I hope your New Year’s Resolution includes adopting me! My name is Sterling (CM1815) and I’m a darling, gentle fellow who just wants to be loved. I have short legs and a long body - they think I may be part Corgi. Of course, I’m a handsome blonde, so there might be some Golden Retriever in me, too! I am a perfect size at 35 pounds - not too big and not too small. I was found as a stray, but I act as though I was someone’s beloved companion at one time. I am kind and friendly to all I meet, I take treats gently from your fingers, and I walk well on a leash. I was neutered when found and I appear to be house-trained. When I arrived at Pender County Animal Shelter, I was very dirty from my time outside. The nice ladies gave me a bath and a brushing and I was so tolerant and appreciative of their efforts. I am particularly fond of older ladies. Volunteers at a recent adoption event noticed that I would make a beeline toward them. But believe me, I’ll be happy to share the life of anyone who will love and take care of me, whether they are young or old. Speaking of age, no one is quite sure how old I am, but I guess you could put me in the “older gentleman” category. Would you be the one to snuggle with me in my twilight years? It just doesn’t seem right that I’m alone at a shelter at this point in my life. I’m a wonderful boy and deserve so much more. If you’d like to adopt me, please call Pender County Animal Shelter at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196. And before I go, I’d like to thank Dick Parrott for taking my winter portrait. I hope to spend all the seasons of 2010 (and beyond) with my beloved new family.

Would you play with me? I’m Paul, an adorable kitten looking for a loving home. I am a sweet, affectionate boy who loves to be with humans. I find that humans also enjoy being with me - they tend to smile a lot when they watch me skip around the room, chasing toys and feathers. And then, when I’m tired from playing, I’ll lay happily in your arms! At just 19-weeks of age, I am neutered, up to date on shots and litterbox-trained. I also get along well with other cats. If you’d like to take me home, please call my SOAR foster mom at 910-2787901. I’ve got purrs saved just for you!

Hello! My name is Walker and I’m a very sweet boy! At 3-years of age, I’m a Lab/Hound mix who is neutered, up to date on shots and on heartworm prevention. I love to play with other dogs, but would just as soon be hugged, kissed and brushed by a human. I LOVE stuffed toys and will take them in my doggie house and play with them on my own if there’s no one else around. I’d be a perfect companion for an active couple or individual who likes to run or walk every day. Don’t miss the chance to adopt me - I’m terrific! Call Paw’s Place at 910-845-PAWS and tell them you’re ready to meet me! I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you!

Now is this the biggest smile you’ve ever seen? My name is Petey and I’m a happy boy who likes to have fun. Unfortunately, life hasn’t been too fun lately because my owners were forced to downsize due to the economy and I was brought back to the shelter. I’m getting a bit depressed because I’m used to living in a home and getting exercise with my family. I was a great companion - the female dog I lived with was my buddy and I am house-trained, leash-trained, and good at agility. I love swimming in the summer and taking family road trips. Obviously, I adore people and am also neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I have so many wonderful years to give someone...won’t you please adopt me? Please call Paw’s Place at 910-845-PAWS and ask them how we can meet! I am sponsored in loving memory of Petey and Maggie Layton.

Grief, like the ocean, comes in waves only to recede and come yet again. But with it comes healing. Memories wash ashore and are bathed by the golden sun. May we grab hold of those memories and let them fill the emptiness.

I’d love to be part of a fun, affectionate family! My name is Jake and I get along great with children. We could play in the backyard and snuggle together at night. But hey, even if you don’t have kids we can also have fun together playing with balls, going for walks and again, snuggling! At just 40 pounds, I’m a petite boy who is fully grown at 4-years-old. In fact, I turn four this month! Can I spend my birthday with you? I’m housetrained, an excellent walker, people-friendly, dog-friendly and obedient. I can ‘sit’ and ‘lay down’ on command. They think I might be a Whippet mix and I’m already neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I’m a great family where is my family? If you’d like to meet me, please call Paw’s Place at 910-845-PAWS.

Hey there, I’m Piper! I’m an adorable Tortoiseshell girl with beautifully colored fur. I enjoy playing with feathers and toys and am just 2-years-old. They tell me I’m one of the most affectionate kitties at the shelter. I love to curl up next to you and be close. I’m a Lap Cat, and that’s the honest truth! I’m good with children, although I don’t really like to be carried around, so older kids would probably be best. I am already spayed, vaccinated and I have excellent litterbox manners. My personality is a calm and friendly one, so I’m sure I could make you very happy! Please call SOAR at 910-457-6340 and tell them you’d like to meet me. I’ll be so happy to see your face at my door!

Adopt-An-ANGEL Please call 910-392-0557 to adopt us! ◄My name is Beau and I’d like to say special thanks to Donna French and Bill Holland for sponsoring my adoption fee at Animal Control. I am a pretty Cocker Spaniel with such beautiful wispy fur! I was rescued by someone who housed me in a goat pen with the goats for several months before turning me over to the shelter. As a result, I smell a little like goats! The volunteers have to bathe me in Listerine to get rid of the smell which is getting better. Probably by the time you read this, I will smell minty fresh and be even house-trained some more. I am very sweet and well socialized. I get along well with other animals (especially goats) and even kids. I am slightly heartworm positive so if you could help with my vet bills, I would really appreciate it. That way, my adopters won't have to pay so much - they can just give me a home. Please mail tax-deductible donations to Adopt-An-ANGEL at P.O. Box 15095, Wilmington, NC 28408. Thanks!

Adopt-An-ANGEL would like to thank the Fur Ball Committee and all the volunteers for their tireless efforts who organized the 2009 Wilmington Fur Ball at the Riverside Hilton. We would like to also thank all of the fantastic animal lovers who came out just to help homeless animals. People danced, ate great food, bid on all of the auction items and had a great time. It was so nice to be a part of something so wonderful! Money raised will go towards our vet bills that range from $3000 to $5000 every month and toward our Annual Spay A Stray Campaign.

◄My name is Jasmine and I am a very loveable adult cat. I was turned in to Animal Control with another cat who was adopted almost immediately...but not me. I ran out of time. Our owner could no longer keep us because she lost her job. This is so heartbreaking for me! I am a really pretty, healthy girl who would be devoted to you if you gave me a chance. I am easygoing, laid back and get along with everyone and everything.

►My name is Jessie. Come see me at Petco each weekend at our adoption fairs! I am a FUN girl who doesn't realize she’s no longer a kitten. I like to play, play, play. I guess that's because I am still just a baby. I am really pretty - I look like I am gold! I am spayed and have my necessary shots. I am a great companion and I am littertrained, too! I had a litter of kittens several months ago and they have all been adopted. I wish I could get lucky like they did and get a home, too. ◄My name is Bear and unfortunately, I have been returned to Adopt-An-ANGEL. The shelter rescued me when I was a puppy, but when I grew up my owners gave me away. Those people got in touch with Adopt-AnANGEL who took me back. I am energetic and would do best with a fenced in yard to play in. I do well with most dogs and I ADORE kids! Kids are sooo much fun. I really wish I had one. I am very, very sweet and loveable. I am neutered, vaccinated and heartworm free. Please adopt me and give me another chance. ►My name is Alicia. I was turned in to Animal Control with my babies when they were around 3weeks old. We were all so sick that the doctors even thought I wouldn't make it. Animal Control turned us all over to Adopt-AnANGEL hoping that we could be saved. Fortunately, we all survived and only because of the several weeks of intensive care that our foster mom gave us. Thankfully, someone came forward and took both my babies. Now I am the only one left needing a home. I am independent and 100% pure cat! That means that I will love you only when I want to. However, I will still expect you to feed me and love me no matter what. How's that for a deal?

Aren't I the cutest thing ever? I spent Christmas without a forever home, so I am hoping that by Valentine's Day, my luck will have changed. I am showing off my new trick, 'sit,' so you can see just how eager I am to please. My name is Riley, and I am a 3year-old Miniature Schnauzer, who, after a life outside in a concrete pen, is FINALLY rehabilitated and ready for a home of my own. I am a tiny boy, just 15 pounds. I'm house-trained and love to sleep in the bed with you. I need a home with another dog to keep me busy, and one with a tall fence, because I am still working on my leash-training. I know some basic commands, and I know that I can make you very happy. I am neutered, up to date on all shots, heartworm negative, and microchipped. Visit to fill out an adoption application. If you need help with that, you can call 804-986-8927.

Hi there! I’m Mama Billie, a super-sweet Beagle looking for a nice home. On a cold and rainy night two months ago, a cruel person dropped me and my three newborn puppies off in a cardboard box with no lid. Sadly, one of my babies passed away, but I've been a great mother to my other babies, named Jack and Jill. Now they’ve grown up and been adopted, so I’m looking for my own furever home. I'm very affectionate and get along great with other dogs. I'm current on my vaccinations, spayed, house-trained and leash-trained. I’m also a perfect size, weighing in under 20 pounds. If this all sounds good to you, call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022 and tell them you’d like to meet me!

I am sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting Insurance Agency in honor of Dingo. Thank you!

I am sponsored by George and Brenda Harriss in loving memory of Miss Scarlett, a special friend.

Brunswick County Animal Services Please call 910-754-8204 to adopt us! ◄Thanks for stopping by my cat cage! It’s so nice to get attention and some soothing massages along my neck. I’m hoping it won’t be long before I’m with my new family. I’ll be purring all the time then! My name is Snick Jr. (18088) and I’m a 2-yearold female who was found in Leland as a stray. Friendly, affectionate cats like me shouldn’t be out in the world alone - we belong with you! Could I be your new best friend? ►They’ve named me Blue (18738) and if you ever meet me in person you’ll know why! See, I have one sky-blue eye and one brown. It gives me a very handsome appearance. I’m a 7month-old Husky mix who was brought to the shelter by my former owners. They couldn’t keep me anymore due to that thing called the ‘economy’. It must have made them sad because I’m such a friendly, loving boy. I hope the New Year will find me at home with you. Come visit me and see what a gem I am!

