On the cover Each year, local artists submit their work to be considered for the Palm Beach Charity Register cover competition—a tradition that aims to highlight our vibrant arts community.

This year’s winning piece is “Reflecting Pool” by Sarah LaPierre. An acrylic painter based in West Palm Beach, LaPierre’s heavily textured and vibrantly colorful paintings are inspired by her love of local flora and fauna and spending time outside.

She says “Reflecting Pool” recalls the landscape of Key West. “For me this piece captures a moment of oasis, pausing to appreciate the ocean breeze on a blazing Florida day.” She is a second-generation artist; her late father, Joseph LaPierre, remains one of the biggest influences on her work, having passed down the palette knife technique used in her “thick paint” impasto style. “It’s a playful challenge,” LaPierre says. “It’s an invigorating and pretty physical process to create.”

H

indsight, they say, is 20/20. While many of us may look forward to the moment when 2020 will be relegated to the rearview, tough times like these often bring out the best in any community—including our own. We’ve been challenged to behave in ways that are strange and uncomfortable. To amplify voices that have been ignored. To put the greater good at the forefront of our day-to-day routines.

Sure, it’s been exhausting, frustrating, and even scary. But when it comes down to it, we know that growth and comfort never coexist. Even in the midst of viruses, vaccines, protests, and politics, we’ve been given the gift of growth that tells us: We are resilient. We are agile. We are capable of great things.

It’s that kind of growth that makes a community like ours special—and in this issue of the Palm Beach Charity Register, we highlight local heroes who have put their hands out to help in a time of crisis. From mask manufacturing to chocolate crafting, the Palm Beaches’ socially and environmentally conscious entrepreneurs are making it their mission to serve the greater good while staying financially solvent (page 12). As the local hospitality industry reels from pandemic-induced closures, commercial kitchens have turned into mass production facilities to feed those in need, and restaurant parking lots have become drive-through lines offering meals to frontline workers (page 16).

And with many area stages and museums still dark, our arts organizations have adapted—offering podcasts, downloads, and streaming content to expand our horizons beyond our quarantine bubbles (page 14).

It’s a brave new season this year—unlike any other the Palm Beaches has ever seen. There will be virtual events, socially distanced events, masked events (and not of the chic masquerade kind). Beginning on page 27, our listing of local nonprofits and fundraising festivities is your go-to guide to 105 charity events and campaigns. You may find fewer in-person events to fill your calendar this year. But you will discover a wealth of ways to help local organizations that are working—with resilience and agility—to continue to do great things for those in need.

With more and more startups pegging their mission to global welfare, social entrepreneurship is more than a movement; it’s redefining what it means to do business. We highlight four local founders with goodwill at heart.

1909: SUPPORTING SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS STARTUPS West Palm Beach–based community incubator 1909—harking to the year Palm Beach County was founded—is both a social enterprise and a local hotspot for up-and-coming local entrepreneurs developing socially conscious ventures. Director Shana Ostrovitz shares her take on the rise of social entrepreneurship: “There’s a growing awareness of systemic issues in our society, and I think people are realizing that entrepreneurs are the ones best equipped to solve these problems since the solutions will take creativity, ingenuity, and agility.

What’s motivating a lot of founders today is the desire to solve big problems, in contrast to historical ideas that money and stability are the main business drivers. I think we’ll continue to see the rise of social ventures and see new business models, like decentralized organizations, become more popular.”

Victoria Parks and Jamie Grooms founded their Fort Pierce–based commercial shellfish hatchery in the name of sustainable aquaculture. With an aim to relieve pressure on the wild clam population, the company is increasing domestic clam production through sea-friendly farming practices. Seaventure Clam Co. offers both a stable seed supply to farmers and a line of artisanal clam chowders to everyday consumers.

Also under the Seaventure umbrella? Large-scale restoration efforts to clean coastal waterways.

CREATIVE FUNDRAISING EFFORTS OFFER A WIN-WIN Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa hosted the Artist Paddleboard Series—a silent auction featuring paddleboards with custom artwork by Donald Robertson, creative director at Estée Lauder; artist Lulu DK; and fine-art photographer Nick Mele—all to benefit Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s annual fund.

Valerie Herskowitz started The Chocolate Spectrum in 2013 as a post-graduation activity for her autistic son, Blake. Their artisinal chocolate company soon expanded to a shop in Jupiter, employing 15 individuals with developmental disabilities to craft chocolates and other confections. All proceeds from the sales of the lovingly made sweets—which can be shipped anywhere in the U.S.—support the organization’s chocolatier training program.

Local designers partnered with Koi Design Group to create a series of 13 chic and swanky pet beds, generating around $10,000 at the 2020 Fur Ball Silent Auction to benefit the Darbster Foundation.

Over-the-top creations ranged from mini chaise lounges to four-poster beds for four-legged friends. The third annual pet bed auction is scheduled for March 7, 2021, at Club Colette.

sewing funky frocks for her Arts Warehouse–based fashion brand, The House of Perna, when COVID-19 hit, Amanda Perna reoriented her workflow to craft masks by the thousands. Within weeks, Perna had reemployed 12 out-of-work seamstresses and donated 5,000 reusable fabric face masks to frontline workers. “For every $25 mask purchased, we donate one to someone in need,” Perna says. “We have donated to over 45 different hospitals and organizations, and farm workers and frontline workers all over the United States.”

