Priceless TM

PawPrints Magazine's HOMELESS COVER MODEL Photos by Dick Parrott

SuperPuppy to the rescue! If you are feeling lonely or blue, I will heal you. And if you’re already happy, I’ll make you even happier! There’s just no end to my superpowers. Hi, I’m Planet and I’m the adorable puppy dressed as Superman on the cover. Pictured directly below me on this page are my brothers and sisters: Venus, a girl, is the princess; Jupiter, a girl, is the witch; and Mercury, a boy, is the Punk Rocker. We put on our Halloween outfits a little early this year in the hope someone will be inspired to adopt one of us and take us home! We are precious 8-weekold Lemon Walker Hound puppies who were found in a ditch all by ourselves, with no mom to be found. We LOVE to be held, cuddled and kissed and are in great health. Our spay/neuter surgeries are complete and we’re up to date on our puppy vaccinations. If you’d like to meet us, please call the Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022. You can watch us hop like bunny rabbits around the shelter’s play area, chasing toys and each other. Then you can pick the one that steals your heart! Our thanks go to photographer Dick Parrott for capturing our playful poses. And as for you, if you’d like to live with an entertaining and loveable companion, please call today!

URGENT, URGENT!! My Time Is Running Out!! Are you a compassionate dog lover who would like to rescue a senior sweetheart? I’m praying you are! My name is Martha (A044854) and I have won the hearts of everyone here at Animal Control. I was found as a stray, but I must have once been someone’s beloved companion as I’m such a highly loveable and friendly girl. Even though I’m older in years, I have a playful and joyful spirit. Show me a treat and I’ll bounce on my front legs in anticipation, then sit obediently. Throw me a tennis ball and I’ll chase it, then carry it happily around the room. I am house-trained and I walk wonderfully on a leash. I LOVE taking walks outside with the shelter ladies. I also love to be brushed and behaved like a perfect angel in the tub when they gave me a bath. I’m a Yellow Lab who is up to date on my rabies vaccination. I love dog cookies and have no trouble walking or running around, but a house with fewer stairs would probably be best for me. I LOVE a good doggie bed and I LOVE to be kissed, rubbed and cuddled. Won’t you please give me a home? I’m so deserving - you’ll see that instantly if you come visit me. Call Brunswick County Animal Control at 910-754-8204 and tell them you’re on your way! I am sponsored by in honor of Kizzy Totten, the elder stateswoman of rescued Rhodesian Ridgebacks.

URGENT, URGENT!! I’m Running Out of Time! It makes absolutely no sense that a family dog like me is facing an uncertain future at an animal shelter! I am so comfortable and well-behaved around humans and would fit perfectly into anyone’s home. My name is Buddy (CM3956) and I’m a male Boxer mix who loves attention, walks well on a leash and knows basic commands. In fact, when they came to take my photo, I sat down without even being asked - it was as though I knew exactly what to do. I was found as a stray but it sure seems as though I was part of a family at one time. I get along well with other dogs and love to be cuddled by humans. I have a quiet, laid-back demeanor and beautiful brown eyes that will melt your heart. Please come to the shelter and adopt me!! I need your love NOW. Please call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196. They’ll be happy to give you driving directions or tell you even more! I am sponsored by Kathy Lanio. Thank you!

Visit our website at Hello, I'm Gracie, and as a young kitten, I had to survive on my own out in the woods. That's was pretty tough. Good things started to happen when a nice lady rescued me. I went to the vet and tested negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia, then I got all my vaccinations and was spayed. I found a great foster home and love being here, but I need one more good thing to happen - to find my forever home. I'm a light gray Tabby, approximately 1-year-old and I get along with other cats and dogs. I'm an active, playful kitty, but sometimes I'm a little shy meeting new people. If you adopt me, we'll make good things happen together. Please call Pet Friends of Duplin County at 910-271-3101 to meet me.

“Luke, I am your father.” That’s what I’m hoping to hear you say at my kennel door. I’ll also accept: “Luke, I am your mother.” I’m not picky a new Mommy OR Daddy would be great! My name is Luke (A044072) and I’m a Collie/German Shepherd mix boy who is simply beautiful. I have a gorgeous, fluffy coat and soft brown eyes that melt your heart. I will lay quietly at your feet for head rubs and, when you show me a treat, I’ll sit obediently with no hesitation. I enjoy playing with tennis balls and I walk well on a leash. I play well in the yard and would be an awesome family dog. I’m just 1-year-old, so there are lots of wonderful memories we could begin making! If you think we sound like a great match, call Brunswick County Animal Control at 910-754-8204. See you soon!

EXTREMELY URGENT! I’m Running Out Of Time!! How can my sweet face be running out of time? My name is Rufus (CM3600) and I’m a Bulldog/Mastiff mix boy with a heart that’s simply full of love! I have been living here since April and am already neutered. I can even sit on command and I love to catch treats in my mouth. I have a genuine love for people and enjoy being with them. I just don’t understand how I’ve been overlooked? During my stay at this shelter, I lived in a foster home for a brief time. Here is what my foster mom had to say about me: “Rufus has been out walking, running and SWIMMING with my daughter for the past few weeks. During this time our female Husky has run with him and our 120 pound Pit/Hound mix has been around him. He has NOT exhibited any aggression. He is a WONDERFUL, GENTLE dog." I had a great time with my foster family, but now I’m back at the shelter and time is running out for me. Please, please take a look at my sweet face and come visit me at the shelter. We could have a great life together! Please call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-2793196. They’ll be happy to give you driving directions or tell you even more! I am sponsored by Kathy Lanio. Thank you!

Here I am with my favorite toy, a tennis ball! My name is Tiger Paws (A025419) and I’m a loveable boy who would be an ideal family companion. My tail never stops wagging; I’m so very friendly. As I mentioned, I LOVE balls. I know the word ‘ball’ and will fetch it for you. I also know how to sit and lay down on command. One of my other favorite things to do is roll on my back with my feet in the air - it’s so cute! I walk well on a leash and enjoy going for strolls with the shelter ladies. They say I’m adorable! At just 4-years of age, they think I may be a Norwegian Elkhound or Cattle Dog mix. Oh yes, I’m already neutered and up to date on my rabies vaccination! I really enjoy being rubbed and I take treats ever so gently from your fingers. I came from a home with other dogs so it’s safe to say I get along with my fellow canines. I hope you’ll come meet me! Please give my friends a call at Brunswick County Animal Control at 910-754-8204 and let’s fall in love! I am sponsored by Adam’s Folly Pet Boarding, Bolivia, NC. Thank you!

I’m a bundle of mischief and love called Glow Worm! I will play with anything that moves and am filled with happiness for this thing called life. If you’re looking for someone to brighten your days, I’m your girl! You’ll never guess where I was found before coming to the shelter - a dryer vent! I was stuck, couldn’t move. Maybe that’s why I’m making up for lost time now. The folks at SOAR let me have playtime in the office and I have great adventures here, playing hide and seek and pouncing on toys. When I settle down, I will spend quality time in a human’s lap, enjoying the petting they give me. They tell me I’m quite the character! I am already spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained, so all I’m waiting for at the moment is a family! Won’t you please come meet me? SOAR’s number is 910-457-6340. They can tell you even more about me! I am sponsored by SOAR in loving memory of all their wonderful, furry friends who made it safely to the Rainbow Bridge.

