Editor’s note

Look good, feel good

©LILA PHOTO

I

don’t know about you, but I’ve pretty much been living in cutoff jean shorts and old tank tops for the past few months. Throw on some lipstick for the occasional Zoom meeting and I’m good to go. I mean, what’s the point of putting in effort these days when the only being who sees me regularly is my neighbor’s cat, Hurley, who stops by my patio to say hello in the evenings? But there is a point: Don’t you just feel good about yourself when you look your best? I do! That’s why we’ve devoted much of this issue to style. Fall is around the corner, and there’s no better time to reinvent your vibe with the latest fashion and fresh makeup ideas. One look I’m loving this season is the subtly chic combo of earthy, neutral tones and barely there makeup—get inspired by “Nude Attitude” on page 44. While we still don’t know exactly how professional sports are going to shape up in the age of COVID, the Kentucky Derby is on for September 5 (pushed back from May this year). We put together a few gorgeous ensembles to celebrate race day on page 40. We also talk to local boutique owners about the latest trends they’re excited about (page 15), try our hand at the Lighthouse ArtCenter’s virtual jewelry-making classes (page 22), showcase some super-stylish boho home decor (page 28), and offer expert advice on rejuvenating your hair and skin post-summer (page 18) so you can look your absolute best heading into the second half of what has been a less-thaneasy 2020 thus far. On that note, I truly believe one of the keys to enhancing beauty is to practice positivity. It’s challenging at times, but being grateful for what we have, showing kindness toward others, and simply smiling through it all is the epitome of beautiful. Read more about that in “Beauty from Within” on page 52. You’ll also find the usual suspects like stories on the latest foodie news, the arts scene, and more. And I have to give a shout-out to local designer Tara Gray, whose colorful aesthetic is a splash of happiness in these uncertain times—her story brightens our pages beginning on page 32. I hope you enjoy this issue, and I look forward to getting back out there and meeting y’all (hopefully) sometime soon. Peace and blessings,

Post-Summer Beauty Repair 5 WAYS TO HEAL YOUR BODY FROM THE INSIDE OUT b y T R AC Y M A R C E L LO

Summer often means long hours in the sun, soaks in salt water and chlorine, and barefoot walks on the beach—all of which can take a bit of a toll on the body. Help keep your skin healthy and glowing into autumn with these tips from area experts.

1

DRY SKIN THE FIX: “It’s not what you put on your body but what you put in your body that can have a major effect on your skin,” says Shannon Bonsell, clinical nutrition manager at Jupiter Medical Center’s Cary Grossman Health and Wellness Center. She recommends consuming fewer carbohydrates and more healthy fats. “Dry skin can be related to an imbalance or deficiency of fat in your diet since water in our cells is linked to the metabolism of fats,” she says. Good sources of fat include coconut or olive oil, avocados, nuts and seeds, fish and shellfish, grass-fed meats, and eggs. And of course, don’t forget to drink plenty of water.

2

SUN-DAMAGED HAIR THE FIX: “Organic extra-virgin coconut oil is a natural way to moisturize your hair, scalp to ends, and will also repair and prevent breakage,” says Julia McClintock, co-owner of Fox and the Bee salon in Tequesta. “Not to mention, it gives you some awesome shine!” McClintock suggests applying coconut oil to the hair once a week. Let it sit for 20 minutes or longer and follow with shampoo and conditioner. For a bonus treatment, she also loves R+Co.’s Super Garden products, which provide UV protection and are available at the salon.

3

CRACKED HEELS THE FIX: CBD or hemp oil (not to be confused with hemp seed oil) is the latest trend in skin care, and it can be an excellent addition to at-home pedicures, says Pamela Caldwell, spa, salon, and fitness director at The Club at Admirals Cove. “Studies of the endocannabinoid system have found that hemp may be able to regulate the life cycle of cells, leading to more youthful skin,” she explains. Caldwell recommends massaging a high-quality lotion infused with the oil into heels regularly to soften cracked skin. “A pedicure with CBD is not only a treat

18

for your feet, but it can also provide muscle and joint relief for anyone suffering from arthritis or other foot ailments,” she adds.

4

PEELING SUNBURN THE FIX: A sunburn that peels or blisters can be one of the most painful side effects of prolonged sun exposure. Dr. Laura Greyling, a dermatologist in the Jupiter office of Water’s Edge Dermatology, says the most important thing you can do after a sunburn is commit to it being your last. “Figure out how your sun protection fell short to avoid making the same mistakes in the future,” she says. Stay out of the sun while your sunburn heals and relieve some of the discomfort by using cold compresses; applying a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer or aloe-based product to the skin; and taking ibuprofen for pain (as long as that is safe for you). Making sure you are hydrated is also key to a quick recovery.

