Magic moments
© LILA PHOTO
A
s a little kid, I had this thing about Christmas: I would not open a single present until Christmas morning. I remember my parents would allow my older sister and me to stay up late the night before and open one gift, an offer my sister happily accepted. But I’d run off to bed in a snit, insisting on waiting until the next day. Sure, I was excited to tear into my presents and see what new toys were hiding under the tree. But there was something magical to me about Christmas morning. And I didn’t want to ruin that specialness. Hey, I was a strange kid. The point is, regardless of all the oddities of 2020, the holidays are about embracing loved ones, cherishing the memories you hold dear, and celebrating the moments that are magic to you. To some, this holiday season may feel less “spectacular” than usual, with fewer festive fêtes happening and perhaps not as many gifts under the tree. But the truth is, the spectacular often lies in the ordinary moments—with family, with friends, with pets...with love. On that note, there’s no reason you can’t kick things up a notch at your cozy at-home shindig. Put on your holiday best, whip up a yuletide cocktail, and celebrate! In this issue, we offer some inspiration to get you in the spirit, including shimmery makeup looks (page 20), great gift ideas (page 36), and sparkly fashion and accessories (plus a few adorable animal models who need a home—just sayin’—page 40). Also be sure to flip through our cover story, “Intimate Affair,” featuring hostess with the mostess Dana Small. The designer extraordinaire and owner of Matilda’s in downtown Stuart threw the perfect pre-holiday gathering at her home for a few of her closest friends, proving that small can be more than spectacular. Check out some photos and details about the party beginning on page 28. Here’s to eating, drinking, being merry—and loving one another. Cheers! Peace and blessings,

Do you want to hire a normal divorce lawyer? In “How to Hide $400 Million” The New York Times says, “Fisher was not a normal family lawyer. Early in his career, at the height of the South Florida drug wars, he worked for the United States attorney’s office in Miami, prosecuting cocaine smugglers and money launderers.” Fisher Potter Hodas, PL, is a law firm that concentrates its practice on complex, high-stakes divorce cases involving corporate executives, closely held business owners, professional athletes, celebrities, and wealthy families. n

Curious to see how some of your neighbors decorate inside their homes for the holidays? You can get a peek at some of Stuart’s most gorgeous interiors by joining the Woman’s Club of Stuart’s twelfth annual Holiday Home Tour. Usually held in person, this iteration will pivot to a virtual platform on December 6, with six homes displayed online. “Homeowners will tell their stories of special family decorations and other decor of interest,” notes Jo Baxter, president of the Woman’s Club of Stuart. There will also be an online auction featuring holiday decor and additional items. A VIP preview
on December 4 will take place at the organization’s presenting sponsors: Audi, Maserati/Alfa-Romeo, and Infiniti Stuart. The preview allows nine guests plus a Woman’s Club hostess to attend one of three time slots (3 p.m., 5 p.m., or 7 p.m.) to view the Holiday Home Tour while safely distanced in the conference rooms at the dealerships. Snacks and holiday goodie bags will be provided. $20/ general admission,$35/VIP preview; womansclubofstuart.com; 772.288.3227

At Your Service PORT ST. LUCIE RESIDENT THEORA “BUNNY” WEBB CHANNELS HER EXTENSIVE GLOBAL EXPERIENCE TO HELP LOCAL COMMUNITIES THRIVE
I
f you’ve ever met Theora Webb, you probably know her as Bunny. “I don’t have a good story behind it,” laughs the 79-year-old Port St. Lucie resident. “From the day I was born, I was called Bunny, and nobody seems to remember why.” In the late 1940s, assigned to serve in public information as part of the Marshall Plan at the behest of President Truman, Webb’s father moved the family from Washington, D.C. to Paris, where they lived for eight years. Young Bunny attended French schools and soon became fluent in the language. Upon the family’s return to America, she graduated from high school at the age of 16. As an adult, she decided to pursue a path similar to her father’s, working in various communications roles over the years. As founder and president of a boutique consulting firm in Washington, D.C., she provided counsel to clients in corporate, government, and trade-association sectors; she later served as director of public affairs for the International Trade Administration in the U.S. Department of Commerce and as director of diversity, work-life, and community relations for
16
Duracell Business Management Group, a division of The Gillette Company. Today, Webb remains committed to building mutually beneficial community/corporate partnerships through her presence on several nonprofit boards, including Impact 100 St. Lucie and the Cleveland Clinic Florida Regional Board. Her extensive background also aides in her role as board secretary for The Community Foundation Martin St. Lucie, where her duties include developing policy, ensuring compliance to government and industry rules and regulations, and recruiting philanthropic members. During the pandemic, TCF responded to shifting community needs, coalescing local funding into two funder consortiums to evaluate grant applications associated with COVID-related services. “The consortiums were initially focused on funding basic needs caused by the escalating number of clients and has continued to field grant applications related to adjusted and enhanced health and human services,” says Webb. One project she is currently working on with her fellow staff members is TCF’s application for accreditation from The National Standards

