Expert Q&A

Q: A:

What is the hottest new trend in residential lighting?

LED light panels are a revolutionary new product created to beautifully and evenly illuminate semi-precious/translucent stone surfaces. They are custom-fabricated, LED-imbedded, acrylic panels designed to be placed underneath the stone which can be used for islands, backsplashes, floors, walls, and even stairwells. If you are planning to use translucent stone in your project, you are most likely spending many thousands of dollars on the materials alone. With an investment like this, it is crucial that the lighting system you select will not fail prematurely over time. Consumers need to be aware that there are many inferior products available on the market which have attempted to imitate the original LED light panel patents, but ultimately have several technical limitations. This has been an amazing advancement in technology for lighting designers, as it allows for the use of light as a dynamic focal point, incorporating excitingly unique elements into otherwise functional spaces.

Q: A:

Why is it important to consult with a professional lighting designer when replacing or putting new lighting in your home?

Residential lighting is currently in the midst of an LED technology revolution, and it is important to understand the way that these changes can affect your home and your lifestyle. So many factors— lumen output, color temperature, color rendering, sizing, placement, automation/integration, the final expense—should all be carefully reflected upon when selecting new lighting. Additionally, knowledge of current safety and building codes can be essential. There is also a wide variety of innovative new technical lighting products available, which when properly incorporated into your project can take an ordinary space, and make it feel extraordinary. A professional lighting designer takes all of these important factors into consideration, as well as assists with the various decorative decisions, so that you are thrilled with your investment for many years to come. Known as “The Light Lady” since 1984, Lynne Stambouly is senior lighting designer at Lighting First’s Specialty Lighting Division in Southwest Florida. Her background includes owning her own lighting showroom, being the “go-to” lighting designer for the largest interior design firms in Southwest Florida and serving as president of the Naples chapter of the Interior Design Society.

It’s not always easy fitting a new home into an existing development … especially one originating in the 1980s. But with dramatic yet transitional lines, architect John Cooney makes this model feel at home in Pelican Bay.

elican Bay, a sprawling Naples amalgam of single-family homes, condominiums, high-rises, and spectacular beachfront has transitioned from its heyday in the 1980s to become one of today’s most

sought-after addresses. And the development company, Calusa Bay, has stepped into the moment with a star-studded team that reads like a Who’s-Who list in the Naples luxury real estate market: developer Leslie Sherman, Calusa Bay Development; architect John Cooney, Stofft Cooney Architects; general contractor Matt Knauf, Knauf Koenig Group; and designer Randi Scott, Calusa Bay Design.

Working hand in hand, Cooney and the team decided this 5,100-square-foot Pelican Bay home should be both contemporary and rustic, with soaring rooflines, floor-to-ceiling windows and an open concept interior. “Our design goal is always to stay ahead of the curve, to create timeless and exciting spaces for our clients,” Cooney says. “This home achieved that goal with a fresh eclectic style, reminiscent of a Southern California rustic contemporary bungalow.” Stained cypress corbels and shell stone accents marry perfectly with the home’s more contemporary mahogany and glass double entry doors. It only gets better inside, where the beams, trays and spectacular 24-foot-high vaults result in a soaring one-story home with an open fl oor plan that allows the great room to expand into the kitchen, breakfast and dining areas, and a lanai that seems to insist it be a part of the house. The ceilings give functional cues, distinguishing main living areas with tongue-and-groove cypress and rustic beams. “We spend a lot of time and effort figuring out the best methods and finishes for our millwork and ceiling element,” Knauf says. “When you look at this home, that effort has clearly paid off.” Calusa Bay’s Randi Scott led the interior design team in its selections of classic contemporary, functional and easily personalized components that make for universal appeal throughout the home. “Our goal is to create an eclectic, engaging space that is stunning and welcoming, and a little bit edgy,” Scott says. “We prefer to select really good quality main pieces in neutral tones as our base. We can then adjust the interior to refl ect the new owner’s taste by simply modifying accent colors or accessories.”

“THIS HOME DEVELOPED WELL WITH AN OPEN CONCEPT PLAN THAT LIVES INSIDE AND OUT,” DEVELOPER AND DESIGNER LESLIE SHERMAN SAYS. “THIS TEAM PRIDES ITSELF ON DELIVERING A TIMELESS AND YET FRESH, CREATIVE STYLE.”

In the great room, a custom, lighted feature wall perfectly accents the open concept living space. Here, a large wool and silk rug begins the play of textures that will dance throughout the home. A wall of folding glass separating the great room and outdoor living spaces opens graciously to one side, combining the living area and lanai to create a fabulous indoor/ outdoor space. Screens drop down to enclose the lanai and its tile-faced fireplace and open-air dining space. With the kitchen steps from the great room, only a slight shift is needed to draw culinary specialists into any party. A corner banquette — one of Calusa Bay Design’s signature elements — makes breakfast a delight over which to linger. Light abounds in the elegant, double-transom dining room. Kelly Wearstler’s confection of brass and white-glass cone shades suspends from the 18-foot-high ceiling. Calusa Bay Design created the slate-finished linear-cut oak and brass table, and the stylish chairs with their own polished brass ferrules. The geometry of the custom-designed sideboard is repeated in the chair’s Italian fabric. Scott continues the monochrome palette in the master suite, where architectural form and function combine to create a sense of elegance. The vaulted beams of the ceiling cache ventilation design, while transom windows add a distinctive touch — not to mention a little more natural light. It’s just one more element that makes this home a stand out in the North Naples community of Pelican Bay.

ABOVE: In one of two complete baths for the master suite, Calusa Bay Design’s cabinetry

lines the wall; garden views provide a picturesque backdrop for a freestanding tub by Kohler; and shells reef from Stoneline Group swirls across the floor with a pearly sheen.

It’s basically the first, last and every rule in between of real estate. Location.

And this stunning new home at 489 1st Ave. in Olde Naples, follows those rules beautifully.