Hello, my name is Sadie! I’m a fun, entertaining and intelligent companion who would make someone so very happy. I’ve been through some sad times myself, so I am eager to be part of a family again. You see, my human mom passed away - she took such great care of me and taught me lots of neat tricks. I can sit on command, shake, beg on my hind feet, and if you point a finger at me and say ‘Bang’, I’ll fall over on my back. I’m an extremely sweet Jack Russell Say ‘Bang’ Terrier mix who is already and I’ll spayed, vaccinated and on fall on my heartworm prevention. I’m also back! house-trained and leash-trained. I am lonely for a human companion and I’m so eager to please. My ideal home would be a quiet one with no cats or small dogs and no children under 5-years-old. As for me, I’m a youngster at just age 3. Come see me! I’m at Pender County Humane Society. If you’d like to learn more, please call 910-259-7022.

I’m Sadie!

I’m a loving, completely nonaggressive Pit Bull girl who never meets a stranger. My smiling face welcomes all the people who greet me! I am spayed, up to date on shots and on heartworm prevention. I’m a beautiful Tortoiseshell kitten named Nayla. I was found as a stray with my sister, Layla. She’s also up for adoption and can be seen on page 12. I was recently in a foster home and found myself happily living with two small doggies, other cats and lots of people, including small children. I love to be loved and will lay on you for hours. We can have some great television viewing nights together! I also enjoy playing with toys - they keep me entertained for a long time. My foster mom says I am a perfect purr baby and she’s sure you’ll love me. I’m just 16-weeks-old and already spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained and, as you can see, from my photo, I enjoy being held! Won’t you meet me? I’m no longer in a foster home and can be seen at Petsmart seven days a week. You can also call Cat Adoption Team at 910-792-9014 for more information. Hope to be greeting you soon! I am sponsored by Adair H. Douglass, II in honor of Chanel and Cheerio.

Adopt-An-ANGEL Please call 910-392-0557 to adopt us! ►My name is Farrah and I’ve had a really rough start. Since I am a Staffordshire Terrier, I am looking for someone experienced with my breed. Since my history is unknown, I am not recommended for a family with other pets or small children. You can tell by my teeth and the condition I was in that my life was rough before I came to Adopt-An-ANGEL. Now, I have fattened up, my coat is shiny, my overall health has improved tremendously and I am blossoming. I am absolutely devoted to you if you just spend some time with me. I walk well on a leash, am house-trained and heartworm negative. If you look closely into my eyes in this picture, you can almost look into my soul and feel my heartache. ◄My name is Sharpie and I am a Sharpei mix. I am very sweet, energetic and devoted to my people. I would do best in a home without other animals since I can be picky and choosy with other animals. I am adorable with all of my folds and wrinkles! It would be wonderful if someone who is familiar with my breed adopted me. Like a Sharpie marker, I am bold, well-defined and I am writing, “PLEASE ADOPT ME!” I’m neutered, up to date with my shots and heartworm negative. ◄Hello! My name is Honey Girl and I am sooo very sweet and playful. I love to have fun and party! I was turned in to Animal Control with a litter of puppies. We went into foster care and all of my babies have now been adopted. I unfortunately tested positive for heartworms, but I have completed my treatment so now I’m as good as new! I am a Pointer, pretty close to being purebred. Look how beautiful I am. I can be energetic so a home with a fenced in yard is a plus. I am great with other dogs and I love kids, too. Come meet me and I will POINT out what a great dog I am and what a great person you will become if you open your life to me.

►My name is Foxy and I am a middle aged, no nonsense kind of girl. I am house-trained and very sweet. I walk well on a leash, am heartworm negative and get along great with cats and dogs. I am not recommended for a home with small kids. I like to lay around and sit by your feet and I would make an awesome companion for a retired couple. I am easy since I am already trained. ◄I am a stunning young lady named Zumba! It fits me so well because I love to play and I play hard. I am little at only around 30 to 35 pounds. I love to just sit beside you for loving (or in your lap if you let me). I have the cutest little ears that naturally fold backwards, and a nub tail! I love to make you happy and I am very smart. I already know my name, as well as Come, Sit, and No. I’m working on Stay and Paw. I love to lay around with you but I also love to go outside and play with other dogs. I get along great with everyone I meet. I am good with cats, dogs, and kids! My favorite activities include: chasing bumble bees, working on training, sleeping on my back, and eating! I am only around a year old and will flourish in any home. I am good on the leash (harness) and on car rides. I would do best in a home with a 6-foot high fence. ►My name is Molly and I am a very, very sweet Labrador girl. I do great with other dogs and was raised with another dog. I am true to my breed - I love playing in water and having fun. I just LOVE people and I love to lean into you for rubs and pets. I am spayed and have all my shots. I am currently undergoing heartworm treatment so if you would like to donate towards my cause, please mail a check to Adopt-An-ANGEL, P.O. Box 15095, Wilmington, NC 28408. Thank you!

Consuela here, hoping you'll be my new best friend! My foster mom says I'm the cutest, sweetest, prettiest, most lowmaintenance Basset you’ll ever meet! Snuggling and snoozing are two of my favorite ways to pass the time. I like to play with other dogs, as long as I don't have to share my food with them. I am rather protective of it when other dogs are around. I love to be the center of attention and would be very happy in a one-dog family. My back legs are a little wobbly, but I can get around very well. I especially like to get on the sofa for a nice cuddle or nap, but when the back door opens and the yard is calling, I'll be glad to hop right on out there. I'll keep a good eye out for squirrels and other critters, but sometimes I get so excited about them that I start digging near the fence to chase them. My ideal home will have a fence that is secure and gap-free so I don't dig my way to China. If you don't have a fence, don't worry - just keep me on my leash and we can track those critters together. Inside my dream home, carpets or rugs on the floor would be ideal - that way I don't slip and slide! Climbing stairs isn't so easy for me, so level surfaces are best also. If you’ve got a soft spot in your heart for Basset Hounds with a special sway to her step, tell Carolina Bassett Hound Rescue that we need to meet! To make me a member of your family please call 919-708-4247 or visit our website at I am sponsored in appreciation of everyone who has rescued a homeless animal.

Brunswick County Animal Services Please call 910-754-8204 to adopt us! ►I’m a precious puppy girl named Kori (A044494) and I’m ready to steal your heart. I was so excited to come into the playroom and have my photo taken. At just 5-months-old, I love everyone I meet. I have a playful and outgoing personality and I really enjoy munching on dog treats. They tell me I’m a red and white Walker Hound. They also tell me I’m so very loveable! I was found as a stray, so I hope you’ll soon be on your way to get me. You’ll be happy you did!

URGENT! My time is running out!

◄If you love fluffy orange cats with soft fur and billowy tails, you’ll love me! Oh, I’m really affectionate and friendly, too! I think you could pretty much say I have it all. My name’s Chantilly (A045181) and I'm a 2year-old girl who would be an excellent friend and companion for some fortunate person. I also have four kittens waiting for homes as well. Come on out and meet me!

▲I’m Martini (A044886), the calico girl kitten on the left, and standing next to me is my sister, Merlot (A044880). She’s a Tortoiseshell. We are babies, just 12-weeks-old, and we were found all by ourselves in the great outdoors after Hurrican Irene blew through. We love to be held, you can tell by the way we purr! We also enjoy playing, napping and eating. Come adopt one or both of us!