for U.S. Foundations. Receiving accreditation, says Webb, “will take The Community Foundation Martin St. Lucie to the next level, assuring the community of our integrity, our application of best practices, and our effective and efficient use of time and talent in serving both the philanthropic and nonprofit communities across our two counties and beyond.” Webb says she has lived “everywhere” but loves life as a retired Port St. Lucie resident. “I had an aunt and uncle who lived in Port St.
Lucie, right off of Prima Vista, and we used to come down and visit them so my husband could play golf,” shares the recently widowed Webb. “Then one day, instead of turning right to go back to their house, we turned left and came into PGA Village. We bought property that very weekend and built a house.” That was in January 2000— and Webb has never looked back. Her favorite part of living in the area, she says, is the golf. “But I so wish I played better,” she says. ❖

Staying on Track 5 WAYS TO MAINTAIN HEALTHY EATING HABITS DURING THE HOLIDAYS by MELISSA PUPPO
1
DEVELOP A MANTRA Create a statement that empowers you to make healthy choices during times of weakness. Jennifer Tomko, a clinical psychotherapist at Clarity Health in Jupiter, suggests mantras such as “My choice today creates my tomorrow,” “Food is a fuel, not a reward,” “I can overcome my own impulses,” and “I am stronger than this temptation.” Leave your mantra on sticky notes in places you pass by often, such as on your bathroom mirror or computer monitor.
2
CREATE GOAL REMINDERS Placing goal reminders in places where you focus your attention can help you stay consistent during the holidays. For example, if one of your goals is not to overindulge so you can maintain your weight through the holidays, you might
18
use a photo of yourself looking fit and toned as your cell phone wallpaper to inspire consistency. “Considering how often we look at our phones, it can serve as a reminder of the 5 ultimate reward for your efforts,” says Tomko.
3
E AT CLEAN To avoid weight gain and/or feeling bloated, Dr. Deborah DeMarta—a colorectal surgeon and functional medicine specialist at the Institute of Health & Wellness in Stuart—is keen on avoiding inflammatory foods, many of which are genetically modified and contain artificial dyes, preservatives, or nitrates. “Inflammatory foods cause a leaky gut, weight gain, and cellular

5 dehydration that make us feel tired and dragged down,” notes DeMarta. Instead, move toward gluten-free and dairy-free alternatives. For example, cook with coconut or rice milk to make mashed potatoes. “I use MCT oil as a replacement for butter,” shares DeMarta.
4
PAY ATTENTION TO PORTION DISTORTION ’Tis the season… that many of us forget to follow proper portion control. To ensure you stay on track, DeMarta recommends using the palm of your hand as an indicator of protein size. Keep carbs to half a cup max at a time, and fill up more with fruits and veggies. “I recommend eating lower glycemic fruits like melons and organic
DON’T IGNORE YOUR GUT Paying attention to gut health is also vital during the stressful holiday season. “Stress can cause a permeable gut and decrease our immune system,” says DeMarta. This is why she says it is important to buffer our digestive system with fiber, probiotics, and digestive enzymes and to drink adequate water. “The gut is 80 percent of our immune system, so keeping it healthy helps the body bounce back after a holiday binge,” she says. She suggests taking a fiber supplement, a probiotic, and a good fatty acid daily (but opt only for those that are CGMPcertified, a label given to the quality systems used by the USDA). ❖
INGREDIENTS: 1 cup white rice flour 1 cup confectioners’ sugar ½ cup sweet rice flour ½ cup potato starch ½ cup almond meal 1 tsp. xanthan gum ½ tsp. salt ½ lb. unsalted butter, sliced 1 large egg 1 large egg white 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract ½ tsp. pure almond extract Gluten-free sugar sprinkles Small gluten-free candies Candied cherries PREPARATION: Combine white rice flour, confectioners’ sugar, sweet rice flour, potato starch, almond meal, xanthan gum, and salt in a food processor fitted with a steel blade and blend for 5 seconds. Add butter to the work bowl and process, using on-and-off pulsing, until mixture resembles coarse meal. Combine egg, egg white, vanilla, and almond extract in a small cup and whisk well. Drizzle liquid into the work bowl and pulse about 10 times or until stiff dough forms. Divide dough in half and wrap each half in plastic wrap. Press dough into a pancake shape. Refrigerate for one hour or until firm (up to two days). Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Press dough through a cookie press onto the baking sheets. Decorate with sugar sprinkles, candies, and candied cherries as desired, and bake cookies for 10-12 minutes or until edges are brown. Cool cookies for two minutes on the baking sheet, then transfer to a baking rack to cool completely.