Located just four blocks from the beach and from the shops and restaurants of

5th Avenue South, it places you squarely in the center of the ideal Naples lifestyle. “It’s difficult to imagine a better spot to experience the best of Naples,” says concierge broker Dante DiSabato of William Raveis Real Estate, who not only lists the property, but was also part of the development team who created it. “You can walk to the beach each evening for sunsets, stroll to Fifth Avenue South to grab a bite to eat or do some shopping, then come back to this amazing home and do it all over again. This property is a testament to a life well-lived.” Encore Development, led by Mark DiSabato and Rick Armalavage, brought together T. Jerulle Construction, MHK Architecture and ALD Landscape

Architecture to create this gorgeous four bedroom, three full- and one half-bath home designed around a great room concept, which opens onto a resort-style pool area with western exposure. To call it perfect might be selling it short. nterior designer Kira Krümm has been at the forefront of modern interior design for more than two decades. Establishing her firm in Naples in the early 2000’s, Krümm quickly developed a solid reputation for creating award-

winning lifestyle environments that are both inspiring and timeless. For the past decade, Krümm has been designing from her headquarters in Southwest Florida’s Premier Design Center, but in 2017 the designer decided to bring her firm, Koastal Design Group – Kira Krümm & Co, “back home” to Naples with a beautiful new studio nestled in the heart of downtown Naples — blocks from City Dock in Crayton Cove. “We love that our studio is near the homes we design and we are back in the heart of Naples,” Krümm says.

PATINA COLLECTION

P

Patina Collection hosted famed Italian jewelry designers Roberto Faraone Mennella and Amedeo Scognamiglio of Faraone Mennella and AMEDEO. A private Preview of their collection followed by a 2-day trunk show was enjoyed by many. Faraone Mennella generously donated 3 of their own pieces for a silent auction during the Preview event. All proceeds from the auction and 10% of sales from the trunk show benefited The Shelter for Abused Women & Children totalling over a $6,950 contribution. The 3 day event offered Southwest Florida the unique opportunity to not only shop the stunning jewelry collections, but also to experience the Patina Collection lifestyle. Patina Collection’s aesthetic grounds itself in a diffused and natural palette consisting of curated furnishings and complemented by lifestyle-driven collections furthering the concept of the Patina culture, not simply a furniture store. ooks can be deceiving. Such is the case with this beach cottage-inspired entry porch that leads into a 5,234-square-foot luxury coastal home. “We wanted to create a charming New England-style

beach house appeal from the curbside,” says designer Melissa Raucci of the turnkey house located in the heart of Olde Naples a few blocks off the Gulf of Mexico. ABOVE:

Cement and stucco clapboard, along with shingle details plus a custom-beam design in the eaves, set the

“THE INTERIOR DESIGN IS UNIQUELY INSPIRED BY THE COASTAL LOCATION. THE HOME ITSELF EXUDES ITS OWN CHARACTER AND ENERGY,“ DESIGNER MELISSA RAUCCI SAYS. “IT SPOKE TO ME AS WANTING TO BE AN ETHEREAL, PEACEFUL SPACE ... SOMETHING CLASSIC AND TIMELESS, YET CASUAL, ALL AT THE SAME TIME.”

Designed to withstand extreme coastal conditions, the home stands proud with full concrete construction, stucco clapboard and shingle detailing. Even the beach shutters are of white powder-coated aluminum. The glass-paned, custom mahogany front door, with its transom window, offers the first hint of the scope and sophistication inside. “Upon entry, you quickly realize the size, scale and mass of the home, which stretches from one end of the lot line to the other, and culminates in an L-shape surrounding a large patio and swimming pool,” Raucci says. The home’s main level is an open floor plan with a subtle, neutral envelope, layered with timeless architectural details such as wide-plank white oak flooring and Calcutta marble. “The overall palette mimics the sandy feel of the beach,” the designer says. “It’s all warm skies, ocean air and organic driftwood.” Effortless living is ever-present in the main social areas, where deep-seated sofas and linen slipcovered, Malibu-style armchairs form a conversation grouping. Intended for lounging, the easy-to-maintain furnishings are set about a large cocktail table wrapped in coastalinspired natural sea grass to add a layer of texture.

“OUR HOMES COMBINE FORM AND FUNCTION IN A HARMONIOUS WAY,” RAUCCI SAYS. “EACH RADIATES ITS OWN PERSONALITY AND IS TRANSFORMED INTO A LAID-BACK ESCAPE.”

This “beachy-chic” theme flows through to the adjacent kitchen lined with crisp, streamlined custom wood cabinetry topped in quartz stone. A custom stainless steel hood, with polished nickel straps and rivets, is both modern and timeless set against a marble herringbone backsplash. The statement piece here, however, is the thick, waterfall-edged Calcutta gold marble island. Polished nickel accents continue in the dining area, where a wet bar boasts its own distinct design with stained dove-gray and onyx-glazed cabinetry, open-glass shelving and a Sub-Zero wine refrigerator. “We also gave it a small galley sink to use as a place to scoop ice for a party or simply rinse a wine glass,” Raucci says. The dining table, surrounded by white barreled, Belgian linen slipcovered chairs, showcases an unpredictable, handmade statement piece on polished steel legs and connects to the coastal feel. The top is of cerused oak with an inset, holding large beach shells encased beneath a glass top. ABOVE:

A lively marble herringbone pattern plays on the backsplash of this coastal kitchen shaped with

Soho Kitchens and Design’s streamlined custom cabinetry. Calcutta Gold from Rain Forest Marble forms the breakfast bar, where Serena & Lily’s striking, white woven wicker pendants glow above the marble waterfall-edged island lined with inviting iron-and-oak Farmhouse Tractor swivel-seat stools.

in the master bedroom, where a king-sized bed anchors the space and a soft, sexy glow emanates from Oly Studio’s “Klemm” chandelier. An abstract art piece, Tides Edge, continues the coastal theme.

