FIT FOR FOODIES
Be the first to find out which is Palm Beach County’s Best New Restaurant! Tune in to “Trending at 9,” April 10 on CBS12. ’s
Sometimes, the best ideas come out of brainstorming about something else entirely. Such was the case when we conceived our inaugural reader-guided Dining Awards. During a collaborative project session with our broadcast partner, CBS12, publisher Terry Duffy and I batted ideas around with station general manager Mike Pumo and executive news director Adam Henning. The conversation initially focused on shopping and, as great exchanges often do, somehow came around to food, particularly all the fabulous new restaurants popping up in the Palm Beaches. One idea begot another, and before we knew it, we had hatched the inaugural PBI-CBS12 Dining Awards—all in about 10 minutes. Of course, the cross-platform execution took several weeks and a whole lot of research and digital acrobatics, but it was all worth it. An editorial showcase combining PBI’s deep lifestyle expertise and CBS12’s experience in up-to-theminute news coverage, the Dining Awards provide an intriguing glimpse at our area’s prolific dining scene. Turn to “Top Tables” on page 76, and tune in to CBS12 for more winners, including the coveted title of Best New Restaurant. This month, we’re also proud to present our cover story on Ashley and Kurt Busch, Wellington’s newest power couple. Ashley, one of few female pro polo players and a model who serves as a face of the sport, met her match in Kurt, a much-decorated NASCAR racer. Both highly competitive and at the top of their respective games, they find perspective and a sense of calm in their bond, which pushes their achievements even higher. Read about their successes, both as individuals and as a couple, and aspirations in “Horse Power” on page 62. This story, and a few other teases throughout the issue, is particularly timely in light of the U.S. Open Polo Championship tournament, which will be fielded April 4-22 at the International Polo Club Palm Beach. This action-packed event promises to end the season with a bang. I’m ready for it—aren’t you?

Building a better firm.
The marital law boutiques of Fisher, Bendeck & Potter and the Law Office of Benjamin T. Hodas merged on January 1, 2018, bringing partners Jeff Fisher, Zac Potter, and Ben Hodas together in a single firm. The merger creates a firm of attorneys who trained with Jeff Fisher while he litigated billions of dollars of divorce and asset recovery cases in Florida and throughout the United States. The New York Times recently referred to the Fisher team as a “highly creative wealth squad” that is unlike your “normal” family law practice. For select clients in need of their services, Fisher, Potter, and Hodas have combined to create a bigger and better firm than ever before.

Lady Bird Johnson once said, “Where flowers bloom so does hope.” This month, Palm Beach County residents can foster a new hope for a healthy, sustainable planet at numerous environmental events and Earth Day celebrations. On April 7, join the Historical Society of Palm Beach County (hspbc.org) for the inaugural Everglades Day. A series of free lectures and exhibitions will explore the history, preservation, and value of this extraordinary ecosystem. The following weekend, head north for the fourth annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival, taking place April 14 at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum (jupiterlighthouse.org). Held in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the Wild & Scenic Rivers Act, the evening will feature live music and short films that reveal today’s environmental challenges and the activism being done to prevent future damage. Loggerhead Marinelife Center (marinelife.org) in Juno Beach will also observe the holiday on April 14 with a beach cleanup scheduled in the morning and turtle yard tours happening all day long. On Earth Day Eve—i.e. April 21—Daggerwing Nature Center at Boca Raton’s Burt Aaronson South County Regional Park (pbcparks.com) will host an Earth Day Celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Guests at this free gathering can take part in animal encounters and releases as well as interactive demonstrations. Finally, on April 22, ring in Earth Day at Palm Beach Zoo’s Party for the Planet (palmbeachzoo.org). Beginning at 11 a.m., visitors will be treated to family-friendly activities that highlight ecological wonders and fascinating wildlife. Environmental enthusiasts should also swing by Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens (ansg.org) for a free community forum that will bring together art, science, and the natural world. Five county nonprofits will participate in a panel discussion and also present individual learning stations to illustrate the steps they’re taking to raise awareness about preservation. —Mary Murray

The Write Stuff
With a little motherly help, Charles Todd has forged a successful career as a mystery writer
Charles Todd and his mother, Caroline Todd, have penned more than 30 books.
f you’ve seen Charles Todd around Palm Beach but can’t quite place his face, that suits the award-winning author just fine. “Most people can’t remember the photo on the back of a book,” says Todd, who resides in North Palm Beach. “I enjoy my anonymity.” But Todd isn’t the only one on those back covers; he happily splits that space with his mother, Caroline Todd, of Greenville, Delaware. Since 1994, the mother-and-son writing team has coauthored 32 historical mysteries (primarily set in post-WWI England) and more than 20 short stories. The pair has always shared a love of history and mystery (Todd fondly recalls his mother reading Sherlock Holmes adventures to him as a child), and it was Caroline who suggested they collaborate and put these passions to pen and paper. Writing is a second career for both, although Todd cites a familial storytelling tradition to include summer days spent on screened porches listening to his grandfather reminisce and tell tales. Polished manners and a touch of an accent hint at Todd’s early Southern roots but don’t convey his past life as a business consultant and
I’ve developed a professional respect and [have seen] a side of my mother I would never have seen had we not gone through this process.” 36
operations analyst. He applies this background and knack for logistics to his working relationship with Caroline, whom he affectionately calls the brains behind the books. “I’m glad we didn’t [write together] until I had gone to college, had a successful career, and had lived on my own for quite some time,” Todd explains. “I’ve developed a professional respect and [have seen] a side of my mother I would never have seen had we not gone through this process.” A number of their stories revolve around two characters: Bess Crawford, a WWI battlefield nurse, and Scotland Yard detective Ian Rutledge. Their latest title, The Gate Keeper (William Morrow, $27), came out in February and follows Rutledge on a quest to uncover the truth behind a puzzling roadside death. The Gate Keeper is the twentieth release in this New York Times– best-selling series. As with all of their books, Todd and his mother worked separately throughout the process. “Even when we’re in the same place, we don’t work in the same room,” he says. “We [each] write a chapter and send it back and forth until we’re both satisfied.” When Todd isn’t writing or traveling to England to research his next project, he and lady friend Dianna Collier spend time on Palm Beach. They attend services at the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea and frequent island hot spots like Ta-boo and The Chesterfield. Todd is also a member of The Society of the Four Arts and the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach, organizations that speak to his interests in literature and history. And, together with Collier, Todd is pursuing yet another pastime: antiquing. “[We’ve] spent a lot of time antiquing on the island to furnish our new home and lighten my wallet,” he muses. After Hannah Cecil Gurney of de Gournay learned Aquazzura designer Edgardo Osorio had her brand’s wallpaper installed in his apartment, the two teamed up for a footwear collaboration that incorporated de Gournay’s hand-painted, tropical chinoiserie. Now in its second collection, the five limited-edition styles present a print of the original artwork, inspired by Osorio’s stockpile of nineteenthcentury botanical illustrations, on aqua blue suede. Featuring lush flora, cranes, monkeys, and butterflies, these shoes ooze old-Florida style. Keep reading for more colorful picks.