THE SUNSHINE STATE MAY BE LIONIZED FOR ITS DAWN-TO-DUSK WATER ACTIVITIES, BUT THE FUN DOESN’T HAVE TO END AT NIGHTFALL. ENJOY THESE AQUATIC EXPERIENCES WHEN THE SUN GOES TO SLEEP. b y K E R RY S H O R R
NATURAL GLOW Ever hear of comb jellies? While often mistaken for jellyfish, these gelatinous fish radiate a green-blue luminance when the water is stirred. You will find plenty of them on one of Get Up and Go Kayaking’s glow-in-the-dark tours. Departing from Stan Blum Memorial Boat Launch on North Causeway Island in Fort Pierce, this two-hour-plus excursion takes you down the channel to the mangrove tunnels in Fort Pierce Inlet State Park. As you propel through the water in a clear kayak (single or tandem), you’ll likely spy the jellies as well as other marine life such as mullet and snook, which are attracted to the colorful under-lighting of the kayaks. During a stop at the sandbar, look out for stingray and pufferfish—plus, you’ll have the opportunity to touch a comb jelly (don’t worry, they don’t sting). Relax on a sunset cruise around Jupiter Island.
CRUISE PATROL Sit back, relax, and take in the sights on a Conch Cruise around nearby Jupiter Island that leaves from the Jupiter Inlet Marina (right behind U-Tiki) just before sunset. Captains will shuttle you past the estate-riddled shoreline and point out where many of the island’s most prestigious residents call home, including legendary athletes, award-winning entertainers, and the reclusively rich. Sip your favorite cocktail (BYOB; bottled water provided) as you drift past the Jupiter Lighthouse, Dubois Park, and other places of interest and encounter native fauna such as blue heron, snowy egrets, and sea cows from the comfort of your cruiser. If you’re short on time, opt for a quick jaunt around the Jupiter Inlet—perfect for an evening cruise before dinner. $120/onehour private sunset cruise, $10/person for 30-minute inlet tour; jupitercruises.com; 561.797.9979
DOLPHIN DAZE If swimming with dolphins is still on your bucket list, sample the next best thing at Salty’s Water Sports in Fort Pierce. During a one-hour evening Jet Ski (or two-hour pontoon boat) tour along the Indian River Lagoon, you can get up close and personal with the friendly mammals. Every year, the 156-mile estuary welcomes hundreds of wild bottlenose dolphins that come to breed and raise their young during the fall and winter months. Set against a tapestry of purple-red hues, the excursions follow various dolphin pods (from a safe distance so as not to disturb them). Close encounters with the mammals are common, as many Get friendly with wild bottlenose dolphins along recognize the tour leaders’ vocal cadences and may the Indian River Lagoon. demonstrate their excitement by clicking, whistling, and even leaping out of the water. Have a camera handy so you’re ready to snap should one decide to swim up and say hello! These memorable outings are customizable and can include side trips to Dynamite Point or Wesley’s Island, where you’ll have time to swim or relax on the beach. $160/one-hour Jet Ski tour, $267.50/two-hour pontoon boat; saltyswatersports.com; 772.448.4516 ❖