A relaxing aura with a hint of sexiness wraps the master suite. The master bath’s soaking tub atop reflective white, Thassos porcelain flooring shapes a spa-like setting, where a hand-cut crystal chandelier is pure decadence. In the bedroom, over-sized bedside tables in a soft silhouette pair with a sumptuous upholstered bed. At its foot, ottomans in watercolor tones tie the decor to the pool outside. Stepping onto the loggia, a porcelain tile fireplace in a bleached wood finish warms the open-air social spaces. “It’s glassed-in and see-through, so the alfresco feel is captured from all angles,” the designer says.

Meanwhile, Syrian shell-stone flooring travels seamlessly out to the pool, offering texture and that beach-sand feel. The pool itself is lined with an iridescent glass water tile edge, adding a tropical flair for guests to enjoy while sunning in ledge loungers or relaxing in the spa. “When the homeowners host a party, they can open up the whole house surrounding the pool,” Raucci says. “This maximizes its overall entertainment value, while creating separate vignettes for more intimate conversations.”

nterior designer Wendy Berry imagined a cool Malibu Beach, Calif., residence when she

designed this Kalea Bay model condominium in Naples, Fla., a 2017 winner of the prestigious Sand Dollar Award. Since most of the rooms overlook the Gulf of Mexico, she wanted to create airy, crisp interiors using a mix of cream and white tones, warm woods and metals. “This is my ‘Malibu Model,’ which I designed with an uncluttered monochromatic palette so it would not distract from the views,” Berry says. “Since this is a spec home, I created something that would appeal to everyone — clean design and a transitional look that is not totally modern.” Although the 4,000-square-foot unit is on a low floor in a 22-story building, views of the sparkling Gulf through large floor-to-ceiling

windows are still fantastic, and Berry planned to take full advantage. In fact, the feeling of being at the beach is so prevalent throughout the open living areas that the shifts and changes in the flow of the waters can provide hours of tranquility. The spacious living area resembles a grand salon. In the center of the room, a custom, light-colored sofa in a cotton linen blend and a custom chaise in soft cotton, both by W Design, are placed parallel to the kitchen island to create a luxurious social area that flows naturally. A round iron occasional table with a marble top and wood-based barstools in the kitchen represent Berry’s love for complementary metals and wood.

THE SPACIOUS LIVING AREA, PERFECT FOR LARGE OR SMALL GATHERINGS, IS A LUXURIOUS SPACE THAT IS ALSO WARM AND COZY. “I LIKE TO USE MIXED METALS LIKE POLISHED NICKEL, BRASS AND IRON WHICH WORK WELL WITH WARM AND DARK WOOD,” INTERIOR DESIGNER WENDY BERRY SAYS.

A custom-designed wine cabinet placed at one end of the living area is created with wood cabinetry on either side, and illuminated above with LED lighting. “This stunning wine cabinet is the first thing you see when walking off the private elevator,” Berry says. “It is an important feature of the living space.” From a corner window in the dining area and kitchen, the water theme continues with majestic views. A hand-painted ceramic tile backsplash in the kitchen lends a wavy appearance in a seaside blue hue. Separated by the breakfast island, an organic wood dining table framed with linen-clad chairs from Hooker created in a light beachy wood, blends well with the white, gray and blue shades in Slated, abstract artwork by Carol Benson Cobb from John-Richard. In the tranquil master bedroom, cool blue color from the sea and sky are echoed in the pillows and draperies, and the soft washed

cotton armchairs in the sitting area. Berry warmed the room with a custom bed upholstered in a beige tone and gold trim that encircles an oblong ottoman. A custom credenza in a sandy hue adds texture to the space. “Inside and out had to work together,” the designer says. Similarly, the luxurious and light master bath is a serene, spa-inspired space complete with a soaking tub and bright white Shaker cabinetry topped with a charcoal Grigio Nube quartz counter to add contrast. Overlooking the garden through large floor-to-ceiling windows, an airy den is arranged with plush neutral chaise lounges. Four framed works of American Indian art on a wall flank a round iron mirror mounted above a custom console with a high gloss finish. The room, which Berry named the “Seminole Den,” pays homage to the Seminole Indians who settled in Collier County. “I wanted the den’s look to be indigenous to where the residence is located geographically,” she says. “I also like giving a room a quirky and unexpected twist.” Berry designs each model apartment differently, and this one, created with a seaside Malibu vibe, was extremely rewarding. “I love this place,” she says. “It is so fulfilling to see our vision come to life.”

his unique Naples home in the affluent neighborhood of Aqualane Shores is just steps from the beach and walking distance to shops and restaurants.

“The home has two of everything,” architect John Cooney says. The spectacular 6,500-square-foot residence offers two master suites, two pools, two outdoor living areas and wonderful views from the front and rear. “It’s been ‘amenitized’ in every possible way,” the architect says. The home’s two gardens are enchanting with its enclosed front courtyard and casita, dramatic pool and cascading waterfall. And to capture the views, the two-story home is punctuated with floor-to-ceiling windows and doors that open to expansive balconies.

In the front courtyard, two pools provide focal points along with a stepped waterfall and a fanciful casita. On the terrace by the entry, a grouping of four twisted-rope chairs framed in teak by Palecek provide a tranquil conversation space.

Near the stairway, the wine room is behind custom-made textured waved

glass, and a cascading light in stone-shaped blown glass by Fine Art Lamps hangs from cables of varying lengths, adding another sculptural element.