What is the world coming to when a beautiful, friendly and affectionate girl like me is running out of time? My name is Boo (A042835) and I’m a 2-year-old Tortoiseshell with an extremely loving heart. I am so happy to meet new people and will stretch my arm out the cage to entice you to notice me. Unfortunately, my efforts haven’t worked! I’ve been here since July 7. Please, please come meet me. I’m such a darling, loveable girl. You’d be so lucky to adopt me! ►Get ready for some fun times and some extra special cuddlin’ if you adopt me! I’m perfectly precious and everyone tells me so! I’m Chase (A044651), a handsome 4-month-old male Terrier mix puppy. I was bunny hoppin’ all over the playroom, making everyone giggle. I love to play and I love to receive attention from humans. There’s not a shy bone in my body. Come get your new best friend today! ►Hey there, I’m Snap (A044727)! I’m a grey and white beauty who can’t understand why I’m in a shelter! Just take a look at my photo - I’m so happy when visitors come visit me and am extremely social. I really love playing with toys, too. Just jingle a ball or wave a string in front of me and I’ll keep you entertained! I’m a very young girl at 2-years-old and I’m hoping to spend the rest of my life with you. Adopt me!

When will it finally be my turn to be adopted? So many of my SOAR friends have found families, but I’m still waiting. My name is Homer and I’m a 6-year-old Hound mix who is eager to please, a good listener, and very intelligent. I’m neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I’m extremely affectionate and would love to be part of an active family who goes on daily walks or outings to the beach or park. I love running and I love agility. Do you have a warm heart, a cozy home and a 6-foot, fencedin yard? Are you experienced with my breed? A confident pack leader is just what I need! Please call SOAR at 910-457-6340 for more information on adopting me.

Hey there, I’m Layla! I’m a bobtail cat, which means instead of a long swishy tail, I have a cute little nubbin. My fur is glossy black and my eyes are gold - I’m a real stunner. I was found as a stray with my sister, Nayla. She’s up for adoption, too, and can be seen on page 8. I’m a happy, friendly girl, just 16-weeks-old, and I LOVE people. Can you tell by the way I’m being held? I’m very laid back and will lay in your lap for hours on end. So if you enjoy cuddling with a kitty while watching TV, I’m your girl! I am used to living with small dogs, other cats and kids. I’m also spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Won’t you please adopt me? Call Cat Adoption Team at 910-792-9014 to find out more. I can also be seen at Petsmart 7 days a week. Let’s meet!

At just 1-year-old, I’m a very friendly girl to other cats and, most of all, humans. I love to be held and I love to play. Come get to know me soon, okay? ►I’m a beautiful Dilute Calico girl named Dutchess. See that kitten in the bottom right corner? That’s my baby girl, Daphne. She and I were rescued by Cat Adoption Team just as we were running out of time at a local shelter. Now we’re looking for loving familes who will make sure we’re safe and happy forever! I’m a 1-year-old darling who gets along great with other cats. I simply ADORE people! I’ll purr my way into your home and heart. ◄Hello! My name is Caddo and I’m a 1-year-old Tabby boy. If you’re looking for a very friendly and social companion, I’m your guy! I love everyone and have a great time playing with toys. I get along well with other felines and would be a superb playmate or cuddle-mate for children. My back leg curls under slightly at the toes, but it doesn’t bother me a bit. I run, walk and play just fine. I’m also neutered, vaccinated, and litterbox-trained!

Wilmington, NC

We’re at Petsmart 7 days a week.

◄You’ve caught me taking a playtime break! I’ve been hopping around after toys for a while now, and I’m a little pooped. My name is Archie and I’m an incredibly adorable 16-week-old male kitten. I have gorgeous orange and white fur and a very friendly personality to boot. You’ll find this hard to believe, but not long ago I was running out of time at Animal Control. Those days are behind me and now I’m ready to make you very happy as a new family member! ►It’s okay if you squeeze this Charmin! See, that’s my name, Charmin. I’m a darling who loves to be held by humans what’s a little squeeze among friends? I’m a 1-year-old girl who gets along great with other cats. In fact, my friend Suzi is also pictured on this page. She and I recently lost our home when our owner could no longer afford to take care of us. We’d love to be adopted together, but separately is ok, too. ◄You could be sharing your life with a precious baby kitten real soon! All you have to do is come visit me Daphne - and fall in love! See the cat on this page named Dutchess? That’s my mom. She and I are looking for wonderful homes. I’m a 16-weekold girl who loves people, toys and other kitties. I will put a smile on your face 24/7. Hurry up and come take me home with you! October 2011 13

Who wants the cutest girl kitten in the whole wide world? If you do, then pick me! My name is Casey and I’m the kind of feline that makes you feel loved each and every day. I will also make you smile and giggle by the way I hop around the room, pouncing on toys and carrying them in my mouth. I’m simply adorable, that’s what everyone tells me. At just 16-weeks-old, I’m already spayed, vaccinated and litter-box trained. My foster mom says I’m a wonderful companion and she wants you to know that I get along great with other cats and even dogs. And, oh yes, I LOVE CUDDLING with my humans! I can’t get enough rubs and hugs. If you’d like to meet me, please call Cat Adoption Team at 910-792-9014. I can also be seen at Petsmart 7 days a week. Come hold me and watch me play!

KNEE-HIGH & PERFECT! That’s me!! My name is Rocky and I had a bit of a rocky start in life. I’m 9months-old and had a home of my very own. My owners surrendered me because I caught a stomach bug and they couldn’t afford to treat it. I really felt awful but the vet took wonderful care of me and now I’m all better. I’m a social and super friendly boy who has never met a stranger. I know how to sit and stay for a treat, I’m leash-trained, I’m obedient off leash, I’m house-trained, I am good with kids and other dogs and I’m crate-trained. They say I’m a mixed breed and that it looks like I might have some Husky in me along with some Shepherd and maybe a dash or two of something with short legs. I’m a calm yet playful guy who is neutered, vaccinated, on heartworm prevention and weighs just 39 pounds. I would like for my new home to have a fenced yard that I can go out and run around in. For more info, call Furever Friends Animal Rescue at 910383-2100 (Monday through Saturday between 8am-6pm).

Cat Tails Please call 910-253-1375 to adopt us! ◄Kate, as you know, is Greek meaning pure, blessed, and popularity. One look at this picture and you can see I meet all the definitions. I am a 4-month-old, female Tabby with a special knack for looking cute! Take me home and we can take great pictures and post them on Facebook. Feel free to get me my own page, too. ►My name is Levy, just like the jeans but it’s spelled with a “Y” but pronounced like an “I”. And just like a good pair of jeans I can be your best friend. I am a beautiful gray, with a “Y”, 4-month-old male kitten. They say I am very affectionate and loving. The nice thing is, I won’t ever need to be washed like those jeans, and I definitely won’t shrink. I’ll probably even get a little bigger!

▲Well, the odds were against us, but we beat that! I am Caramel and I am one of four orange sisters. Only one in one hundred orange cats is a female, so how the heck did our mother have four! We should be in the Guinness book of World Records! Hard to believe none of us have been adopted. So if you need some good luck, we have it. Come adopt one or two of us. We can tell you, you won’t be disappointed.

◄If you’re looking for identical twins, you’ve found them! We are Jaden and Shade. We are 5-monthold, long-haired, black kittens. With the cold weather coming, you could use two lap warmers and we would be the best choice. I’ll stay on your lap, and well, Jaden loves to lay on someone’s feet, so it might as well be yours. It will be spring before you know it! We are healthy, current on vaccinations and have already been to the doctor to be fixed. Please adopt us and you’ll never feel unloved!

◄Oodles of fun and Monty. It really should be Monty of fun as I am the more outgoing one, but me and my best friend, Oodles, are best buddies and really want to be adopted together. I am a 6-year-old seal point Siamese and Oodles is a 4-year-old bluepoint. Our owner recently passed away and we found ourselves back at the shelter. We look forward to going to our new home soon, so please let us become part of your family. Adopt us today!