◄URGENT!! My time is running out! It’s hard to believe that a cat named Romeo (17425) can be overlooked, especially when he totally lives up to his name. By the way, I’m talking about myself - that’s me, Romeo, in the photo. They had a hard time getting a picture of me because all I wanted to do was be rubbed and cuddled, and I kept flipping over so they could stroke my belly. I’m such a sweet boy, with a gentle disposition - why have I been at the shelter for such a long time? I’m just 2-years-old and want to live with a family for many more. Would someone please adopt me? ►I’m Dallas (18260), a family dog in search of a family! Just look at my smiling face and you’ll get an idea of the kind of personality I have: friendly, loveable and engaging. Please take me into the playroom so that you can get to know me. You’ll fall in love, I’m sure of it! I’m a 5-year-old male Malamute mix who loves to be hugged and kissed. I also have a thing for squeaky toys. I’m the kind of companion people dream of, so hurry!!

◄I’m a small girl named Scarlett (18674) and I just want someone to love me! I used to have a family, but they couldn’t keep me anymore. They want you to know that I was great with their kids (ages 10 and up) and that I’m almost 100% house-trained! I’m just 8months-old and have so many happy years to give someone. I love to play with toys and I’m crazy about snuggling. I’ll nestle my head against you so we can be close. Adopt me!

429 Greenswamp Road Supply, NC 28462

◄Wouldn’t you love to wake up to my face in the New Year? It’s an adorable face, or so I’m told! My name is Molly (14763) and I’m a friendly, affectionate girl. Would you adopt me? I don’t need much and give so much love in return! Just provide me with food, water, shelter...a few toys would be nice...and I’ll give you a lifetime of beautiful memories. Good deal, huh? I’m 8-months-old and ready to go! January 2010 11

URGENT, URGENT! I’m Running Out of Time!!

URGENT, URGENT Time Is Running Out For Me!!

I’m an affectionate Schnauzer mix named Max (CM1744) and I just can’t figure out why I haven’t been adopted! I once was part of a loving home, but due to financial difficulties my owners could no longer keep me. I’m as cute as can be, but I’m sad about being homeless. I’m just 4-years-old and have always lived inside with my family. I am neutered, house-trained, leash-trained, and child-friendly. I can be crated if you need to go to work for the day, and I’d be happiest in a home that is cat-free. I enjoyed getting my photo taken because I got some delicious treats in exchange for sitting on command! I had to spend Christmas here, but I hope the New Year will be different. Would you come adopt me? Just call Pender County Animal Shelter at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196 and they’ll give you driving directions or any other info you need. Thanks for reading and I hope to be meeting you soon!

My Christmas was a lonely one - it was spent at Animal Control. In fact, I’ve spent a lot of time here since my former owner dropped me off due to financial troubles. You might remember me from last month’s issue. I was on page 33 and my name is Old Girl (CF1355). I’m also known at the shelter as Angel. Technically, I’m not that old - maybe around 6 to 7-years. There are a lot of dogs I know older than that! You’ll find that we mature dogs have a lot to offer a family. We don’t have that puppy craziness and are happy to settle in and snuggle close. I’d be so grateful if someone would do that with me! I’m a true lover girl - I literally give hugs and will wrap my arms around you in the most affectionate way. The animal control officers have become very fond of me and they desperately want me to find a family. I’m a Boxer/Lab mix girl who still has wonderful memories to make with the special person who adopts me. Let’s start the New Year together! Call Pender County Animal Shelter at 910-2591349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196 and they’ll give you driving directions or any other info you need.

I am sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting Insurance Agency in loving memory of Mulligan.

I am sponsored by the UNCW Pre-Veterinary Medical Association. Thank you!

Cape Fear House Rabbit Society Please call 910-798-0103 or email to adopt us! ►Hi! My name is Barley. I’m a beautiful, dark gray, wannabe lop-eared rabbit looking for a new home. I would be lop-eared if my ears were a little longer, but they just sorta stick straight out like airplane wings. I’ve heard it said that it gives me an inquisitive look that people find quite cute. I’m a big bun, about 7 pounds, with a gentle spirit and a love of people and exploring. I am 5-years-old and I am really hoping to find that special home to give me lots of attention and room to run and play but most of all, a commitment to keep me forever. ◄Wow, what a bummer! Here I thought I had the perfect home – house in the suburbs, kids, dog, lots of love and attention. It was everything a bunny could want and then they said they’d become allergic to me and couldn’t keep me. After a taste of the good life, I know I can find the right family next time. They loved my sweet personality and how I entertained them with my dancing and my curious nature. I am a beautiful little 4 pound white rabbit with gray markings named Abby. I am about 2-years-old, spayed and littertrained. I sure would love that second chance. ►Can you see why my foster mom named me Princess? If you meet me you will want to take me home and treat me like a queen! I am as sweet and friendly as I look! I am a young, 5 pound, female rabbit who loves to explore and meet new people. I have lots of energy and would love to have an active household to be a part of.

◄Hi! I’m Jenny, the multi-colored Rex rabbit on the left and my friend is Eli. We are a couple of very loving bunnies looking for a new home since our mom had to go back to work and cannot care for us any more. We promise to be very neat, always use our litterbox and not make messes with our toys. We do recommend you do a little bunny-proofing of your electric cords when you let us out to play! We enjoy playing, petting, eating our salads and just laying next to each other quietly. Please consider us if you are looking for a bunny companion or two. ►Hey there! I’m Ollie, and as you can see, I am pretty content, laying next to a couple of my favorite toys: my cardboard box and my phone book. This indoor life is pretty darn good after my previous days outdoors. I don’t get excited about much, except food, which always has me jumping for joy. I get along with dogs, cats and people, and have been neutered and litterbox-trained. I am about 2-years-old, weigh about six pounds and am a beautiful cinnamon and white color. I know, I am shamelessly bragging in hopes that someone will take me home with them! Are you the one? ►Hi. I’m Blueberry, a white, lop-eared rabbit with dark blue eyes. I did not have a very good former life. When I was brought to a wildlife center near the Outer Banks, I was pretty emaciated. After a neuter and some good food, I am feeling really good about my situation. I really love attention and will beg for it when anyone walks by my pen. I also love to be out exploring the room and have just recently learned all sorts of neat tricks – like bunny binkies and jumping on chairs. I am a little shy at first but it’s just because no one ever was nice to me before. Give me a little time and patience and I will be your forever friend.

Love Connection

Where Is She Now? Clara, re-named Freya, Cover Model for June 2009 Seven months ago, Clara and her sister Cynthia biked across the June 2009 cover of PawPrints. Clara took control in the front while Cynthia rode along in back. Both girls were adopted after their appearance, and PawPrints was excited to hear from Clara’s family not long after her adoption. “If it wasn't for your magazine, I would never have known she was out there!” wrote new mom Pauline Autry. Today, Pauline tells us how she and her husband discovered Clara, and what life has been like for them since: “We picked up the June 2009 PawPrints at the grocery store. My husband, Brandon, knew I had been wanting a dog for a while, and as soon as we saw Clara on the cover we were instantly in love. We went to meet her at Petsmart since her rescue organization, Tails U Win, was having an adoption event there. We held her for a long time and watched how she interacted with the other dogs and people. She was exactly what we were looking for. She was so happy to see every person and dog. She didn’t shy away from anyone! I was a little nervous when we brought her home as I had never had a dog before. She was also only 10weeks-old, so there was a lot Clara, (pictured above two about puppies that I needed months after her adoption, to learn. She was great, and below during a recent though! She slept through ocean dip), has a new name the nights and was quickly to go along with her new house-trained. We also have life: Freya. two cats and they were not

very warm towards her initially. One of our cats, Raff, however, goes with us now when we take her for walks. We changed Clara’s name to Freya. In Norse mythology, it means the goddess of love and war. The name fits her well. We laugh because she is so full of love, but she often leaves our house looking like a war zone! One of the funniest stories I have about Freya is the first time we took her to the beach. She had never seen the ocean before and wasn’t sure what to make of the waves. She growled at them for a while and then tried to hop, or stomp, on them. Eventually, when she saw that we were in the ocean, she started to swim towards us, but I still think she prefers to be on the sand. There are so many things I love about Freya. My husband and I both work from home Two of Freya’s favorite things: so we are lucky that we playing with toys (top) and get to spend all day with camping on the beach (bottom). her. She is the friendliest dog I’ve ever met, she loves everyone she meets and wants to play with everyone she sees. She even drops her toys in front of the cats as if asking them to play. She is so much fun to have around and we love taking her everywhere we go. She is the best companion that we could have asked for!”

“We just love her,” says Pauline Autry, pictured with husband Brandon and Freya. “She is such a great part of our family.”

CAT: Cat Adoption Team Please call 910-792-9014 to adopt us!

We’re at Petsmart 7 days a week. ◄My name is Xena, and I’m a princess, but I’m not a warrior - I’m a lover! I have an extremely sweet nature and am very loving towards humans. Just pick me up in your arms and you’ll see! I’m also playful. When my photo was taken, I was having fun with one of my kitten pals. I’m a spayed female, litterbox-trained, who is healthy, happy, and ready to go home!

◄Hello up there! Wow, you’re tall. How about picking me up and taking me home? My name is Edgar and I was born in May of this year. I’m a neutered boy who is very sweet and playful. I love to cuddle with my humans, and I get along with cats, dogs and children. I would be a wonderful companion to a single-person or to a big family! Come meet me today, please? ►Hiiiii-ya! My name is Chuck Norris and, just like my namesake, I’m a good guy to the bone. There’s always a better solution than fighting how about purring, taking naps, and allowing yourself to be petted? That’s how I roll in life. I’m a 3-year-old neutered boy who gets along great with dogs and other cats. I’m quite social and I enjoy being with humans and receiving their affection. I really don’t want to stay in my cage at Petsmart much longer! Won’t you adopt me? Everyone needs a Chuck Norris in their life, don’t you think? Let’s start the New Year together! ◄I’m breathtaking! My name is Mambo and I’m a gorgeous cat with a luxurious coat of hair the mane around my neck makes me look like a regal lion. But don’t be fooled - I’m not ferocious, I’m as sweet as can be. I enjoy being held and have a gentle nature. I was once at Animal Control and was at first assumed to be a handsome boy. Well, they quickly found out I was a girl when I gave birth to kittens! My babies have all been adopted and now it’s my turn. I’m spayed, litterbox-trained, healthy and totally loveable!