“The house is a West Indies style, but it has a transitional feel with contemporary flair,” Cooney says. “We accomplished that by leaving off typical West Indies details such as corbels, brackets and shutters.” The two outdoor areas also solved a site problem. Creating a large front courtyard with a smaller patio area at the rear of the house was the perfect solution for this pie-shaped property with northern exposure. Dramatic sophisticated elements imbue the interiors as well. The sculptural stairway, an interior focal point, was created by Cooney and interior designer Lisa Ficarra. “I wanted a dramatic entrance with a stairway that appeared to be floating,” Ficarra says. With panels of glass framed in stainless steel, the treads

and handrails are constructed of Sapele mahogany in an espresso finish. The flooring, custom designed by Ficarra, features insets of silver-vein travertine framed in Legno Bastone, taupe-toned oak planking. As with the architecture, the interior design mixes textures, materials and styles. “I don’t have one distinctive style when I am designing homes,” Ficarra says. “I like to push myself to create something that can’t be labeled.” In the living room, serenity and elegance go hand-in-hand with furnishings that evoke Mid-century modern and contemporary using woods and finishes. The seating area is arranged with a Hickory Chair sofa upholstered in off-white linen, two Kravet lounge chairs covered in a blue-and-gray

velvet chenille and a bronzed-geometric iron bench with a faux-fur seat by Kelly Wearstler for EJ Victor. These are grouped around a custom mahogany cocktail table designed by Ficarra. “There are lots of textures in this space and mixing them together creates interest for the eye,” the designer says. In the dining area, a Theodore Alexander dining table custom-finished in a silver wash is edged by Adriana Hoyos ebony wood chairs upholstered in a silver, blue and taupe textured fabric. “Ribbon,” a bronzed metal and blown-glass LED light suspends over the table by cables.

“The adjoining kitchen was the brainstorm of designer Bob Ostrowski, owner of AlliKriste,” Ficarra says. “He wanted to design something that didn’t look like a kitchen, so it’s design is very unconventional with large cabinet doors and glass barn doors set on a track.” The master bath, fashioned with a freestanding tub, is also a unique space that offers tranquil bay views. “For the casita, I wanted to design something with a more casual feel. As a guest house, I wanted it to be more fun and coastal with brighter colors,” Ficarra says. The casita’s master bedroom features a

A Vanguard platform bed is upholstered in off-white textured linen. Behind the bed, an accent wall covered in a Jeffrey Michaels grasscloth in gray, turquoise and off-white adds texture. Nearby, two chairs in lacquered-white textured leather with metal frames are arranged around a branch table by Palecek to create a cozy breakfast area. Outdoors, a plunge pool steps down to a patio with an expansive modular sofa in espresso woven wicker accented with white-linen cushions. “I attended an event here recently,” Ficarra says. “The guests enjoyed the outdoor area with views of the bay, hot tub and firepit as much as they enjoyed the interior.”

ome people want their designers to create show places, but for interior designers Faith Fix and Alex Thies, their mission is to design for real people who want a

comfortable place to live. “But it just so happens that our designs are also very beautiful,” Fix says. When their clients came to Bonita Springs looking for a vacation home to enjoy with their grown children and grandchildren, they were fortunate enough to view this “playful” contemporary house on Bonita Beach that Thies had designed for the original homeowners. They fell in love with it and made the owners an offer they could not refuse.

“I wanted people to say ‘wow’ from the minute they saw this house,” interior designer Alex Thies

says. From the frosted-glass garage doors to the curved elements juxtaposed with cool linear lines, to the natural wood and stone accents, this home is a stunning creation.

“I TRIED TO PUSH THE BOUNDARIES OF WHAT WAS BEING DONE IN THE AREA BY CREATING A CONTEMPORARY AND CURRENT HOUSE WITHOUT BEING TRENDY. BUT AT THE SAME TIME, I WANTED IT TO BE LIVABLE AND COMFORTABLE FOR MY CLIENTS,” INTERIOR DESIGNER ALEX THIES SAYS.

The couple, who live most of the year in a very traditional house, were hesitant about going contemporary. But after being introduced to the home’s warm interiors, they were tempted. And when their grown children told them contemporary was a “fun” change and “the way to go,” they were sold, furnishings and all. Just a glimpse from the street is enough to understand the appeal of this spectacular 5,000-square-foot home set on the Gulf of Mexico. “The exterior stands out from its neighbors but not like a sore thumb,” says Thies, who wanted to do something a little different from the usual cottage-style beach home. She credits this contemporary home’s success to residential designer Richard Guzman’s choice of curved accents, as well as the selection of natural colors and materials that are rarely seen in the area’s home designs. The use of wood as a warm natural element throughout begins at the home’s entry with a clear-coated mahogany front door. “I originally was going to stain it but when I saw it unfinished, I thought it was perfect and beautiful as it was,” Thies says. Rich walnut flooring from Real Wood Floors can be admired while ascending the waterfall

“I THINK THIS HOUSE REALLY SPEAKS TO THE APPRECIATION OF NATURAL MATERIALS IN THEIR NATURAL STATE. AT THE SAME TIME, I WAS CAREFUL THAT THEY WOULDN’T BE TOO HEAVY — I WANTED IT TO STILL FEEL LIKE A BEACH HOME,” THIES SAYS.

stairway. Thies prizes it for its graining and imperfections. “It’s a bit of a surprise because most beachfront owners prefer a lighter flooring treatment,” she says. A stairway leads to the living area, where walnut veneer on custom built-in shelving and storage drawers edge a wall. A sofa by Century Furniture clad in Clarke & Clarke fabric and Mid-century modern, rattan-framed armchairs form a social grouping around a square cocktail with a painted

wood top. Linear stacked stone, also used on the exterior of the home, can be seen on the wall of the wet bar lined with barstools from Vanguard. For this open plan, Thies created simple but innovative ceiling treatments to help define the great room’s living, dining and kitchen areas which have splendid views of the Gulf of Mexico. “The ceiling is another layer of the house that shouldn’t be ignored. You can have a lot of fun and use creativity there,” she says. Early on, Thies knew she wanted to find a live-edge table for the dining room that would provide an organic contemporary silhouette. “With so many linear lines, it’s nice to have that

juxtaposition of straight lines and natural forms,” she says. She selected a Chamcha wood table and surrounded it with linear dining chairs featuring polished stainless steel legs. Mixing and matching metals throughout the home adds another layer of interest. Because the original owners wanted an all-white kitchen, Thies was concerned it would feel too cold. To warm things up, she added walnut veneer legs to support the exotic quartzite top on the oversized island as well as on the custom cabinetry. A subway tile backsplash with contrasting grout adds texture to the sleek space. To take advantage of spectacular Gulf views in the master bedroom, Thies arranged the furnishings to lend the feel of being on a cruise ship. Bedside tables from the Robert James Collection flank a

ith its lush landscapes and stately properties linked by a series of waterways, the Moorings continues to be one of the most highly sought after neighborhoods in

