New Year, Fresh Start
E
very January issue, I get to reflect on what our magazine articles focused on over the past year. Last year, we hit the mark in 2019 on some of the most critical issues in our area. At the beginning of the year, we focused on coral reefs and our water situation as well as solar energy and how it’ll help our future. We educated you on the remodels of the country clubs in our area and showed you our best coastal chic homes. In philanthropy, we introduced you to Chris Norton, a local paraplegic energizing everyone to take it to the next level, and we showcased golfing legend Nancy Lopez and her amazing charities. In our lifestyle area, we showed you the family side of former secret service agent Dan Bongino. We are lucky to be able to educate readers on so many vital issues in our area. About three years ago, I noticed one of our sister publications producing a story on 40 under 40. A few years later, I thought it’s now time for our area to take a shot at investigating this feature for us. I was shocked by how difficult it was to pull off; there are too many individuals to choose from in our two counties. When putting this piece together, I read everything I could find about the 40 individuals we chose. When investigating other 40 under 40 features, I kept reading about how they were to be the most influential young leaders of today, and our 40 are no exception. We want to thank The Mansion at Tuckahoe for helping us out with our location. Our photographer Austin Amacker did a fantastic job, as well as our managing editor, Melissa Puppo; associate editor, Megan Ayscue; and web editor, Kayla Ziadie. I want to especially thank the candidates who took time out of their hectic schedules to make this all happen. This is the last issue I worked on in the year 2019 that I will put to bed. As you know, our media schedule works months ahead of print, and we had a great year! There have been so many great cover stories and features. It’s also my 13th year with Stuart Magazine this issue. STICK INSTALLATION Patrick Dougherty returns with a new hand-crafted masterpiece to McKee Botanical Garden. Made from woven sticks, Dougherty’s 2016 installation, “The Royals,” featured three tall towers that lasted in the Royal Palm Grove for two and a half years. HOW THEY MET: Justin and Renee went to high school to-

That’s when they both swiped right and matched on the dating app Tinder. While they didn’t meet up immediately, Justin drove two and a half hours to visit Renee the following weekend.
HOW THEY KNEW THEY FOUND THE ONE: Sharing
several common passions “made falling in love easy,” Renee says. From the tendency to bet on everything due to their competitive nature to spending time together at their favorite spot, Miller’s Ale House, “our love was unbreakable,” she continues. “We just knew we were meant for one another.” ON THE PROPOSAL: Before heading to a Shania Twain con-
cert, Renee brought a package inside, which Justin insisted she
with driftwood collected by Renee and her dad throughout her childhood. The wood was used in every centerpiece along with aqua glass rocks and sea coral. Beach themes made an appearance from the beginning on the invitations as shells, through to the reception in the decor.
ON THE SPECIAL DETAILS: During their unity ceremony, Justin and Renee combined sand from important places in their lives into a blue glass vase with a wooden bottom. Justin’s sand came from the bunker of a golf course his late father spent a lot of time, while Renee’s came from her favorite beach, the Stuart Rocks, where she went on several trips with friends. ON ADVICE FOR OTHER BRIDES: “Exchange morning-of notes,” Renee says. “It helped me get some of the tears out and is something I’ll keep forever.”

ince opening in 2009, La Forchetta has become a top destination for lovers of Italian food in the Stuart area. The cozy restaurant is so popular that the owners, the Di Fede family, opened a second location on U.S. Highway 1 in Stuart. The menu at La Forchetta features many traditional Italian dishes—chicken and veal marsala, Francese and Piccata, for example—but there are also some nice surprises, such as the herb-roasted salmon, Veal Porto (with port wine sauce and pine nuts) and Chicken Luca (sautéed with shiitake mushrooms and asparagus and topped with a plum tomato wine sauce). There’s also an enticing variety of pasta, as well as a separate pizza menu. When I dined here with a friend recently, we were served
by Rita, one of the owners, and she was warm, welcoming and full of suggestions on what to order. For an appetizer, we decided to split the bruschetta burrata and crostini; chopped seasoned tomatoes served on crostini and topped with a generous portion of creamy burrata and a peppery arugula salad. I chose the Veal Saltimbocca Florentine for my entrée; a plate of three large scaloppini topped with prosciutto and mozzarella, served with a white wine butter sauce on a bed of spinach. The veal was fork-tender and the dish was full of earthy flavor. My dining companion ordered the Penne di Papa, a generous portion of penne combined with sautéed shiitake mushrooms, Bolognese sauce and topped with shaved Parmesan—a rich and satisfying dish. For dessert, we enjoyed a house-made caramelized apple cheesecake, a delicious ending to a memorable meal.