Rediscover the Elliott THE ELLIOTT MUSEUM REOPENS TO THE PUBLIC WITH EXCITING PROGRAMMING SLATED FOR THE NEW YEAR by MELISSA PUPPO
L
ike many other cultural institutions, Stuart’s Elliott Museum paused its programming during the onset of the pandemic last spring. But its team, helmed by President and CEO Rob Steele, took the 111 days of closure to breathe new life into the museum’s offerings. “We utilized this time to enhance the functionality of our 50,000-squarefoot space and to create an operational platform dedicated to agility,” says Steele. The museum has adapted to allow for a continual state of change to keep fresh offerings for guests. “Visitors can still enjoy our popular exhibit opening gatherings that were a regular occurrence pre-COVID, and the broad spectrum of lectures, meditations, music, and discussions will soon be a welcome part of our reality again,” he adds. Below, we break down a few new highlights you won’t want to miss. ON DISPLAY “We have two new featured art gallery spaces, and we already have a waiting list of local, regional, and national talent to share with our guests,” shares Steele. The first gallery showcases part of the museum’s permanent collection and

The artwork illustrates the “majesty, force, and timelessness of the natural environment,” notes Doreen Poreba, public relations representative for the Historical Society of Martin County. Ogle at displays of pineapple plantations, the savannahs and seas, and more. Showing until January 4 is Portfolios— Eclectic Artists and Art at the Elliott, which highlights the work of Stuart-based artists including Dale Beam, Linda Geary, and Bruce Wells, among others. The artwork will be available for purchase, and a portion of profits will benefit the museum. Guests who have never experienced the Elliott Museum should make a point to view a locals’ favorite permanent exhibition, Wheels of Change, which discusses the impact of commercial and personal transportation. These “everyman” vehicles were once owned and cherished by small business owners, as they wanted to create a more professional presence for themselves. Peek at more than 50 vehicles perched through the museum’s three-level car racking system, which also features a robotic tray and turntable to get up-close views of these timeless vehicles.
3D printed figures
GETTING CRAFTY Now through January 31, the Elliott welcomes guests to explore their creative side with a new Markerspace Lab featuring eight computer stations, four 3D printers, and two die-cut machines. Participants can create animated movies and engineering projects in addition to designs that are sent to the inhouse 3D printers and laser cutters. The exhibit will also feature work on loan from the Lighthouse ArtCenter, showcasing a whimsical gallery of madcap characters from six of the world’s leading animation artists. HOLISTIC HEALING One of the more self-reflective offerings is a new collaboration with Deena Rahill, founder of HI Mindfulness Forums. Rahill offers sound meditation (also known as sound bath, sound vibration, sound healing, or sound therapy) sessions to organizations that would like to help employees balance their well-being. Both virtual and in-person sessions at the museum are available. Visit the website for more information. 825 NE Ocean Blvd., Stuart, hsmc-fl.com; 772.225.1961 ❖

exico’s Yucatán Peninsula is best known for its prolific sparkling beaches, but some of its greatest treasures lie inland. Case in point: Chablé Yucatán, a stunning, 40-villa, 750-acre wellness retreat on the grounds of a former sisal plantation in the blink-and-you-might-miss-it Mayan town of Chocholá. Born from the ruins of a nineteenth-century hacienda, the high-design hotel mingles glass elements with archaeological remains alongside colorful, colonial-inspired structures. Chablé’s freestanding casitas and family villas are emphatically modern and minimalist, framed by limestone and dark woods and homing in on the beauty of the surrounding natural foliage. Lush gardens and crystal walls foster an impression of jungle immersion indoors, especially within the expansive bathroom, where double sinks and rainfall showers appear to nurture the earth from which the plants grow. Outdoors, a white linen hammock