Hi, my name is Lola and I am a 4-yearold Shepherd/Lab mix who has an old cruciate ligament tear that requires me to remain on glucosamine for my lifetime. The injury was too old to be surgically repaired. I am a sweet-loving gal, but I don't always get along with some other dogs. I generally get along well with docile male dogs. I am in a wonLola derful foster home with Sunburst Foundation, but I really want a home and family of my own. Well, recently, along came sweet Hero. Hero was originally shy with people but once his extensive medical issues were taken care of (which included heartworm disease and several decayed teeth) he has become your "new best friend." And he is also a "canine best friend" to ME. But of Hero course, he is smart and lets me be the boss. We like to run and play in the yard and Hero is respectful of my space and is not too pushy with me. I would love for me and my "best bud " to be adopted together if possible. Hero is around 2-years-old and thought to be a Golden/Chow mix. Both of us are crate-trained, house-trained, up to date and will come with a microchip and Smart ID tag from Best Friends. Please contact Sunburst Foundation for a "Meet & Greet" with two beautiful adult dogs, me and Hero. Call 910-622-0011 or go to our website and fill out an adoption application. The website address is: We are sponsored by Hank and Grace Harrington.

New Hanover County Animal Control Services Please call 910-798-7500 to adopt us! ◄My name is Marley (A260656) and I’m a 2-year-old Yellow Lab with a heart of gold. Animal Control picked me up as a stray and I had been running loose on Market Street. I’m a very handsome boy who is eager to please and I have a great love of toys. Please come out and adopt me. I will make a wonderful companion to any animal loving family.

►I truly deserve to be someone’s princess. My name is Mimi (A260731) and I’m a 2-year-old Pastel Tortie with big, beautiful eyes. I was straying in Downtown Wilmington and fortunately for me, Animal Control rescued me from the streets. I really enjoy being petted, I crave feeling loved and I’m already spayed. Any chance you could save my life by adopting me and making me part of your family? It would mean the world to me.

◄If there are any true animal lovers out there, I need to have a talk with you. My owner has cancer and had to surrender me to the shelter because she could no longer care for me. I would love the chance to make her proud by giving my love to another family. My name is Sneakers (A260863) and I’m a 10-year-old, neutered boy. I’m litter-trained, good with kids of all ages, and good with both dogs and cats! I’m handsome, friendly, social and a genuine Lap Cat. I enjoy sleeping in your lap and being rubbed and I just want a chance to show you how much love I have to give.

►Hey! Look people! This is getting a bit ridiculous. Here it is October and I’ve been here at the shelter looking for a new home since July! What’s up with that? I’m a very sweet girl who is playful and loving. I enjoy kitty toys and kitty treats. My name is Girlie (A259298) and my owner surrendered me to the shelter because she was moving to a place where I wasn’t allowed. I’ve already been spayed, I’m 1-year-old, I’m litter-trained and I’ve lived with cats. Adopt me now!

◄I may look like any ordinary mixed breed dog but I’m still unique. My name is Olive (A260275) and I have a heart like no other, a passion for life like you wouldn’t believe, and I can make you smile at the drop of a hat. At 7-months of age, I’m still a playful puppy and ready for a long, adventure filled life with you. I know how to sit for a treat, I have a joyful soul and I’m ready to make you feel loved!

◄You wanna know what blows? A hurricane. You wanna know what else blows? Being temporarily sheltered by Animal Control during hurricane Irene only to have your owner decide to not return to pick you up. My name is Sally (A260800) and I desperately need a new home with a family who will never consider me to be disposable. I’m a 4-year-old Labrador Retriever and Rottweiler mix. I’m a very sweet girl who likes to lay on the floor by your feet. I’m good with kids and other dogs and I can sit on command. I do find shelter life worrisome. Maybe it’s my growing sadness as each day passes by and I still sit here alone. I need someone to heal my broken heart.

Come see why I’m the perfect girl for you! ►You can not look away, you will come adopt me! My name is Java and I hope my steady gaze convinces you that I should be yours. After all, I’m an awesome girl! At just 5-years-old, I’m a Spot perfect family companion. I love to sleep in bed with my humans so you’ll never be lonely or cold at night. I’m already spayed, vaccinated and trained in the litterbox. (In fact, I have a litterbox that comes with me when I’m adopted.) I get along great with other cats and I’ve behaved just fine around cat-friendly dogs. Come meet me today - I promise to be the feline of your dreams! ◄Not too long ago, I wandered up to someone’s house, as lost and alone as could be. They saw what a great girl I was so they made sure to take me in and get me to the Humane Society so that I could be adopted into a loving home. My name is Callie and I’m an 8-month-old, 8 pound Tortoiseshell who dearly loves to be petted. Humans are my favorite species - can’t get enough of them! I am spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. All I need now is for you to bring me home with you!

Please call about our low cost spay/neuter program.

910-763-6692 ►I’m a darling girl named Sadie! My story started out kind of sad, but lots of good people looked after me, and I’m sure the next good person I meet will be you! My former owner was evicted and left me alone to fend for myself. I was skin and bones when Animal Control rescued me. I went to a foster home where I regained my health and happiness. Just listen to what a great girl I am! I’m house-trained and I do not get up on furniture. I sit and shake on command and I walk on a leash like a dream. I love playing in the water, especially with other dogs. I have learned to stay in a crate because that is where I was fed at my foster home. A crate is now a safe place for me to feel secure. I am such a very sweet girl and I love to be touched and petted. I’ll give you loving licks and kisses in return. I’m a 2-year-old Pointer mix, already spayed, up to date on shots and on heartworm prevention. Let’s go!

7656 A-B Market Street - Wilmington, NC 28411 Howdy, my name is Ernie and I would love to have a forever family. Someone found me living under a bridge in Riegelwood and I was scared and starving. My rescuer brought me here to Furever Friends so that I could be fully vetted and placed up for adoption. I am heartworm negative and on prevention, I’ve been neutered and vaccinated, and I’m ready to go home today! I’m good on a leash, I’m wonderful with other dogs, and I’m a goofy Hound who is 9-months-old. I weigh 36 pounds and still need to put on a few more. Also, I do have a little hair loss but no worries. It’s not because of mites because I don’t have any of those, so I believe it’s due to lack of food and poor nutrition. You could say that I’m eating my way back to furriness. For more info, please call Furever Friends Animal Rescue at 910-3832100 (Monday through Saturday between 8am-6pm).

The first thing you might notice about me are my striking blue eyes. That’s how I got my name, Newman! (Named after Paul Newman, of course. He’s almost as handsome as me.) I’m an adorable little boy with a mystery parentage. I have the short body of a Corgi and the coat of a Spaniel so we’re going with that. Yes, I’d say I’m the perfect size. Not too big or small. I’m a true charmer who loves meeting new people and I’m so very friendly and affectionate. And or course, I’m already neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I’d be a great family dog so please hurry on over and let’s get acquainted. Call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022 so you can gaze into these gorgeous blue eyes in person!

