Shaken, Not Stirred

The country that created the most sought-after MI6 agent, 007, has fashioned a piece of bespoke furniture worthy of James Bond himself. Fit for the Casino Royale, The Tectonic Bar is the ultimate custom bar. Crafted by renowned British design company Linley, it is built from ebonized walnut and complemented with gold leaf and nickel accents, and can be personalized for one’s specific tap room taste—equipped with a humidor, a refrigerator, an ice dispenser or even a secret compartment.

“If you can imagine it, we can make it,” says Alex Isaac, Linley’s creative director. “We encourage our clients to be inventive when ordering.” The cost depends on customization, but pricing starts at $130,000. There is currently a wait list for the piece, and each one takes roughly 14 weeks to build. “We wanted it to grab people’s attention and be an intriguing object while demonstrating Britishness, innovation and wit,” says Isaac. Plus, it looks like a fine place to shake up a martini. —Rachel Aydt

The Weight of Water Leave it to a group of London-based artists to blow the world’s mind with a work based on rain. The installation Rain Room made its debut in late 2012 at London’s Barbican Museum and crossed the pond last summer, completing a blockbuster run at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. line for as long as 10 hours in heat-wave conditions to get inside. What could be worth the intrepid wait? “A 100-square-meter field of falling water through which it is possible to walk, trusting that a path can be navigated, without being drenched in the process,” according to Random International, the digitally inspired art collective behind the installation. In other words, visitors walk through a storm without getting wet. Founded out of the Royal College of Art in 2005, Random International is a trio of artists—Hannes Koch, Florian Ortkrass and Stuart Wood—who make their home in dear old London town, with a satellite hub in Berlin. There’s nary a soul in South Florida who hasn’t had his or her palate wowed at Casa D’Angelo. The man behind six (and counting!) Italian gems sits down with EP.

Angelo Elia By Mark Spivak

Pristine ingredients, expertly executed. That’s the key to success for Chef Angelo Elia, the man behind Casa D’Angelo. Like a great tenor singing a classic aria in an acoustically perfect hall, Elia plays to packed houses every night. His motto—“It’s all about the ingredients”—has sustained him during a culinary career that spans half a century “My philosophy is simple,” says Elia. “I want to give the guest the best quality products at the best possible price, and I make no compromises. I don’t put anything on the table

And his family certainly knows about food. Growing up in Salerno, the main town near Italy’s Amalfi Coast, Elia’s father was a butcher; his mother had a small trattoria near Naples.

Elia started working in the kitchen as a young boy and dreamed of owning his own restaurant from an early age. At just 14, he came to the United States to work in New York, taking a job first at Siracusa in lower Manhattan, then at La Cisterna on Long Island. In 1987, he made his dream a reality when he opened his first restaurant, Casa D’Angelo, on Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale. the perfect fit

The world’s elite know that when it comes to men’s suits, bespoke is the word. By rachel aydt

The concept of the bespoke suit dates back to the seventeenth century, when men of high social standing would commission a tailor to create custom clothing. The men would shake on it, thus agreeing that the outfit in question had “been spoken for.” A true artisan, the bespoke tailor guides his client through every detail—fabric choice, breast style, lapel size—to customize a suit that could belong to no other. One need only take a brief glance at a bespoke suit to appreciate the intricate craft behind such a perfect fit. The creations of custom tailors on Savile Row have long been considered the height of style for the London man. The Prince of Wales himself relies on luxury shop Anderson & Sheppard for suiting. Here in the States, one of the biggest names in bespoke is Kiton. The Italian clothier with stores in New York, Las Vegas and Miami’s Bal Harbour has become synonymous with class in America. The crème de la crème of the collection is the Kiton K-50. The jewel of bespoke, the K-50 is crafted from the finest fabrics and made by a master tailor in Naples, Italy just for the client, who endures nearly six fittings and may wait months for the final product. The cost: around $50,000. More common in the luxury suit realm is the Kiton made-to-measure option. A less expensive alternative to the bespoke, made-to-measure suits use a pattern—but that pattern is then customized to the man’s body after a series of fittings. The suit is made in the Naples factory by a Neapolitan master tailor, but clients can have fittings done in the Bal Harbour boutique. Made-to-measure Kitons start at $8,500, with a turnaround time of about seven weeks. So if you want your new Kiton in time for polo season, reserve a fitting appointment now. Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance

When: February 14-24 Where: Delray Beach Stadium and Tennis Center Tickets: $25-$250 individual seats; box seats and group discounts available Info: yellowtennisball.com

