From the Publisher

Fall in Florida is different than anywhere else. When growing up in the Northeast, I always associated the season with new, warmer clothes and a defined chill in the air. Here, it means the kids go back to school and summer vacations come to an end. Retailers that temporarily closed for the past couple of months are back in full swing. Because September is Restaurant Month, it’s the perfect reason to talk about local restaurants, particularly those garnering much fanfare for representing two of my favorite concepts: farm-to-table dining and the slow-food movement, an opposition to fast food and the “fast life.” The Cooper Craft Kitchen and Bar in PGA Commons is the newest farm-to-table eatery on the scene and is setting the bar high by using local, fresh, seasonal, high-quality ingredients. Chef Adam Brown has a background in French cuisine and adds Mediterranean touches to his dishes. We have been enjoying Max’s Harvest since it opened in Delray Beach in 2011, and the kitchen always knows how to turn simple ingredients into sheer pleasure. With Executive Chef Eric Baker at the helm, items such as High on the Hog Pork Duo (roasted pork loin and shoulder) and smoked gouda and pancetta macaroni and cheese are Follow me on culinary masterpieces. twitter @PBIsales The Wyndham Hotel in Boca Raton now has Farmer’s Table, which is committed to locally sourced, healthy ingredients like sustainable seafood and cage-free eggs. It may seem surprising to find this type of cuisine in a hotel, but it is quickly becoming the kind of food many diners crave. If you’re vegetarian or vegan, the menu does not disappoint. As the season changes (even when the weather doesn’t), we hope you have an opportunity to experience all that our area has to offer—and to support local restaurants at the time of the year they need it most.

Award-worthy

sive? Absolutely not. But it is a highly curated, and wholly subjective, mix of what we love about Palm Beach now, from glamping in the backwoods of Okeechobee to a chef’s table at the of-the-moment restaurant. Turn to page 47 for the complete list—and if you think we’ve missed something, send us your own choices on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #ThePBIAwards. While we’re highlighting the best of the best, we also thought it would be fun to cover the fall trends in our fashion feature, “Port of Call.” Fashion Editor Katherine Lande presents looks that are most relevant to the Palm Beach wardrobe (loving the fresh take on exotic textiles, always chic in my opinion) against a hyperedgy backdrop: the Port of Palm Beach. Embark on our photographic journey through the fall collections on page 66. If your idea of ports of call involves a sleek, powerful yacht, see “Ultra Yachts” on page 84. Howard Walker, our expert on luxury autos and boats, covers some of the most spectacular floating masterpieces on the market today. If an ultra yacht is in your future, check out Zaha Hadid’s architectural marvel, Jazz, or the wicked-cool trimaran Adastra. And for outfitting that new vessel, see our favorite nautical accessories in Elements (page 104). As you ease into a brand new season this month, there is much in this issue to contemplate and be inspired by. And remember, content is not limited to our printed pages. Enjoy even more of the Palm Beach lifestyle on palmbeachillustrated.com and on all our social channels, and get energized for the exciting months ahead.

In Palm Beach, the “season” begins earlier and earlier. I attribute this to the vibrant and ever-changing mix of residents, many of whom have school-aged children or business concerns that cause them to come back to town by Labor Day. Because September has become the unofficial start of the social season, it also is the perfect time to unveil one of our most exciting features, “The PBI Awards.” In this 19-page editorial package, we share some of our favorite places, moments and experiences from the past year. teven Chase points to an inch-tall pineapple growing inconspicuously among the plants in the Society of the Four Arts’ Botanical Garden. “It’s like a treasure hunt here,” says Chase, the society’s new gardener. He’s right: Noticing every plant among the 170 species in this kempt jungle off Royal Palm Way requires looking up, down and all around as well as using all senses—visitors might miss the just-blooming frangipani or the allspice tree if they didn’t smell them. With so much to take in, we asked Chase to identify a few notto-miss plants in Palm Beach’s lush public enclosure. Look for these unique blooms during your next visit: Ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata): Smell familiar? The fragrance from the long-petaled, yellow-green flowers on this tree, seen in the Four Art’s Chinese garden, is the inspiration for Chanel No. 5. Amorphophallus titanum: Although this Indonesian flower in the property’s Bromeliad Garden is still in its infant stages, the plant is the tallest in the world, reaching roughly 10 feet in height. Old Man palm (Coccothrinax crinita): This palm tree, found in the Bromeliad Garden, gets its funny name from its trunk, which is covered with stringy wood-like fibers, resembling a long shaggy beard. Sausage tree (Kigelia pinnata): Look up and you’ll notice sausageshaped fruit hanging from the limbs of these trees, which grow in the Four Arts’ Bromeliad and Informal gardens. While the African fruit is part of the diet for indigenous animals like elephants, Chase admits he once ate it—“and I’m still alive.” (561-655-7227, fourarts.org)

We took a private tour of the gardens with Chase. Read about it at palmbeachillustrated.com/fourartsgardens

Can you give an example of an exercise incorporated into The Practice? A five-minute morning meditation—just sitting with yourself—is the first “exercise” of the day. When we start the day grounded and connected within, it makes all the difference in the world. Once we get connected inside, there really is no stopping us. 1. Remove old and outdated items before beginning the organizing process. Culling is the best way to “get to know” your wardrobe again. 2. Hang as many items as possible, and always separate items by color. This is a standard visual merchandising trick that allows your eyes to follow the clothes. 3. Always use the same colored hangers. Wellington’s equestrian lifestyle is galloping into the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and two Palm Beachers are leading the way. Mark Bellissimo, CEO of Equestrian Sport Productions LLC, and Sheila Johnson, CEO of Salamander Hotels and Resorts, have partnered to create the Tryon Resort, a luxury retreat in Tryon, North Carolina designed for horse lovers. While the 150-room hotel is under construction until 2016, the resort’s equestrian center opened this summer and, when fully complete, will include riding arenas, 1,000 stalls and a sports complex. The 1,400-acre property will also house vacation rental cabins, an RV park and luxury homes for guests who just don’t want to ride away. (salamanderhotels.com)

A Spirit unearthed An underground concoction produced by bootleggers, distilled deep in nature and stored in a mason jar has a history as proud as its American Southern roots. Moonshine Nation: The Art of Creating Cornbread in a Bottle (Lyons Press, $16.95), written by Palm Beach Illustrated Food and Wine Editor Mark Spivak, tells the controversial story of corn whiskey, the backwoods spirit made in the Appalachian South that plays into the area’s culture even today. Beginning with the Whiskey Rebellion of the 1790s and into prohibition, the narrative features profiles and photos of moonshiners past and present and anecdotal asides like women’s roles in the male-dominant production. The book also includes an index of modern producers along with recipes for now-legal moonshine cocktails, mixed with rebellious backstories. (203-4584500, lyonspress.com)

Style “

The red sole was born from red nail polish. I am giving back to nails what the shoe took from the nails many years ago.” —christian louboutin

Et Voila, Beauté! by katherine lande

As an homage to the lifechanging moment Christian Louboutin decided to paint red nail polish on the soles of a pair of his label’s heels, the designer has introduced a line of polish in colors like Rouge Louboutin (shown, $50). Like Louboutin, the fall collections are inspired by bold color. Turn the page for pieces that roar.
