5 PB Devco News
MULLED WINE YOU’LL need: Large pan or slow cooker, 1 large piece of coarse cheese cloth and ribbon. Ingredients: (this method should yield around 2 litres and all the spices can be used again) THE BOOZE 2 bottles spicy red, preferably Rioja, 50ml Grand Marnier, 50ml brandy, 100ml Ruby Port, 50ml sugar syrup or honey, 500ml cold water THE SPICE BOMB 1 tsp ground nutmeg, 1 tsp ground ginger, 1 tsp allspice, 1 vanilla pod THE AROMA CROWN 1 orange, 20 cloves, 1 cinnamon stick (5 inch), 2 star anise
DECADENT HOT CHOCOLATE Ingredients 2 tbsp good quality hot chocolate powder, 1 mug milk, 25ml Kahlua liqueur, 25ml Frangelico liqueur, whipped cream, marshmallow fluff, dark chocolate shavings Method 1. Heat your milk either on the hob or in the microwave, being careful not to scald. 2. Stir in the hot chocolate powder and add the Kahlua and Frangelico. Stir again. 3. Finish with a spoonful of marshmallow fluff and whipped cream, sprinkle with chocolate shavings.
METHOD 1. FOR THE SPICE BOMB: Carefully split the vanilla pod and scrape the seeds out into the middle of the cheese cloth then add the ginger, nutmeg and allspice, tie with ribbon. 2. FOR THE AROMA CROWN: Stud the orange with cloves in two lines and break the cinnamon stick in two and place in either side of the orange. 3. Pour the wine and water into a large pan or slow cooker, place on a very gentle heat and add the spice bomb, aroma crown and star anise. Add the Grand Marnier, brandy, port and sugar syrup. The aim is to let the flavours infuse into wine for as long as possible, preferably overnight. 4. Serve in a glass mug or large wine glass with dried orange and star anise.
HOT TODDY Ingredients 50ml Drambuie, 1 tbsp honey, 1 tsp lemon juice, 1 cinnamon stick , 1 mug of hot water Method 1. Put your honey and Drambuie into a mug or heatproof glass. 2. Add the cinnamon stick and top up with hot water. 3. Finish by stirring in lemon juice and garnish with a lemon slice.

we chat to Iain Matheson, Iain McLean, Rohan Cree and Leigh Summers, who make up local 4 piece cover band, Furryboots! As individuals, you all have extensive experience playing in different groups. Why did you decide to form Furryboots? How did you all meet? We’ve all built up our experiences playing in a wide range of bands over the years ranging from blues to theatre orchestras. Rohan and Iain McLean used to play in one of Aberdeen’s leading Indie bands, Eskimo Blonde and Iain Matheson used to play in the same band as Rohan’s father which meant that pulling the three of them together was easy. The search for our bass player led to discovering Leigh who was keen to return to the gigging circuit after a hiatus raising his family. Furryboots were formed so that we could satisfy our collective desire to play totally live music to great crowds across Scotland. The added advantage of having a traditional accordion player in the band means that we play a ceilidh set which naturally drew us to the Wedding (and Hogmanay!) circuit. How did you decide on your band name? What was the inspiration? Choosing a band name can be difficult and we wanted something that reflects the fact we’re from the North East of Scotland. With the local dialect pronouncing “where abouts are you playing?” as “far ‘aboots are ye playin?” we thought Furryboots would work well. We have had to explain the name more the further south of Stonehaven that we go! You have a great large and varied set list; how do you decide which songs to learn/cover? Over and above our Ceilidh songs, our set list sits at around 50-60 numbers that we regularly play, which as any function band will tell you takes a lot of rehearsal. It’s mainly through these rehearsal sessions 9 PB Devco News
that you realise if a songs working well or not, it may gel straight away and be “in the bag” with others taking much longer, some just don’t work out at all. Our aim is to play songs from the 50’s through to the current decade and the real test of the set list is on the night in front of an audience. With gigs ranging from castles to caves under our belts, we have a good idea of which songs work best for us and the audience.
Do you ever get nervous? All the time! We’ve not seen anyone in either this band or the bands we’ve previously been part of that have not felt nervous before playing. Our aim is to please everyone on the night and that naturally makes you nervous. The goal is to turn the nerves into energy at every gig. You are a great group for wedding parties, as you offer a large set list plus the ability to play traditional ceilidh music. What is your favourite thing about playing to a wedding crowd? For us, even for a local Wedding, we’re pretty much devoting a whole day to put on the gig. From loading up, to setting up and soundchecking then playing and packing everything up and getting home, we could be looking at 12-14 hours, so
On the subject of ‘favourites’… what are your favourite songs to play together as a group? We love playing blues/rock and funk however we also try and throw in some unexpected song choices depending on the crowd. We’ve been known to play from Minnie the Moocher to the Everly Brothers to Metallica to Pink Floyd in the
same set if we can get away with it – it’s really down to the audience on the night.
Which artists/groups inspired you to become musicians? Iain Matheson: Gary Moore, Tom Petty, ACDC and Pink Floyd. Iain McLean: Bruce Springsteen, INXS, and Iron Maiden. Rohan: Buddy Rich, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and Pink Floyd. Leigh: The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Status Quo.
If you could describe Furryboots in three words, what would they be? Versatile, Entertaining and Live! For more information about Furryboots, visit their website at: www.furrybootsband.com.
we wouldn’t do it unless we thoroughly enjoyed it. Weddings are a special day where the main focus is on the Bride and Groom with the band being an integral part of the evening entertainment and are expected to play a wide range of music. It’s this wide range that we enjoy the most. One minute we’re using double bass, harmonica and one set of male vocals then it all changes to electric bass, keys and a different vocalist. It keeps us on our toes but it’s great fun!