5

SUNSPOTS THE FIX: Before beginning any cosmetic treatment for sunspots, Dr. Greyling strongly recommends being evaluated by a board-certified dermatologist, as melanoma can often 5 appear as a sunspot on the face. If it is just a sunspot, remedies like vitamin C serums and retinol products can help fade them—but prevention is key. “Daily use of broadspectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 30 is necessary even if you don’t plan on spending an extended amount of time outside,” says Greyling. Her colleague, Dr. John Minni, also suggests using a sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, like EltaMD or CeraVe. “In-office treatments including peels, liquid nitrogen, and laser therapies are very safe and quite effective as well,” he adds. ❖

Radar / GAME ON

SNOOK SEASON:

Up Your Game EXPERTS SHARE SOME OF THEIR TRICKS TO LANDING A SNOOK by STEPHEN BROWN

A

s the first tides of September wash ashore in Jupiter, so does the start of snook season. Hot spots such as the Jupiter Inlet and Loxahatchee River are ideal for game fish, with thousands of snook swimming the inshore havens. Still, these are some finicky fish! Here’s how to increase your odds of snagging a trophy.

TACKLE Jupiter Bait and Tackle is a local institution. Situated on Center Street, the shop has been supplying anglers with the gear, bait, and know-how for catching snook since 1980. Stop in (it’s open seven days a week), and owner Roger Tompkins is happy to offer tips and advice for your next fishing excursion. Jupiter Bait and Tackle, 141 Center St., Jupiter, jupiterbaitandtackle.com

BAIT Live bait is resupplied daily at Jupiter Bait and Tackle, but Tompkins warns there’s no “one” good bait that will always draw a snook. “You need to figure out what they

20

like,” he says. That said, the shop carries options like greenies, pinfish, and croakers delivered by local bait fishermen. Of course, the mullet run offers the do-it-yourselfer a chance to fill the bait bucket with a quick toss of a cast net or sabiki rig. When all else fails, a proper topwater plug will do the trick. For local waters, Bomber brand’s Long A and Saltwater Grade Wind-Cheater or Rapala’s Saltwater Skitter Walk are highly recommended by area fishermen.

erman in mind, allowing for the wearer to cut through South Florida’s harsh glare and see deep into the water to spy otherwise invisible shadows of fish. The Ocearch Reefton (from $209, costadelmar.com) is stylish, functional—and every purchase helps fund an Ocearch research expedition.

HOT SPOTS GEAR The right equipment is key to a successful day on the water. Here, Robert “Woody” Woodard and his team at The Snook Nook in Jensen Beach recommend some supplies: Rod: The Star VPR Inshore rod packs enough bend and strength to keep the fish on without fear of snapping. For snook, light action won’t do, so grab the 7’6” Medium Heavy-Fast ($290, starfishingtackle.com), the perfect mix of lightweight, cutting-edge technology and functionality to land the game. Reel: Pair that Star with a Penn and look the part. For larger game like snook, the Spinfisher VI 5500 ($190, pennfishing.com) rigged with a 20-pound braid is more than adequate. This rugged, finely tuned spinning reel is the perfect addition to the quiver as an all-around fisher. Shades: When fishing, seeing is half the battle—which means a proper pair of polarized sunglasses is a must. Costa Del Mar’s 580 blue-mirrored lenses were meticulously designed with the fish-

With a diverse array of environs, snook fishing in the Jupiter area is world-class. Tompkins recommends posting up near most of the bridges at the spillways at dawn or dusk (if they’re open to public fishing). And head out late—anywhere from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m—to ensure a better ambush. “You hear a lot more snook hitting around those times of the day,” he says. Getting skunked? Follow the bait. With the mullet run in full swing, finding an active feeding is as simple as searching out some roiling water. Notes Tompkins: “Finger mullets run back in the river, around the inlet, and off the beaches.” ❖

KEY INFO SNOOK SEASON: September 1 to December 14; February 1 to May 31 SLOT LIMIT: 28 to 32 inches in length; one per angler per day RULES: Both snook permit and recreational fishing license required; hook-and-line only

in Training OUR MANAGING EDITOR GETS CREATIVE WITH JEWELRY AND METALSMITHING COURTESY OF LIGHTHOUSE ARTCENTER’S VIRTUAL CLASSES by MELISSA PUPPO