Naples. The interior design team of Laura Parsons and Liz Brown created the interiors for this spectacular 6,500-square-foot, British West Indies-style home built by J.S. Coleman. “We loved that the owners knew exactly what they wanted and were thoroughly engaged in the design process,” Parsons says. In the market for a complete change, the semi-retired couple brought nothing with them from their former residence, a condominium imbued with heavy Mediterranean decor. They ABOVE:

were seeking clean, contemporary interiors to fill their airy new home. Among the elements Parsons and Brown incorporated into the design were original paintings acquired from the Gardner Colby Gallery in Naples. “Pairing art with interiors is one of our signature styles — we like to do this when the client is open to it,” Parsons says. The foyer leads to the elegant great room, where the design team struck a balance between high-end, functional furnishings and a contemporary clean look. An A. Rudin sectional sofa covered in Romo fabric, surrounds a pearlescent wood cocktail table topped with a frosted glass insert from Bradley Furniture. Setting the tone, a wool-and-silk area rug from Designer’s Rug Center is likened to a work of art. “It’s very abstract and soft to the touch,” Parsons says. The inside extends outdoors as Harlequin draperies frame views of the sparkling pool and lushly landscaped grounds. The pristine blue-and-white kitchen conveys a seaside motif. The design team selected Charles Stewart’s counter stools

to add a splash of coastal blue. Covered in lustrous Edelman leather, they are perfect for elegant yet informal dining around the marble-topped breakfast island. The adjacent dining room overlooks the loggia and pool, which adds reflective blue tints to an otherwise monochromatic palette. An oval, pedestal-based Julian Chichester dining table is crafted from European oak. “Because the space is so linear, the elliptical shape of the table softens the space,” Parsons says. Surrounding the table are Jessica Charles dining chairs that feature Mid-century modern lines complemented by upholstery in a retro bouclé fabric from Mark Alexander. White, marble-veined shower walls spill seamlessly into marble flooring in the elegant master bath. A large picture window overlooks the inviting tub and ensures privacy with its lush foliage. Just steps into the tranquil master bedroom, a custom headboard and footboard, clad in a Romo textile, is flanked by Barbara Barry’s cherry box-on-chest bedside tables. Donghia’s hand-painted, batik print fabric in lavender and gray tones drape French doors that lead out to the pool area. “The draperies keep the palette tranquil and muted,” Brown says. The room’s finishing touch is artist Doug Foltz’s linen

The couple loves to slip outdoors for a morning dip in the pool or relax in the spacious loggia outfitted with wicker armchairs, and a sectional sofa enhanced with scattered Hodsoll McKenzie and Romo accent pillows. By engaging in every decision along the way, the owners’ flexible approach to design contributed to a smoothly run project. “They were open to a young aesthetic … which made for a fun rewarding project,” Brown says.

hen a house is marked by the nuances and affections of a homeowner threaded throughout, it very much becomes a home — a functional piece of art. That’s exactly how it should be. This over

5,000-square-foot home in Naples is all about the family that lives in it, from the vast art collection sourced from El Salvador to the open, comfortable living room. Previously a 1960s Florida bungalow, the newly renovated home sits on a generous lot full of lush foliage that complements the interiors. “We employed what we call tropical modern — clean, and spare but with the richness of woods and other materials such as textiles that cushion the rooms,” interior designer Jenny Provost says.

“THIS HOME IS A LITTLE ATYPICAL FOR WHAT IS AVAILABLE IN THE NAPLES AREA BECAUSE USUALLY THEY’RE PICTURE PERFECT HOUSES THAT ARE NOT LIVED IN LIKE THIS. IT IS A VERY KID-FRIENDLY, FAMILY-ORIENTED HOUSE,” INTERIOR DESIGNER JENNY PROVOST SAYS.

At the entry, a hallway barrels straight in front, while an intersecting corridor interrupts. Mahogany beams shorten the hallway, which stop the eye from ricocheting down the space. It’s a welcomed interlude, and as the wooden arches repeat, they create a gallery-like feel for the artwork that complements this tropical modern oasis. Outside, a large deck outlines the massive pool — symmetrically designed. The deck is outfitted with purposefully positioned plantings to allow green to play a significant role. Just beyond, the cabana area is warm and inviting. Inside, the living room follows suit with a warmth every family would want — luxurious yet comfortable. Two geranium-colored armchairs and a light beige sectional border Palacek’s travertine-topped, driftwood cocktail table. A pair of Thayer Coggin ottomans edge out the space. Sturdy enough to act as benches, but also ideal for putting your feet up, they bridge the gap between luxury and functionality. The

“Rich warm gold, deep brown and red tones that

you get from the tropical hardwoods start us on our color language throughout the house,” Provost says. “So we’re using complementary colors and associative colors like the orange-red in the living room.”

The Turkish limestone paver flooring in the cabana is slightly porous but still retains a smooth quality, an ideal balance for comfort and safety, especially necessary for the little wet feet that will be running across it.