◄I’m Beau, a sweet and handsome 60pound Hound in need of a new family! I was part of a litter of twelve puppies that was adopted out four years ago. Sadly, my owner became very ill and could no longer keep me. The good news is that I have perfect house manners and am well behaved! I walk nicely on a leash, am housetrained, can sit for a cookie, and I get along well with other dogs and human children. I am even used to sleeping in bed with my family, if it’s allowed. In Loving Memory of Sandy 12/15/95 - 8/24/11 (age 15 years, 9 months) Beloved Pet of Kevin, Jill and Haiden Jones Sandy Jones was born in December of 1995. She was turned in to New Hanover County Animal Control (AC 015976) when she was 10-months-old and we are not sure why. She sat in the back of her cage, overlooked, a big black 60 pound dog who no one adopted. My husband, Kevin, went to the shelter to adopt a dog after buying our first home. I told him to get whatever he wanted, that I would love it no matter what. He went back for several visits over a week's time and finally brought me in to adopt the one he had "chosen." Little did we know that this dog would come to mean so much to us over the years. Initially, Sandy suffered from extreme separation anxiety, a fear of abandonment common to shelter dogs traumatized by being abandoned by their owners. When we left her alone, she ate chunks out of our couch cushions (that had to be specially ordered to replace), venetian blinds, chewed door and window casings, but it slowly improved over time. Now, Sandy has been described as noble, majestic, well-balanced and the most stable dog who ever lived by people who knew her. We never had to teach her anything, yet she was completely under voice command and completely DEVOTED to us. She was there when my son, Haiden, was born in 1999. Haiden grew up with Sandy always being there in the background, undemanding, but comforting. Sandy was so gentle she helped raise orphan kittens, and stray cats and countless others who stayed with us over the years. Instead of getting a companion dog for Sandy we used the spot to foster homeless dogs. Sandy mentored and helped to foster hundreds of homeless dogs with Adopt-An-ANGEL over the years. In fact, Sandy was such a great pet that she turned this family into such animal lovers that she helped spark the birth of Adopt-AnANGEL. She was so stable that she helped bring balance to many dogs who were out of balance. She was the dog we tested other dogs with and other dogs against because she never had an ounce of aggression. She was a teacher at heart and she taught many, many homeless dogs how to be a pet, and they all went on to be adopted. She even helped Sammy, another dog who also suffered from separation anxiety after he was adopted. He visited Sandy 5 days a week for a whole year until he got over it. In Sandy's later years, we moved and she became the greeter dog at Adam's Folly boarding facility that we own in Bolivia. She greeted customers in the office and brought peace and balance to their dogs left behind. Once again, even paying customers requested their dogs stay with Sandy while they were away. Like when China died, Angel came and always stayed with Sandy. So did Cameron and many, many others. Even as a senior dog, Sandy continued to fulfill her mission of helping others. Sandy is survived by Kevin, Jill, Haiden and Tweety, Midnight, Benji (the dogs) and Larry, Ozzie, Sophie, and Jake (the cats). In honor of Sandy, please adopt a homeless shelter pet. Choose one that might not be your first choice. Look at the black ones and look at the ones who sit in the back of the cage. And if you do, don't give up on it too soon if it destroys your house from separation anxiety. That's the sign of an emotional pet who will become so devoted and emotionally attached to you if you give it time and patience. If I had returned Sandy back then, I would have missed out on loving this wonderful dog for almost 15-years of my life, and my life quite honestly may have turned out much differently than it did. Shortly before she died, I picked up a plaque that hangs in my office. It says, "A shelter dog rescued this family." And she did.

NOW OPEN - 9am to 4pm on Saturdays!

I was picked up as a stray. Won’t you come to the shelter and meet me?

I’m a tiny girl named Sabrina and I’m sad to say that I’ve been returned to the shelter after being part of a loving family for years. My senior citizen Mom had to move and couldn’t take me with her. Won’t you adopt me? ◄Not long ago, I was sleeping with a little girl who loved me very much. I was so happy. Then she started getting sick and the doctor said she had an allergy to cats. I’m such a sweet and loving boy, and I’d be great with kids, obviously. Won’t you give me another chance as a family cat? I’ll make you glad you did.

Hey Y’all! Please let me introduce myself. I’m Cletus, a handsome mix of American Bulldog and Akita. My foster mom loves my squishy Akita face, and dad likes all the rest of me. I’m about 3-years-old and weigh in at 85 pounds. The vet said I am healthy, don’t have any parasites including those nasty heartworms, and mom’s been keeping me up on the meds and flea control products. She also makes me eat healthy, but dad still sneaks in cookies. I like that a lot! Oh, and mom got me neutered too. But that’s okay, I got lots of treats that day. I’m having a lot of fun at my foster home - they have other dogs and lots of company with kids coming over all the time. I love all of it! I am extra good in the house and never tear anything up or have accidents. If you let me I’ll climb right up in your lap. And at suppertime I sit and drop on a dime. I don’t mind sharing food with the other dogs here either. They share all their toys and we have a good time. So now I would really like a home where I could live forever. I would devote myself to you and your family if you have one. My mom says I am an awesome dog and she thinks I would be happy either with a single person or a family. I would like a fenced yard for fetching Frisbees and basketballs. So that’s most of my story, if you would like to meet me and learn more, you can email my mom at or call 910-471-0691.

SOAR (Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue) Please call 910-457-6340 to adopt us! ◄Need a buddy? My name is Baby and I’d love to be your new family member! I’m a 3-year-old, spayed female Lab mix who gets along with everyone: men, women and children. I also play well with other dogs. I came from Animal Control, but I appear to be housetrained, as I don’t want to answer nature’s call in my kennel. I always try to wait for someone to let me out first. I’m friendly, playful and enjoy going for walks. I hope you’ll come visit me! ►A tisket, a tasket, two kittens in a basket! We are CT and Bootsy, two sisters with the best personalities around! You see, we were found at just 2-weeks-old and bottlefed by our foster mom. Being bottlefed made us extremely comfortable with humans and we just can’t get enough cuddles and kisses. We are lap cats, that is for sure. We are 12weeks-old now and ready for homes. Our sister, Gigi, is also ready. We are used to living with a big dog and other cats and we’re already spayed, vaccinated and litterboxtrained. Call our SOAR foster mom at 910-278-4437. ►I’m a sweetheart named Ruby! I was found as a stray and the people who rescued me posted flyers but had no luck finding my former home. They fell in love with me, but both worked long hours. That means I could be yours! I’m a very loving, friendly girl who gets along with other dogs and also cats. I am doing great with basic commands and crate-training. Oh, I’m also spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. Come meet me today and see why I should be yours.

◄I’m Tippy, a female Tortoiseshell kitten who is searching for a loving home. Someone abandoned me at a local car wash, but kind folks found me and got me to a terrific foster home where I am being well taken care of. I’m getting along great with the other cats and big dog that live here and I’m just 4-months-old. I’m already spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained and I’m quite beautiful! My tail has an orange tip. If you’d like to meet me, please call my SOAR foster mom at 910-278-4437 and arrange a visit! ►Hello there! We’re Georgie, Gemma and Gina, three baby kittens in need of loving homes! We are bottlefed babies which means that we are very used to being held and cuddled by humans. We love to watch TV with you and will follow you from room to room. Some of our other favorite things to do are playing, napping and eating! If you’d like to meet us and cuddle, call our SOAR foster mom at 910-278-7901. ►I’ve been at SOAR for a year! When will my new family walk up to my kennel door? I’m Grunt, a 2-year-old male Lab mix with a friendly and playful personality. I know how to sit and stay on command and I just love it when volunteers take me for walks. I’m very good on a leash and I also enjoy playing with tennis balls. A house with no other dogs is fine, but if there are dogs, I'd be happiest in a home with a female or one who is smaller than me. If there are kids around, ages 10 and up would be best. I’m already neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention.