Norton Museum of Art’s coloring pages

By Alexa Becker Kravis Center for the Performing Arts Educating budding performers is of the utmost importance for the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach. In response to pandemic restrictions, the Kravis introduced virtual Bring Down the House classes, focusing on subjects like monologues, playwriting, musical theater dance, and stagecraft.

The Kravis also extended its digital education offerings to include Kravis @ Home, an online database of concerts and activities. Geared toward kids up to 5 years old, the Learn & Play series used video storytelling to engage young ones in subjects like West African folk stories. Older students could access study guides designed to introduce them to themes in Broadway musicals like Mean Girls, which is slated to run at the Kravis Center this season. (kravis.org) Norton Museum of Art Classes were on hold at the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach during the pandemic, but the organization made art activities available for families to try at home. It also introduced A Closer Look podcast series, presenting a deep dive into works from the museum’s collection. During regu-

lar operations, the Norton presents programming such as Family Studio on Saturdays, late-night photoshoots for teens, and themed field trips. It even provides free entry to all Florida educators.

Perhaps the Norton’s most prominent educational program is Art After Dark. Held on Friday evenings, this free experience is geared toward getting families involved in the arts together. When programming moved online as a result of the pandemic, Art After Dark became a monthly streaming event presented collaboratively with local artists and musicians. Palm Beach Symphony Orchestra Music education has always been a priority for the Palm Beach Symphony. Working in conjunction with Creative Arts Therapy of the Palm Beaches, the symphony presented Nurturing Notes. This program brought interactive sessions to patients at Quantum House and the Palm Beach Children’s Hospital at Saint Mary’s. CEO David McClymont stressed the importance of maintaining access to music therapy in order to keep participants’ morale high while adapting to the situation and also dealing with illnesses.

The symphony’s typical educational initiatives stem from the Paul Palm Beach Symphony and Sandra Goldner Conservatory of

Throughout the year, the conservatory not only donates instruments to children in need, but also presents children’s concerts, hosts age-appropriate lectures on composers and pieces of music, and participates in STEAM Nights at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. (palmbeach symphony.org) Cultural Council for Palm Beach County The Cultural Council in Lake Worth Beach makes access to art education easy for both educators and parents, to include compiling resources such as an annual guide to cultural programs and organizations. Its signature Arts in My Backyard series focuses on outreach, field trips, after-school programming, early learners, and family Saturdays. To continue that work during the pandemic, the Cultural Council mounted a Summer Performing Arts Series of virtual concerts and exhibitions and curated a database of virtual educational experiences presented by organizations across the county. Feeding South Florida increased its distribution sites and food supply to help people in need.

AMID A GLOBAL PANDEMIC, THE CULINARY COMMUNITY CAME TOGETHER TO NOURISH NEIGHBORS IN NEED

When South Florida restaurants closed their doors in March to comply with COVID-19 safety regulations, the ripple effect was immediate: Restaurant owners found their balance sheets in the red. Kitchen creatives and waitstaff found themselves out of work. Food distributors and local farmers found their supply chain cut off.

It was a crisis, for sure. But food people are a tightly knit bunch, and they pride themselves on their resilience and ingenuity, both in the kitchen and outside of it. Instead of sinking, they decided to swim—helping their own industry, the community that supports it, and people who simply needed meals to keep going.

Here’s a look at a few ways that chefs and community organizers put themselves on the line to provide sustenance to South Florida in the time of COVID-19.

FEEDING SOUTH FLORIDA In addition to maintaining three regular pantry sites, Feeding South Florida—the area’s leading hunger relief organization—established a COVID-19 Response Fund. With an emphasis on providing food to families who rely on school meals as a source of nutrition for their children, FSF launched a handful of drive-through food distribution centers aimed to connect people with dependable, nourishing meals. ( feedingsouth florida.org) HOWLEY’S When his restaurants were shuttered in the wake of the quarantine, Rodney Mayo, owner of the Subculture restaurant group, turned his West Palm Beach restaurant Howley’s into a driveup destination to feed thousands of hospitality workers who had been furloughed or laid off as a result of the pandemic. Lines formed around the block as people pulled up curbside, popped their trunks, and received hot meals to take home to their families. Building on the program’s success, Mayo added a second service: weekly grocery pickup, offering pre-packed bags of essential produce and proteins, along with healthy meal ideas printed on recipe cards. THE ADDISION OF BOCA RATON The historic Addison of Boca Raton partnered with the nonprofit group Boca Helping Hands, to donate 700 meals each week. Volunteers delivered the food to homebound residents and served hot meals at BHH’s locations in Boca and Boynton Beach. Wayside House is a nonprofit, women’s substance-use disorder program founded in 1974 by Susan B. Anthony and Phyllis Michelfelder. Hatching Hope

Maybe you’ve seen one on a morning beach

walk. A dark fluttering in the sand, no larger than the size of a child’s fist. From May to September, it’s a common beachcomber find: a sea turtle hatchling who didn’t make it to the ocean after emerging from its shell and sandy nest.

Armed with a round-the-clock rescue hotline and a secured cooler where community members can safely deposit stranded baby sea turtles, Juno Beach’s Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) is working to bring local sea turtle hatchlings to safety and—in time—return them to the wild.

and released more than 1,100 rescued sea turtle hatchlings back to the sea. With research indicating that only 1 in 1,000 hatchlings will survive into adulthood, Clasen admits that LMC’s work offers slim margins to measure success.