H

ere’s a fun fact about me: Each year, I make a goal list with aspirations I’d like to accomplish—and I don’t revisit the list until right before the ball drops a year later, when I celebrate my successes. For as long as I can remember, I’ve included “jewelry making” on that list. I’ve forever been a fan of accessories, and the thought of creating a design myself has always been alluring. But I found myself continually copying and pasting those words over to the following year’s list. But this year would be different! Even with all of its quirks and uncertainties, 2020 has already marked the year I finally crossed that goal off my list, thanks to the Lighthouse ArtCenter Gallery and School of Art, which offers classes and workshops in mediums like ceramics, drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, and, you guessed it, jewelry making. I began my designing journey via a virtual Intro to Jewelry class with Lisa Johnson, the center’s director of jewelry and textiles. Since I’d be attending class through Zoom at home, I stopped by Lighthouse ArtCenter a few days beforehand to pick up my materials—things like pliers, sandpaper, saws, pieces of copper, and a C-clamp. I’d be crafting a pierced and riveted pendant with a tab setting for a cabochon (a gemstone that’s polished but not faceted), which I planned to wear as a necklace. On the day of class, I logged in to Zoom to begin my group lesson, which usually allows for up to 10 people. Johnson started instruction by going over the materials we’d be using. She also reviewed some terminology, such as “cold connection setting” (it’s how you attach metal or mixed media without the need for any heat). From there, I used a Sharpie to trace my stone onto a piece of copper, then freehandedly drew a floral design around the stone’s outline. We also had to measure out and draw four prongs that would secure the stone later. The trickiest part for me was learning to use the C-clamp and

saw blades to cut out my design from the copper. Johnson emphasized the technique of sawing up and down and not pushing forward, a habit I quickly learned to stop six broken saw blades later. Throughout the class, she made sure I was following along at a comfortable pace and took time to show examples of her work for guidance. Once I successfully cut out my pendant, I filed it down and softened the edges with sandpaper, then used pliers to curl the prongs to fit my stone. It took several tries, but my patience and perseverance were worth it. Finally, I reached the last step, curling my cold connection setting—which is where I plan to thread a chain to wear the pendant as a necklace. My next project with Johnson will involve making a copper ring, and let’s just say I’m stoked about next week’s class. Classes range from $315 to $425 (early fall sessions run for seven weeks; fall sessions are eight weeks). Visit lighthousearts.org for the virtual-class schedule and for the latest on when in-person classes will resume. v

Painting the Future ROCHELLE IRONS CREATES ART INSPIRED BY HER PAST— AND HER DREAMS OF THE BEAUTY THAT LIES AHEAD

ochelle Irons’ earliest memories are of a childhood spent on the water. Born in a small city in Pennsylvania, she and her family traveled to Florida every winter, and when Irons was 10, they moved onto a boat, anchoring at different islands in the Bahamas. They traversed the seas for months on end, dipping down into South America, and even had a run-in with pirates after their boat took in water during a rough

24

storm that landed them off the coast of Venezuela. “It was two weeks before [the Coast Guard] could come,” she recalls. Living on the boat, says Irons, now 44, is a big part of what shaped who she is today. The family eventually made their way to South Florida and settled in Palm Beach Gardens, where Irons now lives. Her love of art was apparent from an early age: At 14, she painted T-shirts and sold them on the beach to make pocket money. But it wasn’t until she was struggling as a single parent of two small 5 boys that she decided to pursue her passion more seriously. “I started painting as a way to process my emotions,” she says. “I knew I had to make a choice—either I was going to be this bitter, resentful person because my life was not planning out as I had envisioned it or I was going to find a way to see the beauty in the new path that was before me.” She found that new path

with the creation of her brand, Green Papaya Palace, in 2018. The name pays homage to her love of the environment and her humble abode abounding with fruit trees, namely papaya. Her creativity comes to life in her studio, which is right in her backyard. Her first professional painting, a selfportrait entitled Moonlight Dreamer, is

the only original she won’t sell. It centers on a woman who is part of the ocean and night sky. Two small stars represent Irons’ sons, whom she has continued to incorporate into every piece of artwork since. “I knew they had to be a priority,” she says. “They are what drive my choices.” She has created countless pieces, often tying in her connection to the sea. “The ocean is my home, where I grew up,” she says. “So I always go back to that. It’s my harmony.” She also makes prints and sculptures, which she sells online and shows in local galleries as well as restaurants and doctors’ offices. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Irons pivoted her creativity to make face masks, selling them around the world. Recently, Irons was commissioned by TideHouse in Stuart to create pieces for the new restaurant. “I loved how instantly we were on the same wavelength with the concept, but then they were willing to let me run with it,” she says. Her artful additions include several indoor