O
n the Treasure Coast, luxury properties are those valued at $1 million or more. But just because someone has the means to purchase a luxury home, does not mean the funds exist to maintain it. To protect the value of a luxury home, the property is expected to be kept in impeccable condition, which can result in many hidden or unexpected costs, especially for the first-time luxury property owner. Such expenses can include landscape services, often that extend beyond simple weekly visits; pool services—again with higher frequency than in average homes; and regular housekeeping. Depending on the property size, these services may be rendered by staff solely for that home. In our beautiful waterfront area, luxury homes will often require professional window cleaning services as the windows extend beyond multiple stories and can face saltwater elements. The same is true of the exterior and fixtures that must be maintained to high standards. Frequent pressure cleaning may be needed. Similarly, properties with private docks will require maintenance to keep barnacles to a minimum, boat lifts in good working order and the structure stable. The luxury home and its valuable contents are often maintained by high-end security monitoring systems, even in gated communities with roaming security. Those communities will often have high monthly and annual fees that need to be considered in the expenses as well. Luxury homes are often palatial, which means the utility costs are often inflated, too. Lastly, we can’t forget the high property taxes that accompany a luxury home as a result of its high value, which can be the tipping point on ongoing property costs. Even if one can afford the purchase of their dream, luxury property, careful consideration must be given to the additional costs to maintain the home and its value.

W
ithin our crystal-clear dazzling waters exist trophy-sized fish that anglers yearn to battle with. Power, greatness and sheer herculean strength will assure victory heading into battle, mostly. Some days on the water can easily turn into joyless sorrow, and your adventure into perfect conditions can leave you holding a participation trophy in the end. In other words, every seasoned angler deals with a day of disappointment. We are talking about outsmarting an inferior species. Yet with constant casting, perfect placement and presentation of your bait or lures, it’s not a guarantee you will come out victorious. I always say to myself, “This is the last cast, and it’s going to be the one.” Yet, the “one” never strikes and it can feel like the Earth stopped rotating. As anglers, you will experience “skunking.” Being skunked, or left without a catch, is truly disappointing. The day started out promising and ended up as your worst round to date. Let the blame games commence; perhaps there are low atmospheric pressures, unstable water temperatures, a slightly overcast full moon, the wrong tide, etc. You can easily come up with an excuse over a day of being skunked. The thing is, after decades of being skunked from time to time, you come to realize fishing will become hot again. Count on it. Persistence will help you reclaim your throne and once again reign as king. You must be patient through the times when your subjects are obstinate and fussy. Ultimately, with enough tenacity, you will return to the pristine waters with emperor-like resolve, overcoming the skunking. I love fishing even when I’m not catching.

C
hristopher Carnes experienced the allure of art at a young age. As a kindergartener at Bessey Creek Elementary, the then-5-year-old saw a display of paintings at the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center, met the artist and learned she ran the Visionary School of Arts. “I wanted to try something new, and I thought maybe I should try art,” Carnes remembers. “I started lessons and never stopped.” Now a 15-year-old sophomore at South Fork High School, his brushstrokes have blossomed in a multitude of

