Blue Heron Bridge Marine Life Protections Celebrated

The collection and possession of marine life fishery species (species that are collected and managed for the tropical aquarium trade) is now prohibited within Phil Foster Park and surrounding waters, following changes by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The changes are celebrated by the Palm Beach County Parks and

Recreation Department and county officials, and signage indicating the changes has been installed inside Phil Foster Park. The changes maintain highquality snorkeling and diving opportunities and contribute to the conservation of species under the Blue Heron Bridge and Phil Foster Park.

Officials Unveil County’s First Free Life Jacket Loaner Station

On Friday, May 24, Palm Beach County officials, through a partnership with boating safety nonprofit the Sea Tow Foundation, held the grand opening of a new Life Jacket Loaner Station, available to Sunset Lake boaters in Burt Aaronson South County Regional Park. The station is the first of its kind in Palm Beach County.

The station – which is located adjacent to the boat ramp sidewalk –holds life jackets that local boaters may borrow and use, free of charge. Available in sizes ranging from infant to Adult XL, these life jackets help to ensure each of a boat’s passengers have access to necessary safety equipment. Boaters may borrow the life jackets

at no cost and are asked to return them when they are finished so that they are available for others to use. “This will help ensure boaters of all ages have enough proper-fitting life jackets, which will go a long way toward keeping people safe while they’re out enjoying the beautiful Sunset Lake waters,”

said Laurie Schobelock, Aquatics Director. Since 2008, the Sea Tow Foundation has distributed nearly 50,000 life jackets to local businesses and organizations across the country. These stations are placed in locations where boaters will have easy access to the life jackets, such as boat ramps, marinas and parks. AUTUMN 2019

Meet

Oakly

Look for me in future issues of Leisure Times.

The Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department has chosen ‘Oakly’ as the name of its new squirrel mascot, after receiving more than a dozen name submissions from Palm Beach County students as part of its recent Mascot Naming

Contest. The name was submitted by Isaiah Gonzalez. On the morning of July 10, PBC Parks Director Eric Call awarded Gonzalez $25 towards a US Savings Bond and 10 passes to either Calypso Bay or Coconut Cove Waterpark for use during the 2019 season. Oakly is intended to encourage individuals under 18 to live happier, healthier lives by using parks and recreational

facilities in their area, as parks provide opportunities for physical activity and mental wellness. Oakly will be present at department events throughout the year, and visitors are encouraged to interact with Oakly, take photos with the mascot, and include the hashtag, #pbcParks when posting on social media outlets.

Oakly’s character was inspired by Eastern Gray Squirrels that are commonly spotted inside Palm Beach County parks. View the “Introducing Oakly” by visiting our videos page on Facebook.

County Parks Department Wins National Recognition for Three Initiatives The Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department has been recognized with three Achievement Awards from the National Association of Counties (NACo). The awards honor innovative, effective county government programs that strengthen services for residents. The department was recognized for its work on three communityoriented programs. The Parks to Work Program, a program 8

lifting homeless individuals from sleeping in parks to working in parks and being housed with wrap around services. Parks and Recreation, Community Services and other partner agencies work collaboratively to make a difference. Nature Ninja Warrior Program helps teen participants gain experience in outdoor recreation, environmental education and land stewardship careers.

White Tailed Deer

Did you know... White Tailed Deer are the largest North American Deer? Heather Moody, Okeeheelee Nature Center Manager, shares some interesting facts about White Tailed Deer, which can be spotted in a few Palm Beach County parks.

?

?

?

Q

What do White Tailed Deer eat?

A

As herbivores, they eat a variety of plants, grazing on grasses, leaves, fungi and lichen.

Q

What are some of their natural defenses?

A

Since White Tailed Deer tend to “run first, ask questions later when it comes to predators, they usually use speed and agility to escape. They can run up to 30mph and leap as high as 10 feet up and as far as 30 feet out in a single bound. Male deer, or bucks, grow antlers, which can be used for defense when males are fighting each other, or if a predator is attacking.

