Naples’ 5th Avenue South has always been the premier destination for locals and visitors alike looking to dine, shop, and be entertained in casual elegance. With its historic charm, sophisticated dining and shopping options, and unmatched entertainment opportunities—all within walking distance to Southwest Florida’s famed sugar-sand beaches—5th Avenue South truly is a must-see! The Avenue’s history is as rich as the sweet and savory delicacies offered up by its many restaurants and cafés. Over the decades, 5th Avenue South has flourished and reinvented itself, but one thing hasn’t changed: It is still the heart and soul of Naples. It’s the gathering and meeting place where businesses thrive, dayto-day life happens, and vibrant nightlife is found—the place where an afternoon errand may include a stop at the beach to watch the stunning sunset. The business owners that share this exclusive address offer a level of service and merchandise that is unmatched and simply won’t be found anywhere else in Southwest Florida, or even the world. Many are owned by locals who take pride in continuing a tradition in downtown Naples. If these sidewalks could talk, they would invite you to stroll up and down the Avenue under clear blue skies, stopping to chat, meet a friend, grab a bite to eat and enjoy life in Naples—just as locals and visitors have been doing for nearly 100 years.

For more than four decades, the Nelson family has operated one of Naples’ most treasured boutiques: Silver Eagle Gallery.

Outside Silver Eagle Gallery, palm trees sway in the tropical Naples breeze—but inside this upscale jewelry and art boutique is a vibrant slice of the American Southwest. Authentic Native American treasures like silver and turquoise jewelry fill glass cases around the space, while an extensive array of artwork graces the walls and stimulates the senses. Curating these items has been the passion of one Naples family for more than 40 years, a mission that began with Craig and Deborah Nelson and is now shared by their son and daughter, Benjamin and Heather. “We have worked together since the beginning, when they were children,” Deborah says. “Silver Eagle is a true American family business.”
Deborah and Craig founded the business in Wisconsin in 1974, selling plants, gifts, and silver jewelry. While neither is Native American, they have both admired the culture since they were children. Eventually, they decided to teach others about this storied heritage by selling indigenous arts and crafts. “We felt that bringing Native American art to a global market would improve the lives of the artists and their tribes,” says Deborah. To accomplish this, the Nelsons forged strong relationships with Navajo, Zuni, Hopi, and Santo Domingo silversmiths through frequent buyer trips to New Mexico. Over time, their gallery focused exclusively on Native American works. “We believe strongly in treating our customers, employees, and artists with respect,” says Deborah. “We are proud of our reputation in our community, with the artists, and with our customers.” The move to 5th Avenue South came 20 years ago, when Deborah visited Naples with her father. Impressed by the number of visitors— particularly international travelers—she viewed Naples as the perfect place to showcase the talent of Native American artists. “I immediately saw the potential,” she recalls. “I walked into an African gallery selling diamonds and fine African art. The gallery owner mentioned his space
was available, and I signed a seven-year lease on the spot.” For years, Craig and Deborah traveled monthly between Wisconsin and Florida. They decided to search for another gallery location within a one-day drive of either destination and found an ideal spot in western North Carolina, opening a Silver Eagle outpost there in 2004. The galleries have grown steadily over the years and now represent more than 200 artists from more than 20 tribes. Silver Eagle also carries crystals, gems, rocks, and minerals as well as metaphysical products. The Nelsons hand-select all of the merchandise themselves. “Quality and authenticity are most important to us, so we travel to the source—New Mexico—several times a year,” Deborah says. Today, the next generation is helping lead the family business: Heather, a professional photographer and stylist, and Ben, a silversmith and designer, assist their parents in managing the stores. Besides accomplishing the mission of raising awareness of Native American culture, Deborah says Silver Eagle has brought important life lessons to her family. “We raised our children in our galleries,” she says. “They observed us interacting with artists, suppliers, and customers every day and learned how ethical principles bring rewards and success—in life and in business.” 850 5th Avenue South, 239.403.3033, silvereaglegallery.com