My name is Meg and I am another Border Collie who had run out of time at Animal Control. I was there for a few weeks and the staff was happy to see me find a new foster home. They all came out to see me off and wish me luck. I have begun heartworm treatment and I have a few more visits to the vet. Then I’ll be able to do what I enjoy most - making new friends and playing with other dogs. I love children, going for walks, going for rides in the car and playing with toys. I am about 2-years-old, am crate trained and my foster mom says my goal is to get love from humans. Well, in my opinion, it sure beats herding sheep! If you are interested in me or other Border Collies, please visit the Carolina Border Collie website at or call 843-903-5707. I am sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting Insurance Agency in honor of Luna.

HAWAIIAN Print AUTO SEATCOVERS Great For Furry Friends!

Hello! My name is Roxy and I’m a 1½year-old Pitbull and Boston Terrier mix who is medium sized. I love kids and I would love another dog to play with in a fenced yard. My previous owners had to give me up because they have no fence and I ended up at the shelter on several occasions. The shelter people are super nice but I’ve overstayed my welcome and am now looking for a nice safe home. I’m a carefree, fun-loving girl who loves to ride in cars. I am crate-trained and do not mind spending time in one. My foster mom says I’m a really great gal who bonds quickly with those who care for me and I get along with all the other pets in the household. I have already been spayed and I’m current on vaccinations, too! To find out more about me or to adopt me, please grab your phone and call Mary at 910-262-3519 or Holly at 361-739-5383. I am sponsored by SignBiz. Thank you!

Sunburst Foundation of Wilmington Please call 910-622-0011 or email to adopt us! ◄I’m a sweet, young, male Akita/Chow mix named Ted. I am a quiet but active dog and I’ve behaved well around other dogs. I just ADORE people! I’m also very smart and will go far with basic obedience. Oh yes, I’m also neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I’d do best with someone experienced with the Akita breed. If you’re that kind of person, please call!

◄Hi, my name is Blondie! I’m a sweet girl who appears to be mixed between an Eskimo Dog and a Yellow Lab. Aren’t I beautiful? I weigh 45 pounds and am housetrained and crate-trained. I’m good with other dogs, too! At just 5-years-old, I’m spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I’m a bit shy, but obedience training will help my selfconfidence. I have been diagnosed with epilepsy and will need to stay on medication for my lifetime, but please don’t let that stop you from adopting me! It’s relatively inexpensive and helps me so much. Please adopt me!

$5 can help save the life of a homeless canine. Please buy/sell Belk Charity Day tickets. Event is Saturday, November 5. Contact for more info. ◄I’m Rosie! I’m a mediumsized Pug/Spitz mix and, at just 4-years-old, I’m a smart, friendly girl who would be a great agility dog. I adore children and am friendly to adult humans as well! I do have issues with some dogs, but I’m great with cats. I’ve been working with an obedience trainer and would love to continue this training with my new family. I’m also spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. You’d be so lucky to share your life with a great girl like me! ◄Hi there, my name is Coal, and I’m on the search for a wonderful family, one that preferably has another dog. I’m an 8-year-old male Black Lab mix with a very loving personality. I am house-trained, obedient and eager to please. I love going for walks, playing with children above the age of six and I have also lived harmoniously with a cat. I would be a great companion for anyone! As for my health, I am neutered, up to date on vaccinations and on heartworm prevention. I have great house manners and am a social, friendly boy.

◄Hi, my name is Remington! I’m a 2-yearold male Irish Setter mix, and I have to say that I’m a very sweet boy. I’m great with people and I do well with most other dogs (but cats I like to chase). I am house-trained and will be a wonderful companion for an active family. I love to explore in the woods, so if you’re a hiker we’d be a great match! I’m very smart, leash-trained and in great health. Take me home! ►My name is Truen! I’m an 18-month-old American Pit Bull Terrier. I was found tied to a pole and ended up at Animal Control. Fortunately, some wonderful rescue angels swooped down and whisked me off to a wonderful foster home. Now I am slowly being introduced to other dogs. I seem to do ok with females but am not as comfortable around other male dogs yet. I am on heartworm prevention, vaccinated, neutered, and love my people. I would be a lap dog if you let me. I am a quick learner and wait until I am invited to hop on the couch. My weight is somewhere around 50 pounds. Please visit the website: to fill out a preliminary form. My adoption will include a vet reference and home visit. I am looking forward to my session with the trainer Amy Van Dyne coming up. I am working on becoming a balanced canine. The total package.

Talk about being cute for a living! My name is Fender and I’m incredibly cute, if I do say so myself. I’m a 3-year-old, fluffy, scruffy, 14 pound Jack Russell Terrier and Shih Tzu mix. I was surrendered to Furever Friends by my owners when they could no longer care for me. A new baby put a strain on the finances and I had to move out. I am good with kids and other dogs, I’m crate-trained, I’m leash-trained, and I’m learning all kinds of commands. I have been neutered, vaccinated, tested negative for heartworms and am on monthly prevention. When I first got here, I was in a lot of pain because I had a bladder stone that was stuck in the worst possible place! Ouch! The doctor removed it for me and is having it tested to determine what caused its formation. Once that is determined, I can adjust my diet to prevent them in the future. If you want to add someone special to your life, please adopt me. For more info, please call Furever Friends Animal Rescue at 910-383-2100 (Monday through Saturday between 8am-6pm).

Hi there! My name is Little and I sure have had a rough couple of years. I have been a stray, been treated for heartworms, had surgery to remove a non-cancerous tumor, and was even hit by a car. Luckily, I have survived it all and I am a healthy, happy 7 to 8-year-old Jack Russell girl who is just looking for a loving home. They say I am very sweet and well-behaved. I love people, especially kids. I am good with other dogs once I get to know them. I can be a little bossy when I first meet them so I am better with submissive dogs. I am also good with cats. I really need a home with a fenced yard because I love to run and play and explore the yard. I am very calm and well behaved in the house though. I am a petite girl weighing only about 15 pounds. I am spayed, up to date on shots, on heartworm prevention, and microchipped. I would love to find a person or a family of my own. If you think I might be the right dog for you, please contact the folks at Dal Pals at 910-575-3141 or email

I am sponsored by PawPrints Magazine in loving memory of Sandy, beloved pet of Kevin, Jill and Haiden Jones.

I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you!

Shelter News & Events Donations Needed for Rescued Dogs Undergoing Heartworm Treatment

Save The Date: SOAR’s Harvest Fest

Currently, Adopt-An-ANGEL (AAA) has several dogs undergoing heartworm treatment at the same time! Even at non-profit discounted rates, the treatment runs between $250-500 per dog depending on each dog’s weight. With multiple dogs going through treatment at the same time, the total cost needed rises in the thousands, which is disastrous for a small rescue. If a lot of people help a little, the expense will be much more manageable. If you would like to pitch in, please mail checks to: Adopt-An-ANGEL, P.O. Box 15095, Wilmington, NC 28408 or visit the website at Vet bills are online for you to review at "our vet bills" under the "about us" tab. Call 910392-0557 for other questions.

Miss Avis Davis, 1990-2005

My name is Rocko and I am soooo incredibly loving and friendly. I just want to be with my people as much as I can possibly be. I was adopted as a puppy and recently returned at 2-years of age because I didn't get along with the other resident dog. I am best suited in a home without another dog. I am devoted to my owner and would love to get a home with someone who is home a lot! I am neutered with all my shots and have been well cared for my entire life. I am also heartworm negative. I really would live only for you if you if you adopted me. I am absolutely heartbroken about losing my home and my family. If you would like to know more information about me or to inquire about the adoption process, please call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557.