Heading into its eighth year, the Concours d’Elegance is perhaps the most fun and lavish event in Boca Raton. Held at the Boca Raton Resort & Club to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Broward County, the weekend is filled with exotic, classic automobiles and motorcycles; comic greats like Jay Leno and Bill Cosby; and gourmet cuisine from area restaurants. “We began this event seven years ago for two reasons,” explains event founder and producer Rick Case. “One was to unite car enthusiasts from around the world, and two was to support a much-deserving charity, the Boys and Girls Clubs. In seven short years, we are thriving—and the fastest-growing and most charitable Concours in the world.” Last year alone, the group raised $1 million, a figure made possible by the help of the event’s 200 volunteers. The 2013 Concours honored the fiftieth anniversary of Lamborghini and highlighted Rolls-Royce and Bentley as featured marquees. The thrilling lineup of events included an auction preview, an automobile art show and collector car market seminar, a rousing hangar party at the Boca Raton Airport, a gala dinner and live auction, and entertainment from comedic legend Bob Newhart. And, of course, the main event, the automobile and motorcycle exhibition at the resort’s renovated and expanded show field, dazzled with vintage, antique, classic and exotic vehicles on display.

Delray Beach International Tennis Championships There’s only one tennis tournament in the world to combine an ATP World Tour  event with an ATP Champions Tour event: the Delray  Beach International Tennis Championships. Superstars of all ages compete at the highest level in the game of tennis at the annual 10-day tournament. Now in its sixteenth year in Delray Beach (and broadcast on The Tennis  Channel), the tournament draws more than 50,000 spectators every year at the Delray Beach Stadium and Tennis Center. Over the years, tennis fans have watched pros like John McEnroe (a three-time participant), Ivan Lendl, Michael Chang, Lleyton Hewitt, Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi and Juan  Martin del Potro duke it out in Delray. Last year, Latvian Ernests Gulbis, who played eight matches in nine days, took home the singles trophy—his second in four years. The ITC shocker of the year came when James Blake and Jack Sock, competing in only their  second event together, beat top seeds Max Miryni and Horia Tecau for the doubles win. “ATP events are unique largely due to their location,” says Tournament Director Mark  Baron, who brought the event to Delray Beach after its six-year run in Coral Springs. “We love the

fact that we host this  incredible sporting event in the smallest city on the ATP calendar yet  deliver one of the most powerful presentations of the game.” There’s more to the event than tennis. Last year, VIPs kicked off the festivities with a Las Vegas–themed party where sponsors and guests mingled with players while partaking in casino games and gourmet cuisine. Many more lunches, dinner parties and sponsor events took place over the 10-day tournament, adding another layer of excitement, with partial proceeds going to more than 30 local charities and organizations. Horses and philanthropy are an intrinsic part of the lifestyle in Windsor, a 416-acre luxurious residential community sited on a barrier island in Vero Beach. So to host a charity blue-chip polo match in Vero Beach was an obvious mission for the Honorary Hilary Weston, former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. In 2012, Weston created the Windsor Charity Polo Cup, a biennial event that would not only raise money but also attract families, friends and some of the world’s top polo players. Windsor would host a day of polo matches, an elegant fieldside Champagne luncheon and tailgating parties. At the first Windsor Charity Polo Cup in 2012, spectators watched TV personality/polo player and Vero Beach resident

Naples Winter Wine Festival Oenophiles from all over the world come to Naples for three days of tasting, dining and entertainment. One of the world’s largest global wine events, the Naples Winter Wine Festival (NWWF) is put on by the Naples Children & Education Foundation. Since its inception in 2001, the foundation has raised $110 million to improve the lives of underprivileged children in Collier County. America’s most successful charity wine auction for eight consecutive years, last year’s NWWF was themed “When Stars Align” to symbolize that children are today’s rising stars. The festival began with Meet the Kids Day, where attendees had the opportunity to lunch with the many children who have benefited from the festival over the years. Later that day, guests sampled dozens of fine pairings—the world’s top chefs prepared elegant meals while renowned vintners provided fine wine. The most sought-after event happened the next day, as hundreds of guests gathered for the annual Culinary Showcase and Auction. On the Grand Lawn of the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort,

surprise that Fort Lauderdale  hosts the world’s largest in-water boat show, attracting an audience of hundreds of thousands of marine enthusiasts every fall. In 2013, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show celebrated its fifty-fourth year with jaw-dropping exhibits ranging from yacht builders and designers to exotic cars and brokerage yachts. The boats were displayed in six locations—connected by both land and water transportation—totaling more than three million square feet of  exhibit space. The hottest attraction of the event: SeaFair, a 228-foot custom yacht with a restaurant and bar, various VIP lounges and displays of fine art and jewelry. Docked at the Bahia Mar Fort Lauderdale Beach Hotel and Marina, the SeaFair provided guests with a beautiful club-like ambiance in which to relax, chat or conduct business. Another highlight last year was the Sailfish Pavilion at the Greater Fort  Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center location, with indoor and outdoor displays like the Miss

Other popular exhibits included the personal submarine, a flying car  and the exotic auto display.  “We are committed to enhancing the show experience each year with new attractions,” says Dane Graziano, senior vice president and COO of Show Management, the company that manages and produces the event for the Marine Industries Association of South Florida. Sport Leisure