More than 40 glass artists alone are represented here at any time, with others available for one-of-a-kind commissions. “We have a vast repertoire of artists and are always bringing in new works,” says gallery owner MaryLou Chronister. “We have a core group of collectors that come in every season and also work a lot with interior designers.” 770 5th Avenue South, 239.263.0835, galleryonenaples.com

Ashley Adams Fine Art This high-end antiques shop is brimming with collectibles such as Meissen and Limoges porcelain, hand-carved ivory and jade, as well as rugs, fountains, and European furniture. “I change [the inventory] around a lot, so there is always something new,” says owner Pete Pineiro. “We have a lot of bronze statues of golfers, children, and tropical wildlife, and on any given day there are 15 or so statues outside.” 795 5th Avenue South, 239.435.7273 Mary Martin Gallery of Fine Art The newest addition to the 5th Avenue South arts scene, Mary Martin represents 107 international artists of varying mediums. “We decided to open a gallery in Naples because we found that it is one of the top cities in Florida for fine art sales,” says consultant Chase Barrett. Compared with the gallery’s other outpost in Charleston, South Carolina, “people here like a little more abstract and contemporary art, but we also sell a lot of traditional work,” he says. 365 5th Avenue South, #101 A, 239.234.6161, mmgnaples.com

The Avenue offers endless fun for residents and visitors—and a popular venue for local charities to champion their cause. BY ANNA BJORLIN

30 5TH AVENUE SOUTH
It may be known as Naples’ premier thoroughfare for exclusive dining and shopping, but 5th Avenue South also plays host to a variety of events throughout the year, including colorful parades, art and wine festivals, and annual holiday celebrations. As thousands of people flock to 5th to have fun, there is a much bigger purpose behind the merriment: helping local charitable organizations raise awareness and funds. Here’s a look at three of the many nonprofits that have reaped the benefits of 5th Avenue South.

Last year, two BGCCC students were named Youth of the Year and got to ride in a green Cadillac in the Avenue’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. And in 2015, kids marched in the annual Christmas Parade, and sang and performed ballet at the Tree Lighting Ceremony. Aside from shining a spotlight on the charity, these events give students a chance to show off their skills, Heck says: “The events not only engage the youth in the community and give them volunteer time but also bring in their peers and showcase the programs and services we provide at the club. It’s a way for kids to go out and show how active they are in the areas of arts and culture.”

Attendees of 5th Avenue South’s 2014 Christmas Parade witnessed a special guest navigating the route: a nearly 5-foot-long iguana. The reptile was representing Kowiachobee Animal Preserve (kowiachobee. org), a unique educational facility designed to teach younger generations about animal and environmental conservation. “We don’t really fit into a category very easily, because we’re not an attraction,” says Kowiachobee cofounder John Slaby. “We don’t do a 5TH AVENUE SOUTH 31

Every January, the sidewalks all along the Avenue are covered with colorful images as part of the annual Chalk Art Festival, hosted by the Naples Pelican Bay Rotary. Local businesses sponsor chalk drawings for a cash prize, often in support of a nonprofit such as the Boys and Girls Club of Collier County (bgccc.com). “We bring in our art director, art department, and kids involved in [the club], and they sketch out a drawing using chalk,” says Tiffany Heck, vice president of resource development at BGCCC. “The community can buy raffle tickets and put them in for the artwork they want to win. At the end, the piece of chalk art with the most raffle tickets wins—and the money goes back toward the club’s programs and services. Last year alone,

And, of course, we had a giant cauldron of candy for them to pick from afterward.” Cullen says she and her team use these opportunities to inform the public about important topics such as maintaining mental health and preventing substance abuse. “These events benefit our agency in many ways, especially since word of mouth is the best way to get ideas and information out,” she says. “It’s amazing to think that in five hours, BACK IN TIME our prevention team of four was able to connect with over The first 1,000 town lots in Naples were purchased in the late 1880s 2,000 people—all of whom for $10 apiece. now know about our agency.”

These conversations, in turn, translate into greater interest and awareness for Kowiachobee. “The comment I hear most often is, ‘I never knew you were there,’” Slaby says. “We always get more people visiting the preserve after these events. Having this venue is really wonderful.”