“IN ORDER FOR ANY DESIGNER TO DO SOMETHING THAT IS SPECTACULAR IT REQUIRES THAT THE CLIENTS ARE INTERESTED AND INVOLVED. I CAN CERTAINLY SAY THAT’S TRUE OF THESE PEOPLE,” PROVOST SAYS. 244 FLORIDA DESIGN’S NAPLES EDITION 2-2

flooring, also present in the elegant entryway, is crema mocha limestone flooring. Provost designed the outdoor cabana to be used all year round. Two large wooden doors stand as sentinels just beyond the teak dining room table and chairs from K2 Design. “The space is light and bright, and a little less weighty than you might want,” Provost says. “The doors give it a richness and a character that you could only achieve by using something as vintage as these doors.” The master bedroom is, in a word, luxurious. Provost intended it as a lavish resort-style room. Taupe and gold colors that adorn the bed coverings and draperies take its cues from the outdoors. “There’s one thing about Florida landscapes that people forget — it has a lot of yellow in it,” Provost says. The master bath is a delicately fine-tuned escape with a pleasing color scheme of sea foam green. In this room, Provost repeated the same Portuguese limestone flooring with the same mahogany-trimmed baseboards as in the

In the cabana’s dining area, a teak table and chairs provide a place of casual comfort when the family and their guests dine. The owners wanted the pieces to retain a weathered, aged look, zoning in on character and drastically limiting future maintenance.

living room. “I wanted it to be fresh and bright, so for the countertops I used a pure white solid surface and then on the cabinets themselves I used a gloss white lacquer, the designer says. The cabinets are framed in a chrome-plated trim that is reminiscent of the metal frames that go under steamer trunks to protect them. This home weaves a tropical theme, interspersed with purpose: functionality for family gatherings, a color palette supportive of a carefully curated art collection and relaxed spaces that celebrate Florida’s landscape.

mbracing the soothing elements of sand and sea, with bleached woods and touches

of greige and pale blue edged with foamy white, interior designer Renée Gaddis added an undercurrent of French sophistication to a condo at Seaglass. A new high-rise tower on Bonita Bay developed by The Ronto Group, Seaglass offers water views on higher levels, and for the lower levels, sweeping vistas of the horizon where mangroves meet the sky. Though nature inspired Gaddis’ vision, when she was given free rein to customize the 4,000-square-foot model she went beyond the view. “This condominium has a sophisticated touch to satisfy a well-traveled owner,” she says. “For many residents here, these are their second or third homes, and while they do want a Florida feel, that doesn’t mean it has to be a tropical Florida coastal home.” This sensibility permeates throughout, with rift-cut oak flooring, a neutral color palette, and an eclectic mix of sophisticated yet comfortable furnishings and fabrics. “In the living room, I designed three seating areas so that guests can do multiple things at the same time,” Gaddis says. “There’s a little desk for computer fun tucked in one corner and a card table in the other.”

Framed French provincial scenes, candles on

crystal stands, and books covered in white paper accessorize the living area. Theodore Alexander armchairs with whitewashed wood legs pair with a sofa and lounge chairs covered in a sandy hued linen. Baker’s polished mahogany cocktail table by French designer Jacques Garcia adds the perfect contrast.

TO ACCOMMODATE THE CASUAL LIFESTYLE SO POPULAR WITH FLORIDA’S SEASIDE LIVING, THE DESIGNER DID AWAY WITH THE CONDOMINIUM’S STANDARD BREAKFAST AREA, CREATING ONE LARGE GREAT ROOM WITH A DINING AREA CENTRAL TO THE LIVING AREA AND KITCHEN.

With a nod to sand and sky, a warm greige hue envelops the main social areas. A crowned coffered ceiling delineates the living area, while windows and glass sliders draped in an open-weave linen flow through to the dining area. Here, materials mix for contrast and layering. The walnut pedestal table easily seats eight in dining chairs luxuriously clad in pale French-blue velvet. An eight-light halo of organically formed brass branches dripping with hand-blown glass teardrops draws the eye up and around the space. Veering away from Seaglass’ standard configuration, Gaddis chose a freestanding washed-oak working island for the kitchen. The cabinetry is painted a French gray-blue; countertops are quartz; appliances are stainless; and the sand-colored ceramic backsplash

is set in a fish-scale pattern. Gaddis made other subtle changes, too. “I didn’t want the standard stainless hood. I thought it would be nicer to have a drywall hood that has a nice curved feel to it,” she says. Beyond, mirrored barn doors slide open to reveal a black rubbed-oak contemporary screen that leads the way to more private spaces. The master bedroom expresses serenity with a Parisian touch that is fresh and eclectic. “The ceilings are high, so I wanted a high tufted-velvet headboard and I love the light creamy velvet against the blue walls,” the designer says. The bed is dressed in white Matouk linen with blue embroidery; stacked disk table lamps lend a unique papier-mâché feel; and a pair of Klismos chanelled-back chairs with tapered maple wood legs shape a petite sitting area. To be in harmony with nature, while adding a Parisian sensibility demands a mastery of the eclectic style. “It’s all about balance,” Gaddis says. “When you mix the woods with that ‘little bit of French,’ you have to counterbalance elements.” Et voila! Soft seaside chic embraces French sophistication.

couple craving their privacy was spellbound by the quaintness of this affluent Indian River Shores community in Florida. Bridging causeways connecting gated communities

Noted architect Harry Gandy Howle designed this 7,400-square-foot residence built by David Lyons with a stately exterior facade that is revealed in rafter tails and detailed columns surrounding the entrance.

“IN AN AREA THAT HAS SO MUCH NATURAL BEAUTY, I TRY TO KEEP A FAIRLY MONOCHROMATIC COLOR SCHEME WHICH IS MORE ABOUT TEXTURE AND SUBTLE EFFECTS THAT ARE RICH IN DETAIL,” DESIGNER BETHANY O’NEIL SAYS.