The Game of Kings Florida’s legendary horse country sets the scene for world-class polo. There’s just something about the elegance and thrill of watching a team of four powerful polo ponies and their riders gallop across perfectly manicured fields to a hard-earned win. Florida has been home to the world’s oldest team sport since the 1920s, when the Phipps brothers opened the Gulf Stream Polo Club in Palm Beach in 1927. It started with a few weekend matches played on two fields along the Intracoastal Waterway—later, the club was moved to Lake Worth and renamed Gulfstream Polo Club. Boca Raton’s Palm City Polo Club (formerly the Royal Palm Polo Club) soon followed. And in 2004, Wellington’s International Polo Club (IPC) secured South Florida’s position as one of the most renowned championship polo hubs in the world. Every season, IPC hosts major events like the Piaget USPA Gold Cup and the coveted U.S. Open Polo Championship, drawing the most elite polo players in the world and bringing great excitement to Floridians who follow the circuit. Here’s to a game that has survived the rise and fall of civilizations and flourishes in South Florida today.

Aeroboat There are superyachts and then there are super yachts. The breathtaking Aeroboat, from the drawing board of Britain’s Claydon Reeves, is going to cause jaws to drop and craniums to rotate from Palm Beach to St. Tropez’s Nikki Beach when it eventually hits the water. Powering this 48-foot, carbon fiber-hulled projectile is, wait for it, a 2,100-hp Rolls-Royce Merlin V12. Yes, the one that powered the famous Spitfire World War II fighter plane. If you’ve ever heard the distant, full-throated roar of a Spitfire on flyby, you probably still have ringing in your ears. Now imagine the sound as the Aeroboat thunders past the jetty at speeds of up to 50 knots. Thankfully, this rocket-boat is equipped with a two-stage exhaust that provides a fully hushed system, providing calm and quiet docking. Design-wise, the long bow of the Aeroboat hints at those epic PT-109 motor torpedo boats that JFK crewed on back in World War II, while the stern has the flavor of a high-speed vintage hydroplane. Legendary British boat builder Green Marine has the contract to build the boat. However, because Merlin engines are so rare, just 10 of these extraordinary high-speed day boats will be built, each with a $3 to $4 million price tag. claydonreeves.com

Only Now The winner of Boat International magazines’s coveted World Superyacht 2013 award, the gorgeous Only Now may be the perfect-sized luxury yacht. At 111 feet bow to stern, 24 feet wide and just 5.6 feet deep, it’s spacious enough to comfortably accommodate friends and family, yet not so big that you can’t slip into a sheltered anchorage. And with twin 1,700-horsepower Caterpillar C32s pushing her to an easy 22 knots, the Only Now from Istanbul-based Tansu Yachts has the pace to match her grace. Turkish yards have long been masters at working with wood, and Only Now takes the technique to the next level with its light yet super-strong wooden and epoxy hull and superstructure. Tansu Yachts worked with the naval architects and engineers at Diana Yacht Design to shape Only Now’s head-turning lines featuring that distinctive, wave-cleaving axe bow and square-edged, slightly militaristic top. There’s accommodation for up to six guests divided into three spacious cabins. The centrally located master features a walk-in wardrobe, his and hers en-suite bathrooms and an office. And the ship’s gym is just a short jog away. rizatansu.com

Jazz From the creative mind of renowned architect Zaha Hadid comes a line of superyachts that look more like spaceships than boats. Pritzer Prize–winning Hadid has partnered with Hamburg-based Blohm + Voss to design a family of five 295-foot Unique Circle Yachts, all based on a 420-foot master prototype. The first, Jazz, has already been commissioned and is being specified and detailed by naval experts Blohm + Voss. The yachts look much like Hadid’s ethereal architecture—all glacier

white with fluid dynamics—and mimic her architecture in structure as well, with an exoskeleton that connects the various levels and decks of the ship with expressive diagonals. The design evokes the organic structural systems found in natural marine formations. Inside, stark pod-like furniture (similar to that found in the Hadiddesigned Roca London Gallery showroom) fills the captain’s deck. The five Unique Circle Yachts will be designed to owner preferences. zaha-hadid.com

Ghost Dutch master yacht-builder Feadship and De Voogt Naval Architects created the edgy, radical lines of this 180-foot, all-aluminum rocketship for Holland’s Ghost Yachts. From her knife-like bow to her creased stern and folded-paper style superstructure, Ghost is stark, clean-lined beauty. Coupling lightweight alloy construction with an advanced hull design featuring a mix of hard chines and round bilge sections, Ghost can slice through the water like a knife through butter. And with her meager 7-foot, 4-inch draft, she’ll go into anchorages few other megayachts can reach. While her twin V-12 MTU diesels deliver a combined 6,920 horsepower, these powerplants are smaller than a yacht of this size might normally use. Yet pedal-to-the-metal, she’ll hit an impressive 29 knots, while 11 knots will give Ghost a transatlantic range of more than 4,000 nautical miles. Alberto Vismara of the Undicimetriquadri interior design group crafted accommodations for eight in four spacious cabins together with a sprawling master. The decor is said to be on the minimalistic side with lots of brushed aluminum and light veneers. Right now, Ghost’s design is just that—a design. But with every detail now complete, Ghost Yacht founder Bjorn Moonen hopes to have the ship in build in the very near future. ghost-yachts.com EP