Wilmington, NC

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Do you love cats? Then how about helping us? Adult volunteers are needed on weekdays and weekends. Please call Christie at 910-283-1762. ►I’m a declawed boy named Lucky Louie, but I won’t consider myself lucky until you take me home. You see, my life has been topsy-turvy lately. Someone put me in a carrier and then abandoned me. I’m glad I was found and now I’m being taken care of. I’m just 4-years-old and in good health. I’m very friendly and sweet and I have blue/grey fur with splashes of white. Would you keep me indoors safe with you? ◄OK, I may have just half a moustache but it’s not easy to shave with these paws, you know? My name is Pockets and I’m a neutered male who was born on May 18, 2009. Everyone is astounded that I haven’t yet been adopted. I get along great with cats, dogs and children and I love to cuddle with humans. I’m also vaccinated and superb in the litterbox. I sound like a perfect companion, right? So when can I go home? January 2010 15

Howdy! My name is Bernie and I would love to have you as my new bestest friend. I was surrendered by my family because they could not afford my care. You see, I tested positive for Parvo and was in need of treatment. I’ve received that treatment and now I’m ALL better. I’m just 4months-old and I’m already crate-trained and about 96% house-trained. I know where I’m suppose to use the bathroom - I just sometimes can’t hold it. After all, I’m still a puppy! I’m a good boy who listens well. I’m super friendly and I love everyone. I’m good with people, cats, dogs and kids. You can’t tell by this picture but my friends tell me that I’m funny, goofy and silly. I am good both off and on a leash and I would be happy in a home with or without a fenced yard. If you would like to adopt me, please call SOAR at 910-457-6340 and tell them you’re interested in loving me forever. I am sponsored by in honor of Ira and Arlene Kincaid. Thank you!

Cat Tails Please call 910-253-1375 to adopt us! ►Calicos are the most popular cat so why I am I still waiting for a home? My name is Shana, an 8month-old female, calico Tabby. I am one of the most unusual colored kitties you’ll ever see and I’m even prettier in person. I can be a little timid around other cats, but everyday I get better. Give me a chance and you won’t be disappointed.

▲Don’t let Santa bring you soot when he can bring you me, Sooty. I am a 10-month-old, gray Tabby male. I am quiet and petite but not shy. If you didn’t get anything but coal for Christmas, you can make up for it by adopting me. I would love to be your belated Christmas present. ►"TalkyTalky" that’s what they call me but my name is really Abel. I am a superb conversationalist, talking to anyone who will listen to me. I am a 7-month-old Tabby and white male kitty who is very affectionate. So if you need someone to listen to you when no one else will, please come and get me. ►Do I look disgusted in this picture? Well I am. My name is Nimbus and I am 3-yearold gray, Persian mix who is tired of living with all these other cats. Someone of my pedigree should be living by myself and treated like royalty. Come rescue me from these peons, and let me be your little king!

►Alright, listen up people, anyone who wants a bear hug from a cat come and adopt me! My name is Darcy and I’d love to be your leech, just stuck on your neck. I’ll hold onto you so tight, and if you can pry me off your neck, I’ll crawl into your lap. I am a 7-month-old gray and white kitty with the most symmetrical markings on my face.

▲If you loved Ferris Bueller, you’ll love me, Ferris. I am an unusual “buttery orange” male Tabby. My brother, Bueller, was adopted and I am so very lonely. I am a little shy at first but if you give me a few minutes, I will put some serious loving on you. So come adopt me, we’ll sit and watch TV, and eat popcorn. I’ll be the butter for your popcorn.

Howdy do! My name is Princess and I am a 2-year-old American Foxhound. I was rescued by a nice couple who fosters for Pender County Humane Society. I became good friends with their other foster doggie, but was recently moved to the shelter so that I could befriend a dog who had just arrived and was lonely. You see, I never meet a stranger - human or canine! Can’t you tell by my incredibly friendly face? Although I may be a ‘princess’, I sure don’t act like a spoiled diva. I’ve got a good heart and a kind soul and I love everyone. I'm also leash-trained, current on my vaccinations, on heartworm prevention, and spayed. If you're looking for a best furry friend, and maybe even a companion for your dog, I'm the one for you! To visit me, please call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022. I am sponsored in loving memory of Thomas Allen.

Hello! My name is Kiwi and I am a 15 pound Shih Tzu and Cocker Spaniel mix. I would like to thank Donna French and Bill Holland for sponsoring my Animal Control adoption fee and giving me this chance to find my forever home. I was turned in to Animal Control because my owner's 4 other dogs kept beating me up. However, I am GREAT with other dogs, kids and cats. If we had all been fixed, I may have kept my home. I am now spayed and vaccinated, but regrettably I’m heartworm positive. You can contribute to my vet bill by sending Adopt-AnANGEL a check to P.O .Box 15095, Wilmington, NC 28408. There will be no additional cost to my adopter. I am sweet, submissive, house-trained and absolutely a little doll! If you want to know more about me or want to adopt me, please call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557. I am sponsored by Ginger, who hopes that we will all find loving homes in the New Year!

New Hanover County Animal Control Services Please call 910-798-7500 to adopt us! ◄It’s been so long since I’ve had a family to love. My name is Bandit (A230687) and I’m an 8-month-old boy. I've patiently watched Thanksgiving and Christmas go by from here in my cage. I’m friendly, social, playful and curious. I enjoy playing with kitty toys and peacock feathers. Some nice folks found me as a stray and brought me here to the shelter. I would love a chance at life with you.

►Just like Bandit, I’ve watched the holidays go by from my cage. My name is Kareem Abdul Jabbark (A230208) and I’m a 4-yearold Beagle and Dalmatian mixed boy. I’m good on a leash and I don’t jump up on people. I’m very sweet and affectionate and show an understanding of certain words that prove I was once part of a family. I enjoy eating treats and feeling loved. Any chance you could help me out with those?

►Talk about lucky! I was found straying near College Road and Martin Luther King Parkway when a kind soul saved me and brought me here to the shelter. I waited for my family to come for me but they didn’t. My name is Ace (A231202) and I’m a true gem! I know how to sit on command, I take treats remarkably gently and I’m approximately 2-years-old. I’m a laid-back and chill kind of guy who likes to sit next to you or lay by your feet. I am very loyal and am looking for the same in a family. Is your family one that’s loyal? If so, I’ve prayed for a long time to find someone like you. ◄As you can see, I love tennis balls. My face lit up when I laid eyes on the one in my mouth. I’ve been here at the shelter almost as long as Ms. Callie and like her, I’m not having much luck finding love. My name is Laby Godiva (A229456) and I’m a 10-month -old Labrador Retriever mix. I was found running loose on Blue Clay Road and was brought here to the shelter for safety. I came in with another dog and we shared a cage with each other. Just the other day, he found a home! He found someone to love him! I am so happy for him but it sure was bittersweet to see him leave. With him gone, it gives me a lot of time to think about what I’m missing out on. I need to be part of your family.

180 Division Dr. Wilmington, NC 28401

◄October 2, 2009. That is precisely how long I have been looking for a home. I’m a 1-year-old Calico kitty named Ms. Callie (A228523). I was brought here to the shelter with hopes of finding a family but it hasn't been going so well. I’m a wonderful girl who’s silly, pretty, sweet, petite and cuddly - all wrapped up together. I’m a “roly poly” feline and will flip over on my back to show you my belly. I enjoy exploring and playing with peacock feathers. Could you be the guardian angel I’ve been looking for? ►I would like to be your little Buckaroo (A230265)! I am pure Lap Cat because that is where I love to be. When I came out of my cage to get my picture taken, I went straight for a lap and didn’t budge. With a little encouragement, I decide to explore and play and then I got a case of “kitty crazies.” I was running and hopping and goofing off and even bucked like a bronco! After a little of that, I was happy to snuggle right back up in the nearest lap. Don’t I sound like everything you could ever want in a feline companion? I will make you feel happy and very much loved...and I can’t imagine anyone not needing more of either of those in their life. January 2010 19

My name is Jasmine and I’m a very shy and sweet 2 to 3year-old Golden Retriever mix. After being placed in a foster home, it was discovered that I have some fear issues, most specifically of men. It is assumed that I have been abused by a man at some point in my life. I love to play with other dogs and, after time, have become very attached to my foster family. I love to go on my daily walks and to play with my "foster dog" brother. I am currently finishing up my heartworm treatment and then will be ready for a new home. My best forever home will need to be with someone who has experience with extremely shy and fearful dogs, and one that has the patience and time to give me to adjust to a new home. I’ve made amazing progress thus far and will be a wonderful addition to the right home. If you are interested in me, please contact the Cape Fear Golden Retriever Rescue at 910-791-5001 or email I am sponsored by in honor of Danny Ray Culler and Karen Reese.

New Hanover Humane Society Please call 910-763-6692 to adopt us! ◄I’m a gorgeous female kitten with the sweetest personality you ever did see. I also enjoy playing with toys, snuggling with humans and eating good food. My pleasures in life are simple and I’m sure you could provide them with no trouble. I was found as a stray and haven’t been named, but I bet you could think of a good one, yes? I’m just 7-months old and want to spend my life with you! ►Don’t worry, you’re not seeing double. We look identical except for our white bibs, don’t we? We Spot are 7-monthold kittens, a boy and a girl, who were found as strays by a very nice man. He kept us until the Humane Society could take us in. We are both spayed/neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. We are both very friendly and get along great with people, dogs and other cats. We haven’t yet been named so you can do the honors! You can also adopt us together or separately. ◄You know how some cats have blue eyes, but they’re pale in color? Not me! My eyes are a vivid blue, like the sky on a cloudless spring day. If you don’t believe me, just come on over to the shelter and see for yourself. Please! My name is Henry and I’m a 1-year old Siamese mix boy who is neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. I have a soft, cuddly body and I love to be rubbed. Just massage me between the shoulder blades and I’m in heaven. Hop in the car and come make me part of your family!