mediums including acrylic, oil and pastel. Eleven of his creations recently hung at the Osceola Street Café. He has won awards from Audubon of Martin County, the Martin County Fair, and the Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commercesponsored Home, Garden & Orchid Show. “Over the years, you could tell that I just got better and better and better,” he says. “The main thing I like about art is the creativity you get to put in it.” By combining his artistic talent with his environmental passion—he serves as president of Students4H20, promoting its Plastic Bag Initiative and organizing its an-
nual Water Fest event—he has turned painting into a platform. A piece titled “Affected” portrays a sea turtle in an underwater reef scene that, when ultraviolet light is shined on it, exposes the animal’s plastic-filled skeleton. “It wasn’t being discussed a lot, and I wanted to help engage in that conversation,” he says of the 12-inchby-24-inch acrylic he painted two years ago. “Really seeing a visual like that, especially for the kids, it helps bring them more understanding—more than reading an article.” Although his work could command recognition in shows of a larger scale, he chooses not to enter such competitions because they do not give back submitted paintings. “I want the paintings so that I can personally have them and use them at events,” Carnes says. “I like to say what I’m doing in the community definitely needs more awareness.” Lynne Barletta, the founder and executive director of the Visionary School of Arts—whom Christopher met a decade ago—says he is one of its success stories. “Over the years, Christopher has donated many hours of volunteer service to teach small children fine art in classes and camps,” Barletta says. “He is involved in his church, and he also teaches children’s chimes, Sunday school and helps to run the Vacation Bible School. He is pretty well rounded.” Why is clean water at the forefront of your causes? This is the forefront of my causes because clean water is the base for everything in a community. Once you have clean water in the community, it leads to a healthy community, an opportunity for education and building up an impactful government. How did you select which paintings to hang in the Osceola Street Café? I selected my paintings by picking my best and most recent pictures to hang on their walls.

Visionary Veterinarian DR. JOHANNA WADE MAKES MEDICAL ROUNDS IN A TRUCK, TREATING FARM ANIMALS FOR EVERYTHING FROM EAR INFECTIONS TO OVERGROWN TEETH. By Amy Woods | Photography by Lindsey Potter
W
ade Veterinary Services operates unlike any other animal-care practice on the Treasure Coast. Dr. Johanna Wade, who started the business one year ago in Palm City, is the reason. “I really liked the idea of doing farm calls,” says Dr. Wade, whose patients include goats, pigs, rabbits and sheep in addition to cats and dogs. “I see patients for annual wellness exams and vaccinations, various medical concerns and herd health examinations, among other things.”

She recently worked on a great horned owl whose injuries required the removal of its eye. “The great horned owl is doing wonderfully,” she says. “It was very sad because owls rely so much on their eyes, but she will hopefully be released back into the wild.” The 29-year-old University of Florida graduate knew she wanted to be a vet at a young age. Growing up in West Palm Beach, she kept a variety of creatures, including a chicken named Jojo. “My parents were either really crazy or really sweet, but
they said yes whenever I wanted to have a pet,” she says. In college, Dr. Wade could not decide whether to specialize in large or small animals, so she studied both. “I still couldn’t pick one,” she says. After graduating, she became a mobile, mixed-animal vet and now drives around town in her supply-stocked Ford F-150. “Instead of the hassle of loading your pets and taking them into a clinic, everything is done in the comfort of home or on the farm,” she says. “The stress that you see in animals in an office visit is usually not present. That’s part of the reason I love doing this so much because I get to be with the animals in their own environment.” How does your bachelor’s degree in wildlife ecology and conservation help you as a veterinarian? It instilled in me the value of wildlife and their habitats and how I can help promote the conservation of those species and our natural resources. It also helped me better understand the importance and power of observation, which I use every single day. I may look like I’m simply petting an animal or talking with an owner, but I am really soaking in every detail I can about my patients and their environment to better care for them. What is one of the more interesting encounters you have had with an animal? There is never a dull moment. I have had the opportunity to work with a Florida panther, showed clients how to do physical therapy on a baby peacock with limb paralysis and treated a famous feline you might have seen in TV commercials before. Have you ever been injured treating one of your patients? Thankfully, I have never been seriously injured while treating an animal, but we always have to be careful in this line of work. There have been lots of scrapes, bruises and sore muscles, though.

A
s a native Floridian, I have come to accept that 80-degree holidays with palm trees decked out in twinkling lights will forever be the reality of winter in the Sunshine State. To whet my appetite for a seasonal change, I traveled by car with friends to a destination straight off the cover of a paperback romance novel: the Great Smoky Mountains. At the corner of autumnal adventures and cozy digs was our retreat for the weekend, a stunning log cabin tucked away within The Preserve Resort in Wears Valley, Tennessee. The cabin, aptly named Rocky Top Retreat, was as charming as it was accommodating, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes Bob Ross would have emulated in a heartbeat. Sitting at an elevation of 1,750 feet, sweeping views of Pigeon Forge Valley owned one side of the cabin, while the grand Smokies took over the other. My friends and I spread out in the spacious three-story abode that boasted master suites on the first and second floors, as well as lofted sleeping areas above the second floor. The attached full-sized kitchen downstairs was fully equipped with all the works, including an oven, refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher and two coffee machines that poured steaming cups of java on chilly mornings. A jacuzzi on the first-floor deck was a delightfully unexpected feature worth taking advantage of.