Lunar By definition, motor sailers tend to offer the worst of all worlds: They motor like a Hummer on two cylinders and sail even worse. The new Polish-built Conrad 115 motor sailer Lunar may just break that mold. But first, the Conrad’s looks. Designers Newcruise of Hamburg, Germany have given this all-aluminum, 115-foot, ketch superyacht styling at its finest. That wavelike sheerline, the straight-up bow, the rolling edges to the superstructure, the silver-painted hull … It’s all absolutely gorgeous. She’s a ketch with twin carbon masts and cutter rig. And there are no grinding winches here; everything is hydraulic. As for the “motor” part of the motor sailer, she’s powered by a couple of Cat C18Ds, each good for 725 horses. That’s enough to shove her along at 14 knots. And with her 1,340-gallon tanks brimmed, Lunar should be good for Palm Beach to St. Barths without topping up. Not that you’d need to with all those sails. Below decks, there’s a choice of four spacious en-suite cabins, while on deck there’s a mini pool to cool off in, plus a hydraulic bathing platform for those back dives with a half-twist. Lunar was commissioned for a Baltic billionaire who intends to sail her to the far corners of the earth, though the folks at Conrad will be happy to replicate her. conradshipyard.com

M There seems to be an economy of lettering in modern-day yachtnaming. After Russian oligarch Andrey Melnichenko’s A and the Perini Navi Group superyacht P2, now comes M, a bold new composite-hulled 132-footer from the family-owned Istanbul yard Bilgin Yachts. Reverse bow styling is nothing new. It goes back to pre-World War II warships, though Melnichenko’s submarine-like A arguably brought it back into fashion. Bilgin’s M is the latest superyacht to incorporate this head-turning nautical design cue, which is reckoned to pierce through the waves more smoothly than a conventional bow. H2 Yacht Design penned the exterior and interior of this $15 million silver bullet. Powered by twin V-16 MTU oil-burners each cranking out a healthy 2,400 horsepower, the 195-ton M will scythe through those waves at 23 knots max and cruise leisurely at 18. Inside, she’s very much on the SoHo loft-style side, with lots of sleek and sexy Macassar ebony and zebrano timber, plus lashings of leather and designer fabrics. Eight guests can relax here very comfortably in a quartet of cabins, with zero-speed stabilizers there to calm those Mediterranean swells. While M was built only last year, she has already hit the used boat market. Last time we looked, the sticker on the windshield read $12.6 million. bilginyacht.com 24

Prima Like Toyota’s hybrid, this new 131-foot Columbus Prima has two giant electric motors that allow it to cruise silently and with zero emissions. But if anyone makes a Prius analogy, just whip out the RINA Green Star Plus Award given to Naples, Italy–based yacht builder Palumbo Shipyards by His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco. The secret of the Columbus Sport 130 Hybrid’s environmental friendliness is its hybrid system of fuel-sipping generators charging up batteries that provide juice to those twin electric motors. As long as you’re content to amble along at 7.5 knots, it’ll likely cruise for eternity—or at least 5,000 nautical miles. Want to go faster? That’s when the big muscle diesels kick in and the knots rise to an impressive 25. Helping save on diesel is the lightweight aluminum used for Prima’s semi-displacement hull and swoopy superstructure. She may not be the prettiest yacht in the harbor—the towering sides, bulbous bow and steely-bronze paint created by Hydro Tec Naval Architecture make her look a little industrial. But there’s no doubt her new Russian owner is ecstatic. Below decks, there’s a quartet of beautifully finished cabins featuring a mix of light fabrics and dark marble. One of the exterior highlights is its massive rear deck that the designers call “The Beach Club.” Prima’s rumored cost is in the region of $30 million. columbusyachts.it

At the highest levels, collecting blue-chip wine is the ultimate winning proposition. If you regard wine as an investment, take comfort in the fact that First Growth Bordeaux has outperformed just about every stock index on the planet over the past few decades. Even more comforting is that it will likely improve as it ages—and you can always drink it. The possible catch is that large amounts of patience are required. If you buy Bordeaux futures, you’ll wait two or three years to take possession of your wine and another 10 or 15 before you can start opening bottles. Many of the top California Cabernets are sold first to customers on the winery mailing lists, and prices escalate sharply when purchased on the after-market. (Contact wineries for information about joining their mailing lists, and again be prepared to wait.) Not sure what you’re looking for this season? Check out some of the top collectibles on the market today.

