THE FIFTH AVENUE

EXPERIENCE

By Ashley Huntsberry-Lett

Naples’ “main street” has long been a favorite among locals and visitors. And it just keeps getting better. Whether you’re a newcomer looking to spend an unforgettable day in Naples or a seasoned resident in search of a perfect night on the town, you’ll find it on Fifth Avenue South. One of the nation’s most exclusive addresses, Fifth Avenue South is an exciting combination of bustling energy and relaxed sophistication. From the upscale

shopping and dining to the laidback entertainment, the beloved avenue long referred to as Naples’ “main street” has been one of the city’s most popular attractions for decades—for both tourists and residents alike. A walk down Fifth Avenue South, which stretches from the Tamiami Trail to the Gulf of Mexico in Old Naples, is an event in itself. Local boutiques share quaint blocks with national brand stores, while international restaurants fill the air with intoxicating aromas. You’ll be swept away in the Mediterranean-style architecture and rich landscaping. And come nightfall, you’ll be awestruck as white-lighted trees transform the street into a magical place. It’s

no wonder residents keep coming back to eat, shop and play, and visitors leave eager to come back for more. Shopping on Fifth Avenue South is a must—both enjoyable and easy, as the choices are endless. Pop in and out of dozens of shops filled with chic clothes, handbags and shoes, many of which are the remarkable creations of local boutiques. Browse the handcrafted jewelry as well as custom and estate pieces that are abundant on the Avenue. Pick up the perfect gift at one of the many unique shops selling oneof-a-kind keepsakes. Take home an original work of art—or just admire the beauty—from one of the seven world-class galleries. Thinking about a remodel? Distinctive home furnishings shops offer high-design and top-notch advice for anyone who wants to take advantage of the custom

interior design services. Of course, a day of shopping can zap you of energy. So head over to one of the luxurious spas and salons for a little revitalization—a massage, a manicure, a pedicure, or perhaps a fresh new hair style for your night on the town. nue South past myriad restaurants, markets and cafes offering prime steaks, fresh seafood from the Gulf, authentic Italian food, tapas, desserts, Persian cuisine, French fare…. There are so many mouthwatering options to please every palate, and discerning locals love to frequent the area in search of their new favorite gem. After dinner, you might check

out a live theater performance by The Naples Players or the Gulfshore Playhouse. Then put on your dancing shoes to visit one of the many restaurants featuring latenight entertainment, or relax with a cocktail or coffee and some live jazz at one of the more casual establishments. Then get some sleep—because there’s much more to do and see tomorrow.

The international vibe you sense as you meander down Fifth Avenue South isn’t coming solely from the delicious aromas wafting out of the many restaurants. Downtown Naples is a true merging of cultures—home to residents and business owners who speak more than 30 different languages. The Café, a quaint eatery on the corner of Fifth Avenue South and 8th Street that specializes in breakfast, lunch and baked goods, is run by the Danish Madsen family. Sushi spot Osetra (also renowned for its caviar and Champagne menu), serves up a taste of Japan from Chef Kaoru Saganawa from Okinawa. And The Brick Coffee and Bar, a local favorite for espresso, paninis and wine, gets its authentic Euro flair from Bulgarian owners Dimitar Koev and Emil Atanassov. Walking down Fifth Avenue South, you might hear conversations in French, Spanish, Farsi, Macedonian, Flemish or Romanian. It's that unique blend of languages, cultures and cuisines that makes Naples’ downtown an attractive destination for international travelers and a true cultural experience for American visitors.

TRUE While new businesses are always met with excitement, Fifth Avenue South wouldn’t be the same without those who have planted some serious roots. By Ashley Huntsberry-Lett PHOTOGRAPHY BY VANESSA ROGERS

The Neapolitan landscape is constantly evolving with new businesses joining the community all the time. But along Fifth Avenue South, there are a number of businesses that have stood the test of time. Some have changed hands and locations over the years, but longtime residents recognize many friendly, familiar faces—and a walk past certain blocks is a walk down memory lane. By the numbers: 27 retail businesses and

organizations have called Fifth Avenue South home for 15 years or longer, while seven of those have been around for more than 30 years—including Oliver’s Barber Shop, a staple on the 800 block since 1953. Schmitt Jeweler is another one of the “elite seven.” There’s hardly a local who hasn’t heard of the third-generation luxury jeweler that has been open for business for 44 years. About a block to the west sits Port Royal Jewelers, the