Rocking chairs adorned the second floor’s balcony, offering a pristine view of wondrous colors far from sight back home in South Florida. It was connected directly to the game room, featuring a 42-inch flatscreen TV, pool table, foosball, arcade games and a massive bean bag chair reminiscent of childhood memories. The second floor’s master king suite included a jetted whirlpool tub and spacious shower. Floor-to-ceiling windows allowed natural light to drench the space in warmth amidst the 35-degree weather, all while giving a mere peek at the enamoring magnificence of our surroundings. Our cabin was a 45-minute drive from both Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, and despite the aching desire to stay cozied up in our new nook, the Gatlinburg SkyLift Park awaited. The skylift slowly ascends 1,800 feet up Crockett Mountain to drop passengers off at the Sky Deck. There, 360-degree views of Tennessee’s mountainous terrain hit like butterflies on a first date. Not for the faint of heart, the connecting SkyBridge suspends 140 feet at its midpoint, spanning 680 feet over a gaping valley. After working up an appetite, we indulged in a feast of Gatlinburg favorites, because moonshine and barbeque are to Tennessee as croquetas and cortaditos are
to South Florida. At both Ole Smoky Moonshine Holler and Sugarlands Distilling Company, $5 tastings were a no-brainer. Shot glasses half the size of my pinky were the perfect size for the 10-plus deliciously potent pours. At the recommendation of several locals, authentic Southern barbeque at Bennett’s Pit Bar-B-Que was also a must—after all, no trip to Tennessee is complete without fall-off-the-bone ribs, pulled pork, and spicy macaroni and cheese accompanied by biscuits, a tangy array of barbeque sauces and Southern sweet tea. One of the most meaningful parts of the trip was venturing through the visual masterpiece that was the Laurel Falls Trail. The warning signs of active bears in the area and steep mountainsides were hardly a concern, and the 1.3-mile trail surrounded by panoramic views of orange and yellow
allowed for quiet reflection amongst our usually talkative group. They say life is about the journey, not the destination. But on that two-hour hike alongside five of my dearest friends and the most marvelous mountain vistas, I was reminded that it’s far more than just a journey—what matters most are the relationships cultivated along the way that help carry you through. And if you ever choose to journey throughout the vast expanse of the Great Smoky Mountains, make sure the company you take is as wonderful as mine.

T
he tennis accomplishment Nicole Melichar is most proud of is playing both doubles finals at the 2018 Championships at Wimbledon. She won the Wimbledon Mixed Doubles title in 2018 alongside partner Alexander Peya, and she also reached the Women’s Doubles Final with Květa Peschke. “I pride myself on fighting for every point and never giving up when I am on the court,” Melichar says. During the off-season, she participates in exhibition tennis events to help raise money for charity. Alongside her full-time tennis career, she is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in communications online at Indiana University East with hopes of delving into sports commentating.

ince she was 13 years old, Lisha DeSantis has had a passion for volunteering. For the past few years, she has been an active member of the Junior League of Martin County (JLMC) and is now the Vice President of the JLMC. With her team at work, the Fort Pierce resident has doubled the company’s revenue over the last four years. As the Director of Marketing at Convey Health Solutions, DeSantis does a hybrid of marketing, sales, business development and product management to connect with prospects, meet their business goals and generate revenue.

s the founder and president of SaltWrap, Scott Hogan is hands-on in every aspect of the company, from taking on the role of chief product formulator to publishing original content on saltwrap.com. “After suffering several sports-related and other injuries, I started publishing content on

saltwrap.com to help other people overcome physical setbacks and injuries,” Hogan says. And that’s the Palm City resident’s mission with SaltWrap: to help people overcome physical obstacles, recover from injury and live their best pain-free life. Not only does his business help improve people’s lives, but it allows him to stay close to home with his wife and two kids.
ANTHONY COLLETTA, 37 Director of Community Outreach, The First Tee
I
t all started with a question: Why don’t kids play golf? It was an important enough inquiry that would lead to the creation of The First Tee, an organization with a mission to offer both golf and life lessons to young people. Helping to cultivate relationships with various charitable organizations to introduce the game to today’s youth is Anthony Colletta, the director of community outreach. Since 2015, the Stuart resident has had the opportunity to coach an after school First Tee golf program once a week at 10th Street Community Center. He also recently took part in organizing a Special Olympics golf program for athletes living in Mar-
tin County, along with a golf program for retired military veterans in St. Lucie County, all at no cost to participants.