Bordeaux Best recent vintages: 1982, 1989, 1990, 1998 (Pomerol and St.-Émilion only), 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010 Château Petrus, Pomerol: This voluptuous Merlot is one of the ultimate collectibles—stunningly rich, with mind-blowing levels of delicacy and finesse. Production is low (fewer than 5,000 cases in a good year), and prices are correspondingly high—anywhere from $4,000–$6,000 per bottle in a great vintage. The First Growths: In the red wine classification of 1855, four estates were ranked at the top: Lafite-Rothschild, Latour, Margaux and Haut-Brion. A fifth, Mouton Rothschild, was elevated in 1973. First Growths are the bedrock of the auction world, a form of liquid gold against which all other wines are measured. First among equals is Lafite, which in recent years has become the most popular luxury wine brand in Asia. Expect to pay around $1,600 per bottle for the infant 2009, while the 2000 vintage averages closer to $2,300. Château d’Yquem, Sauternes: The most famous sweet wine of all, d’Yquem topped the 1855 classification of Sauternes and Barsac and has had a legendary reputation for more than two centuries. It is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon picked literally one grape at a time and can only be made in years when the climatic conditions are right. Best recent vintages include 2001, 2003, 2007 and 2009; prices per bottle range from $500–$1,000. EP

Speed Demons Today’s highest-performance sports cars are more than supercars. Lean, mean, super machines, these supreme vehicles embody the essence of power and speed. Have a need for speed? Take a visual spin in 10 of the fastest supercars available today. By HOWARD WALKER

McLaren 12C Spider Has it really been four years since McLaren pulled the wraps off its coupe-bodied MP4 12C? It’s finally time for the Brit supercar maker to deliver what its buyers really want: a drop-top convertible version.

And what an engine. For 2013, it received a welcome power hike, conjuring up an extra 24 horsepower to bring the tally up to 616

hearing the car’s screaming 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8.

But where the McLaren sets itself apart from the competition is in the truly phenomenal way it handles itself at the limit. It may not look as pretty or feel as special as a Ferrari 458 Italia, but as a driver’s car, it’s second to none.

Porsche 918 Spyder Contemplate this for a second: The two auxiliary electric motors used in Porsche’s mind-blowing 918 Spyder hybrid supercar, when combined, offer more power than the 3-liter engine used in Porsche’s first generation 911 Turbo. And we thought that was potent. But with the 918, you then need to add in the 608 horsepower on tap from its mid-mounted 4.6-liter 32-valve V-8. It amounts to no less than 887

seconds and a foot-to-the-floor top speed of 211 mph. Did we mention the big V-8 can rev to 9,150 mind-blowing rpm? Or that it can run on electric-only power for up to 18 miles at 93 mph? Here is arguably the most technically advanced, eco-friendly supercar ever to burn rubber—not that it will, because while the V-8 drives the rear wheels, there’s an electric motor driving the front ones, essentially making the 918 all-wheel drive. The first 918 Spyders will start landing in the United States this spring with production limited to 918 cars, each carrying a price tag of $846,000— which is the equivalent of 349 Toyota Prius hybrids.

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse What you have here is quite simply the world’s fastest, most powerful production convertible money can buy. With an insane 1,200 horsepower delivered by Bugatti’s 8-liter, 16-cylinder, quad-turbo nuclear reactor, this latest Veyron can warp from standstill to 60 mph in an incomprehensible 2.5 seconds. While this same engine punched a Veyron Super Sport coupe to a record top speed of 267.81 mph, in the interest of follicle protection, Bugatti rightly tames the Vitesse’s top speed to a Hair Club For Men–

manual 0-60: 2.7 seconds Price: $1.1 million

In 2012, Tyler drove off into the Malibu sunset in the very first Hennessey Venom GT Spyder, a new targa-topped version of Texas-based Hennessey Performance Engineering’s insanely fast, obscenely powerful 1,244-horsepower Venom GT supercar. While the Venom is loosely based on the tiny-tot Lotus Elise, the two are as different as night and day. The Venom is nearly three feet longer and almost six inches wider, and its wheelbase stretches nearly 20 inches to accommodate Hennessey’s manic twin-turbo 7-liter Corvettebased V8.

EP

And this carbon-bodied Venom GT Spyder defines “manic.” Tipping the scales at just 1,244 kilos—that’s 2,743 pounds—and with John Hennessey’s mantra of “one horsepower for every kilo of weight,” the car’s performance is mind-blowing.

mph

Off the line, 60 mph comes up in just 2.7 seconds, while top speed tested at 265 mph. We have two words of advice for Mr. Tyler: heart medication.