The use of columns resurfaces inside the home, where designer Bethany O’Neil blends Old World sensibilities with bespoke, artisan-crafted pieces and imported Swedish antiques in a sandy white palette. Her clients were seeking elegant but casual interiors for their first home in Florida. The subtle palette is O’Neil’s trademark aesthetic. “That is my look,” she says. “Most of the projects I work on are on the water, or with a water view — so, that also determines my color scheme.” To begin, the designer sought placements for focal pieces. “I always start with the fabrics, followed by the floor plan, furnishings and finally finishes that are mindful of the original color scheme,” she says. In the dining room, the distressed patina of an elegant Tritter Feefer dining table edged by David Iatesta Studio chairs clad in a Duralee pinstripe fabric lends a timeless quality that is mirrored in an area rug from Abbey Carpet. “To me the rugs are not just an afterthought — they are

essential — I just don’t want them to control the design,” O’Neil says. The timeless quality continues in a charming vignette featuring an antique-style mirror above a French country console layered with Visual Comfort’s table lamps. On view through large columns is the heart of the home — the gracious great room, where the dining and living areas are connected by an expanse of European oak flooring. sofas and armchairs covered in an off-white linen and floral armchairs clad in a pale-blue hue exudes European eclecticism. Though the palette is understated, O’Neil’s layered details are anything but. “I tried to downplay the formality of the architecture by using antiques ... Swedish antiques have an informality about them,” she says. “I try not to put a home in a time category. I like to mix different influences.” While avoiding trends is one of her mantras, O’Neil says, “There is nobody out there that projects wealth, comfort and estate life better than Ralph Lauren.”

The riverside home supports large gatherings at any given time, but the homeowners did not design or build it for entertaining. “This house really doesn’t have a grand scale,” O’Neil says. “It’s actually really quite cozy.”

illed with natural light from windows offering splendid views of the landscaping, this lovely 4,070-square-foot model home located in The Moorings community of Naples, Fla., is happy and

bright. With an open floor plan and white coastal-chic exterior surrounded by mature trees and bountiful plantings, Kriss Lecocq, design consultant for Traditions Classic Home Furnishings, was presented with a cheerful project where she could utilize her love of nature. “This is a perfect second home,” Lecocq says. “With so much natural light from an abundance of windows, the owners will feel like they have landed in a tranquil indoor-outdoor paradise.” Stunning mahogany wood and glass double doors open to an entry, where European white oak flooring, blue planters and large windows evoke a cozy yet sophisticated aura in the freshly modern sitting lounge. “This room stands out with light neutrals and blue accents that go well with nature,” Lecocq says. “I like organic looks and transitional furnishings … I like mixing old relics with new furnishings. By making a statement in the entry, people will know what is to come.”

ABOVE AND LEFT:

Tropical foliage by Doria’s Landscaping frames the home’s coastal-style architecture that makes the

most of Naples living. Step inside, where a delightful entry is distinguished by design consultant Kriss Lecocq’s use of blue against a light backdrop. Lee Industries’ white club chairs circle a resin-clad cocktail table topped in marble to shape the sitting lounge, while a Lillian August bench in blue velvet picks up the shimmering hues of the pool beyond.

In the great room, the clean, bright and elegant kitchen features transitional light pendants that add a soft glow in complement to the natural light from an array of transom windows. While the adjacent casual dining area presented the only design challenge in the house, it was easily fixable. To open the area, the designer opted for a window front dining table topped in glass. “I paired it with warm and comfortable chairs upholstered in a durable white Sunbrella fabric to withstand the sun,” she says. Natural light flows into the living area, where the crisp, bright scheme repeats with splashes of blue that wash across the neutrals, including the organic brown area rug from Jaipur Living. “The blue fabrics and accessories add a bit of pop to the otherwise calm furnishings,” Lecocq says. “I also like lines that are subtle and make the design look modern in a low-key way.” The master suite is the perfect place to expand the tranquil, tropical theme. The luxurious bath is coastal, clean and simple with round mirrors above the shapely, curved soaking tub and the white,

multi-drawer vanity. Walls painted in pale blue-gray continue the light, airy and nature-oriented design. “I did not want clutter,” the designer says. Custom pieces define the master bedroom that looks like it could have stepped out of a travel poster for an exotic Caribbean island getaway. Views of the pool and landscaping give it a feeling of seclusion and sophistication. The custom-designed bed rests atop a sisal and cotton area rug crafted in a herringbone pattern. White lamps with modern dimpled bases top bedside tables fronted with grasscloth.

A neutral theme continues with Lee Industries’ sofa covered in a linen blend that joins Vanguard Furniture’s cocktail table center stage. Just beyond, a wine room and wet bar combo is getting ready to provide libations for both small and large gatherings.

Lecocq believes the stylish patio with its outside kitchen and living space overlooking the swimming pool is certain to become the home’s favorite room for the lucky owners. It exemplifies indoor-outdoor living and is styled with texture and tropical plantings. Lexington’s teak dining set framed with stainless steel is perfect for entertaining family and friends. “I love the curves of the chairs which add polish and create a statement of sophistication,” she says. Cool and coastal, the house was a pleasurable project for Lecocq to furnish. “I had fun selecting the fabrics, adding textures, and bringing it all together,” she says. “Now the rooms flow beautifully, and the house looks gorgeous inside and out. I love it and hope the future owners feel the great energy that this home resonates.”

nderstated sophistication defines Horizon Yachts’ latest entry into its luxurious class of superyachts. The newly launched

RP120, an exquisite 120-foot-long vessel that made her first U.S. appearance earlier this year, highlights an impressive display for the builder. With its sleek exterior profile drawn by JC Espinosa, a low-resistance hull design, and a contemporary interior designed in collaboration with famed Italian designer Luca Dini, Horizon’s RP120 offers luxury, functionality and superior performance. Its clean-lined, sleek exterior melds with interior sea and sand tones accented with light gray wood detailing that inspires a feeling of tranquility throughout the yacht. With a five en suite stateroom layout and numerous indoor social spaces, the sumptuous interiors lend an air of casual sophistication that flows out to RP120’s exterior decks. Multiple areas for entertaining are found throughout, including foredeck seating, a spacious aft deck and a flybridge deck level that provides an immense area for al fresco entertaining and relaxing. Art Deco-style “Broadway” chairs from Theodore Alexander enjoy the dining room view around a Keno Bros. mid-century modern dining table with its ebony top and sculptural brass base. “I LIKE A LOT OF COLOR, ACCENTS AND TEXTURES,” INTERIOR DESIGNER JERILYN ANTONACCI SAYS. “THE WINDOWS ARE CURVED IN THIS CONDO, SO I PLAYED WITH THE INTERIOR SCHEME TO REFLECT THE OVERALL ARCHITECTURE OF THE SPACE.”

