing-tree tags (above right) in a book. WEDDINGS ILLUSTRATED | spring/summer 2014

Jenna’s idea for the cake—a white-chocolate marble Godiva flavor with fudge filling—came from a similar design she saw online. Her dress, found at Boca Raton Bridal, had beading, lace, silk, tulle and a train that mimicked the detail on the bust. “I wanted to feel like a fairy,” she says. “Like I was floating.” steampunk accent. “[The decor] came from everywhere, from HomeGoods to eBay,” Jenna says. Place cards featured wrought-iron skeleton keys. Instead of signing a book, guests wrote a wish or advice for Jenna and Justin on a tag to hang on the branches of a Manzanita tree. The decor perfectly captured the couple’s personalities, Jenna says: “I think of life like a story in a sense. I was trying to tell a story of how we are. I wanted to transform the room into us.” The cake design also played into the steampunk and vintage theme. “It had gears and pipes and flowers, which were meant to look like the ones from my bouquet,” Jenna says. “The middle layer looks like book 66

pages, and the bottom layer is a vintage book.” After making their entrance, Jenna and Justin shared their first dance to “A Thousand Years (Part 2)” by Christina Perri. The couple served “enough food to feed 400 people,” Jenna laughs, and after the DJ played the last song, the newlyweds exited down the stairs with a sparkler send-off. Since their wedding, the Greisens have been continuing the next chapter of their story in Palm City, where they recently purchased a house. “We try to live life’s more realistic Disney fairy tale that includes a mortgage and cutting the grass,” Jenna says with a wink. rowing up, Jena Tipping didn’t spend much time dreaming of her future weding. She never put on a dress and her mom’s much-too-big high heels and walked down a faux aisle glancing demurely at her stuffed-bear wedding guests. In fact, it wasn’t until Bradley Crone proposed to her in Las Vegas after five years of dating that a vision of her wedding day began to take form. And from that point forward, it happened fast. “Our engagement was only 10 months, so I had to get working,” she says. “It came naturally from there.” Canadian-born Jena met Florida native Bradley while studying at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers. So the first decision to be made was where to hold the wedding: Florida or Canada? “We decided on Florida because Brad was born and raised there, and it’s kind of my second home too,” says Jena, whose grandfather has an estate in Naples. The property, they agreed, was the perfect location for a wedding. The dress came next. While shopping in Toronto, Jena fell in love with a blush-colored Monique Lhuillier gown. “I’m not usually a pink person, but I wanted something different,” she says of her choice. The dress was the spark: Immediately, a palette of blush, palomino and ivory formed in Jena’s mind, as well as an overall theme of vintage with some modern accents.

Paper Merchant and Luster Designs created the blush-tone invitations and day-of paper (respectively); a vintage lounge offered guests seating, a photo booth and a cigar roller. 70

To help bring her vision to life, Jena hired wedding planner Margaret Short of Margaret Events, who scouted Naples vendors since Jena was up in Canada. In the months leading up to her wedding, Jena traveled to Florida three times to select linens, taste menus and approve decor. Finally, April 6, 2013 arrived. The early-evening ceremony took place on an island on the property. A bridge served as the aisle, and framed by an archway of honeysuckle, grapevine and floral garlands, Jena and Bradley exchanged traditional vows in front of 165 guests. While the couple slipped away for pictures after the ceremony, guests enjoyed a lively cocktail hour that included custom games, vintage lounges, designer doughnuts and music by the Anna Wilson Trio. The signature drink for the evening was called the 2200— an ode to the venue’s address. The reception tent was a vintage dream, layered in shades of blush and beige, and illuminated by the setting sun. The ceiling was dotted with chandeliers,

two of which hung below giant rings comprised of 500 white dendrobium orchids and 350 white hydrangeas. The tables held crystal candelabras and manzanita branches accented with ivory, blush and white flowers and dripping with pearls. Round menu cards were placed under glass Riedel chargers, and Chef Sebastian Mazzotta created a delicious dinner that pleased Jena’s gluten-free family while also highlighting Florida ingredients. Between courses, the wedding party toasted the newlyweds. Jena’s father’s speech was the final and most memorable of the evening. “It was very personal, very emotional,” Jena recalls. “Everyone was crying.” Immediately following the speech, tears still welling in their eyes, Jena and her dad had their father-daughter dance. As that came to a close, the band, CTO High Voltage, played the unmistakable funky beat of The B-52s’ “Love Shack.” The party had begun. The dancing continued through the night, interrupted only by the cutting of the cake—almond amaretto with white chocolate raspberry filling, embellished with pearl strands, intricate lace and blush-colored flowers. “I wanted it to meld with the

