FOUR SEASONS PRIVATE RESIDENCES ORLANDO
Mary Thurman Yuhas or a fortunate few, the happiest place on earth can also be home. Located in Golden Oak, an exclusive and secluded community at Walt Disney World Resort, are the Four Seasons Private Residences, a semitropical new community of unique luxury homes infused with all of the expected amenities and the unexpected coalesced with the magic of Disney. Safely ensconced in a continuously guard-gated neighborhood, glimpses of the traditionally styled and often multigenerational residences-- ranging from 5,000 to 18,000-square-feet--can be seen rising above the ubiquitous leafy hedge rows that line the palm-laden streets. Adding to the ambience of this fun and sun-kissed lifestyle are the old fashioned streetlights that at night cast a warm glow over the pleasant, family-friendly locale. Only the sounds of children’s laughter and tropical birds living in the surrounding wetlands and preserves interrupt the tranquil environment. Yet Magic Kingdom Park is just a few miles away.
A few of the many exceptional services offered to residents via an annual fee are: à la carte services from the adjacent 5-star Four Seasons Resort (every home has a butler pantry with a private access door, an oven warming drawer and refrigerator which allows hotel staff to drop off food and/or laundry day or night without disturbing the family. A locked door inside the home limits access), use of the resort’s kid and teen-friendly swimming pool and lazy river accessed by residents through a nearby private gate, a dedicated Director of Residences for Four Seasons homeowners and membership in the Golden Oak Club, a private social and recreational club including transportation to the theme parks and planned activities limited to Club members. The Orlando area is served by the Orlando International Airport, Kissimmee Gateway Airport and Orlando Executive Airport for those electing to fly private. DANIELA FEDERICA, COURTESY OF BLUE ILLUSION
I must confess: December is my favorite month. I love the spirit of warmth, generosity, and merriment that permeates this time of year, and I’d venture to say it’s more palpable in Palm Beach than anywhere else. The people of our community genuinely stand together in sharing their good fortune to ensure everyone has a memorable holiday, especially children with limited opportunities. One of the best gifts a child can receive is a proper education and a foundation in good citizenship. Thanks to David and Jill Gilmour and other generous Palm Beachers, that will soon be a reality for a few hundred local youngsters who might otherwise fall prey to negative influences. With the opening of the Erin H. Gilmour Early Learning Center, named for David’s late daughter, the Opportunity Early Childhood Education & Family Center will expand to three times its capacity and add programming that until now had been a dream. The official opening is next month, but the Gilmours are already plotting the expansion of this concept to other communities that desperately need it. Read about this game-changing act of altruism in “A Legacy of Love,” on page 82. If that’s not enough to give you the holiday feels, turn to page 94 and enjoy an “Island Holiday” with Kay Iselin Gilman. Kay, a powerhouse businesswoman and author who now enjoys a more relaxed pace in Palm Beach, drew inspiration from family Christmases past to host a soiree that is equal parts tradition and fun. True to her perfectionist nature, everything was beautifully coordinated in sorbet colors, down to the parting gift of Sugarfinas. One of the cherished traditions I enjoy with my children is seeing The Nutcracker on stage. This year, we saw it on the big screen as well, at least a twisted version of it. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, the fantasy film based on the ballet, prompted the pictorial beginning on page 100. We asked four talented pastry chefs to each take one realm—Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers, Land of Sweets, and the mystical Fourth Realm—and recreate it in sugar. I, for one, was blown away by their artistry. See for yourself in “Magical Journey.” Regardless of how you celebrate, I hope you will be inspired by our pages and the spirit behind them. Wishing you an ever-sparkling season and new year!
If you haven’t been to Swank Specialty Produce for a master-chef dinner under the pole barn, you’re missing an extraordinary evening of food, fun, and friendship. Page 117. SO MUCH HAPPENING THIS MONTH! I’M ESPECIALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO ANN NORTON SCULPTURE GARDENS’ “AN EVENING WITH IRIS APFEL,” THAT INDEFATIGABLE GERIATRIC STARLET, AT CAFÉ L’EUROPE. PAGE 176.

If you need some alone time, fret not: Art Basel also offers a free kindergarten and playroom program for children ages 4 to 12. A team from the Miami Children’s Museum will watch over your young one and help him or her make arts and crafts while you tour the convention center. For Palm Beachers: The Society of the Four Arts (fourarts.org) hosts an annual field trip to Art Basel, taking place this year on December 7. Participants will depart the Four Arts, tour the festival with art expert Sofia Vollmer Maduro, and return to Palm Beach the same day. The Armory Art Center (armoryart.org) will also mount a field trip south on the same day.

When: Public days December 6-9 Where: Miami Beach Convention Center Who: More than 200 galleries from North and Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Africa, displaying top works by modern, contemporary, and up-and-coming artists. Highlights: In addition to its main exhibition area, Art Basel also houses special sectors that cater to different concepts within contemporary art dialogues. Nova, for instance, invites galleries to display works created within the last three years, allowing for a sense of immediacy and excitement. Positions, on the other hand, are spaces devoted to one new talent presenting one major project. In contrast to both Nova and Positions, Survey looks to the past with pieces made before the year 2000. Getting there: With the launch of Brightline services to Miami earlier this year, art lovers can now arrive at Art Basel without languishing in I-95 traffic. It takes one hour to travel from West Palm Beach to the Brightline MiamiCentral Station. From there, order up a Lyft (Brightline’s official rideshare partner) for the short drive to the convention center.

The collection premiered along with the fashion house’s Cruise 2019 presentation and features clothing, purses, leather accessories, and shoes (available in select stores and online at louisvuitton. com) playfully stamped with Coddington’s Persian cats, Pumpkin and Blanket, as well as LV creative director Nicolas Ghesquière’s dog, Leon.