Open 10am-2pm Mon-Sat ◄Your search is over...adopt me and you’ll have the best cat ever! My name is Mr. Kitty and I’m a 2-year-old boy who was found as a stray. My foster mom wanted to keep me but couldn’t because of family allergies. She wants you to know that I’m a very loving and friendly boy who is a total Lap Cat. I just adore being held and kissed! At the shelter, I happily greet visitors, including children. I’m also friendly to dogs and am neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Adopt me!

Please call about our low cost spay/neuter program.

910-763-6692 ►Hello, friends! I’m a happy, friendly and playful boy. I’d tell you my name but I haven’t yet been given one. That honor will be given to the lucky person who adopts me! I was found as a stray and taken in by a kind gentleman until the shelter had space for me. I’m 7-months-old and I get along well with everyone: dogs, cats and, of course, people. Come meet me today! ◄If you long for a kitten to hold in your arms, I’d like to offer myself to you! My name is Jenny and I’m a 5-monthold girl with sleek and beautiful ebony-colored fur. My foster mom, who looked after me before coming to the shelter, says I am playful and full of adventure. I am already spayed, up to date on shots, and litterbox-trained - you won’t have to do a thing but love me. Come on over and let’s get started on our new life!

Hi, my name is Ms. Mina, which means "love, will, desire and protector". Why was I given such a name? In desperate hope of finding food and shelter for my beautiful baby, Tinkerbell, I was seen for days wandering the streets of Southport with her strolling behind. I had no home and being that my recently weaned baby was on the brink of complete starvation, I knew I had to find someone to help her! As Mother Nature had it...I finally did! My strong will paid off and finally some nice ladies took notice and nursed both me and my baby back to health. Tinkerbell found a wonderful home but now I need one, too! I am a healthy, sweet, quiet kitty who is spayed, tested (negative), vaccinated and approximately 1 to 2years-old at best. Some say I resemble a Torbie (Tabby/ Tortoiseshell). I have a gorgeous coat - a gray tabby with peach and cream around my legs and face. I love to curl up on your lap and will purr and rub my head against you. I like other cats and now that my baby is safe and sound, I would like to have a home where I can relax and play. Please give me a second chance by contacting Linda at 910-294-1589.

Boy, have I had a rough start in life! After suffering horrific neglect, I was so happy to have found my forever home last month. In a cruel twist of fate, I was stolen right out of my new family's back yard. After a long and scary 24 hours, I was found by my foster family. I am a full-breed, 8month-old American Staffordshire Terrier named Scooby. I've been neutered, had all my shots and adore playing with dogs, cats and children. My nickname is "butterball" and I am a "social dynamo". So, won't you finally give me the second chance everyone tells me I deserve? Please email or call 910-231-4275 for more information on me and how I can become your bestest friend. P.S. Don't let those missing patches of hair worry you, my hair is growing back in! I am sponsored by Francesca Slaughter in loving memory of Casper and Lucy. Thank you!

PAW’S Place Please call 910-845-PAWS to adopt us! ◄I might be nothin' but a hound dog, but I sure am proud! My name is Beau and I can do lots of good things: I walk nicely on a leash, am house-trained, I can sit for a cookie, and I get along well with other dogs. I am 4-years-old and have lived at Paw’s Place for 2½ of those years. Please give me a home where I can be cherished forever...I’m a very good boy and we’d have a happy life together!

▲My name is Luna and I’m a 1½-year-old Terrier mix girl. Folks tell me I’m awesome and that I have NO issues. I’ll play with anyone and don’t mind sharing rawhides with any other dog. In fact, I love dogs and I love people! I think everyone around me is there to either play with me or give me a hug. I hope 2010 will be the year that I am adopted. Please consider me! ◄My name is Todd and I’m a great dog! My date of birth is April 1, 2004 and I weigh 70 pounds. I’m full of love and I’m also full of fun for you and your kids or grandkids. I’m house-trained and I have good house manners. If you already have a dog, please bring him or her to Paw’s Place and let’s see if we can become friends. I’ve been at the shelter four years...when will someone take me home?

(Call for a pre-adoption application and adoption fee info.)

◄My name is Sugar Pie and I’m a 3-year-old Redbone/ Bloodhound mix girl. I have floppy ears as soft as butter and I also have the most kissable mouth. In fact, I’m kissin’ people all the time because I’m extremely friendly and affectionate. I enjoy playing and being with people. I love other dogs, too. I really want to be part of a family. Would you let me be your new baby girl? I’ve been at Paw’s Place for such a long time! ►My name is Wheelie and I’m a very happy, intelligent and loveable Hound boy who is friendly to every person and every dog I’ve ever met. I am 3-years-old, neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I’d love to be adopted by folks who will treat me like the wonderful fellow I am - I’d like to believe they will kiss me, hug me and show me what it feels like to be loved. Do you think you’re that person or family? If so, please hop in the car and come meet me. We can take a walk together and get better acquainted! ◄I’m Oakley, a sweet, smart and alert girl, but I can be very shy when first getting to know someone. I need a hero: someone with patience and time who will train me and let me know my "job" is to have fun and be part of the family. I’d love some positive reinforcement, gentle guidance, and TLC. I’m a house-trained Lab/Shepherd mix, and I’m good with other dogs. I respond well on a leash and would be a great exercise partner as I am very athletic. Please come to Paw’s Place and meet me!

Hi, my name is Aros! I am a handsome 5-year-old male Shepherd with exceptional markings. I know my obedience, I am not destructive in the house, I am also not a barker, so I am a very easy keeper - except for the moments that I get silly and try to sit on your lap. I have a sharp prey drive and see cats as prey so I cannot be around cats. My perfect home would have a family who would take me to parks and do things with me like running or biking, or even walks (I LOVE the car and the park). I do need a stable environment with people who understand how to be a leader and are comfortable having rules. I need a human that will take charge because I am a big healthy boy and can be pushy if I don’t have a confident pack leader. Please call 910-431-6294 or email for more information. You can also visit our website at

The Grinch came and saw me for Christmas! And I have been so good, too. All I wanted was a furever home, but here I sit. My name is Sabre, and while I may look black, looks are deceiving. I am actually a black Tabby. You see, I have indistinct "shadow" Tabby markings. If you look at a black leopard in a zoo, you might also see these shadow markings because the black leopard has a similar spot-suppressing gene! So I guess you can say I am a “mini black leopard.” I love sleeping in the bed with my foster mom, helping on the computer, and just napping on the couch. I am a girl, just 7-months-old, but I still love to play. I am small for my age and will always be small as I survived a childhood illness. Now that you have heard my sad story, please come adopt me! All you have to do is call Cat Tails Adoption Agency at 910-253-1375 or visit their website at

Hello! My name is Willie and I’m a gorgeous Black Lab. I was found in early November off River Road in Wilmington. Everyone thinks I must have belonged to someone as I’m in great shape, housetrained, and excellent at sitting on command. Still, my owners haven’t been found so now I’m looking for you to make me a member of your family. I’m a young adult boy who is very affectionate and doggie social. I recently visited Zeetlegoo’s pet store in Southport and was a perfect gentleman while they picked out a new collar for me. I’m already neutered and I love to be petted and rubbed. Do you think we could be a match made in heaven? If so, please call SOAR at 910-457-6340 and let’s get together! I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you!

Hi there! And Happy New Year! My name is Ralph and this is me on graduation day from the Pawsitive Partners Prison Program. Notice my nifty graduation cap? I am back in the program for a refresher course while waiting for the right someone to adopt me. I am full of energy and fun, and will be great for a very active family. I am a neutered, 1-year-old, male flat-coated Retriever mix. I love everybody, play well with other dogs and am working very hard on my obedience skills. Please come and meet me and I’m sure you’ll just fall in love with me and want to call me your own. I come with my own crate, heartworm prevention and a week’s supply of food, not to mention being up to date on all my shots and microchipped! My name is Rosemarie and I am a one-of-a-kind, very beautiful Snowshoe Siamese. I have gorgeous blue eyes, angel-soft brown and white hair, plus I have the cutest markings on my face! If you like Snowshoe Siamese cats, you'll adore me! The only thing is, I am shy and I need someone who is familiar with my breed who will work with me. You see, I was very badly abused over a year ago by a mean person and after that I became very withdrawn. Luckily I am being fostered by a nice lady who picks me up, pets and holds me. I will come out and play, and if you get to know me, you can win my trust. I am so playful and fun and I want to be loved! I am curious, sweet and I like other cats and even dogs! I'm healthy, spayed, tested negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia. I have had my vaccinations, I have been examined by my vet, and I feel great. I am fed a high quality food, and I currently live with other cats. I've been found snuggling and napping curled up with the cool dog who lives here. Don't you want to love me? I'd probably do best one on one with a loving person, or with just a few other animals. I do need a loving, understanding, indoor-only home, so I hope you contact Compassion in Action soon for an adoption application. You can call 910-264-5455 or email for more info. I am sponsored by in honor of Kevin and Jessica Maurer. Thank you!

I Need a Foster Home and Help for My Heartworms! Hello! This happy face belongs to me, Ming Ming! I’m a 1year-old female Boxer/American Bulldog mix who needs your compassion. The Sunburst Foundation is looking for a foster home where I can undergo heartworm treatment. You see, I have those icky heartworms and I sure would like to get rid of them. A foster home would be a great place for me to rest and recuperate as the treatment does its work. Donations are also desperately needed to pay for the treatment. Once I am healthy, I can find a permanent home. I am a sweet, house-trained girl and I get along just fine with other dogs and people. You can mail your tax deductible check to Sunburst Foundation, P.O. Box 7527, Wilmington, NC 28406. Please indicate that it is for Ming Ming's medical care. Thank you! If you’d like more information on becoming a foster home, or have any questions about my medical care, please email or call 910-622-0011. I am sponsored by the Karl Miller family. Thanks!