sways over each casita’s private swimming pool, and a shaded daybed offers respite from the blazing Mexican sun. At the property’s core lies a jungle-clad cenote (limestone sinkhole) around which a world-class spa has been erected. With 14 treatment rooms, a full-scale fitness center, a temescal (traditional Mayan sweat lodge), an advanced hydrotherapy circuit, and an exquisite marble infinity pool, the Chablé Spa comprises the heart and soul of the property’s wellness philosophy. Treatments and ceremonial rituals are rooted in Mayan tradition and the healing powers of the sacred cenote. Between these culture-infused experiences, meditation sessions, sunrise yoga classes, and other endeavors in holistic healing, physical rejuvenation, and mental cleansing, it’s not uncommon for guests to visit the spa twice or thrice daily. Contrasting the contemporary casitas
and fashionable spa, property grounds are strewn with vestiges of the site’s nineteenthcentury incarnation: Original rock-hewn archways remain, as do remnants of stone buildings, many now overgrown by snaking tree roots. The dramatic juxtaposition of old and new climaxes at Ixi’im, Chablé’s signature restaurant helmed by acclaimed Chef Jorge Vallejo, whose Mexico City restaurant, Quintonil, was named one of the world’s best. At Ixi’im, glass panes complete an original hacienda building, embedded in unfinished stone, illuminated by high-tech lighting and a subterranean firepit at the entrance. Inside, the 200-year-old, black-and-white-tiled floors have been restored to their original grandeur, while decorative sisal ropes hang from the ceiling, nodding to the past, and shelves showcase the restaurant’s 3,000-plus vintage tequila bottles spanning centuries. (This is, in fact, one of the largest private tequila collections in the world.) The cuisine incorporates Mayan techniques and ingredients, Michelin-star prowess, and
a health-conscious slant resulting in memorable dining experiences that are a testament to Chef Vallejo’s global fame. Other meals at Chablé are enjoyed primarily at Ki’ol, a more casual poolside restaurant that Vallejo also oversees. Of course, you could leave the premises to dine or engage in other activities; Yucatán’s historic capital city of Mérida, its international airport (serviced by direct flights from Miami), and archaeology headliners like Uxmal are an average of an hour away. But the sublime food, zen vibe, and enticements of the hacienda make it difficult to justify ever leaving the property. Plus, the entire point of Chablé Yucatán is to escape the world outside and discover— or rediscover—your personal mental and physical best. chablehotels.com ❖

INTIMATE Affair Matilda’s owner Dana Small hosts a pre-holiday luncheon at her Stuart home for a few of her closest friends
By Michelle Lee Ribeiro | Photography By Jerry Rabinowitz When it comes to throwing a top-notch, elegant, laid-back soirée, Dana Small has it down. The Stuart-based designer and owner of Matilda’s has mastered the art of coastal, carefree chic. “I would love to be living in the Bahamas,” she says. “And I always want my house to feel like you’re in the islands. I’ve spent numerous Christmases on Harbor Island, and everything is very simple there. I like to say ‘KISS’—keep it simply stylish.” This season, Small decided to throw a festive, pre-holiday ladies’ luncheon for some of her dearest gal pals. “These are my lifelong friends,” she says. “I’ve lived in Stuart for 20 years, and I’ve known
all of them since I moved here. They’re my people.” The shindig also provided everyone a rare opportunity in these pandemic days to get dressed up. “Entertaining at home has never been more relevant and real,” says Small. “It’s nice to spice up your dinner table—and your life—with friends who mean the most to you. I love doing things for friends and showing them how much I appreciate them. You need your little posse.” On these pages, see the luncheon in full swing—and meet the most important member of Small’s posse, her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Calypso (a.k.a. “Party Dog”).

Soup’s On! For this luncheon, Small wanted to keep the menu light. She whipped up this cream of asparagus soup topped with parsley, roasted peppers, and asparagus tips. The soup was accompanied by a mixed green salad, as well as cucumber tea sandwiches from Chantal’s. “I've been using Chantal’s for all of my events for 20 years,” she says of the Stuart-based catering company.
Signature Sips “There is always a signature cocktail when you come to my house,” says Small. When guests enter her home, she greets them at the wicker bar (pictured at right), which is set with the cocktail of the day/evening. For this affair, she opted for a DIY Champagne bar. Guests had the option of Prosecco or rosé, which they could infuse with rosemary pineapple, blood orange pomegranate, or mint. Pre-lunch snacks were served with the cocktails (turn the page for more details about the appetizers).

Bits and Bites Before moving into the dining room for lunch, Small and her friends caught up over cocktails and snacks in the living room. Light bites were catered by The Board Babes, who created these drool-worthy charcuterie boards featuring fresh seasonal fruits such as raspberries and cranberries, salmon, star-shaped crackers, and an array of cheeses.