Hello! My name is Cooper and I am a black Labrador Retriever mix. I am super playful and I ought to be! I was at Animal Control for over 2-months and I ran out of time. Too many other homeless animals kept getting turned in and they had to make room to give another dog a chance. It was my lucky day though because Adopt-An-ANGEL had a spot open and Animal Control relocated me to them. PHEW! So now, I am partying like it’s 1999! I am great with other dogs, but I play hard, tough and rough. If you have another dog who you need to wear out, look me up because I bet I could wear him out. If you don’t have a dog, that’s ok, too. I am friendly and fun with people, too. I am neutered, up to date with shots, heartworm negative and only around 1-year-old. Basically, I have some puppy left in me. To adopt me, please call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557.

Do you have extra time and love to spare? I’m Oakley, an undeniably sweet, smart, alert girl, but I tend to be extremely shy in the beginning. My special need is having a special person (or couple) to become my hero, someone with patience and the time to train me and to let me know my "job" is to have fun and be part of the family. I need positive reinforcement, gentle guidance and TLC to help me come out of my shell. I am a Lab/Shepherd mix, already house-trained and good with other dogs. I respond well on a leash and, once I have your trust, I will listen and obey when off leash. I would make a great exercise partner as I am very athletic. For more information, call Paw’s Place at 910-845-PAWS (910-845-7297). We’re open daily 9-Noon. I am sponsored by Hank and Grace Harrington. Thank you!

My name is Lily and I am fantastic! I do great with other dogs, kids and probably cats, too. I am very calm, easygoing and settled. I walk well on a leash, hardly bark, am housetrained and actually would make the perfect family pet. I was turned in to Animal Control in July with another dog, and together we were overlooked and ran out of time. We do not have to be adopted together, but I am used to having another dog around. I am spayed and heartworm negative! If you would like to know more about me or to inquire about the adoption process, please call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557. I am sponsored by Netop and Ruby. Thank you!

Please Help! Proceeds will benefit local humane societies.

Various Local Rescues We are all from different Animal Rescues. Please read our stories! CAPE FEAR RESCUE LEAGUE My name is Pepper and I'm a Dalmatian mix who is approximately 2-years-old. I was found with five pups and had been left to die. The nice lady who found me and my pups took us in. She took care of us until we could get into a foster home. All my pups were adopted and I went into the "New Leash On Life" Prison Program at Bladen County Correctional Facility. While I was there, I learned basic commands and now I'm looking for my furever home. I love to run and play, I have a lot of energy and I would love to have a fenced yard to play in. I get along with other dogs, I love children and I'll be a wonderful friend to you. I’m spayed, vaccinated, heartworm free and on prevention. I am already crate-trained and included with my adoption is a large bag of food and 6-month supply of heartworm pills. If you would like to meet me, please contact Pat with Cape Fear Rescue League by calling 910-640-1505 or emailing

OPERATION TOPCAT My name is Celeste and my babies and I were saved by Operation Topcat. I'm a sweet girl who has been a wonderful mom. My babies are on their own so now I'm ready for my forever safe loving home. I'm a pretty girl who is mostly white with some orange and black spots and my fur is very soft. You'll just want to let me sit with you so you can pet me. I really like to be petted and loved on. After I get to know you well, I will roll on my back and let you rub my belly. Maybe you would like to take me home? I might be a bit shy and reserved at first but with some patience, I will come to trust you and we will be best friends. I would prefer a quiet place. Do you have room in your heart for a gal that was turned in to Animal Control where I promptly had my babies? Thank heavens that Topcat came along and saved me. To adopt me, please email or call 910 200-0612. To see other kitties up for adoption and looking for love, please visit us online at

PENDER ENDANGERED ANIMAL RESCUE Hello, my name is Valentine, and I was featured several months ago. I’m now ready for a HOME! I’m a very loving Staffordshire who is in great health. You might remember from my last appearance that I had severe damage to my front paw after an attack, but the vet has repaired it and I am doing great! I will have a limp, however. I really do love kisses and hugs and walks, and if you met me you'd see how loving I am. I’m hoping I’ll soon find a wonderful home and family. If you’re interested in me, please contact the rescue at or call 910-675-0867.

PET FRIENDS OF DUPLIN COUNTY My name is Dixie and as you can see by my picture, I'm getting a little belly rub and loving it!! I wish I had a family who could give me belly rubs all the time. Here's my story: I was rescued just before my time ran out and then I was treated for heartworms. I'm a sweet girl, even though I may be a little shy when I first meet you. I'm vaccinated and have been spayed. I get along with other dogs, but get a little excited around cats. I'm about 2-years-old and they tell me I'm a Labrador and Bulldog mix, but I don't think they know for sure. My coat is a combination of black and brown and I have white on my face, chest and feet. If you can give me a loving home and those great belly rubs, call 910-271-3101.

Various Local Rescues We are all from different Animal Rescues. Please read our stories! ONSLOW PARTNERS FOR ANIMAL WELFARE

My name is Stella Rose and I am a very sweet girl. I’ve had a tough life after being abandoned by my owners. I could not find food to eat, so sometimes I just ate dirt. I was eventually picked up by Animal Control who took me to a very overcrowded shelter where I was put in a kennel with lots of other dogs. The shelter saw what a wonderful dog I was and had written the words “I love this dog” next to my picture. When a nice lady who does a lot of rescue work saw my picture and heard my story, she came and rescued me the day before they were going to have to put me to sleep. I was very lucky. This lady has had me for 3-months but she lives in an apartment and thinks because of all my energy, my long legs, and my playfulness that I would be better off in a home. Preferably one where there is lots of land to run on and maybe other dogs to play with. I love all animals and most people. The nice lady who I’m fostered by has helped me get over some of my fears, but I still find large noisy objects kind of scary. If you have lots of land, and want a forever dog with lots of energy, I am the girl for you! Please call 484-883-3552 to adopt me. You may also visit for more information and to see other animals looking for love.

Hello! My name is Moreya and I am a Congo African grey. I am a very friendly and well adjusted bird or so I have been told! I love to talk and whistle. My favorite treat is an almond in the shell and I will work very hard to get them out of my foraging toys! My current foster parents are expecting a new baby and feel they are unable to continue caring for me. I urgently need a new temporary foster home (or long term home!) with someone who appreciates the intelligence and humor of African greys. Won't you consider allowing me to join your family? To foster me, or to foster or adopt another of the many parrots who are awaiting homes, please contact Phoenix Landing at (click on the link for adoption/foster), call 866-749-5634 or send an email to Please also check our website for current information on free classes in Wilmington, Jacksonville and Cary.

PAWSITIVE PARTNERS PRISON PROGRAM I’m a Dallas Cowboy fan so that’s how I got my name… Cowboy. I’m part of the new group of shelter dogs entered in the training program at the Pender County Prison with Monty’s Home. I’m really skinny right now (you can actually see my hip bones in this photo) and I have some nasty infections but they are feeding me really well and I have medicine that will put me back on the playing field real soon. I’m a 2-year-old, male Pointer mix. I’m really low-key and have one blue eye which makes me very special. I do hope you have room on your team for me. I will make a great buddy to sit on your couch and watch the games with this fall. Call my ‘agent’ Monica if you want to find out more about me...her number is 910-297-1338 or you can email her at Better yet, fill out an application at and I’ll be yours by your next tailgate party! By the way, if you’re not really a Cowboy fan, check out the other four NFL team dogs on our website.