Do you have a kind, compassionate heart? I’ve heard there are people like you out there, but so far I’ve met the cold-hearted ones. Can you see the scar above my nose? It continues under my mouth, too. Someone apparently wired my mouth shut. The reason behind it is impossible to fathom. I’m a sweetheart who wants nothing more than to please my humans. Luckily, I got away from my abusers because I was found on a dirt road and am now enjoying all the positive attention I’m getting at Paw’s Place. My name is La Roux and I’m a miniature female Red Bone Hound. I want to stress the ‘miniature’ part because I weigh just 29 to 30 pounds and am fully grown at 1-year. Despite the cruelty in my past, I adore people, love to be rubbed, and am friendly and affectionate. I enjoy playing with toys and other dogs and would be delighted to have a cat-free home with a fenced-in yard. I’m already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention, so I’m ready to go! Call Paw’s Place at 910-845PAWS and tell them you’re coming for me. “Please help this deserving little girl,” says Elaine Haradon, who sponsors me in celebration of Riesling (Sadie) entering her life.

Won’t Someone Please Bring Me Home? My name is Jasper and I’ve been homeless for over four years. I just can’t understand why...I’m such a wonderful boy and have so much love to give a lucky person or family. I’m 6-years-old and I look like a mix between a miniature Husky and a Shiba Inu. I’m quite handsome! I love people and am very affectionate. I’m house-trained, crate-trained, and am sweet and friendly to dogs my size. I’d prefer a home without cats, small dogs or ferrets because they get me a little too excited. I’m very smart and I’ve been to obedience school so I’m quite familiar with commands such as ‘sit’. My favorite outdoor activity is playing ball - I love it! I also love going for car rides and meeting new people, but so far my forever family hasn’t come along. I’d be so grateful if you would please call the Sunburst Foundation and ask to meet me...the phone number is 910-6220011. Once we meet, I’m sure you’ll see what a wonderful addition I would be to your life!

My story begins with quite a ‘shock’! You see, when I was found by a Good Samaritan, I had been zapped by an electric fence. I was just trying to climb over, and got the jolt of my life! The kind person rushed me to the vet where I was treated and put back on the road to good health. Just take a look at my photo - I’ve suffered no ill effects and am a happy, friendly, affectionate, orange Tabby boy. In memory of my introduction to electricity, I’ve been named Sparky. I’m a 3 to 4-monthold kitten who hopes that sparks will fly when you and I meet! I’m cuddly and kissable and I get along well with the other kittens in the playroom. I am already neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Would you adopt me? To find out how you can, please call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022.

I am sponsored by Hank and Grace Harrington. Thanks!

I am sponsored by Cindy Meyers in loving memory of Harley and Murphy.

Pender County Animal Shelter Please call 910-259-1349 or 910-279-3196 and leave a message to adopt us! ◄Hi there! My name is Brutus (CM1700) and I was found as a stray with my buddy, Alex. He was pictured beside me in last month’s issue, but has been adopted. Now it’s my turn! I’m a terrific Lab mix who knows how to ‘sit’ and ‘beg’ on command. I really love treats, so if you’d like to test my knowledge of these commands, just show me a cookie! I walk well on a leash, possess a gentle demeanor, and would love to be your boy! Let’s go home. ►They say the third time is the charm, so if you somehow missed me on the cover, or forgot to read about me on page two, here is my third and final chance to get you hooked on me! My name is Sterling (CM1815) and I’ve been spending all my days and nights here at Animal Control’s animal shelter. I loved getting I’M THE HANDSOME away for a few hours for my photo shoot. COVER BOY! Won’t you adopt me and take me home for good? Read about me on page 2! ◄Anyone looking for a Boxer puppy? I might be mixed a bit with Shepherd, but I have that kissable Boxer mouth, that’s for sure! Just moments before this photo was taken, I was sitting alone in my kennel. It’s a big place for a little girl like me. My former owners called my Yanny (CF1865), but you can give me a new name if you want...just adopt me first! I was so happy to come out of the kennel for my photo. They held me, kissed me and cuddled me. Now it’s your turn - come visit!

◄You don’t have to go all the way to Russia to adopt a Russian Blue - all you have to do is drive to the shelter and pick me! My name is Maksim (FM1756), which in Russian means “the greatest”. I’m a tiny boy, just 6 to 8-weeks-old, who was abandoned in Pender County with my three siblings. I have two sisters and one brother and we all share a cage here together. I am the only one with blue/grey fur. The others are a Tabby, a Tortoiseshell and a black/white kitten. We are purry, adorable darlings who need a good start to the New Year! ►You’ve just got to come to the shelter and give me a cuddle! The first thing anyone notices is how soft my fur is. It’s long and beautiful, just like me! My name is Buckwheat (FM1787) and I’m a tiny boy, just 2 to 3-months-old. I arrived at the shelter as a stray with my kitten siblings. They’ve all been adopted and I’m so lonely! I hope someone reading this has made the decision to share their life with a new kitten and start the New Year off right! I know I could make you very happy as I’m a sweet and gentle boy. Hop in the car and let’s get together!

THANK YOU! Pender County Animal Shelter and Friends of the Pender Shelter are pleased to announce our “Home for the Holidays” campaign resulted in 24 dog and cat adoptions, $286 in donations and several pounds of dog food, cat food and cat litter. We would like to thank everyone for their support. It was a fun and successful day for all! January 2010 33

Awesome Family Dog Alert! My name is Holden (A018474) and I was born to be someone’s cherished companion. So why am I alone at Animal Control? Would you turn things around for me? I was found as a stray, but someone obviously once loved me and taught me many good things. I know how to sit on command and will shake your hand with my paw, too! In my photo I’m demonstrating my sitting technique. I walk well on a leash and am friendly to everyone I meet. I appear to be an Australian Shepherd mix and am just 3-years-old. I’m a medium-sized boy but I think I’m a lap dog. I sure do love to cuddle, even with people I’ve just met! I enjoy playing with toys, so I hope you’ll take me in the playroom when you come visit. We can toss a ball or two, then settle down for some hugs. You’ll find I’m a super-sweet fellow with a loving heart. Please let this New Year be the beginning of our life together! Call Brunswick County Animal Control at 910-754-8204 and tell them you’re headed over. I am sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting Insurance Agency in honor of Molly.

I’m a Beagle boy named Alvin! Don’t I have the cutest face? You should come see the rest of me - I’m cute all over! I weigh just 27 pounds and I think that’s a great size - not too big and not too small. At just 1-year of age, I can’t believe that I’m homeless. I spent the Christmas holidays at the shelter, so I hope the New Year finds me with a new family. I’m a very friendly boy who is neutered, up to date on shots, and on heartworm prevention. I like other dogs and I really love people, children included! I also ride well in the car, so I hope to take a car ride with you soon. I’d love to be driven to your house. If you’d like to meet me, please call the New Hanover Humane Society at 910-763-6692 and tell them you’re interested in Alvin! I am sponsored by Levi Donovan. Please consider adoption.

Pender County Humane Society Please call 910-259-7022 to adopt us! ◄I don’t know who put this pink sweater on name is Bud and I’m a boy! My blue sweater must be in the wash. I'm an adorable 5-year-old male Chihuahua looking for a new home. My previous owners could no longer care for me and I eventually found my way to the shelter. You’ll be happy to know I’m house-trained, neutered, current on my vaccinations and weigh only 6 pounds! So if you are looking for a new best 'bud', look no further than me! ►The shelter manager says I’m the “friendliest kitten she’s ever seen!” And that’s a direct quote. She says I just adore being with humans and will hang out wherever you may be. My name is Smokey and I’m a 16-week-old female kitten with the grey beauty of a Russian Blue. I am already spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. I enjoy playing with all kinds of cat toys and I also have a good time with the other kittens here. We’re one big happy family, but I’d rather become a member of your family. How about adding me to the crew in your household? ►Arfs from Amelia! I'm a flat-coated Retriever mix looking for a furever family. I’m very playful and friendly and I get along well with other dogs. When this photo was taken, I had just been spayed, so you won’t have to worry about doing that for me! I’m also up to date on all my shots and am leashtrained. Please come visit me at the shelter!

◄Hello! The nice people at Pender County Humane Society named me Gorgeous because that's what everyone says I am! I’m a longhaired, ebony girl with a mane of fur around my neck that frames my beautiful face! At 2-years of age, I'm a super-affectionate girl who is spayed, current on my vaccinations and litterbox-trained. If you're looking for a new kitty to beautify your home and warm your heart, just choose me! ►My name is Bambi and I'm a female Hound dog looking for a great home. A very nice lady rescued me from the streets where I was starving to death. Now I'm here at the shelter and enjoying all the good food. I'm current on my vaccinations, spayed and leashtrained. I'm extremely affectionate with every person I meet. You’ll be able to find that out for yourself if you visit me! ►Buenos días, amigos and amigas, my name is Pedro! Looking for a friend to cuddle and kiss? This muchacho says, “Si, si, pick me!” I’m a 3-year-old male Chihuahua who was found by the shelter at Animal Control. I am already neutered and vaccinated and I love meeting new people. You can pick me up and cradle me in your arms. Wouldn’t you like to start the New Year with a new buddy? Say “Si”! January 2010 35

My name is Melody and this is my kitten, Puddles. He was named that because he liked to play in the water dish, but I think he outgrew that. I'm about 2-years-old and was dropped off at Animal Control with several other cats because our owner was moving. My foster mom keeps telling me what a great cat I am. I'm very quiet, I like to play with toys and I'm used to having lots of other cats around. I'm all black and I have extra toes. They tell me some people call cats like me Hemingway cats. I'm up to date on my shots and spayed. My kitten is small for his age, but he's got a LOT of energy. He plays all day long. He’s cute too, he's got long black hair and blue eyes. If you can give either of us a home, please call 910-271-3101.