B
eing a photojournalist for CBS12 means Savannah Resnik is the eyes, ears and voice for the newsroom to tell the stories of those in the community. “I am most proud of covering a reported case of neglected horses that needed [to be] rescued,” Resnik says. “Thanks to investigative journalism and pushing for answers, the owner was arrested, and the horses were rescued.” When the Stuart resident isn’t behind the camera, she is a volunteer at Florida TRAC in Indiantown where she helps exercise and retrain off-the-track thoroughbreds to find a new career and home after their time racing.

He serves on the board for the Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast with a role of helping raise money for the museum through event coordination. He also volunteers at the annual career preparation workshop in The Village of Indiantown where he educates the participants on the importance of saving and investing.

A
s the event manager at her small business, Katrina Resch works with many not-for-profit companies and companies benefitting non-profits. Through her planning, these events have been able to raise a lot of money for charities. The Palm City resident also created her own event, Babes and Bubbly, where like-minded ladies can “sip, laugh and dance.” On top of work, Resch can’t say no to volunteering and often does so at her kid’s school or as an alumna of LEADERship Martin County.

breast cancer survivor herself, Janet Palmer founded Random Acts of Pink to financially assist cancer patients with their medical bills. She made the organization with a 100 percent volunteer effort to keep costs at a minimum and has been involved with raising more than $25,000 for local cancer patients. The Port St. Lucie resident understands the patient’s view, from getting the diagnosis to the all-clear, and can communicate with understanding the physical and emotional toll, along with the financial stress, treatment puts on patients as well as their families.

ichael Robbins spends his days inspiring and training the next generation of musicians on the Treasure Coast, some of whom have performed in Disney, Universal Studios, All-State, Artsiest and several local parades. The Stuart resident is scheduled to conduct 18 concerts on the Treasure Coast for the 2019-2020 season. Outside of work, he is the conductor of the Treasure Coast Community Singers, the Treasure Coast Youth Choir, the board chairman of the New Gardens Band and Indian River Pops Orchestra as well as the assistant conductor and French Horn player with the Indian River Pops Orchestra.

His latest project is “Cooking with Howard,” during which he goes to New Monrovia and teaches kids how to cook. Two families have even donated plots of property for his food movement. “I teach [kids] how to grow food, teach them the importance of compost piles,” he says. “I push ‘from the Earth.’” He also sits on the board at the Banner Lake Club in Hobe Sound and is on the Advisory Council Board for the Boys & Girls Club of Hobe Sound. He’s also the recent recipient of the Future Leader Award from the NAACP.

yan Abernethy knows the impact his career has on his clients. In her role, she helps businesses of all sizes with everything from aligning their marketing strategies to managing all of their community outreach, including educational seminars, volunteer activities and philanthropy. She enjoys living on the Treasure Coast for its strong sense of community and also works for two restaurants—The Chef ’s Table and Southfork Kitchen & Bar. “I think this area is what you make of it,” she says. “Opportunity is everywhere if you look.”

s the first Hispanic elected to the City Council, Jolien Caraballo is proud of her Cuban heritage. Caraballo has been a part of several committees and organizations. Shapiro is also a member of Women Supporting the Arts and IMPACT 100 Martin. “My studio is a hub for creativity and celebration of the arts here in downtown Stuart’s Arts & Entertainment District,” she says. The salon is committed to raising money and awareness for charities in the area such as the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast and Molly’s House. Her deepest joy is raising her 11-year-old daughter, Giana, in Jensen Beach where she finds peace at the ocean. According to Shapiro, “there is nothing the salty air and dip in the sea can’t heal.”