Island Vibes “As a designer, I have always loved creating tablescapes,” says Small. “It has been a passion of mine since I was a child—Mom and Dad never had a problem asking me to set the table!” For this holiday fête, she wanted to exude an island vibe—“more on the whimsical side,” she says. Rattan tabletop elements (like the Amanda Lindroth pagodas) complement Small’s wicker chairs, while pops of red in the fresh lilies, glassware, and tablecloth combine with green palms and pine in homage to the Christmas holiday. The printed tablecloth is made by a designer Small came across on Instagram. “India is having a moment—in everything from textiles to clothing to napkins,” she says. “I stumbled upon this girl on Instagram last spring and can’t get enough of her prints.” To make the dining space more festive, she hung paper snowflakes and candy apple red satin Chinese lanterns from the ceiling. “I love ceiling decor,” she says. “It’s a nice framing device and a little surprise element that adds a lot.” ❖

hen asked to imagine a symbol that best represents Jupiter, most people envision the iconic lighthouse. Since 1860, it has withstood the test of time as the heart of this idyllic seaside town, a beacon for sailors and anglers traversing the shallow inlet, the backdrop for countless photos, and a favored muse for local artists.
48
And now, the town’s oldest structure presides over its newest development: Charlie & Joe’s at Love Street. The two-acre waterfront restaurant and market complex adjacent to the Pelican Club is set to open to the public in early January, an unveiling nearly 10 years in the making. The project is the brainchild of developer Charles Modica and NFL Hall of Famer Joe Namath, good friends who both have deep ties to Jupiter that go back decades. In 2011, they purchased the land on A1A, directly across the inlet from the lighthouse, and initial planning stages for Charlie & Joe’s at Love Street started to take shape in 2013 when the duo brought in developer Jeffrey Collins from Collins Development Company. Final site plan approval was received in September 2017, and construction began in early 2019. Both Modica and Namath trace their interest in developing the project to their shared love of the area’s history and their desire to build a legacy that everyone can enjoy. “Joe and I are enthralled with this area, and the lighthouse is a part of Jupiter that is self-explanatory,” says Modica, who also owns the Pelican Club. “[The lighthouse] has been there since the Civil War and will be there for a long time to come.”

The $30 million project comprises four eateries, docks, and paved walkways that invite strolling and relaxing by the water and pays homage to the town’s low-key origins as a fishing and boating community. THE GRUB “No matter your age or income, we wanted to create something for everyone,” says Stephen Asprinio, creative visionary behind the project. To that end, dining options at Love Street range from grab-and-go to a rooftop bar with expansive views of the inlet to two very different restaurants with indoor-outdoor dining. The east building is home to Lucky Shuck Oyster Bar & Taphouse (the more casual of the two restaurants) and The Tacklebox (a fish market/takeout spot). At Lucky Shuck, the menu centers on Gulf Coast cuisine, with a raw oyster bar and fresh fish and shellfish, as well as Southern-inspired specialties
such as Cajun-charred skirt steak and crawfish jumbo. In addition to wine and cocktails, Lucky’s puts a heavy focus on craft beer, with nearly 20 brews on draft—including 16 from local breweries and a proprietary blonde ale, Love and Passion, created for Lucky Shuck by Barrel of Monks brewing company. More than 20 other beers are also available in bottles and cans, many from up and down the Southeast. The interiors of all four restaurants were done by Miami-based

Bigtime Design Studios. At Lucky Shuck, the ambience is somewhat suggestive of an early twentieth-century fish factory, with beer kegs suspended in the open loft above the bar. A handpainted mural of an old Barden Boating Center sign (created by Chalk & Brush Design Co. in Miami) acknowledges the history of the site and also complements the casual, open-space decor. lobster and shrimp rolls. Fresh catches are delivered by local anglers straight off the on-site dock. Patrons can enjoy their takeout lunch at one of the outside seating areas or bring their fresh fish purchases home to cook. The adjacent building to the west—which is separated from Lucky Shuck/ The Tacklebox by a heart-shaped outdoor courtyard—is anchored on the ground level by Beacon, a slightly more upscale (though still affordable) restaurant. The menu offers coastal cuisine with Mediterranean flair, including sea scallops, the daily fish catch with choice of sauce, and, for those who crave turf, steaks and prime rib. Everything is made center stage in an open kitchen, surrounded by a three-sided bar that seats 18, allowing patrons to feel part of the food preparation. The crowning glory of the complex, in many ways, is the rooftop bar—Topside at the Beacon. With stunning views of the lighthouse and inlet, Topside is one of the best alfresco spots to hit Jupiter in years. One area of the rooftop is set aside for people to enjoy the waterfront vista and take photos, while seating for 73 and an outdoor bar fills the rest of the space. A casual menu showcases small plates reminiscent of the Basque

