Coronado Beach Villas/ Coronado, CA/ Residential Christian Rice Architects, Inc. The project is a new development for 6 townhomes at one of the main intersections in Coronado. Inspired by the architecture of the Rosemary Beach community in Florida, this group of villas resemble the diversity of a small town within a city lot. A walkway connects all the homes, creating a communal courtyard for all the units. Colors, materials and design details give each house its own identity and the sense of character that differentiates them.

General Plot Plan Notes:

CMC 86.14.130 Development Landscaping Required

1) See specifications for general construction requirements.

A. A minimum of 25 percent of the total site area of new residential developments and 15 percent of the total site of new non-residential developments shall be landscaped. Required parking spaces shall not be considered as a portion of the required landscaping.

2) A/C units cannot be placed in the front or side yard setbacks, or in the five-foot rear yard (accessory building) setback, unless they are under two feet in height compared to the average grade. All machinery must conform to the City of Coronado Noise Ordinance. See site plan for A/C locations.

B. When new construction or additions over 500 square feet in size are constructed, the property owner shall plant a street tree in the public right-of-way adjacent to said property, if space is available. All shade trees shall have a minimum tow-inch diameter trunk (measured four feet, six inches above the root crown) and palm trees shall have a minimum sixfoot brown trunk. The tree species and planting shall be at the direction of the City of Coronado in accordance with City specifications and the City’s approved street tree list. Country Club Residence/ Coronado/ Residential Christian Rice Architects, Inc. The exisitng house underutilized the allowable building area for this corner lot in Coronado. To maximize the buildable area, the scope of work for this house included the remodel of the kitchen, living room, dining room and laundry room, and additions of a guest room, master bedroom and master bathroom. A grand front porch and rear covered porch with folding doors were added, extending the living spaces to the exterior and blurring the separation between inside and outside.

Hillhurst United Center/Calgary, Canada/ Community Center International Ideas Competition The Hillhurst United Center is a place that promotes cooperation and invites people to share ideas; this neighborhood hub, provides spaces for innovation and allowes people to interact productively. The building is divided in two zones: open collective learning at the lounge areas of the first floor, and more intimate collaboration spaces on the second floor. Communal spaces connect to the courtyard allowing the first floor to become an open living room for the community. The courtyard, at the center of the building, is the focal point where visual connection and informal gathering take place.

EASA013 Pavilion/ Zuzemberk, Slovenia/ Pavilion International Ideas Competion/ Collaboration: Yoo Jin Lee The project reacts to the structure of memory, presence and significance that used to exist on the site, where Saint Jacobâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church served as a congregational space for the community. The programs given in the competition have an interesting relationship of performer-audience, act and react, qualities relevant to the theater typology. We took the typical theater, and varied its elevational qualities for different programs. The undulating sectional change allows for spaces below and above to be occupied. The pavilion is defined by its central courtyard, located where the Church used to stand. When the courtyard is activated by programs and is occupied, it is as if the church is again recalled in its use of assembly and social gathering.

Solar Roofpod/ New York City/ Residential DOE Solar Decathlon Competition The Solar Roofpod, a net zero energy modular house, is designed to be on rooftops of high density cities. It is conceived in three different layers: the pad (wood decking modules and planters), the pod (the house), and the solar trellis (contains PV panels and evacuated tubes). Each of these layers are built in modules of 5’4” that can easily be interchangeable and adjusted to the owner’s preference and site constraints.

Bicentennial Library/ Rosario, Argentina/ Library International Competition; Collaboration: Llonch+Vidalle Architecture, Pablo Alemeida, Jenny Cadena, Sunwoo Lee, Yoo Jin Lee, Sean Stevenson The site sits across a landmark building designed by Alvaro Siza. Part of competition criteria was to relate to this important building. The diagonal cut that divides the plaza and the front facade of the building, creates a visual connection with a corner window in Siza’s building. The building was divided in three zones; library, cultural and public spaces. The circulation and distribution to these areas mimic a market, typical in South America; streets direct the user to every stand in this “Market of Books.”

Williamsburg Recreational Center/ Brooklyn, NY/ Recreation Center Thesis Project The Recreation Center, located at the East River State Park in Williamsburg, activates the streets of the neighborhood and invites its residents to participate on the different activities inside. The buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s location serve as a gateway to the park, and its geometry directs views towards the city backdrop and the activities in the park. The Center contains programs for recreation, relaxation and learning, allowing groups of all ages to utilize all the different programs it provides.