tuart resident Jessica Addams is the owner of deLITEful Kitchen, an organic, local, farm-to-table health food restaurant and catering company. ara Vaughn Baldwin is passionate about her community. So much so, that her dedication to Operation 300 led it to being chosen as the Martin County Business Development Board 2019 Non-Profit of the Year. “I am proud that our organization has built a reputation of honor, excellence and integrity,” Baldwin says. Recently, Operation 300 and her family helped lead the Treasure Coast Abacos Relief Project, where they worked with hundreds of volunteers to bring much-needed aid to the people of the Abacos over seven weeks. She’s been married to her college sweetheart for 16 years with whom she has two daughters.

s a multi-generational Floridian on both sides of his family, Merritt Matheson makes every decision through the lens of how it will affect all future generations. As the City of Stuart commissioner, Matheson worked toward advocacy against toxic discharges into the St. Lucie River. The Stuart resident, along with the help of others, is excited to see a shift in the way Florida’s regulatory agencies look at water quality and hopes the St. Lucie River can be restored to its natural state as one of the most biodiverse waterways on the planet.

f you live in Indiantown, chances are you will recognize Guyton Stone. As the mayor of the Village Indiantown, Stone’s days consist of overseeing financial decisions to planning the future for the locals. He also is the owner of Guyton Industries where he brings customers’ imaginations to life with quality craftsmanship. At 34, the former Jamaica resident moved to the Treasure Coast in 1999 and became one of the first council members in the Village of Indiantown. He was awarded Small Business of the Year in 2018 and helped reestablish the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in Indiantown, which he serves as a scoutmaster and cubmaster.

part from her everyday duties, Kia Fontaine is proud to have developed and implemented The Lyric’s Summer Camp. The camp allows children to explore the arts while learning practical skills and character-building techniques. Fontaine provides access to not only the arts at The Lyric Theatre but an escape from everyday life in a medium of artistic expression that elevates and educates. The Fort Pierce resident is also a part of the Downtown Fort Pierce Farmers Market Board of Directors, Heathcote Botanical Garden’s Bonsai Bash Committee and a volunteer for Main Street Fort Pierce Historic Ghost Tours.

f there’s one thing that’s important to James Carroll, it’s ensuring his commitment to the community is authentic. “It’s been my goal in any endeavor to understand the person, the goal and offer a solution that correlates with their character and business practices,” says the 31-year-old Hobe Sound resident. He developed and marketed an app you might have on your phone; it’s called NH Voter Guide and allows cities to view candidate stances on issues, fundraising totals, contact information and biographies. When not developing apps or helping businesses grow, Carroll invests time with the Young Professionals of Martin County, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Martin County GOP, the Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce, Palm City Chamber of Commerce and the Tequesta Business Association.

or Elise Raffa, her role as communications and membership manager means looking to the future in preserving the arts and getting young people involved for years to come. She prides herself on being part of the Arts Council for the last five years, and “being able to bring my millennial perspective to various meeting tables. Since 2017, Raffa has curated Courtroom Sessions, a contemporary art exhibition and music showcase held at the historic Court House Cultural Center in Downtown Stuart. “The arts are such an enormous passion of mine, and I want to make sure to do my part in keeping them here,” she says.

rowing up, Elexcia Savarese-Fleming was an avid teen performer at StarStruck Theatre where she spent most of her after-school hours, weekends and summers. She also worked at the theatre for a year after graduating before taking on the role as a senior sales specialist at Teva Pharmaceuticals CNS. Her proudest accomplishment to date has been winning two top five percent titles in the three years she’s been in the President’s Club (top 10 percent in sales) and, at press time, was on pace to finish again in the top five percent for 2019. Savarese-Fleming married her high school sweetheart, Brooks, which she says reminds her “how rewarding it is coming from a town on the Treasure Coast.”
ANGELA HOFFMAN, 35

W
hile she previously helped grow the Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce financially and in its geographic reach, Angela Hoffman’s latest achievement has been holding the title of chief advancement officer for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County. Recently, she helped secure funding for a food truck culinary program that is set to launch this summer, which will utilize the produce growing in local Boys and Girls Club gardens. “Advancing these initiatives, garnering community support and helping our team design creative solutions to respond to the changing needs of our members is by far the most exciting part of my position,” Hoffman says. She’s excited to continue accelerating the work of the Business Development Board to strengthen Martin County’s economy while serving as the president. When not working, Hoffman enjoys family time at the beach as well as attending parades and the Festival of the Arts.