paintings, a wave mural on the restaurant’s curvy walkway, and hand-made fish sculptures made from resin, which is her favorite medium. Irons plans to renovate a 1967 Airstream and turn it into a mobile art studio so she can take it to art shows. She also launched

a new swimwear line that will be carried by Mermaid Bungalow and will release limited-edition prints every couple of months in several styles, as well as beach towels and totes. But until more businesses resume normal operations, she says she’s happy to be spending time with her kids and creating art. “I’m making memories with my family, and that is every bit important,” she says. “And I’m just in my little studio making art and hoping that when things open up, I’ll have a lot to put out there.” greenpapayapalace.com ❖

Secrets to Success JANNA AND MARC RONERT EXPAND THEIR BEAUTY EMPIRE WITH THEIR LATEST LAUNCH, HUSH & HUSH by MICHELE MEYER

I

f not for a chance encounter at a medical convention in Houston 16 years ago, Image Skincare might not be the global success it is today. That’s where Janna (Levendofsky) Ronert, a medical supply salesperson who was then living in the host

26

city, met Dr. Marc Ronert, a board-certified aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon from Düsseldorf, Germany. “Call it accident, luck, or fate,” Marc says of meeting Janna at the three-day convention. The first night, Janna invited Marc to play pool. “We very quickly found that we were a

perfect match not only on an emotional level but also on a business level,” says Marc. A cross-Atlantic courtship followed. Eight months later, he proposed atop the Eiffel Tower. They married in Palm Beach in 2007 and settled in Frenchman’s Reserve in Palm Beach Gardens, where Marc had lived as a teenage exchange student. Over the early years of their romantic and business partnership, the botanicalbased skin care line Janna had started in 2003 in her onebedroom Houston apartment took off worldwide. She credits the success to the merger of her and Marc’s backgrounds and skills—he is a doctor and she is a marketer with vision, ambition, and knowledge about manufacturing. Today, Image Skincare employs 250 and sells to nearly 25,000 dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and spas in 60 countries. “We built a global brand so quickly because I knew the beauty end, and he knew the science,” says Janna, CEO of the company. Now the couple has added another brand to their health care repertoire: Hush & Hush, a line of luxury nutraceuticals launched in 2019. “We want to be the Chanel of supplements,” says Marc, president and research

director at both companies. The first “Hush,” he explains, is because “nobody wants to disclose their age.” The second is because their formula is a secret. The line features products such as plant-based vegan protein powders, as well as supplements for anti-aging, hair growth, and protein deficiency. The couple works together out of their headquarters in Jupiter, a location Marc says was “the best choice we’ve made business-wise,” as well as for their lifestyle. They are raising two 11-year-old twins and enjoy golfing, tennis, and horseback riding. Health and beauty are such a part of their life, their home features a spa and a yoga studio. “We practice what we preach headto-toe,” says Janna. Their success also enabled them to create the Care for Skin Foundation in 2011. Twice a year, Marc and a team of nurses and doctors perform free reconstructive surgeries on children with burns, tumors, and cleft palates in places like Peru, Niger, and Vietnam. “It’s a great way for us to give back,” he says. Hush & Hush and Image Skincare are available online and at local salons and spas. Visit hushandhush.com and imageskincare.com for a list of retail locations. ❖

The World of Tara Gray MEET THE INTERIOR DESIGNER WHOSE ADVENTUROUS SOUL HAS LED HER FROM COLORADO TO HAWAII TO TEQUESTA by S KY E S H E R M A N

A

lthough she traces her roots to the earthy tones of Palisade, Colorado, design maven Tara Gray leads what can best be described as a colorful life. She has drawn inspiration from stints in vibrant Hawaii and, now, South Florida, but her passion for styling is a lifelong affair. Way back in middle school, she wrote her “Career Day” report on interior design. By high school, she had attended summer camp at the Art Institute of Colorado. Thinking back, Gray says it was the trips she took with her parents every summer that instilled in her a love of design. “My dad would always drive around older historic neighborhoods and look at the beautiful homes in those areas,” she recalls. Upon graduating from high school, Gray left her hometown behind and enrolled in the interior design program at the Art Institute of Colorado, intending to focus on historical preservation. But when her studies