vintage vibe,” Jena says of her choice. The groom’s cake was a decadent German chocolate. Fueled by sugar and love, guests celebrated until 1:30 in the morning. For this fun-loving couple, seeing their friends and family enjoying themselves meant the evening was a success. The newly anointed Mr. and Mrs. Crone joined their families and close friends for brunch the next day before traveling to Antigua for their honeymoon. Two months later, Jena found out her blossoming family would gain a new member as she and Bradley will welcome a baby in March—just in time for their one-year anniversary. [

“I loved having a few secret moments with my husband,” says Cristin. “At one point while everyone was dancing, we sat outside under the lights and just enjoyed the sounds of everyone having a good time.”

The nuptials of Cristin MacDonald and Travis Weber were as laid-back as the bride and groom. Cristin MacDonald and Travis Weber met in the City of Brotherly Love, but their Dover wedding was a low-key, rustic affair that reflected what they’re all about—Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. “I’m not a ballroom type of girl.” That’s all Cristin knew when she embarked on planning her wedding. “So it was a matter of finding a venue that was a little more low-key.” She googled “rustic country weddings” and found Cross Creek Ranch. As soon as she learned where it was, she knew she’d found the right spot. “We’re huge Phillies fans, and they have their spring training in Clearwater, nearby,” she explains. “We were getting married in March during spring training, so that was perfect.” She booked the venue without seeing it in person. The couple’s wedding date was set for St. Patrick’s Day— somewhat appropriate since they met at an Irish Pub back in 2009. Cristin was in graduate school in Philadelphia at the time; Travis was living and working in the city. Cristin

The bridesmaids’ looks were diversified with slight variations in the dresses and gorgeous seafoam green beaded necklaces; each maid had a special photo of her with the bride on her bouquet.

had gone to the pub with a friend and the two were lamenting their dating lives when Travis walked in with a group of guys. Cristin promptly made a move. “It had always been on my bucket list to send a guy a drink at a bar,” she says. “So I sent a pitcher of beer to his table.” Two years later, Cristin arrived home one evening to find a puppy in her apartment wearing a red bow around its neck. The gift was so adorable, she didn’t notice the engagement ring tied to the bow. “I was so excited, I yelled, ‘You got me a puppy!’” she says. “Travis kept saying, ‘Look at her neck,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, it’s a pretty bow.’” Their March 17, 2013 wedding perfectly complemented their fun-loving relationship. The event was a mix of styles and interests that somehow blended together to create an elegant, motley affair. “The whole wedding was a little mismatchy,” Cristin describes. “There was a contrasting feel to everything.” Cross Creek Ranch worked with wedding planner Emilee Yockey to provide the decor: A sofa made of hay was transformed into a comfy resting spot with fluffy pillows and a quilt. Chandeliers hung from the

A hay sofa provided a resting spot for guests, while the dessert table satisfied their sweet tooth.

“It was such a fantastic weekend,” says Cristin. “[Having] all of our favorite people in one space together was just magical.”

barn ceiling over the bar, while guests played horseshoes and cornhole outside, and kids huddled by a bonfire. “I wanted the wedding to be refreshing, a surprise,” she says. “But not so unusual people wouldn’t think it was a wedding.” The weekend started out with a tribute to Philly. After the rehearsal on Saturday, the whole party went to a Phillies-Yankees training game. That night, they went on a cruise around Tampa Bay. On their wedding day, Cristin walked toward her future husband, who was standing under the ranch’s enormous oak tree, to the sound of bagpipes—it was St. Patrick’s Day, after all. Preceding her down the aisle was her dog (the one who gave her the ring), Penny. Underneath her Demetrios gown, Cristin wore Boulet cowboy boots. “I’m so not a heels girl,” she explains. “And there was mulch everywhere since we got married on a ranch. Plus, I think in a past life I was a cowgirl.” The bridesmaids all wore pastel pink dresses from Bill Levkoff, each unique and accessorized differently. They all carried baby’s breath; on each bouquet was a wooden tag with a photo of the bridesmaid with Cristin. The bride’s bouquet was a mix of wildflowers. Travis picked out the menswear—gray suits with gray-and-pink-striped ties. The groom’s suit was a lighter shade than the groomsmen’s, while the best man sported a darker shade than the others to stand out. After the ceremony, guests feasted on Southern barbecue: a buffet of ribs, chicken, pulled pork and macaroni and cheese. “We’re more Diners, Drive-ins and Dives as opposed to the fanciest restaurant,” says Cristin. “We like to find the good food, and sometimes that’s not where you’d expect it to be.” As a nod to the holiday, Travis devised a green signature drink—“some sort of Midori sour punch,” Cristin describes. “We called it Lucky in Love.” Guests danced to a DJ, under white lights hanging from the barn ceiling. The tables were decorated with lanterns and mason jars filled with pastel wildflowers. And resting on a table made of barrels was the dessert— cupcakes and the wedding cake from Alessi Bakery. The personal touch: a cake topper depicting Travis in a Phillies shirt, Cristin holding a Phillies pendant, and Penny. The wedding, Cristin says, felt like it was “a really good family reunion. Guys who didn’t dance were outside playing horseshoes. Kids were out there making s’mores. Everyone was doing their own thing but also building something together.” [