s the owner and financial advisor for his own business, Southern Magnolia Investment Management, Sam Bruning runs its day-to-day operations. Doing so has been a step outside of his comfort zone after working at Fortune 500 companies for 15 years. Despite his career switch, one constant has been his life on the Treasure Coast for more than 30 years. “The things I enjoy most about the Treasure Coast are the close friends I have made since moving here in 1987, the weather, the history, the food and restaurants, the economy and the great people I meet on a daily basis,” Bruning says.

Mayor, City of Stuart; Director, Farm Operations for CoLab Farms
A
t press time, Mike Meier was recently elected as the Mayor of Stuart, making him the city’s youngest in 63 years. Prior, he held the title of city commissioner where he focused on building a sustainable future for the town, such as increasing housing options, bringing in jobs and preparing for the effects of climate change. He also holds the title of Director of Farm Operations for CoLab Farms where he oversees construction of new greenhouses that will increase the company’s production capabil-
ity. In 2014, he co-founded Stuart’s first urban farm, market and restaurant, formerly known as Ground Floor Farm. “I’m proud that our business helped bring more energy and vibrancy to the new arts and entertainment district south of historic downtown,” Meier says.
KATE CITRONE, 24 Professional Runway Model
A
professional model herself, Kate Citrone created model workshops for young aspiring models to encourage creativity, build self-confidence and learn professionalism. In the past, she has also volunteered with the St. Lucie County P.A.L. Center and with various high school programs. While she relocates seasonally between New York, Florida and California, the Stuart resident loves the palm trees and sandy beaches of the Treasure Coast. As a model, Citrone’s most important roles are to build long-lasting professional relationships with her clients and connect brands to their consumers. On top of a modeling career, she is also an aspiring author.

A
few months after HW Interiors’ owners and principles Lisa Hynes and Heather Weisz finished transforming their client’s Palm Beach Polo and Country Club home, they received some surprising news. “Someone literally rang their [client’s] doorbell and offered them a significant amount over what they had paid and renovated,” Hynes recalls. “So they sold it, fully furnished and toothbrush-ready, took the profit and bought a half-acre of land they
wanted to build on, and that’s the house in the Cypress Island community we’re talking about now.” Before embarking on the remodel, Hynes and Weisz, who hail from Connecticut and New York, respectively, had already established a social connection with their clients, Jen and Kevin Johnson, a couple with four children between the ages of 5 and 17. “We ran in the same circles, our kids took dance classes together, so they knew what we did,” Hynes says.

The six-month enhancement required myriad updates, including tearing down walls, modifying flooring and tossing out heavy wood finishes, an activity Weisz has dubbed “de-Tuscanizing.” Similar to Frankenstein’s molecular reawakening, a necessary injection of pared-down elegance gave each space a new lease on life. The Johnsons weren’t the only ones impressed with the sublime redesign. Once the subsequent owners had moved in, they commissioned the duo to realize a meditation room and complete a few additional projects upstairs. When it came time to discuss room schematics and mood boards for the new build on Cypress Island—a project that lasted nearly two years—they presented Jen with past works of their own and others to gauge the style and colors that tugged at her heartstrings. “At that point,” Hynes says, “she can say, ‘I’m not feeling this or I love it, just go run with it.’” She continues, “The reason we feel her projects come out so amazing is [because] she really has faith in us and trusts that what comes from Heather’s brain is going to be beautiful.” A full-time, stay-at-home mother, Jen warmed up to the idea of working in some of the same functionality and transitional style that had echoed through the couple’s former residence in Maidstone, but she had one caveat: with four growing children, the rooms needed to be kid-friendly. After they received the green light to proceed, the design duo collaborated with the architect from Yellowfin Builders, a West Palm Beach-based firm specializing in custom equestrian homes, to bring the couple’s lakeside fantasy to life. The gently winding floor plan Weisz conceived takes full advantage of the lush, waterfront landscape and showcases a successive series of open and airy spaces that make enticing gathering spots for the family and their guests. In the formal living room across from the foyer, Weisz mixed one-of-a-kind accouterments, such as a rare Turkish rug and a pair of vintage, reclaimed wood-carved doors mounted on acrylic that serve as cocktail tables, with more contemporary selections, like the Greco sofas in graphite from the Roberta Schilling Collection. Equine photographs, shot in black and white by Holly Roesch, hang above in tribute to Wellington’s iconic horse culture while low-profile pieces,