32

introduced her to hospitality design, she shifted her focus. Armed with a bachelor’s degree in interior design, Gray embarked on a career in commercial and hospitality design in 2000. After working for a couple of studios in Denver and Colorado Springs, she changed gears again and took a job as department chair of the interior design program at a local college, launching her own business at the same time with projects including an award-winning design for a recording studio in Old Colorado City. It was on the job that she met her husband, Luc, a custom luxury home builder, in 2002. Five years later, they married in Maui, sight unseen, simply because Hawaii seemed to them the ultimate in destination-wedding locations. Their beach ceremony was complete with Hawaiian music, a local minister, native flowers, hula dancers, a luau, and a honeymoon on nearby Molokai. Predictably, they fell in love with the islands. “We were one of those stereotypical

couples who say, ‘Oh my gosh, wouldn’t it be so great to give everything up and move here?’” Gray explains. But with a life back in Colorado, they put the idea to rest as a “someday” dream, returned home, and welcomed a baby girl, Channing, in 2011. Within a few years, however, Luc’s business partner announced he was moving—and Gray also felt ready for a change. “[Luc and I] both said, ‘We’ve lived in Colorado our whole lives; we can either stay here and look for something [different to do] or maybe it’s time we start looking elsewhere,” says Gray. “Maybe this is the time we take a chance. What if this is the Hawaii opportunity? What if we just did it?’” Suddenly, all the pieces began falling into place. Through Instagram, Gray serendipitously found Luc a job in Hawaii. They sold all of their belongings and, 3-year-old Channing in tow, headed to the Pacific in 2014. Once there, Gray landed

a job as design director for Henderson Design Group, a luxury residential firm with locations on the Big Island and in San Francisco. Working on the island had a great effect on Gray’s eye. “Moving to Hawaii was a huge influence on me for residential design,” she says. “There’s a really beautiful vintage aspect to designing in Hawaii because it has such a deep and rich history, and while I’ve always loved designing with lots of color, Hawaii really introduced me to a more tropical, juicy, vibrant color palette—really fresh colors.” Outside of designing luxury residences on Hawaii’s ritzy Golden Coast—akin to our Jupiter Island or Palm Beach— Gray began flexing her entrepreneurial muscles and renewed her focus on a blog and Instagram page she had launched in 2011, The Modern Maven (modernmaven.net). The blog is dedicated to her unique brand of colorful design, and while caring for a newborn, it had served as a creative outlet for sharing craft projects, basic home-decorating tips, and

cooking and baking exploits. Before long, Gray’s desire for a deeper creative outlet synced with her fondness for vintage VW buses and would later morph into another business venture. She purchased a 1978 bus on Craigslist and had it shipped from Seattle across the Pacific. She designed a digital floral vinyl wrap for the bus, administering light renovations to transform the vehicle into a tropical oasis on wheels, dubbing her creation “Miss Maven.”

36

The Grays embraced the aloha spirit for three years on Hawaii and another three on Maui until a new opportunity, this time in the form of a large Palm Beach project, brought island life to a close in the Pacific but landed them in another American paradise on the East Coast—Tequesta. This past January, they relocated, taking Miss Maven along with them. The bus traversed from Maui to Oahu to Los Angeles, then on to an open-air transport semi that toted it across the country.

From left: The bedroom of Gray’s young daughter, Channing; Gray likes to cycle around town with her French bulldog, Moku (“Mo”).

“I try to drive her as much as I can around our little town here, and I get stopped constantly,” says Gray. She and her family often pop by local haunts like Perk Coffee House and pottery classes at Clay Haus. “People wave, and they want to chat. In Hawaii, they call it ‘talk story’— everybody wants to ‘talk story.’ Everybody wants to know what [Miss Maven] is and what she’s about and why I have her, which has been lovely in a brand-new place.” What Miss Maven is, is a mobile business (hellomissmaven.com). Gray styles and stages the bus, renting it out for photo shoots and events like corporate fundraisers, picnics, baby showers, engagements, birthday parties, weddings, and beyond. She primarily promotes it through Instagram, which holds a special place in her heart for deeper reasons. Instagram launched right around the time Gray gave birth to her daughter, and as she battled postpartum depression, the inspiration she found through the online community helped her pull through to sunnier days. “From the very beginning, when I started using [Instagram], it was just about the connection,” she says. Connection—and Instagram—has helped Gray with other personal things as well, like decorating her own home. While still living in Hawaii, she had spotted a wall of grass-skirted statuettes at the reception desk of The Laylow hotel in Oahu and immediately knew she wanted a similar display in her own home. But finding exactly what you want on the island isn’t always easy. “I used to love to thrift in Colorado, but there are not a lot of thrift stores in Hawaii,” she says. “It’s an island, so stuff only comes so far.”