Hello, my name is Truffles. I'm sitting in front of my food dish in this picture because eating is my favorite activity! I'm a fluffy, longhaired, gray and white girl. I was rescued as a stray and now I'm up to date on all my shots and spayed. I love to follow my foster mom around and rub up against her legs. I'm being fostered at her work place, and I like spending my day watching all the activity, but I get kind of lonely when everyone goes home. I'm hoping for a home of my own...hey, maybe you could help with that! Call 910-271-3101 for more information about me.

SOAR (Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue) Please call 910-457-6340 to adopt us! ◄I’m a loveable, pure black kitten named The Black Prince. I’m so friendly and quite a character! I was born around April 1, 2009 and am neutered, up to date on shots and a perfect user of the litterbox. I get along great with big dogs, older cats, and other kittens. I also love to sleep in bed at night with my humans. To adopt me, please call my SOAR foster mom at 910-2784437. See you soon! ►I was fed from a bottle when I was just 2-weeksold, so that makes me extra sweet and loving to humans! My name is Cereta and I was born around June 30, 2009. I am extremely affectionate and playful and I get along great with other animals in my foster home: a big dog, big cats, and several other foster kittens! I’m an adorable little girl who is spayed, up to date on kitten shots and litterbox-trained. If you adopt me, I’ll even come wearing this snazzy tuxedo! Please call my SOAR foster mom at 910-278-4437. ◄Looking for a darling kitten? How about me? My name is Mary and I’m as darling as they come! At just 19-weeksold, I’ve got a lifetime of wonderful memories to give you. I am already spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. I get along well with other kittens and I love to play with toy balls. I’m also a good eater and a good cuddler. If you’d like to learn even more, please call my SOAR foster mom at 910-278-7901.

◄I’m Billy Jack and I’m a sweet-hearted Hound mix who’s been through some tough times. I wandered up onto SOAR’s property in sad shape - I was barely more than bones and quite scared. Thanks to good food and loving hands, I’m a new boy - in fact, they say I’m an overgrown puppy! It’s believed that I’m about 1½-years old, and I’ve discovered that I love running around the yard and playing with any kind of toy. I love to be loved on and am great with children, other dogs and even cats. I’m also neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. Would you come out to SOAR and meet me? ►I’m Fancy a friendly, affectionate girl who was found in the woods as a pregnant stray. Since I’m not wild at all and am comfortable with humans, it’s believed that my owners kicked me out when they discovered I was going to have kittens. I’m a young girl at just 2-years of age. I am spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. If you want to share your life with a great cat, come to SOAR and select me! ◄My name is Louie and I’m a young, friendly boy. I’ve been at SOAR a long time, so I hope you’ll consider adopting me! I would be an affectionate, entertaining companion for some lucky person or family. Here are a few of my favorite playthings: empty paper towel rolls, toy mice, jingly balls and peacock feathers. Oh yes, I also have a scratching post and I love to use it. I am neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained, too. I’m a sweetheart - please visit the shelter and take me home!

My name is Quincy and I’m a beautiful, very happy, sweet, 1-year-old Hound and Beagle mix. I am spayed, healthy, vaccinated and on monthly heartworm and flea preventative. I’m also cratetrained, housetrained, and good with other dogs. I’m a wonderful girl who needs an active home where I will get a lot of walks, play, exercise and one-on-one time with a nice person. My new home should have a properly fenced yard for me to play in and allow me to be an indoor dog. I was adopted but was recently returned. I slept on the kids' beds (as they wanted me to do), never messed in the house, never chewed anything up and was as sweet as could be! Then why am I without a home? Because I am shy and need someone to work with me to build up my confidence. If you are wiling to foster me and take me to dog school classes, the rescue will pay for them! If you are interested in adopting or fostering me, please contact Compassion in Action at 910-264-5455 or via email at

Hello Schnauzer lovers...It is YOUR man...SPARKY! I had a great summer and now that it’s winter I have really been enjoying running and playing in the back yard. I love to chase a tennis ball but I have to admit I don’t always bring it back to you...and let me tell you, my foster mom bought me a squeaky tennis ball the other day. Boy, that’s fun! I love to run around the house and growl at it! I would like to give you a few facts about me, so here goes: I love other dogs, especially dogs bigger than me. They make me feel more confident. I like to sleep in the bed with you at night and snuggle, but I will sleep in my crate if you ask. I am great on a leash and love to go on walks around the neighborhood. Car rides and treats are two of my most favorite to tennis balls, of course! I know how to sit but I can learn more if you want to take the time to teach me! I am crate-trained, but I stay loose in the house with my Boxer buddy, Toby, sleeping on the couch while my foster mom is at work. If I sound like I would make a nice addition to your household, visit You can find out more about me there. If you need an application mailed or faxed to you, please call 910-264-8300.

Sunburst Foundation of Wilmington Please call 910-622-0011 or email to adopt us! ◄I’m Rosie! I’m a mediumsized Pug/Spitz mix and, at just 3-years-old, I’m a smart, friendly girl who would be a great agility dog. I adore children and am friendly to adult humans as well! I am doing fine in getting along with other dogs and have been working with an obedience trainer. I would love to continue obedience training with my new family. I recently completed heartworm treatment, so now my heart is healthy and I’m ready to settle down in my new home. You’ll be delighted to share your life with me!

Meet & Greet Adoptable Canines! The Sunburst Foundation’s next Meet & Greet will be held Saturday, January 9, from 11am to 3pm at Pets + in Porters Neck next to Harris Teeter in the Oak Landing Shopping Center. ◄Could you Help With

My Medical Care? I’m Lola and I’m a sweet and loving girl. I’m a 2 to 3-year-old Shepherd mix and all I want is to please and be loved. Unfortunately, I was found to have a torn cruciate ligament. At this point, it is not able to be repaired surgically, and I will need to stay on supplements for the rest of my life. I also require special exercise with a pool. Any donations, no matter how big or small, would be greatly appreciated. They’re tax-deductible, too! Please make your checks payable to the Sunburst Foundation and send to Sunburst Foundation, P.O. Box 7527, Wilmington, NC 28406. In the memo line, please indicate that your contribution is for “Lola” Thank you so much for wanting to help me! I’m doing beautifully in my foster home and hope to soon find a forever family.

◄Hi there, I’m Julian! I’m a Whippet/Yellow Lab mix girl and I’m extremely sweet. At just 6-months of age, I am learning basic obedience skills, cratetraining and leash-training. I’d really enjoy continuing my obedience training with my new family! Presently, I weigh around 30 pounds and am vaccinated, spayed, and on heartworm prevention. I’m in a foster home with three large dogs and we get along very well. If you’d like to make me a part of your loving family, give me a call today! ◄I sure do love my foster mom, but I’m hoping the New Year means a new family for me! My name is Harley and I’m a male Whippet/ Hound mix. I’m about 1-year-old and weigh 35 pounds, so I won’t get any bigger. Playing with my foster brother and sister has been super fun, so I wouldn’t mind if I wasn’t the only dog. I am house-trained, cratetrained and know what it means when you say ‘sit,’ ‘down,’ and ‘leave it.’ Oh, and I also love to snuggle. I’ll curl right up with you and just lie there while you scratch my belly. Please adopt me! ◄My name is Dawson and I love people, especially children! I’m a 3year-old, flat-coated Retriever mix and I’d dearly love to belong to your family. I am housetrained, crate-trained, neutered, vaccinated, and on heartworm prevention. I play well with other dogs and I’ve had no problem with cats. I can also sit on command for treats. In fact, I might be able to do that too well, because I’m a bit overweight and need to lose some pounds. I’d be a great jogging partner!

P.O. Box 7527, Wilmington, NC 28406 January 2010 41

Hi there! My name is Bacall (CF1782) and I’m a Lab/ Shepherd mix. I was picked up by the side of the road...I was lost! The animal control officers wish I could talk and tell them what happened and why I was there. I am such a sweetheart, so everyone thinks I must have been part of a family at some point. At just 1-year of age, I’m a little girl who walks well on a leash and I really enjoy treats. In fact, just check out my photo and you can see me sitting on command, waiting for that dog cookie to land in my mouth. I have a calm, friendly and affectionate demeanor and I get along with my doggie neighbors. (By that I mean the dogs in the kennels to the left and right of me.) Would you please come take me home? Call Pender County Animal Shelter at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196 so we can get to know one another! I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you!

Shelter News & Events Golden Retriever Foster Parents Are Desperately Needed! Would you consider being a foster home so that a Golden Retriever in need, such as those waiting at Animal Control, might have a place to go while Cape Fear Golden Retriever Rescue (CFGRR) works on placing them in a permanent home? Currently, the number of Golden Retrievers that CFGRR can help is severely limited by the scarcity of foster homes available. As a foster parent you have the opportunity to help multiple dogs over a period of time. As CFGRR brings Goldens into its rescue program, you can provide a place for them to stay and be loved until they are healthy and ready to be adopted. Fostering is not always easy, but it can be very rewarding. Cape Fear Golden Retriever Rescue would be happy to answer any questions you may have about the fostering process. Call 910-791-5001 or email Julie Robey, Foster Coordinator, at

New Year Volunteer Drive! Have a little spare time to give to a worthwhile cause? Monty’s Home needs you! There are several different programs to choose from. You can work with the Pawsitive Partners Prison Program, a canine rescue and training program in which homeless shelter dogs receive obedience training through the prison system. There is also a new program called Pet Ed 101. Get in on the ground floor of this education program for school children. You could also lend a sympathetic ear to someone who is dealing with illness or loss of a beloved pet in the Rainbow Bridge Journey program. Or perhaps helping at fundraising events is more what you’d like to do? Monty’s Home Pet Expo is coming up on February 21st. Lots of extra hands are needed for that. To find out more, join others from Monty’s Home at a meeting on Tuesday, January 5th at 6pm at J Michaels Philly Deli across from the mall on Oleander Drive. You can also call 910-2597911, email or visit the website at and sign up for their newsletter!