Q A

Where can we spot White Tailed Deer in Palm Beach County? They are plentiful in natural areas and parks. They are especially present inside Riverbend and Loxahatchee River Battlefield Parks in Jupiter. Pay a visit to Okeeheelee Nature Center, and find a herd living inside a six-acre fenced-in natural compound. Though Nature Center staff provide the deer with food and veterinary care, the deer are still able to live a natural existence inside the park.

Boynton Beach residents Jessica and Sandy Rowley are a mother-daughter duo, who, for the past 25 years, have made a habit out of cleaning up parks and natural areas around the area to ensure a cleaner, safer community. So naturally, when they heard about Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation’s Skip the Straw Day Beach Cleanup on the morning news, they immediately wanted to be a part of the effort.

Every little bit helps, we come here all the time, might as well keep it clean,” said Jessica.

S

On the morning of February 22, roughly a dozen volunteers made their way to Ocean Inlet Park to help rid the popular beach of litter. It was held on National Skip the Straw Day, in an effort to bring attention to the issue of non-degradable litter often found along beaches. The unofficial holiday encourages people to recognize the harmful effects of non-degradable plastic commonly known to contaminate the ocean and harm marine life. Volunteers, like the Rowleys, filled a 33-gallon trash bag with debris from the beach park. Every volunteer received a t-shirt, water, snacks and environmental literature. Pickers, gloves and garbage bags were also supplied.

For the mother-daughter team, the cleanup was important because it helps strengthen their appreciation for nature. “We love getting out in nature and enjoying everything and seeing all the animals… and it’s sad to see garbage everywhere,” said Jessica.

with full-time employment. He boasts a positive attitude and hope for the future.

Crespo credits this optimistic outlook, hard work, and a unique Palm Beach County program for lifting him out of his situation and into employment. Prior to February 2018, current Palm Beach County Maintenance Worker Miguel Crespo made his home inside John Prince Park, a large regional park in Lake Worth. He was homeless and looking for a way out. According to Crespo, he realized he was struggling with homelessness for “too long. Fast forward to 2019, and Crespo has gained a roof over his head, a car to drive, and the consistency that comes 14 2

Crespo was part of the Palm Beach County Parks to Work Program, an effort that combines the forces of the Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department, Community Services, Salvation Army, and other community partners to help individuals who are living in John Prince Park get resources to escape homelessness. As part of the program, participants work inside John Prince Park, doing tasks to help keep the park clean and

beautiful, like picking up litter from popular areas. Crespo completed the six-month program that successfully transitioned him out of homelessness and was able to obtain seasonal, then full-time employment with the department. As of 2019, he’s working on Peanut Island and proudly doing tasks to help keep the island clean. “Sometimes when people ask me, ‘how did it work for you?’ – yes, it did work for me,” Crespo said. Part of the reason it did work, Crespo explained, is because of dedicated PBC Parks staff, like George LaCosta, Director of Parks Operations. LaCosta explained, the program was advertised to homeless individuals in John Prince Park, and Crespo was one of the individuals who constantly expressed interest in the program. Parks to Work was born out of an idea to help homeless individuals living in the park, while providing a way to have them also help beautify the park system. The program will continue to help individuals like Crespo, who’s now looking forward to growing professionally in the department, as well as personally.

Where does Pond Apple grow? Because Pond Apple does not grow well in dry soil, and they need adequate moisture, you can often spot them around the edges of a body of water, like a pond or a lake.

Who can eat the fruit? During the summer when the plant fruits, it provides food for raccoons and other animals that chew on it. Sometimes the tree is called Alligator Apple, because alligators eat the fruit when it drops into the water. You can also make something called “Pond Apple Jelly,” an edible spread that can be consumed by humans. You may also see butterflies nectar on the fruit as a nutrient source.

How does it benefit the environment? Not only does the fruit provide a food source to animals both on and off the tree, but the tree itself can be homes to a variety of animals. Birds, reptiles and insects may live both on and under the tree.