Koenigsegg Agera R Count from one to two. Now imagine searing from zero to 186 mph, standing on the brakes and slamming back to zero in 2.9 seconds, to be precise. Now, that’s supercar performance. This $2.5 million, 1,140-horsepower, carbon-fiber projectile is the creation of Christian von Koenigsegg. Since the early 2000s, he’s been cranking out amazing speed machines considered by supercar aficionados as some of the most sophisticated and technically advanced in the business. The Agera R is a true performance blunt instrument. It gets its

730-horsepower V12 engine is handmade especially for the car by Mercedes’ AMG division. It has eight exhaust tailpipes. Oh, and it’s built by a company you’ve probably never heard of. This is the Pagani Huayra, pronounced “why-ra” and loosely meaning “God of the winds” in Quechua. An Argentine businessman-cum-car designer named Horacio Pagani lovingly bolts it together in Modena, Italy. Pagani has been building mid-engined, scissor-doored supercars since the late ’90s. His first was the wild-child Zonda, of which more than 200 were built. The Huayra takes the Zonda to the next level of driving thrills, using active aerodynamics—little flaps at each corner that, much like a F-16 fighter jet, move independently and alter the down force. Important stuff when you’re blasting into a sweeping right-hander at the Nurburgring at 175 mph. And the Huayra does blast. With its mid-mounted 6-liter AMG twinturbo V12 with a full head of steam, it’ll reportedly streak from standstill

Ferrari F12 Berlinetta This beast is a beauty. While supercars can so often look like the manic creation of a 5-year-old with an Etch A Sketch, here is absolute automotive perfection in the jaw-dropping shape of the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. Every curve, every crease, every brushstroke is a joy to behold. And then, when you’re about to get all poetic about its style, you twist the key and fire it up. Nestled beneath that sculpted hood is a new 6.3-liter, naturally aspirated V12 that conjures up an almighty 730 horsepower and 509 pound-feet of tire-frying torque. Here is quite simply the most powerful, naturally aspirated series-production car in the world, the most potent Ferrari road car ever built (if you don’t count the newer $1.3 million LaFerrari, a hybrid that boasts 963 horsepower and a top speed upwards of 217 mph but sold out its 499-unit limited run before it even debuted last March). Automotive nirvana is this mega-motor hitting its 8,700 rpm redline.

road-going attack fighter. You even start it by flipping up a red plastic flap with your thumb and pressing the start button, just as if you were strafing the enemy. This replacement for the brutal Murciélago delivers even greater levels of performance and handling. Pedal to the metal and with all-wheel drive delivering power to the blacktop, the Aventador will explode off the line to 60 mph in a mere 2.8 seconds, cover the quarter-mile in 10.6 and not quit until it’s low-level flying at 217 mph. Motivation comes from an all-new, super-lightweight 6.5-liter V12 that is

›› Top Speed: 217 mph Engine: 6.5-liter V12 Power: 700 horsepower at 8,250 rpm Torque: 507 pound-feet at 5,500 rpm Transmission: 7-speed automated manual 0-60: 2.8 seconds Price: $387,000.

deliriously happy to scream all the way to its 8,250 rpm redline. It’s coupled to a seven-speed automated manual that can shift gears in 50 milliseconds. But it’s the way the Aventador handles itself at the limit that really sets it apart from its predecessor. Compared to the Murciélago, the carbon fiber chassis is some 150 percent stiffer, its suspension design and traction control systems much more sophisticated. If you can’t quite stretch to a Bugatti Veyron, the Aventador runs a close second. 38

Aston Martin One-77 Before you ask: No, you can’t buy one. Well, at least not from the

factory. But when everything these days has a price, if you make the right call to the right man and with the right wire transfer, you might just acquire one of the 77 Aston Martin One-77 supercars. (If that fails, try eBay.) What $1.8 million would buy you is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful cars ever created. Think of an original Aston Vanquish on steroids, from its air-gulping grille to its vast blistered wheel arches to the gorgeous sweep of its roofline. And this is all about old-school, low-tech brute force. Under the hood is a massive, naturally aspirated 7.3-liter V12 cranking out a staggering 750 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. Delivering all this grunt to the rear wheels—no fancy all-wheel drive here—is a positively retro sixspeed, single-clutch automated manual. Dial up 4,000 rpm on the tach, foot off the brake and the One-77 will lunge to 60 in 3.5 seconds and continue delivering its tsunami of torque

all the way past 200 mph. That’s probably the speed at which the One-77's price will soar over the next decade. Talk about a terrific investment.

SSC Tuatara In 2007, a little company from West Richland, Washington called Shelby SuperCars set a Guinness World Records production car speed

276

record of 256.18 mph with its 1,183 horsepower Ultimate Aero, unseating the benchmark Bugatti Veyron. While Bugatti eventually grabbed back the record with its Veyron Super Sport recording 258 mph, Shelby’s credentials as a bonafide supercar manufacturer were established.