My name is Delores and I am one energetic, fun girl! I love to play and I am absolutely starving for attention and affection. I am spayed and heartworm free which is great news! I am also cratetrained. I do well with some dogs but not others. I also have a strong prey drive so a home without cats is a must. I am approximately 1-year-old and am still full of puppiness. I was turned over to Adopt-An-ANGEL by a vet's office and I am not sure how I got there in the first place. It would be great if someone adopted me who had experience with my breed. If you want to know more about me or want to adopt me, please call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557. I am sponsored by the Miss Avis Davis Fund. Thank you!

Tails U Win Please call 910-250-3004 or email to adopt us! ◄Hi, my name is Chloe and I’m a 14 pound, purebred Beagle. Man, I wish you could see my eyes in person! They're the loveliest light caramel, so deep and soulful. My mom was allergic to me, so she had to ask the ladies at Tails to help me find a new home. I'm being fostered with all kinds of other doggies, pups, cats and kitties - and I love playing with them all. I'm only about 13-months-old so I've got a lifetime of love to give to my new family. My foster mom thinks it’s so cute when I do that straight-legged prancy-walk that is so common to Beagles. When I do my prancy-walk and smile at you with my gorgeous caramel eyes, your heart will just totally melt! ►Hello there! My name is Sydney! I got my Australian name because my sister looks so much like a Koala bear! I'm a Shepherd mix boy, about 12-weeks-old. I love to play with my toys and I know my basic commands already! I'm all cratetrained and almost house-trained, too. My foster mom thinks I'll be about 65 to 70 pounds when I'm all grown up. With my coloring, I'm gonna be one hunk of doggie love! ►Take a look at my precious furry ears and you'll know where I got my name. I’m Koala and I’m a 12-week-old Shepherd mix girl. I just so dearly love to play with my brother and our toys and have a good ole puppy time. I'm all crate-trained and I'm almost house-trained, too! I'm learning my basic commands and learning how to walk nicely on a leash. I'll probably be about 60 pounds or so when I'm all grown up. Just the right size! ►My Tails U Win foster mom pulled me from the Animal Control so that I could get my medicines and such, and find myself a wonderful, new happy home! My name is Lacey and I am so stunningly gorgeous! Caramel eyes, those gorgeous fluff ears and my beautiful brown and black coloring! I'm a little girl, only about 40 pounds or so, and I'm approximately 1-year-old so I'm not going to get any bigger. I'm all crate-trained now and I'm almost all the way house-trained. Kitty-Cats don't bother me a bit!

Oak Island, NC 28465

◄My name is Splash and my brindle coloring and black 'mask' make me look so stunning! I was rescued along with my puppies. I've nursed them and made sure they had a good start in life, and now it's time for me to find a forever home. I'm leash-trained and crate-trained! I do tend to chase kitty cats, but I don't want to hurt them - I just think it's fun to chase the little buggers! I tend to want to be the dominant female, so a home with a male, nondominant doggie or a home where I could be the only doggie would be best for me. ►I was dumped at the Animal Control where a nice lady saw me and brought me to Tails U Win. One look at my face and you can understand why! My name is Rosie and I'm a Black and Tan Coonhound mix girl. I’m a little bit shy but I warm up to folks pretty quickly. I'm only about 30 to 35 pounds and about 12-months-old. I’d love nothing more than to sit at home with you and get me some good old ear and belly rubs. ►My name is Tracks and I’m a black Lab boy who just absolutely and totally loves to chase after any and all balls and toys!! That's me! My foster mom said she named me Tracks because when I ran up to her in her yard, I was “making Tracks." I'm about 5 to 6-months-old now, but I'm only about 35 to 40 pounds. I have all the traits of the Lab; energy, playfulness and love-me-to-pieces-rub-my-ears! ◄Howdy, my name is Donner. See that gorgeous lady named Splash pictured at the top of this page? That's my Mommy! I guess my Dad must be a Lab because except for my ears, I could be a Yellow Lab boy. I'm about 14 to 16-weeks-old, with gorgeous blonde fur and deep, dark eyes. I will need a family who knows and loves Labs, because I'm an energetic, playful, happy kind of guy who wants to run and have a good ole time. I'm probably going to be about 70 pounds or so when I'm all grown up. If you love the Yellow Labs, call so we can meet and greet! January 2010 45

The Purrfect Adoption Please call 910-329-4700 to adopt us! ◄My name is Scrabble and I’m a 1-year-old orange and white beauty! Chuzzle, pictured beside me, is my handsome baby boy. We were dropped off in a cardboard box by an empty building. Why would someone do that? Luckily, we were saved. I like to be held and I enjoy being with people. I’m already spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained, so I hope you’ll take me home with you! ►Do you dream of being with Edward from ‘Twilight’? Well, I’m the feline version and I’m even more handsome! I don’t bite necks or sparkle in the sun, but I am happy to be held and kissed. Oh, I’m not more than a hundred-years-old, either. I’m just 7-months! Boy, we have lots of memories to make. I’m ready to belong to you, so please come get me. ◄I’m a 1-year-old girl named Bingo and I’d love to be part of your family! I was found in a box with my friend Scrabble (pictured at top) and her kitten. I’m a very sweet and friendly lady who gets along well with other felines. I am already spayed, up to date on shots, and litterbox-trained. I’m a quiet kitty who just wants a nice, comfortable life after the troubles I’ve seen. Brittany ►I was found in a car engine with my two brothers. They quickly found I’m all alone! All I can do is wait for you to walk through the door. You won’t keep me waiting, will you? My name is Sage and I’m 24-weeks-old. I’m a little girl who is spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. I love to be held and am extremely precious. I’m also friendly, playful and a lot of fun.

◄I’m a female orange Tabby named Chuzzle! I’ve been hanging out here with my brother, Mahjong, but he was recently adopted. I want to start the New Year with a family, too! I’m just 18-weeks-old and will have you smiling nonstop with my purry playfulness and loving personality. And here’s even more great news: I will come to you already spayed, vaccinated and litterboxtrained. There won’t be a thing for you to do except enjoy me! So how about it - won’t you come meet me? I’m ready to start 2010 as your best friend!

Jon and Kate

Alexis and Leah ▲There might be turmoil and trouble in the real “Jon and Kate” household, but not among us! We get along great and can be adopted together or separately. We five babies were found in a box at just 2 weeks of age. Our foster mom had to feed us with a baby bottle. That means we’re quite used to being touched, kissed and cuddled. Today, at 17-weeks of age, we’re ready to find homes! Jon is the boy, the rest of us are girls. Come pick out the one who steals your heart!

We are sponsored in honor of all cats and kittens who have found loving homes with forever families. 13775 Ocean Hwy 50, Suite 503 Surf City, NC 28445 January 2010 47

"Woo-hoo! There are NO Fleas on me!" FleaMaxx breaks the flea life cycle in your carpeting for ONE full year, Guaranteed! HULA enjoys a flea-free home environment.

More than 20 years

Hi, I'm Phizz - I look just like a Lemon Dalmatian! I’m a wonderful girl and my mommy loves me very much. She loves me so much that she wants me to have a full and happy life and she can’t provide that with our little house and yard. I need a lot of space to run. Mommy says that when I jump the short fence, the neighbors threaten to call Animal Control! Mommy wants me to be a house dog, but I also enjoy playing and exploring outside. I wouldn’t hurt a flea. I’m full of love and I never growl at anything or anyone. You’ll be happy to know that I’m already spayed, vaccinated and house-trained! I am 1year-old, 65 pounds and can sit, shake and snuggle. All my vet records will be available to my adopter. If you’d like to meet me, please email my mom at or call 910-547-7744. Thanks, and I hope to be meeting you soon!

I hope the journey I’ve been on ends with you! My name is Addie B and I’m a Walker Hound who was found as a stray on Highway 211. I was little more than a bag of bones, covered in fleas, ticks and sores. My friends at SOAR got me to the vet immediately and now I’m flea and tick free, my sores are healed, and I’ve put on a good amount of weight. In fact, I’ve discovered that Chicken McNuggets are a nice little treat to have now and then! I’m a 1-year-old girl with a sweet and friendly disposition. I get along well with everybody: men, women, children, dogs and cats. I am spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. Everyone was delighted to find that I was heartworm free! If you’d like to give me a very Happy New Year, please call SOAR at 910-457-6340 and tell them you’re interested in meeting Addie B. I’ll be waiting! I am sponsored by Ruby and Netop. Thank you!

Various Local Rescues We are all from different Animal Rescues. Please read our stories! COMPASSION IN ACTION My name is Georgia, and I'm a very good girl. I was found in the middle of a very busy road. I was about to be run over when I was scooped up and rescued! My foster mom named me Georgia O'Keefe because she thinks I'm as beautiful as one of that artist’s amazing paintings. I am brown and white with the sweetest white eyelashes you've ever seen. You will melt when you meet me. I'm approximately 3-years-old, spayed, vaccinated, heartworm negative, microchipped and bursting with love. I weigh around 45 pounds and am a "medium" sized dog. They say I'm some sort of Beagle/Bulldog/Mutt mix. I'm very smart, house-trained, crate-trained and I love going for long walks. I also really love to snuggle in bed. I love belly rubs and hugs, too. I'm as sweet as pie and enjoy giving kisses. I like other dogs but need a home without cats. Please adopt me and love me forever! For more information about me or to inquire about the adoption process, please contact Compassion in Action at 910-264-5455 or by email at for an application. Thank you very much!

FUREVER FRIENDS Hi, I’m Big Bertha. I’m a spayed and vaccinated girl and my tests came back negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia. I am good with other cats and I will tolerate stinky canines. My owner walked in to a local veterinarian’s office and was toting me in a carrier. She sat my carrier down on the floor next to the front desk, turned and walked out the door. I was abandoned with a note that said “could no longer take care of.” In spite of it all, I am still a cuddle bug and I thoroughly enjoy cuddling. I’m laid back and calm and weigh in at a whopping 16.8 pounds! All the more of me to love, right? If you are ready for a serious relationship and don’t have commitment issues, please call Furever Friends at 910-383-2100 (Monday through Friday between 8am-6pm).

