At once elegant and relaxed, this lovely promenade in the heart of downtown captures the distinctive character of Naples. An all-day destination for the whole family, the Avenue’s six bustling blocks offer world-class restaurants and casual sidewalk cafés, acclaimed art galleries, outstanding community and professional theater, unique boutiques and upscale fashion, an enchanting inn, beautiful courtyards, soothing spas, stylish salons, and a magnificent city park. Just down the Avenue, the gentle waves, sugary white sands, and stunning orange-red sunsets of the Gulf of Mexico await. In the evenings, Fifth Avenue South is simply magical. Arts and culture abound with plenty of restaurants, pubs, and bars featuring live music, DJs, and dancing— weeknights and weekends, happy hour to late night. Be sure to keep abreast of the special events and festivals on the Avenue throughout the year, including the Naples Grape Escape Food, Wine & Craft Beer Festival in November and Evenings on Fifth on the second Thursday of each month during season. Find out more about these and other events on page 34, and be sure to check out fifthavenuesouth.com and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for updates. OF 5TH A big part of the Avenue’s charm are the many familiar faces who have been serving Naples residents and visitors for decades. Shop owners come—and stay—passing the family business down from one generation to the next. Here’s a look at the people behind a few of your favorite Fifth Avenue South establishments.

our 40-year history by drawing on the best products that the local market has to offer, complemented by a few French delicacies, like cheese, escargot, duck, Champagne, and wines that we import from home,” says Amy. A customized menu appeals to local tastes, and the owners collaborate with locally based food producers. On any given day, diners might also meet Amy and Romuald’s 2-year-old daughter, Chloé. “She’s the restaurant mascot,” jokes Amy. And while the Giacomettis are far from their native France, they say their customers have made Naples—and Fifth Avenue— feel like a true home. “We’re away from our respective families, but Chloé has attracted a host of surrogate grandparents among our regular clients,” says Amy.

Of course, the restaurant is popular with French expats as well. “We have a significantly high proportion of Francophone clientele,” says Amy. Add to that the fact that about half of the employees speak French, and, she adds, “an evening out at La Bazenne can really feel like being transported back to France.” C’est si bon.

Bob and Robert Baker

Bob Baker Shoes If you’re wondering who “Bob” is of Bob Baker Shoes, well, there are a lot of them. It all began with a man who was not a Bob, Jean Kalyd Baker. Lovingly known as “K,” Jean brought fabulous footwear to the Sunshine State in 1939, when he started his own shoe line in Hollywood called Prevue Shoes. Throughout the next two decades, the business grew and expanded. K opened his first storefront in Fort Lauderdale in 1945, followed by a second, seasonal location in Petoskey, Michigan. In 1951, K’s son Bob—the original Bob—took over

the company, introduced many of his own designs, and changed the name to what it is today. In 1964, Bob brought Baker Shoes to Naples, opening a store on Third Street South—the city’s first women’s shoe store. His son, Bob Jr., and daughter, Kalie, joined the family business in 1978. Bob Jr. ran the Naples store while Kalie oversaw the Fort Lauderdale shop (it closed its doors in 1988). Bob Sr. stayed on for the next 20 years, but in 1998 the family business was in for some big changes. That was the year Bob Sr. retired, and the family moved the business to Fifth Avenue. With an eye to all the exciting changes happening on the Avenue, they seized the opportunity to lease a spot on the 700 block—formerly occupied by Ingram Hardware—where Bob Baker Shoes remains today. It was a decision that the family says certainly helped the business flourish. “I love Fifth Avenue,” Bob Jr. says. “I love

the location, close to the Gulf. I love the trees, the new architecture mixed in with some of the old…. It’s a destination street. Anyone who comes to town loves to visit here. We get all kinds—lots of families, groups of women, even tour buses that come from the East Coast and stop in to shop.” Today, Bob Jr. is grooming the fourth generation of Bakers for a career in the family business. His son Robert (Bob number three) currently works in the store. His son Patrick and niece Kobie have helped out in the past. Even his youngest daughter, 12-year-old Chelsea, has been known to pitch in from time to time. And that’s just the way he likes it. Says Bob Jr. of Naples and the Avenue: “I love it here, raising a family.”

Hitachino Nest Beer

Avenue Wine Café “It’s a wheat beer from Japan,” says owner Colin Estrem of this unusual brew. “Japan usually produces lagers, but it has recently begun to make white ale—and it’s very popular in America.”

We lightly fold in jumbo lump blue crab and serve it with our sweet and spicy broiled cod.”

Osteria Tulia “We braise them whole with aromatic vegetables and broth,” says Vincenzo Betulia, chef/ co-owner of the Naples, Italy–inspired restaurant. “We slice them thin, dust them in flour, then

Yabba Island Grill “A fillet of Florida black grouper is butterflied and stuffed with our house crab-cake mix,” says executive chef Chris Metzler, who delivers delicious local seafood inspired by the tropics. “It’s breaded with a cornflakepanko mixture and pan-fried to a golden brown. The whole dish is dressed with a pineapple sweet-and-sour sauce laced with a Japanese pepper blend, and then we top it with fresh julienned mango.”

elcome to Naples! Naples is home to many of America’s top executives, TV personalities and foreign business leaders because of the unsurpassed quality of life that Naples has to offer: Perfect winter weather, nationally and internationally renowned visual and performing arts, an abundance of top notch restaurants, quality shopping, wonderful art galleries, Naples’ internationally acclaimed white powder sand beaches and so much more. I moved to Naples in 2001 to enjoy the Naples lifestyle and for me it was one of the best decisions I ever made. It will be one of your best decisions, too. Once I became familiar with Naples real estate along the beach I started buying and selling real estate and today I make it my passion to help visitors become residents after helping them find the home of their dreams. As a Certified Luxury Home Marketing Specialist, Realtor® and Top Producer at John R. Wood Properties I encourage you to call me when you are ready to buy your first (or second or third) luxury home or condominium in Naples or, if you already own property here, to call me when you are ready to list and sell your luxury home or condominium. Today I’m one of Naples top producing real estate agents along the beach - from Pelican Bay on the north to Port Royal on the south and west of US41. I want to put my knowledge, experience, professionalism and top rated service to work for you and help you accomplish your real estate goals in Naples. Get the results you deserve.