›› Top speed: 276 mph (estimated) Engine: 7-liter twin turbo V8 Power: 1,350 horsepower at 9,200 rpm Torque: 1,042 poundfeet at 6,800 rpm Transmission: 7-speed manual 0-60: 2.5 seconds Price: $1.3 million

Now Shelby SuperCars—renamed SSC and no relation to Carroll Shelby—has introduced a car that has recaptured the top-speed crown (for now). The SSC Tuatara packs a staggering 1,350 horsepower and has an estimated top speed of 276 mph. It’s powered by an SSC-designed and built 7-liter twin-turbo V8 that revs to an insane 9,200 rpm, blast from standstill to 60 mph in an unthinkable 2.5 seconds and run the quarter-mile in 9.75 seconds. While the Ultimate Aero always looked a little “kit car-ish,” the Tuatara has been shaped by talented designer Jason Castriota, who has done terrific work at Pininfarina and Bertone. Although the SC Tuatara holds the title of fastest supercar right now, Bugatti just might reclaim that title very soon. Rumor has it the French automaker has plans to release a “Super Veyron” later this year that will pack 1,500 under the bonnet and reach a top speed of 288 mph. The price tag? An estimated $7.5 million. EP

oca Raton has been the epitome of exquisite European taste since the 1920s when Palm Beach architect Addison Mizner purchased thou-

sands of acres of land in the area, hoping to turn it into a coastal resort city. Mizner’s legacy can be seen in the city’s famed pink-tower Cloister Inn, known today as the Boca Raton Resort & Club. Sited between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, the Boca Raton Resort & Club (a Waldorf Astoria Resort) offers spectacular water views from just about anywhere on the property. From the worldclass golf course, private tennis center and award-winning spa to the beautiful boutiques, 32-slip marina and Ocean Beach Club, the resort offers guests nothing but elegance and style. One of the most striking aspects of this part of South Florida is the stretch of heavenly beachfront. Clear waters and warm sand turn backyards into paradise. East of I-95, downtown Boca Raton is a private world of extravagant waterfront estates. Inside enclaves of gated communities are homes designed in a variety of styles—Mediterranean, West Indies, French Provincial, tropical Georgian, classic traditional—with views of the Intracoastal, deep water canals and the Atlantic Ocean. West of I-95, suburban Boca Raton and Delray Beach feature sprawling estates sited in magnificent private country clubs, gated tennis enclaves and tranquil equestrian communities. The many gated country clubs and private enclaves provide extraordinary amenities such as tropically landscaped grounds, meandering lakes, professionally designed golf courses, breathtaking country clubs, resort-style aquatic centers, private tennis courts, day spa facilities and renowned restaurants. In the equestrian enclaves—multi-acre estates with private barns and stables—horses greet their owners on their front lawns. To the north and south of eastern Boca Raton are two barrier islands, Highland Beach and Hillsboro Beach, both popular with residents looking for a taste of island life. Home to fewer than 5,000 year-round residents, these islands offer palatial luxury condos, townhomes and huge beachfront estates expanding from the Atlantic to the Intracoastal. Just south of eastern Boca Raton is Hillsboro Mile, where residents boat over to the Hillsboro Inlet to visit the Hillsboro Club, a private historical beach club on its own peninsula and home to the Hillsboro lighthouse. The cultural center of Boca Raton is Mizner Park. Designed as a Mediterranean revival lifestyle center, Mizner Park is the place for shopping, dining and culture—home to the Count de Hoernle Amphitheater, the Boca Raton Museum of Art and the Black Box Theater. Within walking distance to Mizner Park, Royal Palm Place is a hot spot for art—galleries, antiques, boutiques and a weekly farmer’s market. In the heart of Boca Raton is Town Center, which hosts luxury labels and department stores such as Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Tiffany & Co., Burberry, Ralph Lauren, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, Brooks Brothers and Lilly Pulitzer. Nightlife centers around the Boca Center and its many restaurants and boutiques. Nearby, in suburban Delray Beach, The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens has been a hub for Japanese arts and culture in South Florida since 1977. Museum visitors discover South Florida’s heritage and connection with Japan and explore a series of six diverse gardens, each inspired by a different historical period and style of Japanese gardening.

B

eaming with historic charm and shell-speckled beaches, Delray Beach is one of the most sought-

after destinations in South Florida. Recently voted the “Most Fun Small Town in America” by Rand McNally & USA Today, Delray Beach does not disappoint its visitors. A beautiful Atlantic coastline envelops the quaint seaside village—brick-paved sidewalks are lined by live oaks, palm trees and street lamps. Residents here appreciate the area’s eclectic style: The homes range from historic Spanish stucco to British West Indies, Key West–style beach cottages and modern Mediterranean—all blending beautifully on the coast. The downtown area is bustling with shops, galleries, cafes, lush parks, historic museums, theaters, miniature golf, yacht cruises, bike rentals and exquisite fine dining. The hub of it all is Atlantic Avenue, where vibrant nightlife abounds, as well as the Old School Square Cultural Arts Center, where multiple festivals and events are held. Just off Atlantic Avenue is the Pineapple Grove Arts District. This chic and eclectic area is a mix of restaurants, cafes, boutiques, galleries, entertainment venues, spas and the new Hyatt Place Hotel. The Delray Beach Stadium and Tennis Center is a world-class tennis center that offers public courts and hosts championship tournaments including the Fed Cup, the Davis Cup, the Chris Evert Tennis Classic and the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships. Those looking for a more private ambiance flock to the barrier island. Gulf Stream, an exclusive beach community, is home to fewer than 1,000 residents. Also on the island, due north of Gulf Stream, Ocean Ridge offers oceanfront and Intracoastal homes, ocean-view condominiums and seaside townhomes. Manalapan, a magnificent island north of Ocean Ridge incorporated in 1931 by Harold Stirling Vanderbilt, is a quiet town with unparalleled beauty. With just 350 residents, this is a tight-knit community where residents