She turned to her favorite app for help: “I put an Instagram post up saying, ‘I want to re-create this. Any of you who are out thrifting and find a hula girl, I will pay you for it and pay for shipping if you’ll send it to me.’” Vintage hula girls poured in from around the world— Germany, Spain, Canada, even South Korea—and not a single follower would accept payment from Gray. “It makes me

38

smile for more than just the fact that they’re cute hula girls,” she muses about the 92 statuettes now adorning her Tequesta home. “It’s a very special collection.” Beyond the funky wall of hula dancers, Gray wasted no time in converting her family’s new home into a color-splashed “tropical vintage beach house,” as she describes it—a haven of happy that even quarantine can’t overshadow. ❖

Beauty from Within

5 KEY WAYS TO MAKE SURE YOU ALWAYS LOOK YOUR BEST by J A N A S O E L D N E R DA N G E R

We’ve all heard the old saying: True beauty comes from within. Life choices like what we eat and how we act can have long-lasting effects—and nourishing the body, mind, and soul allows our inner beauty to flow outward. In these stressful times, how do we cultivate wellness that glows from the inside out? Here, we share five ways to let your inner beauty shine.

NUTRITION “If you want to radiate positivity and inner beauty, it starts with taking care of your physical body—and diet is a huge part of that,” says Jupiter-based nutritionist Rebecca Berman. The first step, she says, is to take the time to learn the basics about good nutrition: “Many people assume they eat healthy, but they really don’t. Develop a basic understanding of why it’s important to eat certain foods and avoid others.” Sticking to a healthy diet will keep your body functioning at an optimal level, says Berman. And, of course, when your body is functioning well, you tend to feel—and look—better. Palm Beach Gardens–based nutritionist Sandy Livingston advises gravitating toward deep colors like reds, yellows, blues, and dark greens—like berries, tomatoes, broccoli, oranges, and watermelon. “Foods with these deep colors are richest in vitamins, particularly A and C, which are antioxidants,” she says. “And other vitamins, like D, E, and K, are fat-soluble and transport fat in your body to give you shiny hair and supple skin.” Furthermore, foods that are in season will typically be the most flavorful. Overall, Livingston says the key with diet is your mindset: “Don’t focus on what you can’t eat; focus on what you need to eat more of.” While quarantining at home means less gym time for many, Livingston says it can also be an advantage in other ways. “Now is the perfect time to improve your diet,” she says. “We’re eating more meals at home and have more time to prepare them.” EXERCISE Hitting the gym (or yoga mat, bike, etc.) has an array of obvious physical benefits—like a six-pack and toned arms. But working out transforms your body in other ways too, like lowering blood pressure and increasing the production of antioxidants, says trainer Adam Davis, owner of CrossFit Sea Dog gym in Jupiter. When you build muscle, you’re also encouraging weight loss (not

54

to mention lowering your chances of developing Type 2 diabetes). Being active not only affects your entire body, but it impacts your mind and spirit as well—and feeling good about yourself is beautiful in itself. “Exercise increases serotonin levels in your brain the same way antidepressants do,” says Marybeth Hrim, a running coach and social worker in Jupiter. “It increases endorphins and decreases depression and anxiety.” If you’ve been a couch potato for a while now during quarantine, Hrim advises easing slowly back into working out. “If you try to run a mile right away [for example], you’ll be sore the next day and may decide not to do it again,” she says. Consistency is more important: “If you exercise at the same time each day, it becomes automatic.” THE GREAT OUTDOORS While seasonal affective disorder—a mood disorder caused by lack of exposure to natural light—is usually associated with northern climates, many South Floridians are staying inside more these days. But spending time outside in nature is another important path to well-being. “It makes you feel better to have the sun on your face and hear birds chirping,” says Rebecca Reid, education director at Busch Wildlife Sanctuary in Jupiter. “It’s freeing. You smile more. And the happier you are, the more you project happiness and beauty on the outside.” There’s even more to it than that. “Ecotherapy is an expanding area,” says Benji Studt, public outreach supervisor for the Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources, which manages several natural settings in the area. “There’s tons of research on the mental health benefits of being out in nature.” One study showed that a 90-minute walk in nature helped decrease activity in the part of the brain associated with depression. Another showed benefits similar to medication for individuals with ADHD. “When we feel better, we’re in a better mental space, and we generate more positivity, confidence,