074-feat chrissy-0314.indd 79

“When we walked outside, all of our friends held up ‘10’ signs,” says Cristin, who is a gymnastics judge. “It was a surprise!”

Emily Hillman and Jeremy Blumberg October 18, 2013 | Oxford Exchange, Tampa Emily wanted her wedding to reflect her and her fiancé’s personalities, so she planned many aspects of the big day herself. “I put a lot of thought into the details of my wedding,” she says. A huge animal lover, she incorporated gold-painted animal figurines into the decor and the seating chart. “Another big thing for me was the music,” she says. She and Jeremy put together the day’s playlist song by song, which included tunes from Mumford & Sons and The Lumineers. Lorraine Rigby and Craig Lea October 24, 2013 | Bella Collina Golf Club, Montverde It wasn’t easy for British bride Lorraine and her fiancé, Craig, to plan their Florida nuptials, as they were organizing the event from England. “We spent 18 months planning our wedding, which was very difficult at times with the distance and the time differences between the U.K. and Florida,” Lorraine says. The couple had traveled to Florida three months into their relationship on holiday and fallen in love—with each other and with the area. So when Craig popped the question, it made sense to hold the event in the Sunshine State. Because a number of their friends and family couldn’t make it to the big day in the States, Lorraine and Craig live-streamed the wedding, and their virtual guests gathered across the pond, Champagne in hand, to watch the ceremony. Andrea Castellano and Christopher H. April 6, 2013 | The Breakers, Palm Beach As an officer in the U.S. Military, Christopher was deployed and unable to return to the United States until two days before he and Andrea tied the knot. “There was a lot of pre-wedding anxiety that he wouldn’t make it back in time,” Andrea says. Christopher did in fact make it home in time for his spring wedding—a beautiful ceremony at the Royal Poinciana Chapel in Palm Beach, followed by an elegant reception at The Breakers. Annie Richardson and Jeffrey Shea March 21, 2013 | Winter Park Farmers Market, Winter Park Annie had many favorite moments to savor on her wedding day: brunch with her bridal party, being called Mrs. Shea for the first time and indulging in catering leftovers at 3:00 in the morning, to name a few. But one of her most touching moments was in honor of her mother. Annie’s mother suffers from multiple sclerosis and was unable to travel from her home in Oklahoma to attend the wedding, so the couple decided to donate to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in lieu of party favors. “That’s why you see the orange NMSS wristbands on the place settings,” Annie explains. “People wore them the whole night.” THE BRIDE WORE Wtoo by Watters (watters.com) FLOWERS: Freshly Picked Flowers, Winter Park (freshlypickedflowers.com) CAKE: The Sweet Shop at 4 Rivers, Winter Park (4rsmokehouse.com) PIE POPS: P is for Pie, Orlando (crazyforpies. com) CUPCAKES: Blue Bird Bake Shop, Orlando (bluebirdbakeshop.com) PHOTOGRAPHER: Jason Mize Photography, Tampa (jasonmizephotography.com) PLACE CARDS AND TABLE NUMBERS: Rifle Paper Company, Winter Park (riflepaperco.com) ENTERTAINMENT: White Tie DJs, Orlando (whitetiedjs.com) CATERER: Puff ’n Stuff Catering, Orlando (puffnstuff.com)