Hi, my name is Moo Moo and I have a sad look on my face because I’ve had such a rough start in life. My owner kept me in a pen for seven whole years! Fortunately, a neighbor was able to convince my owner to relinquish me and I’ve found my way here to Furever Friends for a second chance. I am timid, overwhelmed and very sad but I’m also optimistic that I’ll finally know what true love is. I have shown no aggression to humans or other dogs. For the first time, I am learning what air conditioning is and I like it! At night I sleep in a kennel, but during the day I get to hang out in Dr. Hanby’s office. I have already been neutered and vaccinated. I did test positive for heartworms and will begin treatment soon at no additional cost to my adoptive family. I’m good on leash and I’m ready to be adopted. If you are a patient and loving person, please call Furever Friends Animal Rescue at 910-383-2100 (Monday through Saturday between 8am-6pm).

I’m a great family dog named Baxter! Sadly, my owners moved away and couldn’t take me with them. This could be your lucky day, though, because I’d be such a great companion! I’m a 28pound Beagle boy who is already house-trained and leash-trained. I know how to sit on command and can do a few other tricks. (My photo shows you how nicely I beg for a treat.) At just 4-years-old, I’m already neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I enjoy playing with children and am a very sweet, affectionate boy. I love going for walks and would greatly appreciate the exercise as I could stand to lose just a few pounds. If you’d like to share your life with a friendly sweetheart like me, please call Paw’s Place at 910-845-7297 and let’s get together! I am sponsored by Marybeth and Elliott Tepper in loving memory of Charleston and Scarlet, who loved all their sisters and brothers. We all miss you so much. Bobby Jean & Woody

I’m Cutter, a 1-yearold male Schnauzer/ Poodle mix. I have already had a lonely start in life. I was picked up off the streets as a stray in pretty bad condition but all that is over now and I am looking for a happy new life! The vet estimated me to still be a baby and no older than 1½ years. I am 15 pounds and still full of that puppy play. I am house-trained, crate-trained and good with other dogs. I need an active home that will take me on walks and play with me in the yard. If you are looking for a playful, handsome young pup, then please visit There you can fill out an application online and view other adoptable rescues. If you need an application mailed or faxed to you, please call 910-264-8300 to have one sent. I am sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting Insurance Agency in honor of Molly.

Breed Rescues We are all from different Breed Rescues. Please read our stories! SHAR-PEI RESCUE OF VIRGINIA

Hi, I‘m Rocky! I‘m a 10-month-old Shar-Pei mix available for adoption from Shar-Pei Rescue of Virginia. I am a friendly, playful boy and very cute, too. I‘m a very active pup and do well with other dogs. I would do well in a home with another dog who I can play with and chase around. I have been in my foster home for 2-months now, and I am doing great. I’m already house-trained and crate-trained. They are teaching me LOTS of new things here because I am so smart. The big guy has already taught me how to sit and shake. When I do what he asks, he gives me treats. My mommy takes me for long walks that last about three miles and she tells me when to “wait” for the cars before we cross the street. She has shown me that things along the way are not scary either. I really like my walks! Are you looking for a walking partner or a fun-loving friend for your dog? Well then, look no further, I am your guy! To learn more about me or fill out an application, please check out my profile on the rescue’s website at You can also call 609-494-0020 or email for more information. Hope to see you soon!

I’m Abbigail! I'm a 5-year-old Dane mix weighing in at a trim 70 pounds. Knowing sit, lay, come and shake are just small examples of how intelligent I am. Going for walks in the neighborhood is such a thrill. Walking with grace and heeling wonderfully, I draw the attention of everyone. I can fit into any home no matter the occupants. Kids, dogs and cats are all my friends. I currently live with a feline sister, and have no issue with indoor or outdoor cats. Being a lover and a Velcro Dane, I make a great companion. I don't have a high interest in toys and would much rather be petted and loved on. I am crate-trained as well as house-trained. Your counters are safe with food as I don't surf for human treats. I would be a wonderful addition to any style of family or home. For more info, please call Terri at 252-566-8934 or visit

SCHNAUZER RESCUE OF THE CAROLINAS I’m Max, a 1-yearold black male giant Schnauzer who weighs 73 pounds. Unfortunately, I ended up at Animal Control because I grew out of that small puppy stage and my family decided I was too big. We Giants are large working breed dogs so it’s best that our owners know a little bit about our breed. We are highly intelligent and are very devoted to our humans. I’m now in a foster home and am a growing boy who loves exercise and loves to learn new things! If you have the time and love to show me, please visit There you can fill out an application online and view other adoptable rescues. If you need an application mailed or faxed to you, please call 910-264-8300 to have one sent.

AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD RESCUE My name is Sydney! I’m a beautiful, 1year-old Australian Shepherd and Border Collie Mix. I was purchased from a breeder who told my old owner that I was purebred. My old owner found out I was deaf and my breeder wouldn’t take me back, so I was turned over to the Australian Shepherd Rescue and Placement Helpline. I’ve found a really cool foster mom here! She’s taught me all sorts of awesome tricks! I love to play fetch and can catch the ball. My foster mom say’s I’m a diamond in the rough, but I just think I’m a diamond. I’m spayed, up to date on my shots and on heartworm prevention. I can’t wait for the right forever home to come along! Please visit the Australian Shepherd Rescue and Placement Helpline website at to find the adoption form to fill out, or call 1-877-277-4779 for more information.

CAROLINA BASSET HOUND RESCUE I’m Alvin and I’m handsome enough to have been a show dog! I am an all-around agreeable guy and like people and dogs of all ages. I love food and walks and love to have my face and ears rubbed. I am a very smart boy as I learned to get out of the dog door in 2 seconds! Now if I can just learn to get back in. I am housetrained and know better than to chew on things around the house. I would love to have a new home soon so ask about adopting me! To make me a member of your family, call 919-708-4247 or visit our website at

Adoption Celebration

46 October 2011

J-E-T-S!!! Hey there! My name is Jet and I’m one of the newest group of dogs to enter the Pawsitive Partners Prison Program through Monty’s Home. All five of us carry the name of our favorite NFL team. More important than my name is the fact that I was rescued from the Pender County shelter and am now being trained for nine weeks in the Pender County Prison by special inmates so that I will have good manners and know basic obedience commands. I am a 1-year-old, female Chocolate Lab mix. If you adopt me, I even have my own crate, food, and microchip. The cool bandanna in the photo comes with me too! If you’d like to know more about me, just call 910-297-1338 or email Better yet, fill out an adoption application at and we’ll call you! *See my photo? I’m trying to say “Sanchez”, ‘cause he’s my buddy that’s taking us to the Superbowl...pick a winner, pick me to be part of your team! I’m sponsored by my Jets fan buddy: Barb Raab

My name is Missy. I’m a wonderful 4year-old Red Tri Australian Shepherd. I was returned to rescue after living with my first adopted Dad through no fault of my own. My foster mom always tells me I’m just a wonderful girl. She takes me on long walks in the morning, and I have plenty of friends in my foster home. I like the other dogs and enjoy playing in the backyard with them. I’m house-trained and don’t mind staying in a crate, but I don’t really need to. I sleep on my dog bed at night. I’m spayed, up to date on vaccinations, and have been on heartworm prevention and flea medication. Please visit the Australian Shepherd Rescue and Placement Helpline website at to find the adoption form to fill out, or call 1-877-277-4779 for more information. I am sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting Insurance Agency in loving memory of Dingo.