JUPITER | S E P T E M B E R 2 0 2 0

052_BEAUTYWITHIN_0920.indd 54

8/5/20 8:32 AM

and competence,” notes Studt. “And we are naturally attracted to people who exude those qualities because they make us feel happy and confident.” While you’re outdoors, make sure you pay attention to your surroundings. “Take time to immerse yourself,” Studt says. “Look at the colors and petals of a flower, then make a conscious effort to unlock your other senses.” MINDFULNESS Practices like yoga and meditation can be important tools in achieving wellness. “We’re used to looking outside for joy and satisfaction, but yoga and meditation take you inside to explore your inner source and connect with yourself on a deeper level,” says Susan Wardle-Mitchell of Jupiter Bliss Yoga & Massage. “Working with your body and breath increases your prana [life force] and gives you strength, vitality, and zest for life—and that shines through on the outside,” she continues. “It also tones your muscles, gives you better balance, and makes you look younger.” Being more conscious of your body also affects how you treat your body. “Yoga gives you more strength and flexibility, helps you breathe better, improves your posture...” says Jen Suereth, owner of Zeal Yoga in Jupiter. “It makes you appreciate what your body can do, and when you appreciate your body, you start to make healthier decisions.” POSITIVE ATTITUDE Sure, it can be difficult to maintain a sunny outlook all the time. But exuding a positive attitude and simply being kind to others

illuminates inner beauty. “It may take extra energy, but it’s worth it to be good to those around you,” says Jupiter-based mental health counselor Dr. John Wirth. “Something as simple as holding a door for someone or giving a genuine smile can release endorphins [in you] and also make someone else’s day. You feel it inside, and it radiates outside. That gives you a glow.” Plus, maintaining a positive attitude can also help you sleep better—which is vital to health and beauty. “People who have anxiety and depression tend to have sleep problems and fatigue, which then causes them to move more slowly,” says Dr. Holly LaSalle-Ricci, a psychologist in Palm Beach Gardens. “Getting restful sleep creates more energy for the body, which means you can become more physically active, exercise, and grow muscle.” Practices like yoga and meditation can help keep you calm amid the chaos. But there other things you can do to help yourself as well—like trying to stay away from negativity in the first place. When it comes to the current news, for example, “stay informed, but limit your exposure,” advises Palm Beach Gardens–based psychologist Dr. Seth Leventhal. “It can make it seem like the world is coming to an end, and clearly it’s not.” It’s inevitable, of course, that we must face bits of bad news now and then. But again, mindset comes into play here. “Create new ways of thinking about facts that lead to anxiety and stress,” says LaSalle-Ricci. “Instead of saying, ‘I lost my job, my career is over, I’m a failure,’ look at areas of your life where you’re not failing. Instead of saying, ‘I should do this,’ say, ‘I’m going to try.’” In the end, if you do your best to approach each day in a positive, confident way, that is beautiful. ❖

Tina Veil has been creating kitchen designs throughout Florida, the Caribbean, and the United States for 40 years—30 of them with Signature Cabinetry & Design on U.S. Highway 1 in North Palm Beach. In addition, she specializes in space planning, specifically space planning that is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and kosher kitchens. “Trends and technology are always on the move, making continuous training imperative,” says Veil. She draws her inspiration from her clients. “Quite often, clients will ask for the same kitchen I designed for their friend or family member,” she says. “That is a compliment, but as the planning begins, it becomes all about their lifestyle and needs.” Veil tells her clients that with the colors and styles available today, it’s easy to create a beautiful look. Her goal is to use equal parts form and function to create a kitchen that is a smart workplace. “Trends in the area still lean toward the creams, whites, and soft coastal colors with transitional elements, but sleek contemporary also is back, highlighted by wood tones, whether natural or laminate,” add Veil. Signature Cabinetry & Design’s stellar showroom, which Veil arranged, is where her talented team is ready to meet with those wanting new construction or updating their kitchens and bathrooms as well as any other spaces needing cabinetry.

Cajun CRAVING ans of New Orleans’ signature Cajun and Creole dishes and Mardi Gras spirit don’t need to travel to Louisiana to get their fix. Located in downtown Palm Beach Gardens, Voodoo Bayou delivers an authentic take on the city’s cuisine—infused with a regional Southern touch and playful riffs—in a setting that captures the spirit of The Big Easy. Take a seat at the spacious outdoor patio reminiscent of a French Quarter café, in the dining room with purple velvet booths and cast-iron railings, or at the lantern-lit bar and start your adventure. Most will recognize plates like the shrimp and crawfish étouffée, oyster po’ boy, and jambalaya. However, classic dishes receive indulgent updates—such as shrimp and grits with the addition of smoked pork belly, crispy leeks, and a bacon bourbon

