FAQ’S "CAN I FLY A DRONE IN A COUNTY PARK?"

Although County Code, Chapter 21 does restrict the taking off and landing of some aerial apparatus within County-operated parks, recreational drone operators

The exceptions are those parks where disturbing of wildlife, particularly dense areas of nesting wildlife, is a concern or drone operation poses a public safety hazard. County parks where drones may not be flown are nature centers, associated trails and adjacent wetlands (Green Cay, Daggerwing, and Okeeheelee Nature Centers), Riverbend Park, Loxahatchee River Battlefield Park, and the Morikami Museum and Japanese Garden. Although recreational drone operation is encouraged at West Delray Regional Park and Dyer Park, our other regional, beach, and district parks are also an option. Commercial drone photography does require a permit per County Code, Chapter 21.

PARK GATES HOURS/DOG PARKS Park staff makes every effort to open all parks by sunrise; however, due to staffing limitations, budget constraints, and the large number of parks overall in our park system, there will be days when a few of our parks won’t open exactly at sunrise. We appreciate your understanding and patience. We also invite you to take advantage of one of our volunteer opportunities: opening park gates at sunrise. Please consider joining the Parks and Recreation Department by emailing parksvol@pbcgov.org if you are interested in this volunteer opportunity. We appreciate your patience in this matter and hope you’ll consider joining our team.

Thanks to the facility, he said, he got the courage to get back in the water and try new sports after a spinal cord injury. DePastino said, “at the beginning of a spinal cord injury… all your friends kind of disappear so it’s like you only have a group of people around and pretty much your rugby team’s there for you, your teammates are there for you so you’re not alone.” Groups like Endless Possibilities for the Disabled, a local non-profit that supports adaptive sports in Palm Beach County, ensure there is a feeling of inclusion among the many athletes who play at the facility. “We use our disabilities in a strong way, in a powerful way,” said Mikki Collier, treasurer for the organization. The group has a number of athletes who play sports like boccia, goalball, aquatic activities and more at the Therapeutic Recreation Complex. “The center here is one of the most fabulous centers for therapeutic recreation that I’ve ever seen - it’s got the facility, it’s got people that are trained in pretty much each of the sports,” said Gary Elsner, President of Endless Possibilities for the Disabled.

AQUATIC ACTIVITIES Of the many programs that participants can enjoy at the Therapeutic Recreation Complex, Diveheart scuba training is popular among people living with disabilities who want to get back in the water. Did you know the Virginia

Opossum is the only native marsupial in North America? Sean Mallee, Daggerwing Nature Center’s manager shares some fun facts about the Virginia Opossum, a native Florida species that can be found in Palm Beach County parks.

Virginia Opossum

Q

How long do Virginia Opossums live?

Q

How do Virginia Opossums navigate the world?

A

They only live about four years in human care – even less in the wild.

A

Because they are nocturnal, opossums use a sense of smell to help discover their world and kind of feel through the night time to find food.

Q

What do Virginia Opossums eat?

Q

A

They are omnivores, so they eat both plants and animals. This includes worms, frogs, lizards, small animals, as well as fruits. Amongst all the other things they eat, opossums like to eat ticks. This helps us avoid some of the diseases carried by ticks. They also have a very low body temperature that helps protect them against other diseases like rabies.

What are their natural defenses?

A

Their main defense is to play dead. Opossums do this when they get really scared, by flopping over. They may even foam at the mouth and give off an odor.

Pickerelweed

One of the more common plants that can be found in South Florida is called Pickerelweed. Recreation Programs Supervisor Donald Campbell shares some cool facts about the well-known South Florida native that can be found by the shoreline in many Palm Beach County parks.

View the video: www.youtube.com/pbcparks

Q: Where is Pickerelweed found? A: This is a very common wetland plant that’s found generally along the shoreline. It can grow in water that’s anywhere from a few inches deep to two to three feet deep.

Did you spot le pickerelweed whi end visiting a park? S tell us us a photo and prize! where, to win a • 14

Q: How does Pickerelweed benefit the environment? A: Pickerelweed is a plant that helps stabilize the shoreline. It’s something that a lot of the micro- and macroinvertebrates will feed on. They feed on Pickerelweed portions of the plant under the water, which in turn help feed other things like fish. Butterflies will come up to the flowers, and birds or ducks will eat some of the seeds.

Q: What are its flowers like? A: Pickerelweed is a very pretty plant with lavender, purple-ish flowers when it’s along a nice spike that it blooms on. The plant itself flowers primarily between spring and the fall, and it’ll be a continuous flower. While a lot of things can eat the flowers, generally the seeds are eaten by ducks, and insects pollinate the flowers.

Janet Young

EPISODE 1 Janet Young

is a resident of Palm Beach County and a student at Palm Beach State College. She was recently a guest on the Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department’s Power of Parks Podcast, where PBC Parks shares inspiring stories from people who have benefited from nature, parks and recreation. What started as a simple project for her Honors Health Class, turned into her writing and publishing an article for the Hippocrates Wellness Institute Magazine about the benefits of nature for students. The project also inspired her to transform the PBSC Lake Worth Campus nature trail as a dedication to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooting victims and to help students at PBSC de-stress and unwind.

Growing up, Janet Young was always inspired by nature and the outdoors. “I’ve been in nature my whole life, since I was a kid. Going outdoors and playing on bicycles and climbing trees, that’s just always been something that’s been a part of me,” Young said. As an adult at Palm Beach State College, what started as a class project turned into an important journey that led her to share the power of nature and natural settings with those who need it most. The POWER of parks

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Though she feels that this journey was important, Young also stated it was not enough, and more should be done to bring awareness of the power of nature to students in particular. For her, endless inspiration can be found in natural settings.

KIM RYAN DUBOIS PIONEER HOME DOCENT

“A lot of my ideas come to me when I’m running out at a park or just outside…I was actually at Okeeheelee Park when I decided that I wanted to try to get a memorial going and do something in honor of those who lost their lives in Parkland through nature,” Young said.

KIM RYAN is one of the four “original” DuBois Pioneer Home historical docents. She started at the home in 2015 after the historical landmark and popular museum was renovated. After working more than 30 years for the Palm Beach County School District, Ryan found an advertisement for a volunteer docent position for the Pioneer Home and thought, “this is a perfect fit! I can still get a little bit of my finger in education and still do something local in my retirement,” said Ryan.

CAMPGROUND Find your campground on pg. 4

Ryan’s training, research and sharing of information among the docents has prepared her for the role, and she feels the best part of being a docent is always learning something new about the home and the area, and being able to share her wealth of knowledge with visitors who are surprised about the immense history. When asked about what type of reactions she gets from visitors, Ryan said, “[people] are stunned. First of all, they can’t believe how beautiful the house is… and some people are just amazed at how much history there is in this area, going back thousands of years,” said Ryan.

Docents provide guests with quality, educational, and enriching experiences by giving educational tours throughout the DuBois House exhibit. Consider becoming a docent at the DuBois House located at DuBois Park in Jupiter! Call PBC Parks Volunteer Services at 561-966-6609 for more information or email parksvol@pbcgov.org.