F

resh, crisp and clean are adjectives that come easy to interior designer Jerilyn Antonacci when describing the

4,000-square-foot model she designed in Aqua II at Pelican Isle, a waterfront condominium tower in Naples, Fla., overlooking Wiggins Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. “But I also incorporated nods to the beach, the warm climate and the Florida setting,” she says. The condo, with its polished white glass flooring and open floor plan, stretches in a sweeping crescent from the grand salon to the dining area, kitchen and great room beyond. “The windows are curved in this condo,” Antonacci says. “So I played with the interior scheme to reflect the overall architecture of the space.” In the grand salon and dining area, Antonacci custom-designed floating ceilings and trim details for architectural interest and spatial definition. “I worked with the curvilinear wall,” she adds. “The floating ceilings gave me pockets for the draperies, created a contemporary look, and also allowed me to integrate interesting ambient and custom lighting.” A Kelly Wearstler brushed-gold sculptural chandelier hangs above a sleek ebony dining table based in brass. “Everyone was into silver metallic finishes for a while, but now, it’s all about the mix of metals,” Antonacci says. “When you introduce gold in a more modern way, it adds warmth and can elevate the overall design.” Nearby, the grand salon’s white lacquered sofa table, with its textured gilt cutout, makes just such a statement. “I like the shape of it,” she says. “It’s very modern and organic and goes well with the architecture.”

Wenge wood shapes the kitchen cabinetry, island and cantilevered breakfast bar by Raymond Custom Cabinets. Antonacci “accessorized” the culinary space with laser-cut ceiling panels that match the pattern found on the iridescent glass mosaic backsplash. Ambient pendants by Tech Lighting and Vanguard’s barstools create a modern flavor.

NATURAL ACCENTS INSPIRE THE GREAT ROOM, WHERE THEODORE ALEXANDER’S SOLID OAK “MARKET” COCKTAIL TABLE, PALECEK’S WOVEN WICKER LIGHT PENDANT, AND CURREY & COMPANY’S DRUM TABLE WITH ITS ORGANIC CUT OUTS COMPLETE THE SCENE.

Metallic hues carry through to the kitchen, where black silver nails trim white-leather bar stools that swivel on chrome bases, and linear stainless pulls dress warm, wenge wood cabinetry. Capturing light in motion, canned pendants cast striated light above a cantilevered breakfast bar. “I also added three laser-cut ceiling panels with a custom grid design in the kitchen,” Antonacci says. “They serve as light boxes and mimic the pattern of the tile-and-glass backsplash.” Following the curve, the great room exudes a whimsical feel with its Indonesian-inspired cocktail table and three-tiered wicker chandelier above. Illuminated niches flank a “floating” console with its white lacquer and daisy-patterned wenge wood custom-designed by Antonacci. By contrast, the grand salon has a more formal vibe. A plush velvet sofa and sleek lounge chairs shape a hearthside setting atop a colorful custom area rug.

A plush velvet-clad sofa, Kravet’s “Aero” chairs, and Century’s “Park Slope” cocktail table with its Mozambique veneer and brushed antique brass base form a cozy hearthside setting in the grand salon. The custom Davis & Davis area rug pops with color, while Grate’s linear gas fireplace warms the living space.

Antonacci designed the gas fireplace surround of wenge wood and set it against a crushed capiz-shell feature wall covering that adds texture and sparkle. “Textures are very important to me,” says Antonacci, who created the master suite’s lit headboard niche covered in patterned panels. “It is finished in a hand-cut wall covering with a Polynesian feel to it.” The master bedroom’s weathered wood flooring, wrought-iron armchair and velvet bench all play into that notion. Even in the master bath, grass-cloth walls and woven-wood blinds share space with polished Calcutta marble countertops. On the floor, Antonacci opted for porcelain tile with glass inserts. “It mimics the look of the marble on the counters, but are more durable. They also work with the darker cabinetry,” the designer says. “The space carries that same high-contrast, crisp, contemporary comfort we created throughout.”

ZEN SUPERYACHT

ABOVE AND BELOW:

Relaxation is central to life on

board ZEN. Offering immediate access to and from the water, ZEN’s beach platform is ideal for sunbathing, participating in water sports or hosting parties, and enjoying stunning views.

S

uperyacht ZEN creates a new typology of yachts. Unique in its use of space, the profile of the 262-foot yacht breaks from the typical layered “wedding-cake” appearance, without sacrificing usable space. A collaboration between Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design and Feadship Royal Dutch Shipyards, ZEN caters to the clients’ tendency to spend a large proportion of their time in one preferred lounge and on one particular deck. The result? ZEN concentrates all the owner’s spaces on only two decks. A full-beam front section of the main deck is reserved for the owner state room and lounge, office, and his and hers dressing area and bathroom. At the sides, full-height glass facades offer sweeping vistas of the ocean from those key areas. All of the yacht’s furnishings are custom designed by Sinot and produced by the finest craftsmen. The balanced application of dark wood, chenille fabrics, bronzes with a variety of patinas, and natural materials such as split sandstone and teak, create unity among the different elements. www.sinot.com; www.feadship.nl N