boutique jeweler was opened by the Boyajian family in 1968 under the name Landmark Gems and continues the family legacy today under its new name. And not a visitor has passed through Naples in the past 51 years without being tempted by a unique find at The Blue Mussel. Opened in 1962 by Bea Sweet—and later bought by New England transplant Larry Liss, who runs the shop today—The Blue Mussel has been wowing locals and tourists with its collection of coral and seashells, jewelry and rare gifts from all over the world for half a century. Others may not be quite as established in terms of years on the Avenue but are certainly quintessential fixtures on the scene. One that comes to mind is The Name Game. The eclectic gift shop owned and operated by husband-and-wife team Gil and Gloria Kovacs has been on Fifth Avenue for 20 years, undergoing an expansion in 2002. Residents and visitors love popping in to check out the Kovacs’ ever-changing unique wares— artwork, jewelry, home goods and a wide selection of gifts, including a variety of personalized “name” items. The Kovacs love seeing repeat customers who have become friends

and showing newcomers what Naples is all about. “We consider the store an extension of our home and love talking with people,” says Gloria. It’s that warm atmosphere the Kovacs create that keeps customers from around the world coming back for more. When it comes to historical significance, Bellini on Fifth Italian Ristorante has a long legacy that is unmistakably present in its fine Italian cuisine and specialty cocktails. Family matriarch Maria, son Massimo and daughter Stefania began sharing their passion for fresh, quality food 18 years ago, when they first opened their doors on Fifth Avenue South. The restaurant has undergone a lot of changes since then—it expanded into a larger space with a martini bar and added a spacious patio for alfresco dining. But one thing has not changed: the authentic recipes and traditional cooking methods. “We have no heat lamps or microwaves in the kitchen,” Stefania says. “Everything is cooked to order, and all of our sauces are made from scratch.” Bellini also specializes in the refreshing cocktail that is its namesake—chilled Prosecco and peach nectar. A number of creative

Regina’s Ice Cream

The years, and even decades, of success that these (and many other) Fifth Avenue South shops and restaurants have enjoyed is no doubt due to the enthusiasm and dedication of their owners. Providing the highest quality products and making each patron’s experience genuinely unique, warm and memorable is the kind of small-town hospitality that makes Naples a true paradise.

variations on the classic Bellini are also available for patrons looking for something a bit more adventurous. Traditional Main Street culture simply would not be complete without a classic ice cream parlor. Enter Regina’s Ice Cream. Husband and wife Sal and Regina Tenaglia opened Regina’s back in 1988, and this year they celebrate a quarter of a century on Fifth Avenue South. It’s easy to see why Regina’s is so popular: The nostalgic 1950s decor makes it a quaint place to grab a delicious sweet treat. And did we mention the ice cream? The parlor offers 50 scrumptious flavors—some creatively named for the city, like Port Royal Praline and Downtown Cup a’Joe—plus classic malts, egg creams and freshly made waffle cones.

visitors and residents alike can see that Fifth Avenue South is bustling with top-notch restaurants, sophisticated arts and incomparable shopping. But when it comes to the area’s rich history, there are some little-known facts that even the most learned locals may not know. Here are a few interesting tidbits from our friends at the Naples Historical Society and the Collier County Museum.

Parties on the Pier

Because of hurricane damage, the Naples Pier has been rebuilt three times since it first went up in 1888. It has always been a popular spot for fishing and sunset-viewing, but the pier has served our residents well in other ways over the years as well. In 1944, dancing on the pier was a popular activity. Prior to that, it was used as a passenger dock (including freight lifts) and was even home to a post office at one point.

The first traffic light in Naples went up in 1948. The location? Appropriately, at Four Corners— one of the most famous intersections in Naples. Florida Power & Light charged about $5 to install a light fixture at the time.

Fuel for Thought

Ed Frank, an expert mechanic who would later develop the swamp buggy, opened Naples’ first garage in 1927, on Fifth Avenue South near 10th Street atop a landmass he referred to as “a gator hole.” With the increase in traffic after the opening of the Tamiami Trail in 1928, Frank built an attached coffee shop in 1931. courtesy of The Naples Historical Society

Before becoming known for its posh boutiques and five-star restaurants, the downtown area was home to Naples’ first golf course—a nine-hole fairway stretching from Third Street to Cambier Park. Today, Naples has the most golf holes per capita in the country and is home to more than 80 championship courses.