region of Spain and meant for sharing, Asprinio says. Guests are also welcome simply to chill with one of the delicious Polynesianinfluenced cocktails or order something from the extensive wine and beer list. A resident DJ adds to the laid-back atmosphere. “The idea is not to be pretentious but to be best in class,” says Asprinio of the overall vibe of Love Street. “We were looking for multi-market appeal. Imagine a high school surfer stopping by The Tacklebox for a po’boy or a poke bowl and sitting outside near the docks, colleagues having a casual business meeting over oysters and a beer at Lucky Shuck, and couples enjoying a datenight dinner at Beacon or meeting friends upstairs at Topside. This is a destination and a place where people can come every day.” Topside opens at 3 p.m. on weekdays and 11:30 a.m. on weekends; Beacon serves dinner nightly from 5 p.m.; Lucky Shuck opens at 11:30 a.m. daily; and The Tacklebox opens at 11 a.m. weekdays/9 a.m. weekends.

THE VIBE Throughout the complex, Jupiter’s past is on display via decor that includes historical photos selected by Namath’s daughter Jessica, as well as the Barden Boating Center mural. One of the new streets fronting the site has also been named Barden Crossing in honor of the former boatyard. Visitors can traverse the walkways between and around the two buildings to the center of the complex, relax or enjoy their Tacklebox takeout on built-in benches surrounding the heart-shaped grass courtyard, and watch commercial fishermen bring in the catch of the day. The heart, of course, is central to the development—both a nod to the heart of Jupiter and the name of the street bordering the complex to the east. “Everyone knows Love Street,” says Mark Lessing, executive vice president of Lessing’s Hospitality Group, which manages the restaurants. “It represents the heart of town but also what this area means to the people who live here, so we wanted to design this place to blend into the local area and still retain its charm.” Appealing to locals has been “the guiding principle” of the development, Lessing says, and that translates into creating value-driven menus that entice a wide range of tastes while Decadent desserts at Beacon include the Chocolate Bombe with chocolate variations, also maintaining the highest level of quality. raspberry, and pistachio crunch. n 1993, when the Ingegnoli family opened their first restaurant in the province of Piemonte, it was a family affair: Chef Francesco was in the kitchen; sister Cristina and mother Claretta (who insisted her name be on the door) patrolled the dining room. One of their regulars, an American real estate developer, convinced the family to come to Florida. After doing some research, they opened in Palm City in 1997. “We loved the area, although it was very quiet 23 years ago,” says Cristina. “Many people here were unfamiliar with genuine Italian food, which was a challenge. Gradually, though, we developed a clientele that had traveled in Italy and appreciated what we were doing.” When you taste the food at Claretta today, it might seem that the Ingegnolis never left their homeland. Chef Francesco specializes in authentic Italian pasta dishes such as spaghetti with fresh spinach, imported speck, cream, and fresh black truffles and homemade ravioli stuffed with butternut squash and served with butter, fresh sage, and a touch of cream. With more than 200 labels and 2,000 bottles, the wine list is a roll call of favorites from Tuscany, Piemonte, Alto Adige, Franciacorta, and Veneto (although one section, grudgingly titled “If You Must,” focuses on selections from California and France). They utilize the Coravin system to offer premium wines by the glass. Above all, Claretta is a family restaurant. Even though their mother passed away in 2018, Cristina and Francesco carry on her legacy. “When you come into the restaurant, it’s a personal experience,” says Cristina. “I take all the orders and make sure our customers try the best dishes for them. Many of them have been coming here for more than 20 years, and some of our employees have been working here almost as long. PUPPY LOVE This year, animal shelters and rescue organizations across the United States took in 1.6 million pets, due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic. Chewy, headquartered in South Florida, kicked off the season of giving with a new Wish List program that connects members of the community to nonprofit animal shelters. Shelters can curate lists of items they need, and animal lovers across Martin County and St. Lucie County can purchase the wish list items. Find out how you can help make a difference at stuartmagazine.com/petlovers.