such as a tufted ottoman in pseudo-suede fabric, offer clean site lines of the wet edge swimming pool outside. At night, concrete fire bowls light up so “when you walk in through the front door and see the fire and pool, it’s very cool,” Hynes says. Adjacent to the front door, a formal dining room stands ready for a bacchanal feast with a custom, black-stained, Ash wood table that seats 12. Fibrous linen window treatments, embroidered in warm tones of taupe, brown and gray, display dark, oil-rubbed hardware and acrylic finials that reference the crystal in the wall sconces and Currey & Co. wrought-iron chandelier. Across the way, a wine room primped with a feature wall

fashioned from custom-colored woods from the Jaime Beckwith Collection houses the couple’s favorite vintages. Sleek bayou acacia wood floors procured locally from a supplier in Wellington etch a path to the family room, a seismic space with a 35-foot footprint. “Since the outdoors are so lovely and they [clients] like to entertain and have tons of kids over swimming all the time, Heather had the idea to have two sectionals mirroring each other,” says Hynes, “so one kind of looks outside at the beautiful landscaping, and the other faces the television.” Under Weisz’s gimlet watch, the ceiling beams were given gravitas and stained three times, flecked with gray and white paint and smoked out with a brush until they achieved the level of warmth she wanted. Two separate sets of oversized glass sliders blend the indoors with
the outside, when opened, and lead to the pool area and an outdoor living space with a fireplace, televisions, seating, and an island kitchen. Staying in step with Jen’s vision for a bright, light-drenched kitchen that locks in plenty of functionality, Hynes and Weisz selected a color palette that wove in pops of navy in timeless shades. On the backsplash, 3D, geometric tiles bring a touch of edginess and complement the custom, Shaker-style cabinetry. Kid-friendly counter chairs with easy-to-wipe-clean leather hunker beneath one of two sapienstone island countertops. To add an extra layer of convenience when the couple entertains or hosts out-of-towners, the space is endowed with a built-in breakfast bar complete with a panel-ready, under-counter ice machine, a second dishwasher and refrigerated

drawers that store cold drinks and snacks. In the first-floor master bedroom, they created a luxurious, resort-inspired retreat where the Johnsons could escape to slumber and disconnect. Walls are covered in neutral gray grasscloth while pops of white in the linen drapes and the side chairs at the foot of the Bernhardt canopy bed pull the eye around the room and heavenward toward the intricate coffered ceiling. Hanging pendants free up space on the nightstands and switches located by the bed easily turn overhead lights on and off. Past the sliding glass doors lays another one of the home’s highlights. “Walk along the cast stone pavers floating in beautiful green Zoysia grass, and you’ll land straight into the Jacuzzi,” Weisz says. “My idea was the kids are upstairs playing, and mom and dad could sit in the Jacuzzi with a glass of Champagne and enjoy that view.” Past Jen’s makeup station, an extra spacious walk-in closet, and a small breakfast nook fitted with a small fridge and hanging shelves, a short hallway leads to the Carrara and Stratuario marble-imbued master bath. The sink, designed by Hynes and Weisz, is wrapped in a stainless steel veneer and fitted with acrylic handles, flab front drawers and a marble waterfall countertop edge. Three different tiles form the back feature wall and a small-format mosaic adds texture to the wet floor in the shower. Toto smart toilets and rain and waterfall showerheads lend to the sumptuously wellappointed scene. On the second floor, where the children’s rooms are located, sits a large open-concept room at the top of the stairs. Conceived with the kids and overnight visitors in mind, the sunlight-dappled space harbors a sideboard with a table and chairs where anyone can work, paint or play cards. On the other, a comfy sitting area awaits with a linen and walnut wood sofa, a teak QS Le Main chair and a flatscreen television perfect for a movie or game night. “We definitely wanted everything to be more playful and whimsical here,” Heather says, deftly summing up the HW Interiors way.