NORMAN P. WIGGLE HOME FOR WAYWARD DOGS Want to fall in love? Come meet me! My name is Freddie. My plain black appearance may not stand out among the crowd but my personality most certainly does! I am a stand out because of my always sweet, always calm demeanor. I am about 5-years-old, neutered, house-trained, up to date on my vaccinations and current on heartworm prevention. I absolutely love people and I am great with small children, other dogs, and cats. I even know how to sit on command! If you have questions or would like to meet me, please email or call 910-617-2818.

CAPE FEAR RESCUE RANGERS Hi, my name is April and I’m a female, Flame Point Siamese who was surrendered when my owners moved away. A kind soul took me in and I am now looking for a new home. I am a sweet but shy little girl who is fun to have around. I am litterbox-trained and very well behaved in the house. I love to be petted and I’m spayed and ready for a new home. I am hoping to get a home of my very own for the New Year. Could you grant me that wish? If so, please contact Cape Fear Rescue Rangers at 910-259-3502 or visit for more info.

A SHELTER FRIEND OF SE NORTH CAROLINA Because of her fantastic personality, A Shelter Friend selected Pretty Penny for the North Carolina New Leash on Life Program at the Bladen County Correctional facility. In this program, inmates spend several hours each day over the course of 2months training Penny in obedience and good canine manners. Penny is an exceptionally sweet and lovely Lab/Shepherd girl, and would make the perfect addition to any family. Penny has already been spayed and is up to date on vaccinations, so when she graduates from the program she will be ready to move into your home and heart! Various Local Rescues We are all from different Animal Rescues. Please read our stories! OPERATION TOPCAT

Hi, I'm Gus. I'm very friendly until you put me in a cage to wait for someone to come along and fall in love with me. It scared me and I was stressed out. I do much better when I’m free to run and play. I love being petted and would probably even sit in your lap, if you would let me. I am almost 1-year-old. I wandered up to a local vet office and they took me in and got me all ready for adoption and asked the nice ladies at Topcat to help. I am handsome as can be so won't you please give me a chance? To adopt me, contact my foster mom at 661-319-5978 or by email at You may also visit NC250.html. I can meet you whenever you want.

Hello, my name is Bruno! I’m a 1-year-old American Staffordshire, brindle in color. I was wandering around Wilmington and it took a while for me to be rescued. I soon realized, however, that my rescuers wanted to help me and find me a family. I have not found a home yet, and I do so wish to be loved and kissed. You’ll find that I give lots of kisses back! I am a talker and have lots of energy. I love to run and play. I am ready to be adopted as I am in good health, up to date on all shots, and on heartworm prevention. Just look at my beautiful can you resist? To adopt me, please call P.E.A.R. (Pender Endangered Animal Rescue) at 910-675-0867. You can also email or visit the website at

PAWSITIVE PARTNERS PRISON PROGRAM Hi, my name is Ralph! I have graduated from the Pawsitive Partners Prison Program which is eight weeks spent learning all the things to help me be a good pet for your family. I have lots of energy and would love to jog with you, play on the beach or do whatever active sport you enjoy. I am enrolled in an agility class right now which is lots of fun and I am doing very well. I do need a home so I can continue to learn other skills like retrieving your slippers in the morning and cuddling by your couch at night...(not really, I already am a great cuddler!) If you would like me as your buddy, call 910-297-0290, email or visit

PET FRIENDS OF DUPLIN COUNTY My name is Louie and, as you can see, I'm a handsome Lab mix. I was a stray who was rescued just in the nick of time. I was told I would be picked up and taken to a Lab rescue group in Indiana, but my transport never worked out, so I guess I'll be a North Carolina dog after all. That's ok with me. I'm around 1½-yearsold, quiet, but energetic with a sweet personality. I take treats very gently, and I'm working on my other manners. I'm heartworm negative, up to date on my shots and neutered. I love to go for walks and explore and I would be a great companion for an active family. Please call 910-271-3101 if you can give me a second chance.

PLEASURE ISLAND PAWS My name is Pete. My owner had to go to an assisted living home in Florida and could not take me or my brother, Damon - a diabetic cat, with him. Luckily, my brother just found a new home with a lady who was so happy to find a cat like him. I know he has a great place to live. Now if only I could find a place. I am around 8-years-old and blind due to cataracts (which is fixable) and I’m partially deaf. I would love to find someone who will be willing to give me love and attention. I deserve no less. If you would like to know more about me or would like to consider opening your heart to me, please contact Pleasure Island Paws at 910-458-3000.

DOOK-N-DANCE FERRET SHELTER Hello. My name is Parker and I’m a very fat, very fluffy little boy who is estimated to be around 8 to 10months-old. I was abandoned in a park by my former owners. I’m a very sweet and friendly boy who is deaf. I’m very rambunctious and full of energy. The shelter would like to see me go to someone with at least some ferret experience because of my deafness. If you are interested in sponsoring my care or adopting me, please contact us via email at or call 910-5482831. You can also view other ferrets looking for homes by visiting

Breed Rescues We are all from different Breed Rescues. Please read our stories! SCHNAUZER RESCUE OF THE CAROLINAS Are you looking for your "Prince"? Well, that's me. I’m a 4-year-old, male mini-Schnauzer who is looking for his new royal family. I am looking for a calm home, as that is what I am used to, and a home without small children, as I have never been around them. I will treat my new castle wonderfully, as I am house-trained and very respectful when left alone for the day. I walk well on a leash and love to go for car rides. I am a friendly, neutered boy who is up to date on shots. I will be awaiting your call, dreaming of regaining my crown as the center of attention in a forever family. Please visit and click on ‘How to Adopt’ to fill out an application. If you need one emailed, mailed, or faxed to you, call 804-447-2057.

MID-ATLANTIC GREAT DANE RESCUE My name is Stewie and I’m a 3 to 4-year-old Dane mix with natural ears. I am a cuddle bug and would lay in your lap all the time if you’d let me. I’m good with big dogs but I’m not sure about some little dogs. I think it is their high pitch bark. I’m good with cats and kids, I know basic commands, I walk nicely on a leash and I’m house and cratetrained. I’m a quick learner and I like to sleep in the bed with the little boy in my foster home. I will do “the wave” when you feed me. I’ll stand on my hind legs and throw my front paws in the air (without jumping on you). I’m such a good boy except I do snore like an old man. To adopt me, please contact the NC Chapter Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League by calling Terri at 252-566-8934 or visiting their website at

My name is Sadie and I’m a funny girl with one floppy ear higher than the other one and jowls that hang low. I enjoy hanging out with the other doggies in my foster home. I’m about 1½-years-old and I’m a quick learner. House training has been easy for me. I am full of energy and I especially like to pounce on my toys in the yard. I’m searching for my forever home and since I’m a silly girl, I will give my new family lots of smiles, love, and happiness. To find out more about me, send an email to, call 910799-5638, or visit

Happy New Year! My name is Max and I'm a 10-year-old Golden Retriever. I am house-trained and very social with everyone, including kids. I'm at my highest level of happiness and bliss when I have a tennis ball with me. Don't think that just because I'm 10 that I'm not fun. I really have a lot of energy and as you can see, I don't have much gray on me at all! Haven't even used any Grecian Formula! If you are interested in adopting me, email the Cape Fear Golden Retriever Rescue at or call 910791-5001. You can also see more dogs in need of homes at I promise if you give me a chance we can both start out the year on a fabulous note!

My name is JoJo and I’m a 5-year-old Greyhound. I’m cat trainable and have the most adorable overbite. When I smile, all of my teeth show! I even have a really cute upturned nose. I’m a very sweet and affectionate girl and would love to find a forever home soon! If you would like to know more about me or would like to see other Greyhounds looking for homes, please visit or contact Barbara at 910-540-9644 for more information.

My name is Sasha and I’m about 3 to 4years-old. I am a very sweet and spunky girl who enjoys running, jumping, and playing around the yard. I’ve recently even figured out that “fetch” means I actually have to bring the ball back! I love to do exactly what is asked of me and would make a great candidate for agility courses or learning other types of tricks. I am quite a snuggler, but be warned – I snore sometimes, and would love to have your entire bed to myself. I don’t mind being around cats as long as they are nice to me, but I would be most comfortable in a home where I am the only dog. Please call 910-431-6294 or email for more info or visit

Adoption Celebration

We’ve All Been Adopted!

54 January 2010

Hi there! I’m a creamcolored beauty named Kayla. I was found wandering around Oak Island, as lost as can be. They tell me I’m about 1-yearold, but they haven’t been able to determine which breeds I’m mixed with. My mom and dad must have been spectacular, though, to have created a dog as wonderful as me! I’m good with men, women and children and I play well with other dogs. (I haven’t been around cats yet, so the jury is out on that one.) I love to play and am so happy when I can come out of my kennel for some game time. I have a docked tail and I’m already spayed and vaccinated. If you’d like to meet me in person, please call SOAR at 910-457-6340 and they’ll tell you how we can make a play date! I am sponsored by SOAR in loving memory of all their wonderful, furry friends who made it safely to the Rainbow Bridge.

I’m CoCo MoonPie and I’m a female Boxer mix who is 8-years-old. Six years ago, I was found wandering on Highway 17 by a kind lady who scooped me up and rescued me. I’ve been living at Paw’s Place ever since! Please, won’t someone take a chance on me and bring me home? I’m a truly wonderful girl. I enjoy chew toys and being around other dogs and people. I’m so very sweet - I love giving lots of delicious doggie kisses. If you have a 6-foot fenced in yard and a cat-free home, I hereby promise to be your loyal, loving, lifetime buddy. To find out more, or if you need driving directions, please call Paw’s Place at 910-845-PAWS. Let’s get to know one another, OK? I am sponsored by Christine Watkins of A Pet Nanny. Thank you!