Arts4All Artist Feature

Danielle Consoni Danielle Consoni is an Arts4All – Florida – Palm Beach County participant who has been painting since she was seven years old. Now a flourishing artist in her community, she had her first exhibition in August 2018 with The Cultural Council of Palm Beach County. In April 2019, Consoni had her art displayed in a solo exhibition titled, “My Art at Home,” for Arts4All – Florida – Palm Beach County. Much of Consoni’s art is bright, colorful and shows her true creative passion. Against the obstacles she has faced and overcome, she always returns to painting to heal, focus and lay it all on the canvas. “When I am painting, nobody can distract me, I stay focused and learn fast,” Consoni said. According to her, painting is a distraction, helping her stay calm and relax. According to her mother, Maggie Rebolledo, Consoni has struggled with health issues for much of her life, and painting has helped take her physical and emotional pain away since she was young. “She would come home from school, and she would just start coloring and do her little thing on paper, and I noticed at a very young age, they were beautiful,” Rebolledo explained. Consoni will continue to work on her art and painting – her dream is to be a famous artist, and to see herself on TV one day. Arts4All Florida – Palm Beach County, founded in 1985, is an affiliate of Arts4All Florida and sponsored in part by Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department. The mission of Arts4All Florida – Palm Beach County is to create a society where people with disabilities can learn through, participate in, and enjoy the arts. RETIRED VOLUNTEER FINDS NEW PASSION AT OKEEHEELEE NATURE CENTER As Ed McClure recalled, his journey as an Okeeheelee Nature Center volunteer began innocently enough. In June 2018, he was picking up his mail, and ran into a friend. During his chat, he explained that he’d been feeling “down in the dumps” after his retirement. “I hadn’t been doing much since I moved down here, I was feeling a little empty,” McClure said. Luckily for him, the friend was the wife of another Okeeheelee Nature Center volunteer, who ultimately convinced McClure to put in an application as a volunteer at the Nature Center. Now, McClure said, “I had never owned as much as a dog but all of a sudden, I’m an Outdoor Animal Care Specialist.”

McClure attributes his current success as a volunteer to another ONC volunteer, who showed him the ropes and put him at ease. At the nature center, McClure does tasks like taking care of the animals, greeting visitors and cleaning the trails. He’s also taken on special projects, like caring for the butterfly garden. Though he does a variety of tasks, McClure said he has two favorite parts of volunteering. “The people here are just wonderful, they embrace me, they thank me every day, and I feel like I’m valued,” he said. As far as his day-to-day routine, he particularly enjoys caring for the deer. “I just love them, they come up to me… and some of them will come out and they’ll give me a kiss or a lick,” McClure explained. He added, the deer are like his ‘spirit animal’, and the nature center has allowed him to connect with nature. “It’s better than therapy,” McClure began, “for me, coming here, I come and talk to the animals, I talk to the raptors, the owls, the hawks, I feel like I have a relationship with them.”

McClure was raised in Boston and Though he enjoys the natural worked in the corporate world for environment and peaceful setting 30 years. He worked in the city, that allows him to break away from used the subway, and hardly drove the fast-paced South Florida lifestyle, a car. According to McClure, living McClure recalled a recent interaction in Florida is like living in a different with a visitor that made him truly world, so there were several learning appreciate his volunteer experience. curves when he started as a He recalled, “I’ve met people from volunteer at ONC. “I India, from the UK, Australia… didn’t know if the and Canada, and I say deer… if they’d I didn’t know if the try to be an ambassador bite me, I didn’t and last week I was deer… if they’d bite know if the just sweeping around me, I didn’t know if tortoises were the town center and a dangerous, I the tortoises were woman saw me there was that far dangerous, I was and she said ‘thank you’ away from and I said, ‘yea, I love that far away from reality,” McClure doing it’”. reality” said. The course is a mile-long and includes eight different stations, and participants can travel along the course and stop at each station to complete different exercises along the way. There are areas where participants can stretch, ropeclimb, practice on chin-up bars, and more. In late 2018, the course was improved – new equipment was installed, pathways were widened, and new additions were made.