jorge mÁrquez

share a luxurious lifestyle with their close neighbors on the island of Palm Beach. Most Manalapan estates are generously sited from the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean, boasting magnificent water views from every room. EP

O

ld Fort Lauderdale—the coastal district of the city that includes areas such as Las Olas Isles,

Rio Vista Isles and Harbor Beach—is a charming area surrounded by water and deep-rooted in history. Estab-

h

lished in 1838 as the home to a Second Seminole War fortification, the city of Fort Lauderdale boasts two of the oldest houses in Florida: Bonnet and Stranahan. These historical buildings portray the ageless beauty of architecture that Fort Lauderdale was built around. An abundance of clear blue waters and inland waterways has earned this South Florida city the nickname “The Venice of America.” The city also has the distinction of being the yachting capital of the world, hosting the annual International Boat Show every fall. Yacht owners are drawn to this boating mecca for its deep waterways and easy access to the Bahamas, the Florida Keys and other island destinations. Adding to the charm of this city, water taxis transport residents of the isles and keys to and from the mainland. The peace and tranquility in the north end of Fort Lauderdale Beach offers just 49 single-family residences directly on the sand. These oceanfront homes form part of a delightful enclave of private residences with beach access, ranging from single-story beach houses to Mediterranean and contemporary-style, newer constructions. Closer to the bustle, Fort Lauderdale Beach Extension and Las Olas by the Sea offer residences across the street from the sand, facing out to A1A. A delightful oceanside community along these side streets offers easy access to the beach, Las Olas and downtown Fort Lauderdale. With yachting, fine dining, arts and entertainment and gorgeous beaches, this tropical metropolis offers endless possibilities. Shopping and a vibrant nightlife make Las Olas Boulevard a prime destination for residents and visitors alike. Countless hours can be spent here enjoying a leisurely brunch at a sidewalk cafe, browsing at the fabulous boutiques and specialty stores and stepping out for a night of entertainment. Fort Lauderdale offers much in the way of culture, including the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, museums, malls, The International Swimming Hall of Fame, The IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum, an IMAX theater and more. The bustling Riverwalk, filled with dynamic arts and entertainment venues, is being expanded on every year. EP

orth of Palm Beach on the Treasure Coast is the island of Vero Beach, a treasure trove of

abundant natural beauty, great weather and expansive water views that attracts visitors and residents from around the world. The island of Vero Beach (zip code 32963) has been designated by the Wall Street Journal as having the second-highest concentration of wealth and highereducation degrees in the United States. Vero Beach was also rated the “Best Small Town in Florida & 12th in the Nation” and one of the “100 Best Art Towns in America” by The Rating Guide to Life in America’s Small Cities. The estates here are as unique as they are exquisite, featuring a range of architectural styles including British West Indies, Bermuda, Georgian-inspired and Mediterranean. There is plenty of cultural wealth, as well as upscale amenities to match: luxury shopping at fine boutiques and galleries, gourmet dining and high-end resorts and spas including the famed Vero Beach Hotel & Spa and Coste d’Este. For sea lovers, there is no better place than Vero Beach. The area is home to some of the most amazing places to explore the magnificent surrounding seas. An endless supply of Intracoastal and deep waterways allows for unlimited boating, fishing, surfing and diving with one of the highest concentrations of manatees, sea turtles and dolphins in the state. Encompassed within Vero Beach is the exclusive town of Indian River Shores, a seven-mile-long community between the Atlantic Ocean and Indian River Lagoon. Residents here enjoy pristine beaches, controlled growth and private residential communities. Also within Vero Beach is the Town of Orchid. With a population of fewer than 300 residents, the 18-squaremile area is mostly untouched and enjoys an abundance of wildlife and natural beaches. Other Vero Beach enclaves include John’s Island, Windsor, Old Riomar, the Moorings and the renowned Estate Section. Known as the “Gateway to the Tropics,” Vero Beach is located in a climatic transition zone that offers an unusual mix of landscape—ancient oak trees and pine forests found in the coastal Carolinas blend with swaying palms and colorful blooms typical of the tropics. The area is also recognized as the “Citrus Capital of the World,” producing the finest Indian River citrus for the domestic market and worldwide export. EP