Cocktails like the frozen bourbon milk punch (similar to a vanilla milkshake but better) ameliorate Chef Peter Bartalini’s pillowy beignets—deep fried choux pastries doused in powder sugar. 11701 Lake Victoria Gardens Ave. Suite 5095, Palm Beach Gardens; voodoobayou.com; 561.888.6703 —Liz Petoniak

native cuisine and saw an opportunity. The Waxins began to assemble a team that included Swedish Chef Andreas Nordström, American-German Chef Björn Eicken, Sous Chef David Hagan, and restaurant industry veteran Richard Sandström, who brings a lifetime of experience to his role as co-founder and CEO. In June, Waxin’s finally opened its doors to the 3,800-squarefoot space comprised of a giant bar room with green velvet chairs, a casual TV-lined living room, a spacious chef’s room, and a “Stockholm room” with a private entrance for parties of up to 18 people. There’s also a lush garden patio with an outdoor bar, ideal for social distancing. The sleek and moody aesthetic permeates throughout the space and details, including matte black plates and bold lighting fixtures. Whimsical artwork— like a painting of John McEnroe and Björn Borg—furthers the Swedish-American theme. The unique menu highlights Swedish cuisine while also taking on American and global classics. “Sweden is without a doubt one of the top three culinary countries in the world,” says Waxin. “If MALIN SANDSTRÖM

he popularity of Chef René Redzepi’s Michelin-star Noma in Copenhagen brought Scandinavian cuisine into the spotlight with gourmands around the globe. For the most part, however, Americans are still more likely to conjure images of Ikea meatballs when they think of Swedish food. Waxin’s Restaurant & Bar, a new Swedish-American eatery in Palm Beach Gardens, is disarming that perception, one beautifully plated dish at a time. “I’ve been involved in restaurants before as part-owner, but I’ve never had my heart and passion into it like this one,” says Patrick Waxin, who moved to Florida from Sweden nine years ago with fellow founding partner and wife, Tessie, and their three children. The entrepreneurs missed their

you look at the biggest tournament for chefs, the Bocuse d’Or, I don’t think we’ve placed outside of the top three for the past five years.” Plates like toast Skagen (hand-peeled ice-ocean shrimp from Norway and Iceland on buttered fried toast) and Swedish-style caviar, which is only fished for four weeks out of the year, are alone worth making the trip to Waxin’s. Of course, you’ll also find meatballs with the traditional fixings—a demi cream sauce, pickled cucumber, lingonberries, and potato purée—as well as Wallenbergare, a double-ground veal steak that Waxin refers to as a “luxury meatball.” “The whole concept of our food is very simplistic,” says Sandström. “For us, it’s about flavors and presentation and how you turn those raw materials into a product that has a lot of thought behind it.” The whole team played a role in developing recipes; diners may notice dishes with names like Patrick’s risotto and Tessie’s bouillabaisse, each with its own story. The cocktail program embraces that same sense of simplicity with drinks such as the signature elderflower spritz (gin, elderflower liqueur, cucumber, and prosecco). The presentation, like libations served in an Instagram-worthy rose gold gnome vessel, sets a playful tone. And definitely save room for dessert: Try the strawberry puff, similar to a pâte à choux or profiterole topped with strawberries and dill. The restaurant also plans to launch a plant-based menu in the future, with 8 to 10 items comprising vegan or vegetarian versions of their classic dishes. hen nature gives you invasive species, eat them—particularly when they’re as delicious as lionfish. That’s the philosophy of Kenny Gibbs, who opened Firefin Grill last November in the Palm Beach Gardens space formerly occupied by Carmine’s Ocean Grill. “They’re tasty and good for you,” says Gibbs, who founded The Twisted Tuna in Stuart in 2014. At Firefin, lionfish is available as an appetizer (marinated in ceviche or fried and served with tartar sauce) or as an entrée (blackened or sautéed). The comprehensive menu also offers steaks,Hani burgers, Honeysushi, creates a products. and a wide range of sustainably sourced seafood.variety There’sof ahoney seasonally changing list of craft cocktails, and the restaurant features live music Thursday through Sunday and offers a gorgeous view of the Soverel Harbour Marina. Although the explosion in the lionfish population is generally attributed to Hurricane Andrew in 1992, the fish have been native to Florida waters since the 1980s. Without any natural predators, they can easily endanger the rest of the marine population and create a permanent imbalance in local reefs—another reason Gibbs is fond of cooking them up. “My family are divers Charcuterie board and fishermen, and we’re particularly concerned about protecting the marine environment,” he says. 2401 PGA Blvd. Suite 160, Palm Beach Gardens; firefingrill.com; 561.472.7900 —Mark Spivak
